Petroleum development and biodiversity conservation in the protected areas of the Albertine Graben in Uganda : can they co-exist?

Owiunji, Isaiah January 2013 (has links)
The co-existence of oil and gas development and biodiversity conservation in protected areas is a worldwide challenge because of the risks posed by petroleum development in sensitive ecosystems. This research focuses on the relationship between petroleum development and biodiversity conservation in protected areas of the Ugandan Albertine Graben, to establish how these two sectors with different goals can co-exist without one sector significantly compromising the other. In 2006, Uganda confirmed the existence of commercially viable quantities of oil and gas in the Albertine Graben and, given Uganda's overwhelming energy needs and pressure for economic development, started to develop these resources. However, the area is also identified as a region of great importance for biodiversity conservation and is designated as a Biodiversity Hotspot, Ecoregion and Endemic Bird Area. Petroleum development has started to show impacts on wildlife, tourism, agriculture, fisheries, culture and communities. The research drew on the Driver, Pressure, State, Impact and Response (DPSIR) concept to identify the impacts of petroleum development and the wider issues that impact on biodiversity management and affect the livelihoods of communities living in and around the exploration areas. Data sources included literature, document analysis, field observations, focus groups and interviews. During the study 41 interviews involving 52 people from central and local government, private sector, non-governmental organisations, consultant and member of parliament; one focus group each in eight of the villages in the exploration areas were undertaken. The study examined current strategies to address the emerging issues of petroleum development and identified their limitations. It highlights the roles of stakeholders in developing and influencing responses in the management of the petroleum development, and makes recommendations for addressing the weaknesses currently not covered by the legislation and environmental management practices. A number of recommendations are made to ensure co-existence, including implementation of legal and regulatory frameworks, development of efficient and effective institutions to enforce and monitor the laws and regulations, maintenance of ecological integrity of protected areas and sensitive ecosystems, improving the effectivenes of environmental management tools for decision making, creating an enabling environment for participation of all stakeholders in the process, and promoting good governance. In addition, the co-existence between petroleum development and biodiversity conservation can be realised if more resources are committed by Government, NGOs, private sector for the environment sector, that there is political will to champion biodiversity conservation, a transparent decision making process, and stringent operating practices. Finally, all key stakeholders need to play a role in the petroleum development process and biodiversity conservation.

PROSTITUTION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND NORWAY A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

WALDEJER, Tereza January 2013 (has links)
My thesis deals with the topic of prostitution. As a research strategy for my master thesis I have chosen qualitative research. For developing my paper I was using various research methods such as participant observation, unstructured interviews, case study and qualitative comparative analysis. My paper is based on empirical studies which I have obtained during my internship in the organization Albertine Prosjektet in Stavanger likewise on cooperation with the Czech NGO Rozkoš bez rizika in České Budějovice. My results appeared from unstructured interviews with social workers of both organizations as well as with women in prostitution, and subsequent interconnection with theoretical knowledge. My aim was to elaborate a comparative study of prostitution in the Czech Republic and Norway with predominant focus on the České Budějovice area and Stavanger area in order to present the current situation in prostitution markets. Feminist points of view play also an important role because prostitution can be explained as a gender-based phenomenon. This perspective is one of the key points of my paper.

The objective is to find and highlight the elements of melancholy in the literary language, in this case, using as analysis corpus the work The Fugitive by Marcel Proust. Productions in first person discourses, as in the case of the narrative studied in this research, emphasize the evaluation of the forms and the manners of manifestation of emotions in literature. The objective is to investigate the existence of a fictional discourse noticeably dominated by emotional elements, focusing on the statements and on the narrative sequences in order to reveal their own character in the manifestation of the melancholic narrator, in a language of melancholy, and in a melancholy aesthetics by Marcel Proust. Within the framework of the theory of literature, philosophy and anthropology, the focus is to build an necessary interface, in contemporaneity, to study this emotion in a work of literature.

Forests under threat? : changes in land use and forest cover in rural western Uganda

Twongyirwe, Ronald January 2015 (has links)
Deforestation and land use change are widespread in western Uganda. However, the spatial patterns and time-series of change and the reasons why it is occurring remain to be fully investigated. In this work a combination of satellite imagery and social surveys is used to quantify forest gains and loss over the last three decades in the region close to Lake Albert, whilst also providing an account of possible drivers of change. This area proves to be interesting as it covers regions with both formally protected areas (gazetted regions) and un-protected forest, the latter being largely under private ownership. Remote sensing data from the Landsat satellites were gathered for forest change detection, and were processed using standard remote sensing techniques, then quantified using GIS and regression methods. Fieldwork allowed these data to be ground truthed while gathering (quantitative) household surveys and (qualitative) key informant interviews. Quantitative surveys were analysed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis, and were compared qualitatively with the satellite analysis and stakeholder interviews. The results show that forest cover declined significantly outside gazetted areas at the expense of varying local?scale processes, although the protection of the gazetted forests was remarkably successful. In forest corridors outside gazetted regions, losses exceeded 90% (p<0.05). Survey data suggest that rural poor households were more likely to be situated in forested regions, and were more dependent on forest resources for their livelihoods. However, the drivers of change were spatially variable, with expansion of sugarcane farming being a likely driver in the northern areas, but small?scale agricultural expansion a significant factor in the more southern parts of the study region. While there is wide agreement within the data that the patterns of forest cover and land use changes are anthropogenically driven, more specific drivers are swamped by intricacies of the bio-physical and socio-economic preconditions that are inseparable in both space and time, although agricultural expansion and population growth were evident and pervasive. The analyses provide insights into complex anthropogenic processes at various spatial scales, and policy recommendations provided are widely applicable for developing countries struggling to conserve nature whilst boosting economic growth.

André, Julie 19 May 2009 (has links) (PDF)
