Batistela, Amanda. January 2016 (has links)

Liporaci, Vanessa Chiconeli. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This paper concentrates on the data collection and analysis of the different ways of acting of the divine providence in four short stories written by Guimarães Rosa: "Substância" and "Seqüência" belonging to Primeiras estórias of 1969, "A estória do Homem do Pinguelo" which can be found in the posthumous book Estas estórias of 1969 and "Arroio-das-antas" in Tutaméia of 1967. The choice of these short stories is due to the fact that they point, exemplarily, to the existence of a providential strength which is capable of changing the direction of the facts and of the lives of the characters involved in them. As a starting point, we take the idea that this providence moves the action in the selected compositions and we analyze the way in which the writer articulates all the elements of the narrative, conducing it to the moment of the providential action, in other words, to the apparently abrupt change that happens in the lives of the characters due to the influence of a superior ordering strength. Having a unique structure and poetic language, Guimarães Rosa codes the dissemination of the providential action in the interstices of the stories about: Sionésio and Maria Exita; the little red cow and Seo Rigério's son; Seo Cesarino and Pedro Mourão and Drizilda and the old ladies. Taking this into account, we work with the idea that these four narratives allegorize, in different ways, the same meaning that transcends the stories in question. / Mestre

Fiction narratives of historic character like Umberto Eco's novel O Nome da Rosa allow a wide possibility of studies. Among them the importance of irony in Umberto Eco's text construction is realized. Through this irony it is seen how this fiction has a reflection about the concept of mimesis, as the reiterated use of intertextuality, element this often used in contemporary fiction works. Irony, recourse permanently present in narratives construction allows a relation between what is expected from a historical text - the truth - and what is expected from a fictional text - the invention. It enables, therefore, a reflection and questioning point of historical truth. It is noticed, then, the capacity that historical narrative, especially O Nome da Rosa, presents to reevaluate the mimetic concept not as a copy from reality, neither as a negation space of literary text's referencial condition. It enables just reconsideration on Aristotelian concept. In narrative construction it is visible how elements, like the narrator, are essential to the creation of a mentality in the reader that the truth is being told every instant, besides many other elements that have an authentication in the fictional discourse as a reality expression. This constant truth-reality environment is ruined every moment by the action of irony that reveals to the reader is not another truth, but a possibility of constant questioning of a simple act of instituting a unilateral truth. A wide work in its plurisignificant capacity, O Nome da Rosa presents, moreover, a philosophical discussion involving the laughter prohibition in Middle Ages, demonstrating, therefore, how Fiction and History match as elements of human knowledge boundaries and how they deserve to be studied and deepened for a better...

Published in 1957 and joined to the Our Ancestors trilogy in 1965, The Baron in the Trees, by Italo Calvino, is a portrait of the changes in Europe during the 18th century, shown through the preposterous life of Cosimo, the baron that lived in the trees. Cosimo can be interpreted as a microcosm of the 18th century, and the tale of his adventures is a way to trace the intellectual journey of the West. The present work aims to discuss the relationship between history and fiction with the structural and discursive analysis of The Baron in the Trees, and to analyze the intellectual and moral coming of age of the main character, along with a genealogy of the novel, presented in Calvino's work. To that end, we will show the relationship between the novels The Baron in the Trees alludes to and the growth of the readership, the birth and the coming of age of the literary genre that is part of the origins of the bourgeois society: the novel. We will also discuss the impact of the Enlightenment on the thoughts and actions of the main character, since, in the person of Cosimo, we see a reader, an inventor, a philosopher and a storyteller. To study the relationship between fiction and history, we shall prioritize the metafictional reflexion that appears in the narrator's voice, in a discussion about the role of the historian and the author and the thin line that keeps them apart. We will also investigate Calvino's aesthetic and ideological position in his reflexions on the role of literature and of the scholars in the modern world.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The proposal of this paper is to investigate the relationship between literature and sociology, not in order to curbing the boundaries of knowledge between these areas. However, the study aims to contribute to an inclusive view and understanding of how sociology appropriates of the tools of literary theory, and build up a narrative very similar to fictional or novelistic genre. By bringing together these two forms of storytelling the sociological work is a way to build up concepts of circulating memory, communicate experiences and knowledge about the world itself. On the one hand, this dissertation seeks to overcome an idea dominant that features the literary discourse just as imaginative, creative, mythical whose main objective is only entertainment and aesthetic enjoyment. On the other hand, this work seeks to indicate that sociological narrative can be creative and elaborated, without losing his authority, competence or rigor as scientific knowledge. Furthermore, this study intends to demonstrate that the sociological narrative is one among many narratives, and to be analyzed as such does not take away the vitality of its social analysis. Nor the understood of sociology as one narrative prevents its strength for building up a reading from discursive frameworks of what is usually called fictional sociopolitical landscape. In order to demonstrate how these narratives are articulated, this dissertation analyzes three works: The Communist Manifesto, The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte and The Capital – Critique of Political Economy (Book 1, Volume 1). More precisely, from the discursive strategy that Karl Marx used to argue about the social and historical panorama that each book refers to and analyzes. To achieve his goal the author appropriates stylistic and fictional elements of literary myths.

________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation analyses the discursive construction of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s image in six political speeches delivered in international spheres in 2003, thus, at the beginning of his first mandate. It is grounded on a multidisciplinary discussion of the notion of ethos – the image of the speaker forged in discourse – initially based on Aristotelian rhetoric and on its rereading by the New Rhetoric and by Argumentative Semantics, expanding the concept into the discursive field. Inspired in theoretical and methodological contributions of the Critical Discourse Analysis, this study adopts the perspective of language in use and of discourse as interaction. It analyses the construction of the image of the self (speaker) around the elements that compose the scene of the enunciation of the international political speech. It presents a general description of the institutional context of each speech, of the political interests involved and of the argumentative strategies explored in each occasion. It analyses, then, the construction of the discursive image of the self on the basis of three parameters: 1) the presentation of the interlocutors in the texts; 2) the relation of the sentences to the political diplomatic discursive domain; and 3) the discursive construction of reality. The construction of the image of the self benefits from the affinity or the contrast with the audience, such as it is presented in the text; it resources to a repertoire of patterns offered by the discursive domain; and it is built according to the values associated to the objects of discourse formulated in the texts. The analysis shows the effort of building a coherent and unitary discourse, even though it reveals different discursive strategies, according to the audiences and the institutional contexts.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research aims at examining the construction of social identities of English speakers at the foreign language (FL) coursebook and it has, initially, the intention of revealing the conception the coursebook holds towards identity. The investigation focus on dialogs and illustrations by seeking to perceive which identities are built around issues of gender/sexuality, race/ethnicity and class. It is also envisioned the comprehension of how the identity construction process works, and, not least, to show the effects of the construction of the speakers’ identities over the foreign language learners’ ones. Former studies on English coursebooks reported that the conception of identity they bring is fixed, homogeneous and stereotyped (TÍLIO, 2006, 2012; GRIGOLETTO, 2003; SOUZA, 2002a, 2002b, CORACINI, 2011a, 2011e). Drawing on a post-structuralist view regarding social identities (BLOCK, 2007), in this study, they are conceived as social-historical constructions, and also discursive ones, which, due to that, are connected with power relations (SILVA, 2012). Thus, identities are, in nature, undone, fragmented and contradictory (MOITA LOPES, 2002; NORTON, 2011). In order to conduct this research, it was adopted the qualitative paradigm (CHIZOTTI, 2006) with methodological instruments from the Critical Discourse Analysis framework (RAMALHO e RESENDE, 2011; DIAS, 2011) what has allowed the researcher to print his interpretative view on the object analyzed. As a result, it was concluded that the coursebook analyzed reflects an essentialist conception concerning social identity. The various speakers’ identities were built so as to legitimize hegemonic identities by means of ideological-hegemonic operations, serving the purpose of sustaining relations of domination. The effects resulting from that over the English language learners’ identities are seen as few possibilities are given to learners for them to identity with subject positions on the coursebook and, in turn, defer the construction of identity projects (CASTELLS, 2010) that leads to emancipation. Faced with that, this research favors the critical discourse awareness (FAIRCLOUGH, 1192, 1999) as a pedagogical tool to minimize social inequalities as well as offer a glimpse of social change to the leaner-subjects. Key-words: Identity. FL coursebook. Critical discourse awareness. This research aims at examining the construction of social identities of English speakers at the foreign language (FL) coursebook and it has, initially, the intention of revealing the conception the coursebook holds towards identity. The investigation focus on dialogs and illustrations by seeking to perceive which identities are built around issues of gender/sexuality, race/ethnicity and class.
