The Use of Qualitative Content Analysis in Case Study Research

Kohlbacher, Florian 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
This paper aims at exploring and discussing the possibilities of applying qualitative content analysis as a (text) interpretation method in case study research. First, case study research as a research strategy within qualitative social research is briefly presented. Then, a basic introduction to (qualitative) content analysis as an interpretation method for qualitative interviews and other data material is given. Finally the use of qualitative content analysis for developing case studies is examined and evaluated. The author argues in favor of both case study research as a research strategy and qualitative content analysis as a method of examination of data material and seeks to encourage the integration of qualitative content analysis into the data analysis in case study research.

Ett nedslag i den svenska kriminalvården : Kronobergshäktet i ett institutionellt perspektiv / A view into the Swedish prison and probation service : the custody of Kronoberg in an institutional perspective

Wennberg, Mathias January 2006 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this study is to examine to what extent there is a discrepancy between the formal guiding documents and the employees experiences of the activity at Kronobergshäktet. Furthermore, is it possible that any discrepancy could be explained by institutional imbalance? My main theories are normative institutionalism and a modified type of institutional analysis. The model consists of three parts –values (a common value-system), rules and practice (the unpredictable reality) and it assumes a reciprocal relationship between them. In order to examine this I have used qualitative methods in form of interviews combined with an analysis of content. The normative institutionalism presupposes that the actors follow a logic of appropriateness in the interest of both the institution and the actor. According to the respondents, their performance is restrained by the influence from practice. I found that the respondents in their work can’t apply the common value-system in favour of the unpredictable practice. This means that the people detained do not receive the care they are entitled to in times of overcrowdment. Remarkable as it is, the respondents are well aware of what causes the problem; the overloaded custody and the influence from the unpredictable practice. The conclusion is that in times of overcrowded departments the custody is governed neither by rules or values but by practice.</p>

Trends In Female Labor Force Participation In Turkey In The Period 1988 - 2008: Structural Decomposition And Factor Content Analyses

Munzur, Alaz Safak 01 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Female labor force participation rate in Turkey has been consistently lower than the participation rate in many of the similar developing countries. In addition to country specific factors that prevent increased participation of women, the Turkish economy has been passing through a liberalization program since 1980s which also affects the structure of female labor force in many aspects. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the patterns in the position of women in the labor force during 1988 -2008 in Turkey. The period under concern can be identified as one under which the country has largely completed its transformation within the structural reform programs. A major question that is investigated in this thesis is whether the female labor force has been affected differently than men during the period under concern. Employing structural decomposition and the factor content analyses, impacts of changing production patterns and foreign trade on female labor force are examined. Hence, the present study constitutes a basis for studies that aim to develop policy implications for increased female labor force participation in Turkey.

Combining Social Network and Semantic Content Analysis to Improve Knowledge Translation in Online Communities of Practice

Stewart, Samuel Alan 11 December 2013 (has links)
Establishing online communities of practice is an important part of the knowledge translation process in the modern healthcare system, but these online communities are new entity that is inherently different from traditional communities of practice that are dependent on existing social structures. The objective of this thesis is to combine communication analysis and content analysis to delve deeper into the communications within an online community to try and determine how online communities exist, and how that information can be leveraged to improve online knowledge translation. Using a novel approach this project will map the contents of online conversations to a structured medical lexicon (MeSH), and then use the inherent relationships of that lexicon to calculate term, user and thread similarities within an online community. These similarities, combined with connection analysis results, will provide a much deeper understanding of how online communities function. The methods developed here will then be tested on two separate mailing lists, the Pediatric Pain Mailing List (PPML) and SURGINET, a mailing list of general surgeons.

Specialistsjuksköterskors upplevelser av omhändertagandet av traumatiserade barn

Andersson, Anna Stina, Sjöblom Strömgren, Bodil January 2010 (has links)
The most common reason for children to be seek in-hospital care in Sweden is trauma and every year more than 200000 children is traumatized. Nurses meet these children in their work but the procedures used to care for traumatized adults are not transferable to children. The aim of this study was to illuminate how special educated nurses experience the caring for traumatized children. A qualitative design with one-to-one interviews (n=9) was used to collect data. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The analysis ended up in four categories; the experience of lacking knowledge, the experience of difficulties in the care, the experience of the need of good nursing skills and the experience of differences in the routines in use. The findings show that all the interviewed nurses experience a need to increase their knowledge concerning the care for traumatized children. Increased skills and knowledge in this matter would raise their feelings of being secure in their professional role.

Investigando o desenvolvimento de práticas reflexivas de professores em um curso de formação continuada em astronomia voltado à observação do céu /

Oliveira, Fabiana Andrade de. January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: There are some difficulties associated with the teaching of astronomy in schools, the lack of contact of teachers with this Science during initial formation and the need to train individuals aware of the night sky, led to the the need for a continuing education course with emphasis on watching the sky. This research involves the study of a continuing astronomy training course in relation to the reflective professionals development of teachers. In this sense, we seek to answer the main question: What signs of the development of reflexive practices emerge during a course of continuing formation in astronomy? In fact, the movements carried out in favor of a dialogue between theory and practice were based on collaborative work between teachers and researcher, and the reflexive process was sustained under three aspects: a practical situation of these teachers, reflections in collective and presentation of Academic research on astronomy teaching. The data were constituted from a questionnaire and focus groups conducted in two meetings with the teachers. By supporting methodologically in Content Analysis, the results point to indications of the course's contribution to the development of reflective practices. Thus, we conclude that the conditions of collective reflection have proved to be effective in allowing real teaching situations to the discussed and studied among peers, thus enabling the involvement of teachers in decisions related to the course. Some of them believe that the theorires do not meet their trainning needs, since they are far from the problems they experience in practice. On the other hand, other teachers understand that there are limiting factors regarding the conditions of study and professional improvements. In the view of some teachers, the practical activities developed during the meetings were relevant, since they consist of strategies and methodologies that... Phosphorous Dynamics of Lake Eola Sediments

Marshall, Frank E. 01 January 1980 (has links)
Lake Eola is an eutrophic, land-locked lake located in downtown Orlando, Florida. It has a surface area of approximately 27 acres (11 .0 Ha) and a maximum water depth of 22 feet (6.7 meters) near the center. Sediment samples were collected from the lake bottom at various water depths and analyzed for physical characteristics and phosphorus content. Lake water samples were collected and analyzed for selected parameters as related to sediment phosphorus dynamics. Phosphorus release from agitated, aerobic sediment samples was measured in laboratory batch experiments. Phosphorus release from anaerobic hypolimnetic sediments was measured by utilizing~ situ isolation chambers. Results indicate that phosphorus release from anaerobic Lake Eola sediments can be described by the Freundlich isotherm, indicating that release may be a desorption process. Phosphorus budget calculations indicate that the phosphorus that accumulates in the hypolimnion of Lake Eola has the potential for increasing productivity when overturn occurs.

Om superpedagoger och vanliga lärare : en analys av hur media konstruerar läraryrket

Johansson, Jessica January 2011 (has links)
School and education are topics that are frequent in Swedish media. The intention of this essay has therefore been to investigate the image of teachers and their profession in Swedish daily press. The overall aim has been to analyze how teachers are portrayed in the debate that followed the TV-show Klass 9A, and by that find how the debate defines the concept of a good teacher. The representation that was found was then compared to earlier studies. The series was shown on Swedish television between January and March 2011.26 articles were chosen and the ambition was to have various perspectives represented, such as different voices and also papers from different areas of the country. To define categories in the debate and to find patterns in how the writers discuss the tv-programme, the teachers and the Swedish school system, the method qualitative analysis of content was chosen. As a theoretical framework the dissertation Kunskapens fanbärare has been useful to see if there have been any changes in the constructions of good teachers in the discourse since the 1990's.The investigation shows that the Swedish school still is presented as a school in a deep crisis, and to change this, three factors needs to improve: the teachers need to be more engaging, the teachers education needs to be of higher quality, and the conditions for working teachers has to improve. The conclusions also maintain that there has been a displacement of how the concept of the good teacher is described in daily press, from a more subject orientated teacher, almost an expert, to a more pedagogical teacher who is interested in creating good relations with the students. The most frequent terms that are used in the empirical material to describe the good teacher are foremost enthusiasm and inspiration..
