This doctoral dissertation investigates the status of the topic constructions in the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The objective is offer a discussion about the topic‟s role in that language similar to what has been built around oral languages, as in Brazilian Portuguese (PB) (cf., dentre outros, GALVES, 2001; NEGRÃO, 1990; NEGRÃO & VIOTTI, 2000; ORSINI, 2003; PONTES, 1987; VASCO, 1999, 2006). The objective is also to contribute to the further characterization of these structures and eventually proposing a formal representation for them, considering the approaches to the left periphery (cf. RIZZI, 1997, 1999) and the cost of computing (cf. CORRÊA & AUGUSTO, 2007, 2012). The hypothesis is that Libras is a sentence – oriented language, whose basic structure is "subject > predicate," the "topic > comment", on the other hand, corresponds to the marked structure (cf., among others, FERREIRA BRITO, 1995; QUADROS & KARNOPP, 2004). Therefore, it is possible to assume that this marked structure is different and has a more costly psychological reality than the one representing the canonical ordering in that language, i.e., "subject> predicate". Being so, this difference can be investigated in psycholinguistic experiments. Thus, another aim is to develop the experimental methodology implementation for the Libras‟ phenomenon investigation. Then, the following types of experiment have been adapted/created: (i) acceptability judgment task; (ii) language production induced; (iii) tracking of eye movements. The results of these experiments confirm the hypothesis that Libras is a sentence – oriented language, that is, its basic order is "subject> predicate." However, once the most likely condition for a constituent to be taken as a topic is tested, since the discursive demand highlights an internal argument as a candidate, this feature is assumed to be a significant strategy for the representation of discursive information on Libras‟s sentence, competing equally with the subject. Such strategy has been very little used when this appropriate discursive context is absent, i.e., without a highlighted topic candidate for an internal argument. Furthermore, it was observed that the nonmanual topic marker, raised eyebrows, does not appear to be indispensable for Libras users to produce and understand sentences like "topic> comment", as well as the kind of verb – agreement verbs or plain verbs – does not seem to offer restriction for the topicalization in Libras. Thus, the analyses of the experiments also show that the topic in that language may be less marked, a kind of ongoing change in the language.

Musiques mineures. The Mevlud Ritual among Pomak Women of Western Thrace

Droutsa, Eftychia 13 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation studies the singing of women among the Pomak Muslim minority of Greece during the private ritual of mevlud. Linked to the birth of the Prophet, this ritual is based on the 15h c. poem of Süleyman Çelebi. Characterised by series of oppositions - chief among them being the everlasting question of the boundaries between profane and sacred world –, the poem is constantly brought to the edge of religiosity. The analysis reveals that Pomak women engage with this para-liturgical space through the adaptation of the ritual of mevlud to their own image. Hence, the ritual space becomes a front stage for conciliating values between ways of thinking, being and doing. It thus associates the mevlud with issues of feminity, learning collective action, memory, emotion, sharing, and transmission. All these ties are established through the musicalized voice, which goes beyond the question of meaning, text and language, by transforming the recitation of the poem into singing. This flexibility brought by Pomak women inscribes the melvud in a para-liturgical context where boundaries between sacred and profane, tradition and innovation, knowledge and ignorance, speaking and singing, appear constantly negotiated.

Does Fiscal Consolidation Really Get You Down? Evidence from Suicide Mortality

Antonakakis, Nikolaos, Collins, Alan 09 1900 (has links) (PDF)
While linkages between some macroeconomic phenomena (e.g. unemployment, GDP growth) and suicide rates in some countries have been explored, only one study, hitherto, has established a causal relationship between fiscal consolidation and suicide, albeit in a single country. This study examines the impact of budget consolidation on suicide mortality across all Eurozone peripheral economies, while controlling for various economic and sociodemographic differences. The impact of fiscal adjustments is found to be gender, age and time specific. In particular, fiscal consolidation has short-, medium- and long-run suicide increasing effects on the male population between 65 and 89 years of age. A one percentage point reduction in government spending is associated with an 1.39%, 2.35% and 2.64% increase in the short-, medium- and long-run, respectively, of male suicides rates between 65 and 89 years of age in the Eurozone periphery. These results are highly robust to alternative measures of fiscal consolidation. Unemployment benefits and substantial employment protection legislation seem to mitigate some of the negative effects of fiscal consolidation on suicide mortality. Plausible explanations for these impacts are provided and policy implications drawn. (authors' abstract) / Series: Department of Economics Working Paper Series

Role měkkých faktorů v rozvoji vnitřní periferie východních Čech / The role of soft factors in the development of the inner periphery of the Eastern Bohemia

Komárek, Marek January 2017 (has links)
The role of soft factors in the development of the inner periphery of the Eastern Bohemia Abstract In recent years, research on conditionality process of space polarization and regional development puts emphasis on understanding importance of endogenous and "soft" factors. General theories of regional development (formed mainly on the basis of evaluating "hard" data) are verified by frequent case studies because of their limited explanatory power. In these case studies, especially qualitative approaches of evaluation are applied. Influence and validity of "soft" factors significantly increases with decreasing hierarchical level, so it is desirable to conduct empirical research at the municipal level. Diploma thesis aims to analyze "soft" factors of regional development and understand the nature of differences in socio-economic development at the municipal level in the inner periphery of Bohemia. The concept of the institutional thickness has become the theoretical basis. This concept has logical overlap to the concept of the social capital. The objects of research are the spatial co-operation of actors of regional development (mayors), their reciprocal trust and engagement in local activities. Thesis aims to identify and to explain the nature of relations, direction of interactions and impact of political...

The redefined centre, periphery and margin : the long-term interaction sphere of southern China 3000-221 BC

Chen, Yi January 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates southern China as a part of dynamic and extensive interregional networks from the third to the first millennium BC and explores the changing roles of different southern regions within the interregional relationships. This was an important transitional period for southern China as it was the time when several prominent and farreaching innovations of technologies and material culture were made or adopted in the area. Four key sets of materials – rice, bronze, ceramics and jade – are examined with a World-system perspective to reveal interregional contacts in different directions and of different nature between southern China and a number of neighbouring regions. By stressing on local responses towards different technologies and material culture in different period, an alternative narrative to that stemmed from Chinese historiography is, therefore, suggested. Instead of being a passive and 'backward' periphery in the traditional sense, southern China presents diversification of material culture over time. Many of the mechanisms of transmission and circulation in the south are characterised by 'leaked' technologies and designs, as well as 'selective adoption' and local redevelopment of material culture.

Characterisation of Nuclear Envelope-Associated Proteins (NEAPs) in Arabidopsis thaliana / Caractérisation des protéines associées à l'enveloppe nucléaire (NEAPs) chez Arabidopsis thaliana

Détourné, Gwénaëlle 29 May 2019 (has links)
During evolution, eukaryotic cells have acquired a nuclear envelope (NE) enclosingand protecting the genome, which is organized in chromatin, a structure wrapping DNAaround histone proteins. The NE is composed of two membranes: on the nucleoplasmic side, the Inner Nuclear Membrane (INM) and on the cytoplasmic side, the Outer NuclearMembrane. The NE allows communication between both compartments through Nuclear PoreComplexes and bridges the cytoskeleton to the nucleoskeleton through the LInker ofNucleoskeleton to Cytoskeleton complex. Thus, the nucleoskeleton associated with the INMis needed to transmit signals to the nucleus and induce changes in chromatin organisation andultimately gene expression.A novel family of NUCLEAR ENVELOPE ASSOCIATED PROTEINS (NEAPs)proposed to be new components of the plant nucleoskeleton has been recently evidenced inthe model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. AtNEAP proteins are encoded by a small gene familycomposed of three genes and are targeted through a nuclear localisation signal to the nucleuswhere they are anchored at the INM through their C-terminal transmembrane domain.AtNEAPs also possess several long coiled-coil domains reminiscent of the lamin structure inanimals. This thesis aimed at performing a functional analysis of AtNEAPs using T-DNAinsertion and CRISPR/Cas9 mutant lines. The AtNEAP interactome was investigated bymolecular approaches (Yeast Two Hybrid), which indicated AtNEAP interactions with eachother to form homo or hetero-dimers; as well as in vivo localisation and co-localisationcoupled to image analyses (apFRET, acceptor photobleaching Fluorescence ResonanceEnergy Transfer), which confirmed interactions with the transcription factor (TF) AtbZIP18.AtNEAP specific antibodies generated during this study were used to confirm expression invivo. Altogether, results indicated that AtNEAPs are part of the nucleoskeleton, with a role inanchoring TFs at the INM to maintain nuclear morphology and chromatin organisation.

This master thesis deals with the topic of the natural place and the place which is changed by people's activity. It deals with topic of genius loci, problems of loss of the place and our relationship to place where we live. In more detail it is focused on the city and its peripherals. It offers a short wiew to the history of cities and their periphery, architecture and urban planning. The thesis also deals with fine arts associated with the urban environment - artists, for which the city was and is an inspiration and a theme and with the role of art in public spaces. Research part of the thesis is aimed at children's perception of the place where we live. Through qualitative research methods I am trying to find out what is the meaning of the word "home" for todays children, how they percieve their close surroundings and what is the development of their thinking. The didact part of the thesis offers collection of art assigments for children with topic of the city that should increase children's perception of the urban environment. Some of them are inspirated by psychological geography which is based on the human perception of the environment and its reflection in our consciousness. The pedagogical reflection of realized tasks is also included in this part of work. The conclusion of the thesis is...

Learning in New Space : Knowledge Sourcing for Innovation in Northern Swedish New Space Companies / Lärande i rymdindustrin : Kunskapskällor för innovation i nordsvenska rymdbolag

Filip Nikitas, Metallinos Log, Sandra Lipic, Persson January 2020 (has links)
The New Space industry is a novel branch of the space industry focusing on innovation and commercialization. It experiences very swift growth, although only a fraction of this growth has taken place in Sweden. In order to change this, policymakers are investing funds and efforts into developing the Swedish New Space industry, including the Kvarken Space Center project, aimed at developing the Northern Swedish New Space industry. Here, we see public support in developing a high-tech innovation ecosystem in a peripheral area. This is a topic offering multiple research streams on the most efficient development methods, two of which juxtapose the knowledge ecosystem and intercompany collaborations respectively. With that in mind, we formulated the following research question:   How are collaborations and the knowledge ecosystem used to source knowledge for the innovation process?   To approach to the subject, we gathered literature on innovation systems and ecosystems in order to analyze the importance of the knowledge ecosystem and the various shapes the industry can assume. This information is linked to theory on knowledge types and sourcing methods considering tacit and codified knowledge, which through different constellations form different needs of knowledge sources.   Our empirical approach investigated how the companies used different knowledge sources, namely collaborations, the knowledge ecosystem, and other sources, including networks, monitoring, and mobility. Thereafter, we considered the effects of outstanding factors, including funding and the peripheral region, on knowledge input in innovation.   We identified that companies in the upstream industry node, i.e. those related to launch activities and vehicles, and companies in the downstream node, i.e. those extracting data from space, both use engineering knowledge. Engineering knowledge requires both tacit and some codified knowledge, suggesting similar knowledge inputs for both nodes. However, different node traits lead to different inputs. Upstream companies see low degrees of knowledge transfer, especially from the knowledge ecosystem and from collaborations due to NDAs and intellectual property regards, and tacit knowledge input from external sources is particularly lacking.  Downstream actors see few constraints to using the investigated knowledge sources, although collaborations saw difficulties due to complexities in structuring them. However, many unilateral complementarities are seen from the knowledge ecosystem, leading to higher knowledge input particularly from networks, while also boosting collaborations to some extent. This was also partly observed in upstream companies. Thus, the knowledge ecosystem sees significant use, although much is indirect, while collaborations see less use.   Our main findings are that policymakers and the knowledge ecosystem should focus more on sources of tacit knowledge, such as students, while investing in network-boosting activities as industry events. Companies, especially upstream ones, should utilize collaborations more. Upstream companies should also utilize the local knowledge ecosystem more, as the rights to intellectual property produced by private actors in universities belong to the producer. Regarding future research, we warrant studies on knowledge sourcing in New Space companies and other knowledge sources, such as networks as a compensatory knowledge source.

Analýza sociálních sítí aktérů činných v území vnitřní periferie na pomezí středních, západních a jižních Čech / Analysis of Social Networks of Actors Active within the inner periphery in the Border Area of Central, West and South Bohemia

Izakovičová, Hana January 2021 (has links)
The thesis deals with the analysis of the social networks of actors of public, non-profit and private sectors active within the inner periphery, which is located in the border area of central, west and south Bohemia. The objective of the thesis is to try to identify and characterize social networks of actors active in the area of interest and acquire knowledge about the complexity, density and overall organization of these networks. The main research questions of the thesis include evaluation of the complexity of the identified social networks, characterization of frequency of collaboration between the actors in networks, or assess the influence of the actors within the area of interest from their perspective. The effort is also to compare the analyzed results of these networks within three individual parts of the area of interest. The input data are gained using the content analysis of documents, namely the content analysis of local periodicals published within the area of interest Then, using a method of social networks analysis and the UCINET program, the features and characteristics of identified social networks of actors within the area of interest such as size, density, centrality of a network, or specification of core and periphery actors of such network. Part of the empirical research is...
