The effect of the dietary inclusion of canola oilcake, full-fat canola and sweet lupins on the production performance and fat composition of broilers and pigs

Smith, Natasha 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric (Animal Sciences))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The demand for protein for human and animal nutrition in South Africa is increasing and it will continuously increase. The effect of replacing soybean oilcake meal as protein source for broilers and full-fat soybean meal for weaner pigs, with different levels of sweet lupins (Lupinus angustifolius), canola oilcake and full-fat canola was examined. A basal diet with soybean oilcake as protein source was mixed with a diet using either sweet lupins or canola oilcake or full-fat canola in ratios of 100%, 67% and 33% respectively. In the broiler trial the test diets were fed for a period of six weeks with or without the enzyme Vegpro (Alltech). Pigs were fed the test diets, with and without Roxazyme® enzyme, ad libitum from 8.5 to 25 kg live weight. The fatty acid content of the fat pads of the broilers raised on the different diets was determined. The pigs were kept in the trial up to the grower- finisher phase. The fatty acid content of the carcass fat and muscle of pigs raised on the different diets was determined. The inclusion of enzymes had no effect on the growth, feed intake or feed conversion ratio of broilers fed the test diets. The provision of external dietary enzymes to the weaner pig diets failed to improve either dry matter intake or growth rate, but improved the feed conversion ratio. Broiler weights at six weeks of age were significantly higher for the control diet compared to the 20% lupin diet. There was no significant difference in the feed intake as the lupin content of the diets increased. The feed conversion ratio did not differ significantly between the control diet and the 6.6% lupin diet but became significantly poorer as the lupin content increased to 13.2% and 20% of the test diet. There were no significant differences in production performance of the control diet and the canola oilcake containing diet. The broiler weights at six weeks decreased significantly with each increase in the canola oilcake content of the diets. The feed intake of the 20% canola oilcake diet at week six was significantly less than the intake of the control diet, but not significantly less than the 6.6% and 13.2% canola oilcake diets. The feed conversion ratio of the control diet was significantly better than the 13.2% and 20% canola oilcake diets. No significant differences were found in week six between the 6.6% full-fat canola diet and the control diet for broiler weights and feed intake. The feed conversion ratio of the broilers fed the 13.2% and 20% full-fat canola diets was significantly poorer than the control diet. The final body weights of the weaner piglets fed the control diet were significantly higher than the final body weights of weaner piglets fed the lupin containing diets. The average daily gain of the weaner piglets fed the control diet was significantly higher than the gain of the weaner piglets fed the lupin containing diets. No significant differences in the feed intake and feed conversion ratio between the different lupin inclusion levels were detected. There were no significant differences in body weight, feed intake, average daily gain and the feed conversion ratio, between the various full-fat canola containing diets and the control diet. A significant difference in body weight was found between the weaner piglets fed the 20% canola oilcake diet and the weaner piglets fed the control diet. There were no significant differences in feed intake between the various inclusion levels of canola oilcake. The control and 6.6% canola oilcake containing diets had significantly higher average daily gains than the 20% canola oilcake containing diet. In the final trial the finisher pigs fed the test diet containing 25.00% lupins, had a final body weight significantly lighter than the final body weight of the finisher pigs fed the other test diets. The finisher pigs fed the test diet containing 25.00% lupins, also had a significantly reduced average daily gain and feed intake. The feed intake of the 25.00% canola oilcake diet was significantly lees than the feed intake of the 16.75% full-fat canola containing diet. The feed conversion ratio of the 25.00% lupin containing diet was significantly poorer than the feed conversion ratio of the 16.75% lupin containing diet, 8.25% lupin containing diet, 16.75% full-fat canola containing diet, 25.00% canola oilcake containing diet and the control diet. In a choice feeding trial growing pigs were offered four diets with four different protein sources: sweet lupins (25% inclusion level), canola oilcake (25% inclusion level), full-fat canola (25% inclusion level) and soybean oilcake (25% inclusion level), while their daily intakes were recorded. In a second choice feeding trial pigs were offered ten different diets with increasing levels (6.6%, 13.2%, 20%) of either sweet lupins, canola oilcake meal or full-fat canola meal. The pigs consumed significantly more of the soybean oilcake containing diet compared to diets containing the alternative protein sources. Pigs consumed significantly less of the full-fat canola diet compared to the sweet lupin and canola oilcake diets. Ten different canola cultivars were collected from two different locations in the Mediterranean rainfall area of South Africa namely the Western Cape (Swartland) and Southern Cape (Rûens) grain producing areas. The sinapine and glucosinolate content of various canola cultivars was compared and the influence of locality on the sinapine and glucosinolate content of the canola cultivars was determined. There were no significant differences (P < 0.05) in sinapine content when the canola produced in the Western and Southern Cape were compared. Varola 54 and Rainbow cultivars had significantly higher (P < 0.05) sinapine contents compared to the Varola 50 cultivar. Samples of lupins, field peas, faba beans and narbon beans were collected and analysed for amino acids, alkaloids, non-starch polysaccharides, tannin and starch. The digestible energy value of these alternative protein sources for pigs was determined. Significant differences were found in the amino acid content of the various crops. The alkaloid content of the lupins varied significantly between the sweet and bitter lupin varieties. Sweet L. angustifolius cultivars contained ca 50mg/kg and the bitter L. angustifolius cultivars ca 15000mg/kg alkaloids. The mean alkaloid content of L. albus cultivars was ca 1300mg/kg. The faba beans, narbon beans and peas had significantly higher values for tannins and starch, compared to lupins.

Ackerman, Dirk J. (Dirk Jacobus) 08 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD) -- Stellenbosch University, 1995. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Graling in the Kruger National Park. south of Phalaborwa Gate, is contaminated with copper, probably from a nearby copper refinery. Cattle in the neighbourhood have died from copper poisoning while the average copper concentration in the livers of impala in the Krgler National Park, was found to be abnormally high. The possibility exists that the ultrastructure of spermatozoa may serve as an indicator of environmental conditions. To examine this statement further, the purpose of this study includes the following: - To describe the ultrastructure of normal impala sperm as well as their abnormalities. - To quantify the sperm abnormalities of each experimental animal and to relate the abnormalities with the copper concentration in the impala liver, in order to determine whether any correlation exists between these two variables. Impala have been terminated monthly, from 1992.06.09 to 1993.05.15. in the vicinity of Phalaborwa Gate and in the Skukuza area for other research projects. Their sperm were made available for this study. The control group consisted of 20 animals which comprised 14 animals from an area, not contaminated with copper, along the Nwaswitshaka spruit near Skukula and 6 animals originally from the same area but which had been kept in captivity at Skukuza on a diet, not contaminated with copper. The experimental group consisted of 44 animals which comprised 32 animals from copper contaminated grazing along the Tshutshi spruit south of Phalaborwa Gate and 12 animals captured along the Nwaswitshaka spruit which were kept on a copper contaminated diet in captivity at Skukuza. Sperm from the epididymis of each animal were collected and fixed in a temporary laboratory. The sperm were processed at the Electron Microscopy Unit of the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria and studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The copper concentration in the liver was analyzed and bone marrow collected of each animal in order to determine the condition of the animal. The external morphology of a normal impala sperm was documented by means of SEM and the dimensions of the sperm determined. SEM micrographs of observed sperm abnormalities were taken. Percentages for normal sperm and the percentages of some abnormalities of a control group (Average liver copper concentration - ALCC = 37.9 ppm WB) were calculated. The same percentages were also calculated for an experimental group (ALCC = 104 ppm WB). The control group and the experimental group exhibited 91.6% and 93.6% normal sperm respectively. The difference in percentage sperm abnormalities of the two groups was of the same order. The increased copper in the livers of the experimental group has thus not lead to an increase of the percentage macro-abnormalities observed with SEM. The ultrastructure of normal impala sperm were described and documented with micrographs by means of TEM. The deviations of the normal sperm ultrastructure were also recorded on micrographs. Percentages were calculated for the normal sperm sections, as well as the abnormalities of some sperm sections of a contrl group (ALCC = 33.86 ppm WB). The same percentages were also calculated for an experimental group (ALCC = 122.5 ppm WB). For the control group the average percentage sperm neck sections with vacuoles was : 31.5% and for the experimental group this percentage was : 57.9%. The increased copper concentrations in the livers of the experimental group thus led to an increase of the percentage of sperm necks with vacuoles. There is also reason to believe that the difference of the percentages of sections of the sperm head, in the control and experimental group, should be remarkably greater. A graphic analysis of the TEM-data has also shown that a statistically significant correlation exists between the percentage of sperm with vacuoles in the neck and the copper concentrations in the livers of impalas. The conclusion is that high level copper concentrations exert a detrimental effect on the ultrastructure of the sperm neck. The possibility also exists that copper concentrations in impala liver > 500 ppm WB. will show a correlation with the percentages of some of the other abnormalities observed.

Lemos, Guilherme Cazerta. January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: The productive performance and the interference of fluorine in supplemented Nelore bovines with alternative sources of phosphorus were evaluated. The sources of phosphorus and relations P:F had been distributed in the following treatments: control (CONTNEG), dicalcium phospate 120:1 (FB-120), 30:1 (FB-30) and 10:1 (FB-10), monodicalcium 60:1 (MBC-60), triple superphosphate 30:1 (SFT-30) and Cajati Rock 10:1 (ROCHA-10). Forty nine castrated steers with nine months of age averaging 230 kg distributed in seven pens, with water available and a complete mineral mixture, except phosphorus. The ration was formulated for a weight gain of 0,500 kg/day. Animals of SFT-30 treatment had reached 520 kg approximately five months before ROCHA-10 treatment, due to the P solubility in the sources. The analyses of phosphorus in the bone had shown statistical differences only between treatment CONTNEG and the treatments with dicalcium phosphate. Bone fluorine analyses were highly associated to fluorine quantity in the phosphorous sources evaluated. It can be concluded that the different phosphorus sources used had influenced animal performance. / Mestre

Proteína láctea e zinco suplementar em dietas de leitões recém-desmamados / Milk protein and supplemental zinc in weaned pigs diets

Tse, Marcos Livio Panhoza 21 August 2007 (has links)
A hundred and twenty Dalland pigs (60 in each experiment), weaned at 21 days of age and with 5,43 kg ± 0,46 (Exp. 1) e 5,81 kg ± 0,54 (Exp. 2) of average live weight were used to evaluate the presence of milk protein or supplemental zinc on performance, IGF-I, GH and zinc plasma concentrations, intestinal morphology and relative weight of liver and small intestine. A 14-d (Exp.1) and 28-d (Exp.2) randomized complete block design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (milk protein and supplemental zinc): T1 = basal diet with corn and soybean meal (BD) with milk protein (MP) + 2000 ppm of zinc (ZnO) + 250 ppm of zinc (Zn-amino acid); T2 = BD with MP with no supplemental zinc; T3 = BD with no MP + 2000 ppm of zinc (ZnO) + 250 ppm of zinc (Zn- amino acid); T4 = BD with no MP and no supplemental zinc. In Exp.1, pigs fed with supplemental zinc had lower feed conversion (FC) for 1-7d period (P<.04) and for 1-14d period showed higher body weight at 28 days (BW28) (P<.06) and average daily gain (ADG) (P<.05). The MP improved FC for 1-7d (P<.001) and 1-14d period (P<.02), respectively. For plasma concentrations, supplemental zinc decreased IGF-I concentrations (P<.007) while there was an increase IGF-I concentration for MP at 14-d. For morphology data, MP provided shorter crypts depth (CD) on jejune at 7-d (P<.07) and higher villus height (VH) on duodenum at 14-d (P<.04). There was interaction between zinc and MP for VH:CD relation on jejune at 7-d (P<.009) and also this relation was bigger for animals fed with MP (P<.004) and supplemental zinc (P<.02). The relative weight of liver at 14-d was smaller for animal fed with supplemental zinc (P<.02). In Exp.2, for 1-14d period, the animals fed with MP decreased average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P<.01), while the supplemental zinc increased BW14 (P<.07) e decreased ADFI (P<.01). For 14-28d period, there was interaction between MP and supplemental zinc for BW28 e ADG (P<.05). Also, the animals fed supplemental zinc had higher BW28 e ADG. For the whole period (1-28d), there was interaction between MP and supplemental zinc (P<.07) for BW28, ADG e FC and considering isolated factors, supplemental zinc provided higher BW28 (P<.007) e higher ADG (P<.007) and MP for this period provided better FC (P<.01).

Requirements and efficiency of energy and protein use for Dorper × Santa Inês sheep fed diets containing roughages with different nutritive value

Galvani, Diego Barcelos 22 August 2011 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of using roughages with different nutritive value on requirements and efficiency of energy and protein use of growing ½ Dorper × ½ Santa Inês sheep. For this purpose, eighty four non-castrated male lambs were weaned at 56 days of age (initial BW = 18.0 ± 3.3 kg) and penned in individual stalls, being divided into two groups: VBVN - lambs fed diet containing roughage with low nutritive value (sugarcane bagasse in natura); and VAVN - lambs fed diet containing roughage with high nutritive value (coastcross hay). From these lambs, seven animals from each group were randomly selected and slaughtered after a 10-day adaptation period (reference animals). Twenty one animals in each group were then fed ad libitum and slaughtered at 25, 35, or 45 kg of live weight (seven animals per group), and the remaining 28 animals were submitted to one of two levels of feed restriction: either 70 or 50% of the ad libitum intake. Concentrations and retentions of body fat, nitrogen, and energy were determined. Additionally, six non-castrated males (PV mean = 52.3 ± 6.9 kg), canulated in the rumen, were kept in metabolic cages to evaluate diets digestibility, and to estimate metabolizable energy concentrations of the diets and the metabolizable protein intake. Diet degradability was assessed by an in vitro assay. Dry matter intake and average daily weight gain were higher for animals fed the diet containing coastcross hay. On the other hand, better gain-to-feed ratio was observed for those fed the diet containing sugarcane bagasse. There was no effect of intake level on metabolizable energy content of the diet, but it was higher in the diet containing sugarcane bagasse (3.18 vs. 2.94). Animals receiving the diet containing sugarcane bagasse presented higher body fat and energy concentrations, as a response of a larger visceral fat deposition. Using roughages with low nutritive value in high energy diets for growing lambs, does not increases energy requirements for maintenance. However, increasing concentrate proportion in the diet improves the efficiency of metabolizable energy use for weight gain, which is directly associated with a larger retention of visceral fat. Under a meat production perspective, however, that increased nutritional efficiency should be took with caution, since it is related to the deposition of tissues not intended to human consumption. Protein requirements for growth of lambs ½ Dorper × ½ Santa Inês are accurately predicted by the AFRC (1993) equations. None of the current nutritional systems, however, is able to predict energy requirements of these animals from 15 to 45 kg of body weight.

This work had the objective to characterize chemically and physically the meat of chicken thighs, fed with different lipid sources (soy oil, acid soy oil and chicken offal oil) and the mixture of these (25% soy oil + 75% acid soy oil - OS25AC75, 50% soy oil + 50% acid soy oil - OS50AC50, 50% soy oil + 50% chicken oil - OS50FR50) and to evaluate the oxidative stability of the meat, during nine months of frozen storage, under -18ºC. Bromatological and fatty acid composition, pH and color determinations were performed for the chemical and physical evaluation, as well TBARS value for the chicken thigh oxidative stability monitoring. The moisture and the crude protein values ranged from 68 to 70% and from 16.33 to 18.19% respectively, within the range of values found in the literature. The fats contents from 11.0 to 11.72 % were higher than those found in the literature, which probably is justified by the differences in animal breed, age of slaughtering and type of feeding. Along the experiment, the values of pH varied from 5.88 to 6.39%, however only OS25AC75 was influenced by the time. The color was affected by storage in all treatments. The fatty acid content of lipid fraction of the thigh chicken meat was in accordance whith the literature, the chicken meat of animals fed with diet added of acid soy oil presented a least unsatturated fat acid of the all treatments. The average TBARS values varied from 0.21 to 0.90 mg malonaldehyde/kg. The thigh meat from broilers fed OS50FR50 was the one that presented the least stability, even more significant at the end of the experiment wich was confirmed with intensity rancidity flavor detected by the sensory analysis. In general the time of storage affected the oxidative quality of the lipid fraction.

Óleos essenciais de plantas brasileiras como manipuladores da fermentação ruminal in vitro / Essential oils from Brazilian plants as in vitro rumen fermentation modifiers

Araujo, Rafael Canonenco de 03 February 2011 (has links)
In an attempt to reproduce the benefits of ionophores on rumen fermentation, researchers have been exploiting the antimicrobial properties of plant secondary metabolites. In vitro gas production techniques are widely used during the screening phase. Essential oils are hydrophobic compounds, being usual its dilution in ethanol for in vitro experiments. In the rumen environment, ethanol is metabolized mostly to acetate. In the first experiment, the objective was to evaluate the effects of 10, 100 and 1000 µL of ethanol in 75 mL of buffered rumen fluid, corresponding to 0.13, 1.3, and 13.3 µL/mL, respectively. Ethanol inclusions of 100 and 1000 µL affected in vitro rumen fermentation. The inclusion of 10 µL of ethanol had no effects on fermentation, except for the tendency (P < 0.10) of gas production increase or valerate increase when incubating hay or a high-concentrate diet, respectively. It is suggested that ethanol should be included at the lowest dose as possible, which corresponded to 10 µL (0.13 µL/mL) in our conditions. The second experiment dealt with the use of blanks (flasks without substrate, containing only inoculum and incubation medium) in in vitro experiments to estimate net production of gas and methane (CH4), as well as net degradation of organic matter incubated. It was demonstrated that rumen additives (monensin, carvacrol, eugenol) affected fermentation of flasks containing substrate and blanks. Thus, specific blanks (blanks containing additive) are necessary when rumen additives are evaluated in vitro. In the third experiment, in vitro incubations were conducted to screen the effects of essential oils on rumen fermentation. The selected essential oils were: cordia (Cordia verbenacea), Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolius; extracted from leaves or fruits), macela (Achyrocline satureoides), guaco (Mikania glomerata), carqueja (Baccharis cylindrica), arnica (Lychnophora pinaster), West Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), East Indian lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), and citronella (Cymbopogon winterianum). Oleoresins from copaiba mari-mari (Copaifera reticulata), copaiba angelim (Copaifera multijuga), copaiba zoro (Copaifera langsdorfii), and copaiba vermelha (Copaifera langsdorfii) were also included. The essential oils from cordia, macela and all copaiba oleoresins had little effect on in vitro rumen fermentation. The remaining essential oils showed a clear antimicrobial effect, mainly on truly degraded organic matter. The most promising results were obtained when using high-concentrate diet and inoculum from animals fed this same diet. The best results were observed for Brazilian peppertree (leaves and fruits) and arnica essential oils. In the condition of high-concentrate diet, these oils increased propionate concentration, had lower acetate to propionate ratio, and/or reduced CH4 production. The essential oils from Brazilian peppertree (leaves and fruits) and arnica were selected for further in vivo evaluation.

Efeito da adição de diferentes fontes de óleo vegetal na dieta de ovinos sobre o desempenho, a composição e o perfil de ácidos graxos na carne e no leite / Effects of different dietary sources of vegetable oils on performance, milk composition and fatty acid profile of milk and meat of sheep

Maia, Michelle de Oliveira 19 August 2011 (has links)
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance, milk composition, meat and milk fatty acid profile of ewes and lambs fed diets containing canola oil, sunflower oil or castor oil. Additionally, two metabolism trials were conducted to determine the effects of the diets on nutrient digestibility and ruminal measures. Experiment I: 44 Santa Inês ewes with lambs were allotted in a randomized complete block design and fed a control diet (no oil) containing 50% roughage or diets with the addition of 3% of canola oil, sunflower oil or castor oil. The addition of oil decreased DM intake and increased ether extract intake. However, there was no effect on milk production and lamb performance. The percentage of milk fat and milk total solids increased with castor oil. Diets with canola and sunflower oils decreased short chain fatty acids (FA), medium chain, saturated FA and atherogenicity index; and increased C18:0, C18:1-9, C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 (CLA), C18:1 trans-11, long chain and monounsaturated FA. In addition, these diets increased polyunsaturated:saturated (PUFA:SFA) ratio compared to the control diet. Experiment II: Four ruminally cannulated ram lambs were assigned to a 4 x 4 Latin Square design to determine the effects of the diets used in Experiment I on intake, nutrient digestibility and ruminal measures. There was no difference (P>0.10) on DM intake and nutrient digestibility. The oil addition increased pH values and decreased short chain FA. Experiment III: the objective was to evaluate the performance of 36 crossbred Dorper x Santa Inês lambs fed diets with 90% concentrate hay with 3% canola oil, sunflower oil or castor oil. There was no difference on DM intake, average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion, with average across diets of 957.7 g, 326.4 g and 3.0 kg DMI/kg ADG, respectively. These diets were also evaluated in four ruminally cannulated ram lambs in a 4x4 Latin Square design. There was no difference in DM intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen metabolism and ruminal measures, with the exception for ammonia concentration that decreased with oil addition. In the Experiment IV were determine: carcass characteristics, Longissimus dorsi fatty acid profile and physical-chemical composition of the lambs used in Experiment III. The diet with castor oil increased meat ether extract. Sunflower diet decreased C18:1-9 and increased concentrations of C18:1 trans. Castor oil decreased the concentration of C18:2 and PUFA:SFA ratio compared to canola and sunflower oils. Canola and sunflower decreased the concentration of C16:0, increased the concentration of C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 (CLA) and C18:3 -6. Canola oil increased the concentration of C18:3 -3 and sunflower oil increased 6:3 ratio compared to castor oil.

Imunoestimulantes dietéticos e respostas biológicas, bioquímicas e hematológicas de juvenis de Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) / Dietary immunostimulants and biological, biochemical and hematological responses of Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) juveniles.

Sado, Ricardo Yuji 18 December 2008 (has links)
The growth of aquaculture production as well as fish consumption can lead to intensification of fish production systems. The growing environmental concern regarding production of fish as food has required fish farmers to conform to Best Management Practices (BPMs), and that include reduction or, preferably, complete banning antibiotics from the production cycle through the use of immunostimulants. This study was set out to determine effects of different dietary additives (levamisole, vitamin E and mannan oligosaccharides - MOS) on biological, hematological and biochemical responses of pacu. All additives affected analyzed variables regarding to growth parameters and hematology. Levamisole presented time and dose efficacy, best results presented in fish supplemented with 100 mg kg-1 of dietary levamisole for 15 days. Vitamin E supplementation is essential for growth and maintenance of normal hematological values for pacu. In the present study, fish supplemented with 82.7 mg kg-1 of dietary vitamin E presented the best growth and no hematological disturbs. Dietary MOS did not present consistent results. Although not significant (p>0,05), MOS-supplemented fish presented higher total villi perimeter, in absolute values, than fish fed control diet. However studies regarding the mode of action of MOS as prebiotic for pacu as well as the effects of levamisole on fish growth are necessary.

Marcos Livio Panhoza Tse 21 August 2007 (has links)
