Ciências e mundos aquecidos: narrativas mistas de mudanças climáticas em São Paulo / Sciences and heated worlds: mixed narratives of climatic changes in São Paulo

Bailão, André Sicchieri 13 October 2014 (has links)
This study concerns a description of nature and society production, according to Bruno Latour, in the human and non-human networks of climate change science in Sao Paulo. Climate change is at the eye of the storm in one of the most important scientific and sociopolitical debates of our time, due to the risks it presents to the old classifications of modern science, which distinguish the human and natural dominions. This study aimed at promoting developments in anthropological theory and ethnography in the fields of climate change, anthropology of science and technology, science studies, and actor-network-theory. The research started with mapping the network of climate change scientists in Sao Paulo dedicated to the production, development, and use of computer climate models and with selecting the literature concerning anthropology and history of science and climate change science. Based on interviews of mapped researchers and the selected literature, this study discusses following actor-network-theory the history of human and natural classifications at risk in climate change science and the different sociotechnical elements and relations that compose it and are produced by it.

Formuler les valeurs du nucléaire : Communautés, équations, budgets et débats autour des déchets nucléaires / Formulating Nuclear Values : Communities, Equations, Budgets and Debates with Nuclear Waste

Saraç-Lesavre, Başak 09 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis approaches valuation as an on-going, constructive and contested process. She addresses this theoretical issue through the study of a very complex object of valuation: nuclear waste in the context of the United States. As an ontologically ambivalent object, nuclear waste can be valued or devalued from many angles, which provides an intriguing and exciting test bed to unfold a sociology of valuation. The thesis examines a multitude of sites where the question of the formulation of nuclear values is being raised. These sites are, for example, the design and vicissitudes of the budgetary process conceived to finance the North American nuclear waste program, the trials set up in order to distribute the financial responsibility of a material expected to remain hazardous during the next million years, the efforts of a group of actors to attach the future of their community to the future of nuclear waste, or the uses of an economic convention to estimate the economic value of spent nuclear fuel. This thesis shows that processes of valuation are never limited to the object that is subjected to valuation and proposes the notion of revaluation, first, to articulate the intertwined relationship between the processes of evaluation and valuation, and second, to signify the particularity of the period during which the research has been undertaken, namely a moment when the revival of nuclear energy was publicly debated, and a moment when the U.S. government was seeking to reformulate its nuclear waste policy.

Globalization On the Ground: Health, Development, and Volunteerism in Meatu, Tanzania

Nichols-Belo, Amy 20 August 2003 (has links)
AHEAD (Adventures in Health, Education, and Agricultural Development) is a small grass-roots non-governmental organization working in the rural Meatu, District in Northern Tanzania. The AHEAD project employs Tanzanian nurses who provide health education, child weighing and nutritional counseling, family planning, and antenatal services. AHEAD has recently developed a water quality testing initiative in order to combat unsafe water supplies using solar pasteurization. Dr. Robert Metcalf, an AHEAD volunteer offers "expertise" to Meatu through transfer of solar cooking technology. Each summer, AHEAD takes volunteers into this setting who bring with them both "altruistic" and non-altruistic reasons for volunteering, economic and social capital, and a taste of the world beyond Meatu. This thesis looks at the Summer 2001 AHEAD experience ethnographically from three perspectives: 1) as public health practice, 2) in relation to the contested domain of international "development" , and 3) situated within the larger literature of non-profit and volunteer action research. These three snapshots of AHEAD suggest a project of globalization, theorized as the flow of people, goods, and information across boundaries. / Master of Science

Unruly energies : provocations of renewable energy development in a northern German village

Carlson, Jennifer D. 23 October 2014 (has links)
This dissertation asks how inhabitants of a sustainable village are living out Germany’s transition from nuclear to renewable energy. The sustainable village remains a locus of optimistic attachments for renewable energy advocates, who argue that a decentralized power grid will enable people to more directly participate in power production and politics as “energy citizens.” Yet while rural areas have become sites of speculation, innovation and growth, few rural-dwellers are enfranchised in (or profiting from) the technoscientific projects in their midst. I draw upon 13 months of fieldwork in a northern German village transformed by wind turbines, photovoltaics and biofuels to consider why, asking what kinds of public life flourish in the absence of democratic engagement with renewable technologies. This ethnography engages the village as multiply constituted across domains of everyday life, including transit, farming, waste management, domestic life, and social gatherings. I found that environmental policy, everyday practices, and the area’s material histories combined to produce ontologies—senses of what exists—that circumscribe citizen participation in the energy sector, affording more formal opportunities to men than to women, and privileging farmers’ interests in plans that impacted the larger community. These findings illuminate how many villagers become ambivalent toward the project of the energy transition and disenfranchised from its implementation. Yet many who were excluded from formal participation also engaged with renewable technologies as they sensed out their worlds, using tropes of sustainable energy and technoscientific materials to place themselves in this emerging energy polity. Their everyday worldmaking brimmed with what I call unruly energies, structures of feeling that registered more as affects than as discourse. In the village, these took form as sensory disturbances, disquiet among neighbors, technoscientific optimism and skepticism toward environmental policy. These affective modes of attention, investment and participation were vital aspects of public life that shaped the transition’s unfolding. They exceeded liberal models of renewable energy citizenship, which presume that socioeconomic interest and environmental commitment are universal among citizens. In this way, unruly energies compel more nuanced attention to the multiple, contingent, site-specific ways in which citizenship takes form in the making of eco-capitalist energy infrastructure. / text
