Obesity is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in fat mass of the body, which is reflected in an increase in body weight. To monitor and evaluate obesity and follow obese children and adolescents, you need a fast and comfortable method to estimate body composition accurately and safely. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between measures of body composition in obese adolescents treated at Community and Social Center of Vila Lobato HCFMRP / USP by anthropometry, bioelectrical impedance and deuterium oxide dilution, proposing an equation. We evaluated 40 obese adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. The results showed that in relation to pubertal stage, 57.5% of female adolescents and 40.0% of male patients met the three Tanner stage, characterized by the onset of pubertal development and none was in stage five, indicating that most have not completed the growth spurt. According to anthropometric data and body composition by the method of bioelectrical impedance and dilution of deuterium oxide, both gender did not differ significantly. Results obtained by the BIA, when compared with data from the method of dilution of deuterium oxide, showed a weak correlation in these variables, lean body mass and total body water and a strong correlation to body fat mass, although we found that this agreement was not close to 1. Therefore, we need to adjust the specific formulas using deuterium as the gold standard for assessing children and adolescents, especially when it comes to obesity. They prepared formulas that can assist health professionals in the assessment of body composition in obese adolescents, not limited to body mass index, a criterion that does not measure body fat and lean mass. But it is not appropriate to extrapolate these equations outside the scope of the data. In other words, while the linear regression models were adjusted well, it is necessary to validate... Anthropometric measurements versus computed tomography for the assessment of metabolic syndrome in the Bellville South mixed ancestry community, South AfricaIsmail, Saaiga January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Radiography))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors which include abdominal obesity, hyperglycaemia, hyper-triglyceridaemia, low HDL-cholesterol and hypertension. This cluster of metabolic deviations is believed to be the primary driver of the double global epidemic of diabetes (DM) and CVD, conditions which account for much of the social and economic global burden of disease. Similar to the global trend, a high prevalence of MetS (62%) and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) (28.2%) has been reported for the South African mixed ancestry population, with CVD risk significantly higher in subjects with DM. The increase in MetS prevalence is driven by the obesity epidemic and anthropometric cut-off values to define MetS for this particular component of the disease has been reported to differ widely between different populations and ethnicities. Currently the waist circumference (WC) cut-off value for MetS diagnosis needs to be determined and validated per ethnic group as opposed to the previously used European derived cut-off values (Alberti et al., 2006; 2009). Validation of the WC cut-off value needs to be against one of the so called gold standards of central obesity measurement, such as Computer Tomography (CT). This technique can measure subcutaneous fat (SAT) and visceral fat (VAT) individually, which is important because VAT has been reported to be associated with MetS and CVD. The current study forms part of a large research group, investigating the prevalence and risk factors for MetS and T2DM in the South African mixed ancestry population.

Objective: To investigate the association between maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy and anthropometric measures of infant at three and six months. Methods: A longitudinal observational study using the mother-child pairs in convenience sample divided into five groups of pregnant women: diabetic (DM), hypertensive (HYP), smokers (SMO), who had small children for gestational age (SGA) and a control group (CTL). Researchers selected the sample in three public hospitals in Porto Alegre, South of Brazil, in the period from 2011 to 2015. Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) evaluated the maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy on the seventh day postpartum. Anthropometric measures used were weight, length, and skinfold thickness (SK). They assessed at birth, at three and six months of child. Linear regression was used to analyze the interaction between caffeine intake and SK. Results: We investigated 272 mother-child pairs: 41 DM, 26 HYP, 68 SMO 25 SGA and 112 CTL. There were no differences in children’s anthropometric measures of mothers consuming and not consuming caffeine (P >0.05). Children of DM group had the highest adjusted average for skinfolds at 3 months. There was interaction between caffeine consumption during pregnancy and the sum of SK of children at 3 months for DM and CTL groups (P <0.05). The difference between adjusted means for SKs infant and caffeine consumption by pregnant women were not observed at six months. Conclusions: Maternal caffeine intake influenced values of SKs at 3 months of age, reducing to the children of the DM group and increasing in the CTL group.

Including plus size people in workplace designMasson, Annabel E. January 2017 (has links)
Over 60% of the adult population in the United Kingdom is now overweight or obese or classed as plus size . This is higher than almost all other developed countries in the world. Even with numerous public health interventions, the incidence of being plus size continues to rise potentially changing the demographics of the working population. This presents a challenge to those involved in workplace design as the design process relies upon the utilization of appropriate anthropometric data to establish the percentage of the user population that will be accommodated by the design. The aim of this thesis is to identify issues affecting plus size people in the working environment, not previously explored within the literature. Furthermore, by understanding the size and shape of this population via the collection of key anthropometric data, this will help inform the design of safe, comfortable, inclusive and productive working environments for plus size people within the United Kingdom. A first stage Scoping Study (n=135) found that fit (equipment, tools, furniture, uniforms and personal protective equipment) and space (circulation and shared spaces within the working environment) were issues of concern to plus size people. This suggests that aspects of the current design of the workplace are not suitable, and may even exclude plus size people. A better understanding of the anthropometric requirements of plus size workers is therefore required. Self-reported anthropometric data is an acceptable way of studying large and geographically diverse populations and may assist in accessing the hard to reach plus size working population. A validation study (n=20) established that self measurement of 14 key anthropometric measurements, using a self measurement instruction guide, was a feasible and acceptable data collection method for a larger scale anthropometric study to further understand the body size and shape of plus size people at work. A unique measure of knee splay (for a non-pregnant population) was included. Defined as the distance between the outer borders of the knees whilst seated in the preferred sitting position it represents the observed sitting postures of plus size individuals not captured in existing anthropometric data sources. The larger scale Plus Size Anthropometry Study (n=101) collected anthropometric data of plus size working age people via self measurement. The findings indicated that the study population was substantially larger in circumference, depth and breadth measurements than the population of existing anthropometric data sources. Knee splay was also identified as a key anthropometric variable for plus size people, however, it is not included in any datasets or literature relating to plus size people at work. These factors may contribute to high exclusion rates from current design practices that seek to accommodate the 5th to 95th or 99th percentile of users and may explain the high incidence of fit and space issues reported by participants with a BMI over 35kg/m2 . Finally, semi structured interviews with stakeholders (n=10) explored how they would like the data from the plus size anthropometry study communicated and any additional requirements of a resource aimed at supporting stakeholders in meeting the needs of plus size people within the working environment. The primary concern from stakeholders was the lack of existing data on the size and shape of the plus size working population and the importance of access to such data in whatever format. A range of ideas were suggested including case studies, guidance and access to training which may assist them in understanding the needs of their end users ultimately supporting the inclusion of plus size people in workplace design.

Vliv antropometrie na výkon a kritickou fázi pohybu při bench pressu / The anthopometric relation to bench press performance and sticking regionŠiroký, Michal January 2018 (has links)
Title: The anthopometric relation to bench press performance and sticking region Objectives: The aim of the thesis is to determine the influence of anthropometric parameters on the performance in bench press and its critical phase of motion. Another objective of this work is to determine the differences of influence anthropometry between 1 RM, 4 RM, 8 RM and 12 RM as well as anthropometric impact on the area occurring before the critical phase of motion and on the area after the critical phase of motion. Methods: This is a quantitative research based on the comparison of measured anthropometric parameters with performance and kinematics by bench press analysis. For experimental methods it was used laboratory conditions and it was used methods of analysis to evaluate the acquired data. Results: The results of the work show that anthropometric parameters affect the performance especially at 1 RM and 12 RM. Overall, the forearm has the greatest impact, reaching a strong negative correlation r = -0.69. Lower arm abduction at 12 RM has a large correlation coefficient r = 0.68, and the chest ratio with upper limb length has a mean positive correlation r = 0.55 for 1 RM and 12 RM. The influence of anthropometry on the critical phase of motion has not been confirmed. Only the correlation between...

Backgroud: Climacteric is defined as the phase comprising the transition between reproductive and non-reproductive life of women. Besides vasomotor symptoms, mood swings and sleep at this time, women tend to gain more weight and modify the pattern of body fat distribution. It is known that adipokines released by adipose tissue, which have different actions as a function of immune, cardiovascular, metabolic and endocrine function may contribute to the development of comorbidities, such as atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Other molecules are involved in metabolic processes such as cell adhesion molecules (CAM), which have been studied as predictors of cardiovascular events. It is known that in postmenopausal women, an inverse relationship between exercise practiced regularly and the main causes of comorbidities. Objectives: To analyze the association between climacteric vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and adiponectin, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), intercellular adhesion molecule 1(ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), lipid profile and nutritional status. Methods: This was a cross sectional study with 102 peri- and postmenopausal women from 40 and 65 years old that evaluated VMS, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage (BF%), adiponectin, PAI-1, ICAM-1 e VCAM-1, lipid profile, and glycemia. Results: Mean age 53.8 (± 5.4) years, median 48 (10.96) months from the last menstrual period. Overweight was observed in 41.2% of women, very high cardiovascular risk (WC ≥ 88 cm) in 50.0%, and BF% (mean ± standard deviation) was 33.3 ± 5.3%. Mean values were 22.5 (± 11.8) ng/dL for adiponectin, 284.9 (± 134.1) ng/dL for PAI-1, 457.0 (± 210.6) ng/dL for ICAM-1, 202.0 (± 61.3) ng/dL for VCAM-1, 214.4 (±42.3) mg/dL for total cholesterol, 51.0 (± 2.8) mg/dL for high-density level cholesterol (HDL-c), 138.8 (± 2.2) mg/dL for lowdensity level cholesterol (LDL-c), and 129.4 (± 67.8) mg/dL for triglycerides. 76 (74.5%) had hot flashes, 45 (44.1%) mild to moderate depression according Beck’s score, and 79 (77.5%) had insomnia according Pisttburg’s score (PSQI). 73 (71.6%) were classified as active according physical activity’s (IPAQ) score. No significant relationship was observed between adipokine or CAM levels and VMS. Adiponectin was negatively inversely associated with BMI. There was a statistically significant inverse correlation between age and hot flash intensity. Conclusions: VMS intensity was inversely related with age, and VMS were not associated with adiponectin, PAI- 1, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Changes in several study parameters, such as presence of overweight/obesity, increased WC and BF%, and hypercholesterolemia contribute to a higher risk for cardiovascular disease in this sample of peri and postmenopausal women, although we found no correlation between hot flashes and adipokines or adhesion molecules.

January 2009 (has links)
However, more longitudinal studies are needed to assess the nutritional status of a particular population group over time to improve the reliability of the results. Therefore, the objective of this study is to use four crosssectional studies and one longitudinal study to assess the nutritional status over time of first- to fourth-graders attending public elementary schools in the city of Piracicaba, SP, from 2003 to 2006. A total of 16068 assessments of 9683 schoolchildren of 12 schools located in the five administrative regions of Piracicaba were made during this period, always in the second semester of each year. These groups of schoolchildren assessed on a yearly basis were called cross-sectional groups. Another group of schoolchildren (n=347) was followed from first to fourth grades during the same period the cross-sectional studies were done. They were called longitudinal group. The following data were collected: name, gender, birth date, grade, class, weight and height. The data were processed by the software Epi-info using the NCHS/CDC - National Center for Health Statistics / Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - 2000 population as reference and expressed as z-scores (Z) and percentiles (P) of the indicators height-for-age (H/A), weight-for-age (W/A), and body mass index-forage (BMI/A). The nutritional status was classified according to the cutoff points given by the NCHS/CDC, World Health Organization (WHO) and that used by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The schoolchildren were grouped by age, year of assessment and region for the cross-sectional assessment and grouped by age (which coincides with the year of assessment) for the longitudinal assessment. Changes in the nutritional status of these schoolchildren were characterized by reducing... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

January 2006 (has links)
Most of posture changes easily detected in obese people are not exclusive from each other, but they happen in obese people more often caused by big effort and exaggeration of body mass and the increase of mechanical and regional needs. It was a transverse study, with 389 school children and adolescents, age ranging from 6 to 16 years old, both sexes, one group from a private school and two others from public schools, coming from the urban area of Penápolis-SP, registered and studying in elementary levels in the year of 2004, morning period. The major aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of overweight and obesity on muscle and bone system of these children. In order , there was measured height and body mass to determinate BMI, foot prints, measurements of digital images using computerized biophotogrammetry and also a questionnaire about economic status. It was evaluated 389 students, 220 (56,5%) females and 169 (43,5%) males. The prevalence of overweight was 14,91% and obesity 15,68%. In males there was a bigger proportion of obese students (21,42%) than overweight ones (10,11%).The results show a high incidence of obesity and overweight and there is no significant difference between economic status and nutritional status. In relation to longitudinal arch and nutritional status, the right flat foot showed bigger proportion of obesity students. It was observed that different kinds of foot was equally dispensed in the obesity students, while overweight, normal and underweight students obtained a bigger proportion of normal and high arched foot. The left foot showed similar results, except obesity students that obtained bigger proportion of high arched foot. In the quadricipital angle evaluation, the female right lower limb obtained 10.79°...
A seguir as alterações ... The treatment aims to stop viral replication definitively, but when using pegylated interferon and ribavirin some side effects are common, such as weight loss, which can lead to treatment discontinuation. The hypothesis of this study was that the degree of liver fibrosis and the ribavirin doses could have a role on the reductions of anthropometric measures during antiviral treatment. The aim was to assess the relationship between the degree of hepatic impairment, ribavirin doses, age, gender and anthropometric changes in patients with chronic hepatitis C submitted to 24 weeks of treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin. Seventy-six patients were included and their weight, height, triceps skin fold, arm circumference, arm muscle circumference and arm muscle area were measured before and after 24 weeks of treatment. Epidemiological data and liver biopsy findings were obtained from patients' charts. The sample was divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of advanced hepatic fibrosis. The values observed in each group were compared by paired t test or Wilcoxon test. Then, the anthropometric changes throughout the antiviral treatment by a model aimed to measure the role of fibrosis degree, age, sex and ribavirin doses on the anthropometric changes, using statistical m...
