Preliminary Analysis of a Survey Evaluating Applied Behavior Analysts' Knowledge and Use of Evidence-Based Practices

Fox, James J., Little, Mary Annette, King, Seth 27 May 2017 (has links)
This poster presents development and pilot-testing of an electronic survey evaluating behavior analysts perceptions and use of Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs). Demographic information, ratings of quality indicators (Horner et al 2005) in evaluating and choosing behavior interventions, and resources identifying EBPs were assessed. Fourteen graduate trainees in a behavior analysis certification program were participants. Test-retest intra-rater agreement was assessed approximately 2 weeks apart and varied considerably across survey items. Overall exact agreement was 71 % while agreement within 1 rating point was 91 %. The most highly rated quality indicators were clear descriptions of baseline and intervention conditions, measures of inter-observer agreement, and repeated measures of target behaviors. Lowest rated were group experimental designs, statistical analyses, and numbers of participants. Surprisingly, multiple studies with 20+ participants, integrated intervention packages, and written intervention manuals were not as highly rated. Most frequently reported EBP sources were professional society websites, university courses, practitioner journals, and professional peer-reviewed journals. Least frequently reported were webinars by private entities, non-peer-reviewed journals, and government websites (e.g., What Works Clearing House). Participants identified time constraints, difficulty finding research relevant to their current situation and technical rather than practical nature of research as impediments to keeping current with EBPs

Laboratório de gestão: jogo de empresas com pesquisa para a formação crítica em administração / Management laboratory: business game and research for critical thinking

Silva, Marco Antônio 14 June 2013 (has links)
One of the challenges faced by Business Administration Schools has been to prepare professionals to become creative decision makers and critical thinkers in a rapidly changing business environment. Toward this purpose it was created in SIMULAB, a research group at the School of Economics, Administration and Accounting, University of São Paulo - FEA/USP/SP, the Management Laboratory: a teaching, learning and research environment based on three conceptual pillars: organizational simulator, business game and applied research. The aim of this study was to examine how the activities developed in the Management Laboratory provide a critical education for Business Administration according to the literature on management education, critical thinking, teacher training, and teaching and learning strategies. It was conducted a qualitative and interpretative single case study, based on the following primary sources of evidences: an in depth interview with Professor Antonio Carlos Aidar Sauaia, the Management Laboratory creator; a survey applied to SIMULAB professors; the direct classroom observation, and the examination of scientific papers produced by Business Administration undergraduate students in the Management Laboratory at FEA/USP/SP. The content analysis produced evidences that business game combined with applied research as experiential activities developed students critical thinking abilities. For example: a critique of Porter\'s model (addition of the Government as the sixth force in the five forces model); besides, the extended application of Goldratt\'s Constraint Theory, under a multifunctional perspective, beyond the functional area of Production. As a conclusion higher education institutions stakeholders as directors and coordinators, could be engaged in order to build a new teaching and learning culture, in addition to professors\' training programs for effective conduction of Management Laboratory.

Comprehensive school reform in the wake of No Child Left Behind: Teacher perceptions in Dodgeland

Haag, Allyson Regina 01 June 2007 (has links)
This thesis is an analysis of teacher perceptions of the implementation of their school's comprehensive school reform, and the George W. Bush administration's federal educational policy, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Data were collected by a research team as a part of the National Longitudinal Evaluation of Comprehensive School Reform (NLECSR), a project under the direction of the American Institutes for Research (AIR). The thesis is a supplemental qualitative analysis by the author who was part of the NLECSR research team from 2004 through 2005. The NLECSR had a quantitative component (called the Core Study) consisting of a large-scale national survey, and a qualitative component (called the Focus Study) consisting of interviews and observations in a smaller subset of schools in five urban districts in the central and eastern United States. AIR was primarily responsible for the quantitative study while researchers at USF were responsible for the qualitative work. This thesis exploited a major strength of the Focus Study, which made classrooms within schools the unit of analysis. This thesis analyzed data from three schools from one of the five Focus Study districts. Three research questions predominate: First, what do teachers who are implementing CSR say about how NCLB impacts their work? Second, what do teachers' responses reveal about how well NCLB as a policy aligns or misaligns with implementing CSR? Third, where might these perceived policy conflicts lie? Thematic analysis revealed perceived competing pressures in the development of social capital, or the collective commitment, relational trust and communications that foster productive or supportive exchanges between teachers, students and other school stakeholders. I found that the NCLB mandates and sanctions were perceived by teachers as unfair, at odds with the goals of reform and potentially detrimental to some of the gains won through implementing CSR, such as social capital.

Story-Selling: The Persuasive Effects of Using Stories in University Recruitment

Burns, Michael Edward January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the persuasive effects personal stories have on the university recruitment process. Specifically, this study explored how Fisher's (1984) concepts of narrative probability and fidelity influenced Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior model using a four-staged quasi-experimental study. Jablin's (1982) anticipatory socialization phase of organizational assimilation theory acted as a context for this applied dissertation. This study evolved over four stages while working with the North Dakota State University Office of Admission. The first stage provided qualitative data exploring students' opinions of using story-based recruitment material. Focus groups also revealed what types of stories would be helpful for prospective students during the college admission process. Stage two developed and tested the narrative probability and fidelity scales based on Fisher's (1984) narrative paradigm. These newly created scales were used to determine the level of narrative probability and narrative fidelity in each of the experimental conditions. Stage three consisted of the creation and testing of the recruitment videos used in each experimental condition. The final stage tested the story-based recruitment and control videos on prospective students visiting North Dakota State University. The results of this dissertation were obtained using a series of ANOVAs, regression analyses, and path model testing techniques. Overall, the results suggested that high levels of narrative probability and narrative fidelity do positively influence prospective students' attitudes toward choosing a university and have a less powerful, but still positive, influence on their subjective norms beliefs and perceived behavioral control of choosing a university. The theory of planned behavior model was also supported by this data. The results of each stage of this study produced theoretical and practical implications. This dissertation concludes with a discussion of the results, implications, limitations, and future research opportunities.

Llauce Chapoñan, Bernardo January 2023 (has links)
In the latest rainfall in our Lambayeque department, specifically in the Mórrope district, we were alarmed, even more so in the Yaku phenomenon, registered this year. Faced with this, this research aimed to improve the resistance of adobe to the effects of rains and floods, using the Yeso and the Poña of Algarrobo that is currently incinerated. For this, first the properties and composition of the materials and stabilizers were known; subsequently, a standard sample of adobe was obtained; after that, the optimal percentages were obtained for Yeso and Poña of Algarrobo and finally, the data was processed and analyzed to quantify the results. Among our results, we obtained that by adding 6% Poña de Algarrobo and 9% Yeso to the standard adobe, the resistance to compression increases by 59.54%, the traction by 15.85%, the bending by 15.69%, the compression of the wall by 28.40 %, diagonal wall traction in 26.09%, the traction of mortar by 60.00%, erosion in 58.05%, suction reduced partial disintegration, immersion reduced total disintegration and in simulated flooding increased resistance to absorption and capillarity. Therefore, it has been concluded that incorporating 6% Poña de Algarrobo and 9% Yeso to traditional adobe increases its physical and mechanical properties, increasing its resistance to water.

Neoliberalism in Higher Education?: A Case Study of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research

Via, Sandra Elizabeth 01 June 2007 (has links)
According to David Harvey, neoliberal ideology has emerged as the current hegemonic economic discourse. Therefore, Harvey contends that neoliberalism has permeated every aspect of society, including institutions of higher education. However, the role of neoliberal ideology is perceived as a form of common sense, and thus proponents of neoliberal policies often do not realize that the programs and policies that they are implementing are neoliberal. Furthermore, Harvey argues that another aspect of neoliberalism is its propensity to exclude or ignore society. This thesis explores the relationship between neoliberal ideology and higher education, as well as the tendency of neoliberalism to depict universities and other forms of higher education as catalysts for economic development. In order to examine this relationship, this thesis examines an institution of higher education located in Southside Virginia, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR). More specifically, this thesis takes an in depth look of the academic, research, and outreach/community programs offered by IALR. Moreover, this thesis explains how some of IALR's programs fit within a neoliberal framework and others do not, and how these programs are characterized as mechanisms of economic revitalization in Southside Virginia. Finally, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which IALR has embraced aspects of neoliberal ideology while resisting neoliberalism's tendencies to exclude the community from decision-making processes, yet also inculcate neoliberal ideology into the community's perceptions of economic development and higher education. / Master of Arts

Santamaria Tullume, Gustavo Adolfo January 2021 (has links)
In the present investigation a strategic plan is made to a family business, an internal and external analysis, to see the reality of it. There are several strategic plan models, which are based on the pioneer model that gave rise to the Harvard Business School Design School in 1965, all very similar in order to help the researcher with a sequence of logical activities, to develop a consistent process for any organization that seeks to project itself to a better future. The research was of quantitative approach with qualitative support since it was based on the subjectivity of the interviewee and researcher and on the cost measurements of the strategies, it was of applied type since the theory formulated by (Ward, 2006) was applied and applied to the reality, descriptive level because the stages of the strategic plan and the non-experimental design are described since the manipulation of variables - transversal was not performed since it is determined in a certain period of time and the techniques used is the interview that was based on internal analysis and bibliographic research, which reviewed books and documents. The results of the investigation were the following strategies, "Develop a fast care plan for important dates, supported by all family members", "Renew continuously the infrastructure of the premises, before important dates of celebration", "Invest in technology that develops efficiency in the processes of the product ”and finally“ Creation of new innovative products, taking advantage of equal prices ”, specific strategies required for a series of means for its implementation such as adequate policies, necessary resources and people responsible for the processes In conclusion, the strategic plan directly benefited the company because it shaped a strategic direction and therefore the improvement of management by making sound decisions for the well-being of the organization.
