This dissertation aims at investigating to which extent the existence of the computer
lab of the Programa Nacional de Informática na Educação might facilitate the
inclusion of Internet in English classes at the investigated public school. The
participants of our research were the 7th graders of a public school in a town located
in the region of the Triângulo Mineiro . Our dissertation is an ethnographic research
which uses the perspective of the qualitative paradigm, and proposes to verify
whether the inclusion of technology seen in the above mentioned laboratory, through
the use of the website kidlink, is able to stimulate the participants in interactions via
e-mail with foreign keypals, to develop possibilities of writing in the target language.
We take as our theoretical reference the discussions about intercultural interactions
via e-mail in the vision of Yu and Yu (2002), the institutional documents Parâmetros
Curriculares Nacionais de Língua Estrangeira para o Ensino Fundamental and
Proposta Curricular de Inglês da Educação Básica de Minas Gerais , and the works
of Almeida Filho (2005), Celani (2003), Freire (2002) and Moita Lopes (1996), among
others. English classes were observed and an initial questionnaire was applied to
both the students and the teacher. After being singled out, the students participated
in activities through the website kidlink and occurrences of e-mail exchange between
the participants and a north-american teacher were recorded and analyzed.
Messages, the researcher field notes and a final questionnaire applied to the
participants were also analyzed. The results indicate that even in a small
environment, limited by institutional and operational difficulties, it is possible to apply
the existing technology as a support to the learning of English, in an inclusive way.
The final considerations suggest that the public school and its teaching staff should
create appropriate conditions to the inclusion of computational technologies and
Internet in English classes, since the activities done with the students signal
evidences that point to the motivational role that the virtual context might play in the
learning of English at the public school, which goes beyond the teaching of reading.
In spite of the fact that we have analyzed only a small sample, and even realizing the
underuse of the computer lab, it is possible to conclude that the exchange of
significant messages via keypals might contribute to the development of writing
production possibilities in the context of English teaching and learning at the public
school.

Previous issue date: 2016-04-08 / This study aims at investigating in what ways the work with the flipped classroom (a
procedure through which students should study specific parts of the course content at home,
through videos, for example, before they are discussed in the classroom) can help English as a
foreign language students become more autonomous in their learning process. It also aims at
analyzing the perceptions of the students and the teacher-researcher after they have worked
under the flipped classroom model. This qualitative case study research was carried out at the
Language Center at the Federal University of Goiás. 14 learners, mostly university students,
and the teacher-researcher participated in the research. The data collection instruments were a
questionnaire applied to students before they started working with the flipped classroom, an
interview with the learners which was conducted by the end of the term, three video recorded
classes and the field notes created by the teacher-researcher. The results showed that the
learners displayed various signs of developing autonomy and a high level of cooperation
throughout the classes. Their perceptions regarding the work with the flipped classroom were,
for the most part, positive: many of them said they benefitted from being able to access the
class content beforehand, and other learners stated that they preferred the flipped classes,
since they were more dynamic. Some of the negative perceptions regard the fact that
oftentimes they would forget to watch the videos, since they were not used to working under
this technique. The teacher-researcher also benefitted from the work with the flipped
classroom, mostly because it proved to be challenging and stimulating. In the final thoughts
section, we discuss aspects such as the necessity of the teacher carefully performing an
evaluation of their class before starting the work with the flipped classroom. This should be
done in order to ensure all students have access to the materials and that they know what is
expected from them in this way of having classes, which is probably new to them.
A professorapesquisadora

Previous issue date: 2015-07-31 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This research was motivated by my perception of the difficulties that students from a language school face when it comes to writing the narrative genre, specifically telling short stories (which is mandatory in some international exams). Those are important questions, as we know that the responsibility for putting the learning process into a straitjacket is the fact that the focus is on the final result, instead of being on the process. That makes the educational process fixed and non-creative, resulting on the development of students that are not reflexives nor aware of the social activities they engage into. Vygotsky and Engerstöm discussions about the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) are the basis for this study, as well as the concepts of teaching-learning development, mediation in social contexts and critical collaboration in which language plays a fundamental role as a cultural artifact. In general, this research aimed to critically comprehend the contexts created on the classroom of a language school for the production of fictional narratives in English language. The specific targets were: 1) critically understand the comprehension of the students about the contemplated genre; 2) provide conditions for the students so they could appropriate the fictional narrative genre through social activities; 3) analyze the written production of students to critically verify if there was any transformation, and what they were. Eight pre-intermediate students, between the ages of 11 and 13 years old, from a school in São Paulo city took part in the research. Their production, audio recordings and classes description generate the data used in the analysis. They aimed to check how students were gripping to the learning of the genre, and also the relations established in the classroom. The results demonstrated that the pattern of language used was unidirectional and the relationships were mostly I-R-E (initiated by the teacher, responded by the students, and evaluated by the teacher). Nevertheless, at the end of the research, the pattern changes a bit for a more collaborative relationship among the students and the teacher, which made it possible for students to better understand the concepts of the narrative worked during the semester. Mostly, it served well for this teacher-researcher who, for the first time, evaluated her actions in the classroom / Esta pesquisa foi motivada por minha percepção da dificuldade dos alunos de uma escola de idiomas em dominarem a escrita do gênero narrativa de ficção, especificamente contar histórias (produção requerida em exame internacional).

Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This research aims at investigating the local-global knowledge which emerges from the
discoursive practices of two teachers of English who have just started the course
Reflection on Action: the teacher of English learning and teaching and two other ones
who have already finished the same course. Our theoretical construct is based on
Contemporary Applied Linguistics on the perspective of Moita Lopes (2006a; 2006b;
2002); Kumaravadivelu (2006) and Celani (2005). This study is grounded on the
binominal local-global knowledge (Canagarajah, 2005); on the official documents that
guide the practice of teachers of English in the Brazilian educational context (São Paulo,
2008; Brasil, 2002; 2000; 1998) and on Vygotsky s Sociocultural and Historical Theory
of teaching and learning (Vygotsky, 1930/1989; 1934/2001, among others). The
research is conducted by an interpretative methodology (Myers, 1997; Moita Lopes;
1996; Erickson; 1986, among others) and the data has been collected through two
instruments: a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview (Rizzini, Castro and Sartor,
1999). For analyzing and interpreting the data, three categories of analysis have been
established: the category of thematic content, the observation of how the participants
place their enunciates and deontic modalizations (Bronckart, 1997/1999). The study
concentrates on three areas of analysis (a) senses, meanings and aims of teachinglearning
English in the educational context; (2) planning and criteria for curriculum
content selection; and (3) pedagogical practices. The results showed that the teachers
who were taking the first module of the course Reflection on Action presented a
discourse strongly supported by local knowledge, but heading to a dialogue with a
global one. On the other hand, the teachers who have already finished the course
achieved more autonomy to reflect about the global knowledge in their relationship to
local one to promote the teaching-learning English for specific contexts / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar os saberes locais-globais que emergem nas
e aprendizagem sócio-histórico-cultural (Vygotsky, 1930/1989; 1934/2001; 1934/2003;
dentre outros).
utilizadas três categorias: conteúdo temático, observação do posicionamento
contextos locais

Previous issue date: 2010-01-28 / This research aims at: (1) identifying the needs, wants and preferences of EJA students, as
far as learning English is concerned; and (2) describing and interpreting the phenomenon of
learning English from the perspective of 1st term of EJA.
The theoretical foundation of the current study is based on Parâmetros Curriculares
Nacionais Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 2002b), Proposta Curricular para a Educação de
Jovens e Adultos (Brasil, 2002a), Diretrizes Curriculares para a Educação de Jovens e
Adultos (Brasil, 2000b) among other official documents which rule such an educational
segment. In addition, this study is also grounded on criteria for needs analysis, considering
the perceptions suggested by Hutchinson and Waters (1987), Berwick (1989) and Dudley-
Evans and St John (1998).
The hermeneutic-phenomenological approach (Ricoeur, 1986/2002; van Manen, 1990;
Freire, 2006, 2007) was the orientation adopted for describing and interpreting the learning of
English from the perspective of 1st term EJA students as a human experience phenomenon.
The research context was a public school in which, through three questionnaires, the
opinions of 52 first-tem students were captured and interpreted.
The results of this study indicate that the focused students need English for work-related
purposes, for using computers or operating machines. In daily life, they also need this foreign
language to understand ads, purchase products or use computers. As for expectations, they
want to use English for traveling; understanding songs, movies; communicating; and finding
better job opportunities. The results also reveal that: (1) they prefer learning English by
learning vocabulary; (2) they would like to have listening-comprehension activities; and (3)
they would not like to perform tasks related to writing. Furthermore, the results reveal that
learning English from the perspective of EJA students, as a phenomenon of human
experience, is structured in seven themes: knowledge, opportunity, difficulty, performance,
lack, utility, motivation, and teacher. The results of this study may provide reference for
teachers and researchers to comprehend, adapt, adjust and select materials for a variety of
(Brasil, 2002a); nos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 2002b);
(1987), Berwick (1989) e Dudley-Evans e St John (1998).
entender anúncios, adquirir produtos ou utilizar o computador.

Previous issue date: 2010-05-27 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This research aimed at investigating how a State School English teacher understands the material
prescribed by the São Paulo State Educational Department and implements it in the classroom.
This is a study whose support are the concepts of prescribed and implemented work by Amigues
(2004) and Souza-e-Silva (2004) among others; the official documents published by the Federal
and State educational departments to guide the teachers practices (São Paulo, 2008; Brasil,
1998); the main teaching-learning theories and language studies which focus on Vygotsky s
studies (1934/2000;1987/1998;2001); the reflective practices (Freire, 1996; Giroux, 1997;
Smyth, 1992). The research methodology used was the critical collaborative research
(Magalhães, 2007), and data was collected by means of video recordings of classes and audio
recordings of reflective sessions. For data analysis and interpretation, the categories employed
were those of prescribed and implemented work (Souza-e-Silva, 2004) for classroom actions, as
well as the quality of interactions (Marcuschi, 2008) and reflective actions (Smyth, 1992;
Liberali, 2004; 2008). Results obtained after analysis reveal that the teacher-participant
renormalizes the prescriptions by developing them with the support of her professional
experience. The research also reveals that despite the attempts by the teacher-researcher to
introduce a challenge to the incoherence presented in the work, so as to allow for changes in the
teacher-participant s practices to take place, the former s questions were not as strong as they
ought to have been to provoke the latter s reflections / Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo investigar como uma professora de inglês da rede pública

estudo

participants to the English language and its teaching-learning, as well as identifying and
analyzing the participants’ perceptions of teaching English as a carrier. This research
was held during the first semester of 2010, at Universidade Federal do Tocantins, and
had the participation of two student-teachers at their last term at Letras Portuguese-
English course. A qualitative approach was adopted to collect and to analyze the data in
this case study. The data were obtained by means of a questionnaires, interviews,
observation, field notes, audio and video recording and written tasks done by the
participants. The data were then analyzed under the conceptions of socio-historicalcultural
theory and Critical Applied Linguistics. Amongst the conclusions found, we
observed that the participants present varied and many times contradictory conceptions,
postures and attitudes towards their perceptions of the English language, its teachinglearning
and what it means to be an English teacher nowadays. For the studentsteachers,
the English language can assume different meanings, with emphasis on those
regarding its relations with the market, globalization and cultural imperialism. The role
English can assume as a social inclusion or exclusion factor was also highlighted by the
participants. Another conclusion we arrived at concerns the meanings attributed to
teaching English as a carrier and the choice for this profession, which is perceived by
the participants as a complex and tiresome carrier, with low social and financial
acknowledgement. However, on the other hand, it was also pinpointed that it is a very
important profession for the construction of a fairer and more equalitarian society.

Nesta pesquisa narrativa (CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 2000, 2011, 2015;
Meus alunos do sexto ano (o Everton, a
investigar narrativamente as histórias vividas e narradas, eu as recontei e compreendi
liberdade, singularidade, responsabilidade e protagonismo, sempre considerando o
aspecto ético-relacional da pesquisa narrativa (CLANDININ, 2013). (2) Nós nos
tornamos autores quando deixamos nossa assinatura (MELLO, 2012a; CLANDININ;
CONNELLY, 2000, 2011, 2015) na paisagem do conhecimento profissional,
expressando nosso conhecimento prático pessoal (CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 1995).
In this narrative inquiry (CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 2000, 2011, 2015; CLANDININ,
2013), I narratively inquired into the experiences of authorship of the students I lived
alongside in our English classes at a public school in Uberlândia - MG. Narrative
inquiry considers the narrative commonplaces of temporality, sociality, and place as
part of the three-dimensional inquiry space, a research space shaped in the relationships
of the participants and the researcher. This methodology is based on a Deweyan
ontology of experience. The grade six students Everton, Kamilly Vitória, Lowise, and
Manoela, and Larissa (Lowise's mother), tell how they lived their experiences of
authorship at school, and I tell my experiences of authoring my practice and the
development of my signature as a teacher. Among the contributions to the area of
Applied Linguistics, I consider, mainly, the discussions about the writing process in
English, about the process of elaboration and creation of materials by language teachers,
about the forms of assessment in English classes in public schools, and the possibilities
of working with genres to teach and learn English. After inquiring into the stories we
lived and told, I retold them and understood that the experiences of authorship that
Everton, Kamilly Vitória, Manoela, Lowise, Larissa, and I lived were possible because
we shared authority (OYLER, 1996) in English classes. The findings for this research
are as follows: (1) We had narrative authority (OLSON, 1995) to live stories of
freedom, singularity, responsibility and protagonism, always considering the ethicalrelational
aspect of narrative inquiry (CLANDININ, 2013). (2) We become authors
when we leave our signature (MELLO, 2012a, CLANDININ, CONNELLY, 2000,
2011, 2015) on the professional knowledge landscape of schools, expressing our
personal practical knowledge (CLANDININ, CONNELLY, 1995). (3) We did this
through the stories we told and texts we produced in English classes, built in and by the
experiences lived in the knowledge communities (CRAIG, 1995; OLSON, CRAIG,
2001, 2002) we created. / Tese (Doutorado)

Previous issue date: 2006-10-20 / This dissertation aims at investigating the rhythmical and intonation aspects of the
English production by a fluent speaker of this language whose mother language is
Portuguese, having as a reference the production of a native speaker of English, and
thus, to inspect how and in which level the phonological-phonetic processes related
to sounds, rhythm and intonation of the target language are transferred to the
mother language prosody. The relation between the sound production and the
prosody can be seen in the connected speech provided by sound modifications in
the juncture between words, in the use of pauses, assimilation, reduction and
elimination of sounds, among others. The corpus, comprised of 40 sentences from
the film Dozen by the Cheaper was used to get closer to a connected speech
production. The sentences were typed in individual cards and read six times by
each subject, both female, between 25 and 30 years old, and the cards were shuffled
before each repetition. The six reading recordings were done at PUC-SP s Radio
and TV studio. The data analysis was provided by the Acoustic Phonetic using
duration measures (time a sound takes to be produced) and the variation of the
fundamental frequency (tone variation during the speech) based on the waveform
ranged to the wide-band spectrograms, extracted from the speech signal digitalized
by an acoustic analysis program. Some sentences from the corpus were chosen to
the analysis, and consonantal and vowel segments were measured. Duration
measures and f0 charts were made in order to observe how much the subjects got
closer or farther to the sound production, and to the English rhythm and intonation
due to the Brazilian Portuguese interference. The final results point that: (1) the
sound production, English rhythm and intonation are related to the connected
speech, the mother language (in this case, the Brazilian Portuguese) interfere in the
sound production and English prosody, but, an important aspect is that this
interference is not categorical, it can occur or not and, if it occurs, it must be done
in different levels; and (3) the Acoustic Phonetic provides some advantages to the
teaching and learning of a foreign language rhythm and intonation, in so far as the
different production aspects can be observed, making possible that the Brazilian
English teacher makes clear the differences between the mother language and the
target one to the students, differences that can or can t be noticed or produced by
corpus composto por 40 sentenças, retiradas do script do filme Dozen by the
A gravação
(neste trabalho, o português brasileiro) na produção de sons e prosódia do inglês;
