La thèse vise à réfléchir à la médiatisation d'images urbaines à partir de revues d'architecture et d'urbanisme. Il s'agit d'images dans le sens propre du terme (des dessins et des photographies), ainsi que dans le sens de la représentation, de l'imaginaire. L'objet en question est l'imagerie du Brésil en circulation entre l'Amérique du Sud, l'Amérique du Nord et l'Europe entre 1930 et 1960. Cet objet concerne les divers espaces éditoriaux qui ont pu recevoir, diffuser, commenter ces images, tout comme les acteurs et les mécanismes dans lesquels ils sont inscrits, qu'ils créent et nourrissent. Ce que nous avons appelé la fabrique éditoriale. Nous nous interrogeons sur la relation entre les représentations créées et le processus de sélection et de mise en circulations de ces images, à partir d'un réseau de relations qui croisent la presse spécialisée et celle généraliste, ainsi que le cinéma. Pour répondre à ce propos, nous traçons les diverses trajectoires des photographies et des récits publiés, à partir de différents passeurs et médiateurs qui participent à cette circulation internationale. Puis nous analysons les différentes formes dont les images sont présentées dans les pages des revues, avant de proposer une lecture des représentations médiatisées / The dissertation aims to reflect on the media coverage of urban images from architecture and planning journals. There are images in the proper sense of the term (drawings and photographs) as well as in the sense of representation, of imaginary. The topic under scrutiny is the imagery of Brazil in circulation between South America, North America and Europe between 1930 and 1960. It includes the various editorial spaces that were able to receive, distribute, comment on these images, as well as the actors and the mechanisms in which they are enrolled, they create and feed. What we called the editorial production. We question the relationship between the representations created and the selection and circulation of images. To answer this purpose we map the different trajectories of the pictures and the narrative published from differents passeurs and médiateurs participating in this international circulation, then we analyze the different ways in which images are displayed on the pages of magazines before propose a reading of mediated representations

On hallowed ground : the church architecture of the Indiana gas boom

East Central Indiana's Gas Boom began when natural gas was discovered in 1886 and lasted until 1906 when the supply fell too short to meet the demand. The resource brought magnificent wealth to the region, as industries developed in the area and drew thousands of workers. The incredible population growth resulted in a building boom, creating new churches, houses, industrial buildings, and civic buildings. Although the resource ran out and many towns quickly decreased in population, the buildings remained as a testament to the Gas Boom years. Several styles of architecture were popular during this period, and for churches the predominant styles were Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival. Using a sample of Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival churches located across the nation as models, this thesis studies the Gas Boom churches of Alexandria, Elwood, and Hartford City to determine if they represented the national trends in church architecture during this period. / Department of Architecture

L’esprit dialectique qui caractérise la posture intellectuelle d’Aldo Rossi en tant qu’enseignant et architecte, cristallise durant les années 1960, en Italie, une nouvelle approche de l’enseignement de la théorie du projet en architecture. Cherchant à être rationnel tout en intégrant la question de « l’élément subjectif » de l’architecte, au travers de son expérience, la posture intellectuelle de Rossi s’est positionnée en réponse à un contexte politique et universitaire en crise. Dans la continuité des recherches menées sur l’épistémologie et la pédagogie de l’architecture ainsi que sur son ouverture réflexive à d’autres champs disciplinaires, Rossi tente de construire un essai théorique à la Fabrique du projet (la Città analoga). Il y questionne la pensée analogique face aux études typologiques en cherchant à esquisser une méthode didactique fonctionnant par étapes. Face à la difficulté de rationaliser « l’élément subjectif », Rossi, prolonge son essai sur la Fabrique du projet, au travers de ses propres œuvres. / The dialectical spirit which characterizes Aldo Rossi's intellectual disposition as a teacher and architect practitioner, crystallized during the 1960s, in Italy, a new approach to the teaching of the theory of the project in architecture. Trying to be rational while integrating the question of " the subjective element " of the architect, through his experience, the intellectual posture of Rossi was positioned in response to a political and university crisis. In the continuity of the researches led by the epistemology and the pedagogy of architecture and on his reflexive openness to other disciplinary fields, Rossi tries to build a theoretical essay to the Fabric of the project (Città analoga). He questions the analogical thought in front of the typological studies and tries to sketch a didactic method step by step. Facing the difficulty of rationalising " the subjective element ", Rossi, extends his essay on the Factory of the project, through his own works.

The study extends through the documentation and cataloguing of his entire production between the years 1950 and 1980, and the analysis of the most significant examples between 1950 and 1960 decades. Initially it outlines the historical path of modernity, in witch the language of modern architecture develops as a response to the social and political demands of the period. By taking this route as a background context, the study of the architect's legacy unfolds at one hand by the exposure of his biography from childhood to his formal professional influences in buildings: Ministério da Educação e Cultura; Conjunto Residencial Parque Guinle; Conjunto Residencial Prefeito Mendes de Morais, Pedregulho e a Estação de Hidroaviões. On the other hand, the split is based on the use of the formal elements of the architecture developed at the Faculdade Nacional de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Brasil, so called “arquitetura carioca” and also on the pioneer buildings of modern Brazilian architecture, as were prepared and articulated from partnerships between Lúcio Costa, Gregori Warchavchik, Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Reidy and Jorge Moreira. It also identifies the formal and poetic components of the modern language of the buildings, the significant examples of the architect's work and highlights the connections and characteristic features of Modern Brazilian architecture belonging to the school of Rio de Janeiro. The work also formulates the question about the possible identity in the architect´s production reflecting the symbolic formation of Goiania´s landscape as a place of modern memory, especially for its leading role in the city's inclusion in the scenario of modern architecture in Brazil. Lastly, as a final consideration, there is a brief reflection on modern architecture as a relevant possibility of this memory to its preservation. / Esta dissertação estuda a presença da obra arquitetônica de Eurico Calixto de Godoi na formação da arquitetura moderna em Goiânia através dos vínculos históricos que a paisagem urbana mantém com o processo formativo da história da arquitetura moderna brasileira. Estende-se à documentação e catalogação do conjunto de sua produção entre os anos de 1950 e 1980 e à análise dos exemplares mais significativos das décadas de 1950 e 1960. Inicialmente, delineia o percurso histórico da modernidade em que se desenvolve a linguagem da arquitetura moderna como resposta às demandas sociais e políticas do período e, nesse percurso, estuda o legado do arquiteto, que se desdobra, por um lado, na exposição de sua biografia desde a infância até as influências que marcaram sua formação através dos conceitos formais contidos nos edifícios: Ministério da Educação e Cultura; Conjunto Residencial Parque Guinle; Conjunto Residencial Pedregulho (Prefeito Mendes de Morais) e Estação de Hidroaviões. De outro lado, avalia o desdobramento que ocorre em seus projetos a partir da compreensão e da materialização dos elementos formais e do léxico da arquitetura carioca desenvolvidos na Faculdade Nacional de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Brasil e nos edifícios pioneiros da arquitetura moderna brasileira, tal como foram elaborados e articulados a partir das parcerias de: Lúcio Costa, Gregori Warchavchik, Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Reidy e Jorge Moreira.
