FICCIONES DE PATAGONIA: LA CONSTRUCCION DEL SUR EN LA NARRATIVA ARGENTINA Y CHILENA

Casini, Silvia E. 01 January 2005 (has links)
Contemporary novels about Patagonia rely on foundational texts to caricature the region as a sterile, empty, and isolated. This stereotype was the impetus for this study. Through literary texts concerning Patagonia, the author joins the theoretical debate regarding the relationship between marginal and hegemonic cultures. A close analysis of writings on Patagonia reveals that the image of Patagonian space varies considerably depending on the perspective of the narrator, character, or writer. This dissertation analyzes the construction of Patagonian space in six contemporary novels by Chilean and Argentinean writers. It is divided into two sections. The first section discusses novels written about Patagonia by non-Patagonians. These works depend on and repeat the image of Patagonia found in certain foundational texts. The texts analyzed in this section include Patagonia Express, by Luis Seplveda, Final de novela en Patagonia, by Mempo Giardinelli, and La tierra del fuego, by Sylvia Iparraguirre. By contrast, the second part of the dissertation analyzes novels by Patagonian writers. Rather than the familiar stereotypes of Patagonia, these works paint a vibrant picture of the social, economic, cultural, and human realities of Patagonia. The texts of this section include the short stories Caminos y rastrilladas borrosas and Memorias de un carrero patagnico, by Asencio Abeijn and Pap botas altas (a collection of short stories), by David Aracena as well as the novel El corazn a contraluz, by Patricio Manns. The theoretical framework for this dissertation derives from Humanistic Geography an emphasis on the social awareness. Particularly special attention is paid to the ways in which environment shapes human interactions. Within that framework, the use of Cultural Landscape theory serves to illustrate how the social and physical environment shapes the perception of space in Patagonian literature. The ideas of the geographers Edward Soja, Yi-Fu Tuan, Lester Rowntree, Paul Adams, Steven Hoelscher, Karen Till and Edward Casey are used in this dissertation. In addition, the ideas of the literary scholars Arturo Roig, Michael Keith and Steve Pile contributed greatly towards the conclusion that critics must remain constantly aware of how location shapes the perspectives of space and discourses of power.

L'histoire dans l'oeuvre d'Andrés Rivera : écriture, réécriture et manipulation / History in Andrés Rivera’s work : writing, rewriting and manipulation

Letourneur, Marina 10 July 2015 (has links)
Argentinean writer Andrés Rivera’s refusal to consider some of his novels as being historical is the starting point of our reflection. In this work we approach the relations between history and fiction, the evolutions of historiography as well as those of the historical novel. The proliferation of historical novels in Latin America in the 1980’s and the 1990’s in particular, and the evolutions in the style and the themes of these novels have brought many critics to look into the phenomenon and to study the characteristics of what they have called the « new historical novel », « the contemporary historical novel » or more « the post-modern historical novel ». The formation of our corpus of novels or short stories by Rivera is based on Seymour Menton’s definition ; a novel is historical if the action takes place in a past that the author did not live. Thus, we chose the fictions in which the diegesis takes place between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which matches key periods of the Argentinean history : the May Revolution (« La revolución es un sueño eterno »), the civil wars and the period of Rosas (« En esta dulcetierra », « El farmer » and « Ese manco Paz »), the rise of the rural middle classes in the 1880's (« El amigo de Baudelaire » and « La sierva »), the 1920's (« Elprofundo Sur » and « Hay que matar »). Through this corpus, we intend to analyze the reading of the Argentinean history offered by Rivera, the notion of history drawn from it and the rewriting of history based on fiction he proposes

A historiografia literária na Argentina e no Brasil. Romantismo(s) e nacionalismo / Literary historiography in Argentina and Brazil: Romanticism and national

Molina, Diego Alejandro 01 June 2011 (has links)
Brazilian literatura has been taken aside from literary studies (as academical, critical and historiographical) that try to comprise the so-called Latin American Literature. Based on a comparison between Argentinean and Brazilian historiographical literary production of romantic writers, this research had as object to make a direct relation between the discursive processe elaborated by the literate elites of each country while creating (inventing) emerging Nations-Satates. Therefore, we intend to emphasize the similarities of the processes without exhaust or forcing comparisons. The project considers also the possibility of highlighting some problematic aspects of the so-called current national literatures. In this regard, a corpus of written literary historiography of both countries will be analyzed in the historiographical production context of Latin America, particulary, and Occident, in general, during the 19th century. Ideas of romanticism, nationalism, and literary and liberal historiography configure the backdrop in wich the project is inscribed.

A l'affût des variations infinies du chaos : approche de l'oeuve de Rodrigo Fresán / On the lookout for the infinite variations of chaos : approaching the work of Rodrigo Fresán

Bargiel, Ewa 12 December 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine and interpret the sophisticated composition of Rodrigo Fresán’s “house of books” or “intertextual series”. Our research will demonstrate that the nine books of the Argentinean writer, in spite of their different generic classifications and their significant thematic diversity, form a coherent whole and they cannot be therefore analyzed separately. The continuity, the logic and, most importantly, the systematic nature of this literary project, that unites all the books of the author in an original and fractal intertextual series “in progress”, will be showed. Considering the fact that this work is characterized by a generic hybridity and a tension between the unification and discontinuity techniques, the processes of literary integration and atomization utilized in the integrated story collections and in the novels of the author will be presented. Then, a repetition and variation principle will be investigated as a main construction strategy of this continuum. Many fields of application of the repetition/variation mechanisms on various levels of the series will be explored. Our study will be concentrated mostly on the narrative structures, the metafictional dimension, the generic hybridity and the extraliterary models of the Fresán’s books, that is, his musical, pictorial, photographic, film, scientific and religious inspirations.

Based on true stories : representing the self and the other in Latin American documentary narratives

Chávez Díaz, Liliana Guadalupe January 2017 (has links)
This doctoral thesis studies the relationship between journalism and literature in contexts in which freedom of speech is at risk. It takes as primary sources a variety of nonfiction, crónicas, literary journalism and testimonial novels published by Latin American authors in Spanish, from the 1950s to the 2000s. I propose the concept ‘documentary narratives’ to refer to all literary modes of discourse which are related, in diverse degrees, to a journalistic representation of reality. My corpus covers a wide range of topics such as social protests, dictatorships, civil wars, natural disaster, crime and migration. While scholars have focused on the rhetoric and history of this kind of narratives, my reading considers the real, face-to-face encounter between the journalist and others. I argue that the representation of these encounters influences the pact with the reader and challenges the notion of truthfulness. I contend that documentary narratives can serve as a tool for the transmission of knowledge and the production of public debate in societies marked by political and social instability. In a world overwhelmed by data production and immersed in violent acts against those to be considered ‘Others’, I argue that storytelling is still an essential form of communication among individuals, classes and cultures. Contrary to the authors’s intentions of documenting others’ lives, I conclude that these stories offer an (interrupted) account of oneself, that is, the account of a contemporary storyteller pursuing a rarely fulfilled desire of getting to know the Other truly. The thesis has two appendices. Appendix 1 showcases archival material that support some of my arguments. Appendix 2 includes the transcripts of the interviews that I conducted with eight Latin American authors: Elena Poniatowska, Leila Guerriero, Cristian Alarcón, Arturo Fontaine, Santiago Roncagliolo, Francisco Goldman, Martín Caparrós, and Juan Villoro.
