The Impact of Expanding Technical Knowledge on the Beginning Industrial Arts TeacherMcCulley, Charles R. 08 1900 (has links)
This study measures technical preparation and job demands among North Texas State University industrial arts graduates teaching in high schools. In addition to data from professional literature and the NTSU Bulletin, questionnaire mailings reveal that most graduates consider themselves qualified although recommending more semester hours of industrial arts for certification. They also affirm the practical value to the teacher of experience in industry. The study recommends narrowing the number of areas in industrial arts preparation and providing a more specialized teacher-training program with greater uniformity of semester hours.

An Investigation of the Role of Industrial Arts in Developing Values in the Areas of Work and LeisureHerrington, Glen D. (Glen Dale) 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of examining the work and leisure values in the industrial society and identifying objectives and methods which develop these two values in the student through industrial arts. Information was gathered from the written works of industrial arts, general education, sociology, and psychology. The study offers a survey of work and leisure values which have evolved in the twentieth century. Also, it presents a historical perspective of industrial arts objectives relating to work and leisure values as they are influenced by the vocational, social, and general education movements. Finally, the study presents specific strategies and tactics which develop work and leisure values through industrial arts.

An Investigation of the Impact of High School Student Fine Arts Course Accumulation on Mathematics Course AchievementMackin Freeman, Daniel 04 June 2019 (has links)
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational achievement is vital to economic competitiveness in the United States and abroad. Despite a concerted effort, the US lags well behind many similarly developed nations. Research suggests that the integration of fine arts education into traditional STEM curriculum (STEAM) boosts academic achievement in STEM subjects and closes gaps between low- and high-socioeconomic status students. Justifications for STEAM programs are based, however, on the unexamined assumption, for one, that fine arts courses instill creative and critical thinking skills that can be transferred to STEM subjects. The present study explores the impact of taking fine arts courses on mathematics achievement in high school. Using the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 and multi-level regression modeling, this study provides evidence that credit accumulation in fine arts courses relates positively to advancing past Algebra II in high school. Additionally, this estimated impact is much greater in magnitude for low-SES students than for their high-SES peers.

The development of a feasible expert system model of bridge truss design for use in fifth-grade technology educationFoster, Patrick January 1993 (has links)
This study was pursued to determine the essential characteristics of a fifth-grade technology education unit of study utilizing an expert system for bridge design. A panel of artificial intelligence experts was consulted to determine the feasibility of using expert system software to model bridge design, and a panel of education experts was consulted to determine the critical components for the study of bridge design in the fifth grade. It was determined that the most important components of such a study were integration with other curricular areas, most notably mathematics and social studies, and the incorporation of cooperative and group work among students. It was also determined that bridge design is a suitable knowledge domain for expert system consultation. Finally, recommendations for further study were stated. / Department of Industry & Technology

Criterion-referenced assessment for modern dance educationMacIntyre, Christine Campbell January 1985 (has links)
This study monitored the conceptualisation, implementation and evaluation of criterion-referenced assessment for Modern Dance by two teachers specifically chosen because they represented the two most usual stances in current teaching i.e. one valuing dance as part of a wider, more general education, the other as a performance art. The Review of Literature investigated the derivation of these differences and identified the kinds of assessment criteria which would be relevant in each context. It then questioned both the timing of the application of the criteria and the benefits and limitations inherent in using a pre-active or re-active model. Lastly it examined the philosophy of criterion-referenced assessment and thereafter formulated the main hypothesis, i. e. "That criterion-referenced assessment is an appropriate and realistic method for Modern Dance in schools". Both the main and sub-hypotheses were tested by the use of Case Study/Collaborative Action research. In this chosen method of investigation the teachers' actions were the primary focus of study while the researcher played a supportive but ancillary role. The study has three sections. The first describes the process experienced by the teachers as they identified their criteria for assessment and put their new strategy into action. It shows the problems which arose and the steps which were taken to resolve them. It gives exemplars of the assessment instruments which were designed and evaluates their use. It highlights the differences in the two approaches to dance and the different competencies required by the teachers if their criterion-referenced strategy was adequately and validly to reflect the important features of their course. In the second section the focus moves from the teachers to the pupils. Given that the pupils have participated in different programmes of dance, the study investigates what criteria the pupils spontaneously use and what criteria they can be taught to use. It does this through the introduction of self-assessment in each course. In this way the pupils' observations and movement analyses were made explicit and through discussion, completing specially prepared leaflets and using video, they were recorded and compared. And finally, the research findings were circulated to a larger number of teachers to find to what extent their concerns and problems had been anticipated by the first two and to discover if they, without extensive support, could also mount a criterion-referenced assessment strategy with an acceptable amount of effort and within a realistic period of time. And given that they could, the final question concerned the evaluations of all those participants i.e. teachers, parents and pupils. Would this extended group similarly endorse the strategy and strengthen the claim that criterion-referenced assessment was a valid and beneficial way of assessing Modern Dance in Schools?

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The present work discusses how the contemporary conceptions of art/education can contribute to the field of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, starting from the theoretical reference of the so-called "philosophers of the difference" - specially Foucault, Deleuze and Guattari (all influenced by Nietzsche's ideas) - and the idea of a bricolage method (which among other characteristics, allows a composition with other methodological perspectives). Intends, therefore, think the artistic workshops of public mental health through the eyes of Art / Contemporary Education. In order to reflect on the range and limits of a work on art/education in the mental health institutions, and also to make a historical study of the links between madness and its conceptions of treatment, and between art and its teaching in a archeological perspective, I researched four mental health units (two CAPSs and two CECCOs) in the city of São Paulo. I tried to map out which are the discourses and practices regarding the artistic activities (focusing on the workshops which work with visual arts) which circulate in the mentioned institutions, understanding that they represent the social imaginary which surrounds the work developed there. From the field observations and interviews with professionals and users of those services, it is possible to say that in general the artistic workshops, though they are very significant spaces of experience for its participants, do not follow the transformations occurred in the artistic universe and in the methodologies of art teaching. In general, the coordinators of those workshops still work (without necessarily being conscious of that) with an idea of art anchored in the classical representations, and making use of a art teaching methodology linked to the freeexpression of the modernists, wrongly interpreted as...
