Oliveira, Bruno Jareta de. January 2015 (has links)
New techniques to capture and produce motion picutres have expanded the creative possibilities in audiovisual, and content producers are facing new challanges in order to tell stories with these new features. One of them is panoramic video for mobile devices, which brought changes that will be focused on this study, that aims to understand how it is possible to construct narratives using this support, since its settings introduce new logic to audiovisual montage. From the perspective of discursive semiotics, the study investigates, in the works produced by Google - called Spotlight Stories - which aspects of language are reformulated in this new technique of vídeo creation and what changes in the communicative process, with the aim to proposing ways to construct and understand panoramic video narratives / Mestre

Experimental and Standard Formats for Procedural Instruction: Evaluation of Merging Pictorials and Words

Polino, Anne M. 01 July 1979 (has links) (PDF)
Three methods of training procedural tasks were studied. Forty-five high aptitude and fourth-five low aptitude Naval trainees from the Basic Electronics and Electricity School, Orlando, Florida, were given training with either a programmed instruction text with a pictorial-print information presentation format, or a standard narrative text. The effects of instructional method and aptitude on the performance of a procedural task after 1 1/2 hours of study and after on week's time were evaluated. It was shown that subjects who studied the programmed instruction text with the pictorial-print information presentation format made significantly (p<.0001) fewer performance errors, immediately after study and after one week, than did the subjects who studied the other methods. It was also shown that high aptitude subjects performed significantly (p<.0001) better than low aptitude subjects, regardless of training method. However, it was found that the low aptitude subjects who studied the programmed instruction text with the pictorial-print information presentation format performed significantly (p < 0.1) better than the low aptitude subjects who studied the other materials. These low aptitude subjects who studied the other materials. These low aptitude subjects also performed significantly (p < .01) better than the high aptitude subjects who studied the standard narrative text.

Collection development and use of non-book materials in university libraries in South Africa.

Ntuli, Nomaxabiso Claribel. January 1999 (has links)
Non-book materials have a unique role to play in university libraries of South Africa, as they re-inforce what has been learnt and facilitate presentation of subject matter to fulfil the needs of teaching and learning of institutions. The key problem of the study was that non-book materials though very important as sources of information like books, appear to be little or not used in South African university libraries. This may be caused by unclear policy presented in formal or informal collection development policies. The general aim of the study was to find out collection development practices, policies and use of non-book materials in South African university libraries. To this end the specific objectives were: To find out how non-book materials in university libraries are collected and maintained as part of teaching, learning and research. To get some understanding on the policies and patterns the university libraries follow in the development of non-book materials. To find out the manner in which non-book materials are funded and acquired. To find out the extent to which library orientation, instruction and user education cover non-book materials. The study therefore examined the collection development and usage of nonbook materials in university libraries of South Africa. All the South African university libraries except University of Zululand where the researcher works and is the AV-librarian were included in the study. The major method of study chosen was the survey method and the questionnaire was used for data collection. The methods of analysis used were the univariate and bi-variate methods and the basic type of statistics, the descriptive statistics. Libraries surveyed showed that they favoured non-book materials, and above all they do have the most NBM that are available in all formats. The study guided the researcher in making the following recommendations: The need for improvement of the NBM information services in libraries. That clear policies, whether written or not, for selection and acquisition of NBM be reviewed in libraries in South Africa. The role of NBM specialist is important and needs to be redressed. That the academic staff, library staff and students work together as a team and devise a program of library user education integrated with curriculum. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1999.

Building a search engine for music and audio on the World Wide Web

Knopke, Ian January 2005 (has links)
The main contribution of this dissertation is a system for locating and indexing audio files on the World Wide Web. The idea behind this system is that the use of both web page and audio file analysis techniques can produce more relevant information for locating audio files on the web than is used in full-text search engines. / The most important part of this system is a web crawler that finds materials by following hyperlinks between web pages. The crawler is distributed and operates using multiple computers across a network, storing results to a database. There are two main components: a set of retrievers that retrieve pages and audio files from the web, and a central crawl manager that coordinates the retrievers and handles data storage tasks. / The crawler is designed to locate three types of audio files: AIFF, WAVE, and MPEG-1 (MP3), but other types can be easily added to the system. Once audio files are located, analyses are performed of both the audio files and the associated web pages that link to these files. Information extracted by the crawler can be used to build search indexes for resolving user queries. A set of results demonstrating aspects of the performance of the crawler are presented, as well as some statistics and points of interest regarding the nature of audio files on the web.
