Corrosão sob tensão de um aço inoxidável austenítico em soluções aquosas contendo cloretos / Stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel in chlorides environments

Mariano, Neide Aparecida 20 February 1997 (has links)
The present work studies the stress corrosion cracking behavior in austenitic Fe-Cr-Mn-N stainless steel, in as received, solubilized and sensitized conditions, when submited to several chlorides environments. To evalued the stress corrosion cracking susceptibility, DCB (\"Double Cantilcver Beam\") and C(T) (\"Compact- Tension\") specimens, fatigue precracked, side grooved and wedge loaded were used. The environments employed were boiling solution of 45 wt% of MgCl2 at 154ºC, synthetic sea water at room and 100°C temperatures, and a solution with 3,5 wt% of NaCI at room temperature. The susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking has been evaluated in terms of the threshold stress intensity factor, KISCC, and the fracture surface appearance of those specimens whose the crack propagation took place was characterized. The results showed that only the specimens in the as received and sensitized conditions, were suceptible to the stress corrosion cracking effect in the solution with 45 wt% of MgCl2 at the boilling temperature. Also, it has been verified the electrochemical behavior of this steel when submited in the above environments. The results of polarization curves showed that the material presents low corrosion strength, mainly in MgCl2 environments.

Deformation Micro-mechanisms of Simple and Complex Concentrated FCC Alloys

Komarasamy, Mageshwari 12 1900 (has links)
The principal objective of this work was to elucidate the effect of microstructural features on the intrinsic dislocation mechanisms in two FCC alloys. First alloy Al0.1CoCrFeNi was from a new class of material known as complex concentrated alloys, particularly high entropy alloys (HEA). The second was a conventional Al-Mg-Sc alloy in ultrafine-grained (UFG) condition. In the case of HEA, the lattice possess significant lattice strain due to the atomic size variation and cohesive energy differences. Moreover, both the lattice friction stress and the Peierls barrier height are significantly larger than the conventional FCC metals and alloys. The experimental evidences, so far, provide a distinctive identity to the nature and motion of dislocations in FCC HEA as compared to the conventional FCC metals and alloys. Hence, the thermally activated dislocation mechanisms and kinetics in HEA has been studied in detail. To achieve the aim of examining the dislocation kinetics, transient tests, both strain rate jump tests and stress relaxation tests, were conducted. Anomalous behavior in dislocation kinetics was observed. Surprisingly, a large rate sensitivity of the flow stress and low activation volume of dislocations were observed, which are unparalleled as compared to conventional CG FCC metals and alloys. The observed trend has been explained in terms of the lattice distortion and dislocation energy framework. As opposed to the constant dislocation line energy and Peierls potential energy (amplitude, ΔE) in conventional metals and alloys, both line energy and Peierls potential undergo continuous variation in the case of HEA. These energy fluctuations have greatly affected the dislocation mobility and can be distinctly noted from the activation volume of dislocations. The proposed hypothesis was tested by varying the grain size and also the test temperature. Activation volume of dislocations was a strong function of temperature and increased with temperature. And the reduction in grain size did not affect the dislocation mechanisms and kinetics. This further bolstered the hypothesis. The second part deals with deformation characteristics of Al-Mg-Sc alloy. The microstructure obtained from the severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques differ in dislocation density, grain/cell size, and in the grain boundary character distribution. Therefore, it is vital to understand the deformation behavior of the UFG materials produced by various SPD techniques, as the microstructural features basically control the deformation mechanisms. In this study, a detailed analysis was made to understand the deformation mechanisms operative in various regimes of a stress-strain in UFG Al-Mg-Sc alloy produced via friction stir processing. The stress-strain curves exhibited serrations from the onset of yielding to the point of sample failure. The serration amplitude and frequency was higher in UFG material as compared to CG material. Furthermore, the microstructural features that result in the serrated flow were investigated along with the avalanche characteristics. The presence of both ultrafine grains and Al3Sc precipitates were the necessary conditions to reach the critical stress required to push the grain boundary into a critical state to set off an avalanche. The microstructural conditions that did not satisfy both the requirements did not exhibit deep serrations.

Microstructures, mechanical stability and strength of low-temperature reversion-treated AISI 301LN stainless steel under monotonic and dynamic loading

Järvenpää, A. (Antti) 05 February 2019 (has links)
Abstract Refining grain size is known to enhance mechanical properties also in austenitic stainless steels. To better understand the background of these properties, various reversion-treated structures were created in AISI 301LN (18Cr-7Ni-0.15N) steel and the microstructural features affecting flow behaviour and strength under monotonic and cyclic straining were investigated. Fully and partially reversed microstructures were produced using prior cold rolling thickness reductions in the range of 32–63% and both resistant and induction heating. Some selected reversed structures were also strengthening rolled to 20% reduction. The resultant microstructures were characterised using different research equipment and methods and their mechanical properties determined by microhardness, tensile and fatigue tests. The main interest was focused on the microstructural features of low-temperature reversed structures and the stability of austenite in them. Effective grain refinement was achieved after 56–63% rolling reduction. Depending on the reduction and annealing conditions, the reversed structures consisted of various amounts of submicron- and medium-sized austenite grains and retained phases. All the reversed structures showed non-homogenous, often bimodal grain size distribution. It was demonstrated that the stability of austenite was much reduced after annealing at temperatures ≤ 850 °C, which was attributed to precipitation occurring at these low temperatures. Fine grain size itself promoted higher stability, but the coarsest retained austenite was stable due to its special orientation. Therefore, medium-sized grains of 3–10 μm, formed mainly from slightly deformed strain-induced martensite, appeared to be most unstable, the fraction being highest after the lowest reduction. The yield and fatigue strengths of the low-temperature reversion-treated structures were significantly higher than those of commercial 301LN. Fatigue strength corresponded to that of a 20% cold-rolled sheet. Strength was highly enhanced even after the lowest cold rolling reduction of 32%, for the lower strength of the coarser reversed grain structure was balanced by the higher fractions of strong retained austenite and martensite phases.

Effect of solution heat treatment and of chloride/sulphate ions concentration on the pitting corrosion resistance of 17Cr-6Mn-5Ni and UNS S30403 austenitic stainless steel.

Calderón Hernández, José Wilmar 30 January 2012 (has links)
Austenitic stainless steels are widely used when both high corrosion and mechanical resistance are essentials. In general, nickel is added to stainless steels to stabilize the austenite phase. During the last decade, the nickel price fluctuated considerably; unstabling the stainless steel global market. The 200 series stainless steels, also known as Cr-Mn-Ni stainless steels, emerged as an alternative for traditional austenitic steels. In these steels, manganese replaces a fraction of nickel content, maintaining stable the austenitic phase. Consequently, the production of stainless steel containing manganese has increased notoriously. The present study has the aim to compare the pitting resistance corrosion, between the 17Cr-6Mn-5Ni (designated as 298) and UNS S30403 austenitic stainless steels. The effect of solution heat treatment temperature, and the chemical composition of environment aqueous solution were evaluated (the electrolytes used are constituted for aqueous solution with 0,6M NaCl fixed and Na2SO4 progress additions) verifying the inhibitor effect of sulfate ion in both steels on distinct temperature ranges (1010°C, 1040°C, 1070°C and 1100°C) defined for the solution heat treatments. The pitting corrosion resistance was determined by means of cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, and the answers obtained were discussed through the microstructural variations found. Optical and electron microscopy technique, X ray diffraction analysis, magnetic measurements using the ferritoscope and image analysis to ferrite phase quantification were used during this investigation. In most conditions examined, the UNS S30403 steel show highest pitting potential that 298 steel. In more detail, the results showed that addition of sodium sulfate increased the pitting corrosion resistance in media containing chloride ions of both UNS S30403 and 298 steels, in all heat treatment conditions, being more pronounced in 298 steel. The solution heat treatment had little influence on pitting resistance corrosion of UNS S30403 steel (considering separately each electrolyte); on the other hand, the 298 steel showed a strong dependence with the heat treatments: in absence of sulfate (0,6M NaCl) the heat treatments decreased the pitting corrosion resistance, but in presence of sulfate, the gradual increment of Na2SO4 concentration had a beneficial effect, each time more strong, reaching, for 0,6M NaCl+0,6M Na2SO4 condition in heat treatment temperatures 1070°C and 1100°C, higher pitting potential values than UNS S30403 steel. The presence of a chromium-rich second phase (chromium ferrite) in both steels (UNS S30403 and 298) and manganese-rich precipitates in 298 steel were detected. The different behaviors were explained through annealing solution of manganese-rich precipitates found in 298 steel. It is concluded that after heat treatments, the dissolution of these precipitates increased the manganese content in solid solution in 298 steel. Consequently decreasing the pitting potential values for 0,6M NaCl electrochemical condition (environment without Na2SO4). On the other hand, in presence of Na2SO4 the inhibitor effect is potentialized due to highest chemical affinity between ion sulfate and manganese (now in solid solution) compared to that between chloride ion and manganese. The UNS S30403 stainless steel does not contain manganese as alloying element, nor manganese-rich precipitates, deleterious effect in 0,6M NaCl was not observed, and the beneficial effect on pitting corrosion resistance due the sulfate additions was not significantly different in this steel when the annealing solution temperature is changed.

Strain rate influence in the spot welding joints failure.

Rogerio Keizo Nakano 24 August 2005 (has links)
This study presents an attempt to probe the effect that some materials strain rate sensitivity could set in the failure mode of the spot weld joint. It is well known that some materials when dynamically loaded and deformed have its mechanical strength increased and therefore this strength increase could affect the joint failure behavior. The failure modes taken in account in this study are the shear of the spot weld in the interface region and the pull-out of the spot weld in the heat affected zone. An analytical formulation to the acting stress in the spot weld region owing to the dynamic loading has been proposed based on studies performed to the statically loaded spot weld joint. Moreover, an analytical formulation has been proposed to quantify the strain rate, and it has been incorporated in the dynamic stress formulation. A finite element model has been also built. Several geometrical configurations of this model have been analyzed under several velocity loading conditions, and their results have been compared with the analytical considerations. As the main result, it has been verified, to the estimated strain rate formulation, the failure mode in the dynamic loading condition has not effectively changed in comparison with the statically loaded joint failure. And according to the formulation considered and the finite elements models results the failure would tend to happen in the heat affected zone to any of the loading cases taken in account in this study.

Modeling and simulation with molecular dynamics of the edge dislocation behavior in the presence of Frank loops in austenitic stainless steels Fe-Ni-Cr / Modélisation et simulation par dynamique moléculaire du comportement d'une dislocation coin en présence de boucles de Frank dans les aciers austénitiques Fe-Ni-Cr

Baudouin, Jean-Baptiste 05 June 2014 (has links)
Austenitic stainless steels are widely used in the nuclear industry as internals. These structures reside mainly in the reactor vessel and, due to their proximity with fuel assemblies, are subjected to severe operating conditions. These elements are exposed to high irradiation doses which can reach 100 dpa after 40 years of operating, at a temperature close to 350°C. These operating conditions affect the microstructure of steels and their mechanical behavior, which leads to the deterioration of their mechanical properties and their corrosion resistance. The objective of this PhD research work is to establish at the atomic scale a constitutive law describing the edge dislocation motion in a random Fe-Ni10-Cr20 solid solute solution, to bring a comprehensive understanding of the interaction mechanism between the edge dislocation and the Frank loops and to investigate the effect of temperature, alloying random generator, orientation and size of the Frank loop on the mechanical stress. To achieve these objectives, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted with a recently developed FeNiCr potential used to mimic the behavior of austenitic stainless steels. These simulations have been performed in static conditions as well as at 300 K, 600 K and 900 K and the interactions realized for loop sizes of 2nm and 10nm. A constitutive law taking into account the temperature and strain rate is proposed; the interaction between the edge dislocation and the Frank loop revealed 3 kinds of interaction mechanisms: simple shearing, unfaulting and absorption of the loop. Absorption is the most stable mechanism; the analyses of the resulting mechanical properties have shown that the unfaulting mechanism requires the highest stress to make the dislocation overcome the obstacle. On the other hand, contrary to previous studies, the unfaulting of the loop surface occurs only when the dislocation comes into contact with the edge dislocation; for the 2 nm Frank loop size, the coupling between the probability of the outcome of the reaction and the average strength of the obstacle constitutes useful data for Dislocation Dynamics simulations. The observations of the resulting Frank loop configurations following the interaction with the dislocation allow justifying the emergence of clear bands observed in TEM. This work has been partially supported by the European Commission FP7 with the grant number 232612 as part of the PERFORM 60 project.

Fretting behavior of AISI 301 stainless steel sheet in full hard condition

Hirsch, Michael Robert 10 July 2008 (has links)
Fretting, which can occur when two bodies in contact undergo a low amplitude relative slip, can drastically reduce the fatigue performance of a material. The extent of fretting damage is dependent on the material combination and is affected by many parameters, making it difficult to design against fretting. Some of these parameters include contact force, displacement amplitude, and contacting materials. This work develops a method for quantifying the extent of damage from fretting as a function of these parameters for a thin sheet of AISI 301 stainless steel in the full hard condition in contact with both ANSI A356 aluminum and AISI 52100 steel contacting bodies. Fretting experiments were conducted on a Phoenix Tribology DN55 Fretting Machine using a fixture which was developed for holding thin specimens. The displacement amplitude and normal force were systematically varied in order to cover a range that could typically be experienced during service. The tribological behavior was studied by analyzing friction force during cycling and inspecting the resulting surface characteristics. Fretting damaged specimens were cycled in tension in a servohydraulic test system to failure. The decrease in fatigue life caused by fretting damage was determined by comparing the stress-life (S-N) response of the fretted specimens to the S-N response of the virgin material, thus characterizing the severity of the fretting damage. The conditions that lead to the greatest reduction in life were identified in this way. Using the fracture mechanics based NASGRO model, an Equivalent Initial Flaw Size (EIFS) was used to quantify the level of fretting damage, thus separating the life of the component into crack nucleation and subsequent propagation. This method and data will allow engineers to design more robust components that resist fretting damage, thus increasing the safety and reliability of the system.

Diffusion bonded heat exchanger : simulation of deformations and interface mechanical strentgh prediction

Maunay, Matthieu 06 April 2018 (has links)
A new concept of compact plate heat exchanger is developed for the energy conversion system performances of the ASTRID reactor. Manufacturing the complex geometry is possible by a diffusion-welding process: engraved 316L stainless steel plates are stacked and bonded during a Hot Isostatic Pressing cycle (HIP). The problematic is to get strong interfaces without deforming the channels which is harmful for the exchanger efficiency. To reach a good compromise, this thesis work will help to optimize the HIP parameters (pressure/temperature/ time). The first line of work is about the simulation of the heat exchanger deformation along manufacturing process. The influence of numerical parameters (elements size, convergence criterion) was studied to optimize the accuracy and the calculation time. Simulations have shown the importance of structure stack faults (sliding and plate ripples) in the increase of exchanger deformation. Then, a mechanical characterisation of plates was carried out to identify the constitutive equation between 20°C and 1040°C.The second line is about the interface modelling along welding and the prediction of their mechanical strength, as a whole can lead to the definition of an interface acceptability criterion. A microstructural and mechanical study has enabled to correlate the mechanical strength of a diffusion-bonded junction and its bonded area. Indeed, residual porosity disappearance is the main criterion to get good interfaces mechanical strength. However, the grain boundary migration is required to reach the rolled material properties. A void closure analytical model (Hill and Wallach) was used to estimate the bonded area of an interface according to HIP cycle parameters by modelling the contribution of (visco)plastic and diffusion (surface and boundary) mechanisms. Associated with the correlation between mechanical strength and the fraction of bonded area, it enables to propose a predictive tool for the mechanical strength of diffusion-bonded interfaces.

Sória, Bruno Santana January 2016 (has links)
The milling of austenitic stainless steel is important process for the production of part that require mechanical and corrosion resistance. However, the machining of this steel represents a challenge by its adverse features. The high hardening rate and the high relative hardness make it resistant to cutting and can generate vibrations in different frequency ranges. An important technique for the processing of vibration signals is the Wavelet Transform that allows the analysis of different signal frequencies through the subdivisions into approximations and details. In this work, high and low frequency vibration generated in end milling of AISI 316 stainless steel were analyzed from force signals collected through a piezoelectric dynamometer and processed via Wavelet Discrete Transform. Besides, the roughness profiles were investigated, as well as average (Ra) and partial mean (Rz) roughness parameters, and waviness generated on the milled surface. Three different insert nose radius, end mill tool lengths, depths of cut and spindle speeds were used in the experiments, totaling 81 combinations of parameters. It was found that depth of cut represented the greatest influence on vibration. In end milling with spindle speed below the minimum recommended by the tool manufacturer (1600 rpm) it occurred difficulties in the chip formation and removal. The modification of tool nose radius greater influenced the vibration at small depths of cut or in regions close to the stability limit. The end mill tool length showed different behaviors for the vibration, which may be related to the change of natural frequencies of the mechanical system and may also define an unstable state. The correlation of detail (D1) of the resulting force (vibration at high frequencies) with the parameter Ra for intense vibration conditions (larger amplitudes) was verified, but in stable state. Thus, D1 can be used for detecting chatter in end milling process of AISI 316 stainless steel.

This research project has had as objective to study all evolution that governs the growth, distribution and classification of pits in ABNT 304 and 310S austenitic stainless steels obtained in the state as receveid and treated, submitted to different times of exposition in saline mist. The originality of this work has been based on the development of a technique for morphologic characterization and of located corrosion associating with the shape description, size specific and population parameters. The 304 stainless steel has presented the following morphology: irregular > transition region A > conic > hemispherical > transition region B, in which irregular and transition region A > are in larger amounts in the system. In the treated alloy at each exposition time, the pits amount is at the same order, in other words, transition region A, irregular, conic, hemispherical, transition region B, in which the pits in the transtion region A and irregular are present in larger amounts in the system. The 310S stainless steel, as receveid, has exhibited the following morphology: hemispherical pits > transition region A > transtion region B > irregular > conic, in which the pits are present in large amounts in: hemispherical pits and transition region A.
