Perspectives of Pro-revivalism: The Christian History and the Great Awakening

Brown, Lisa Thurston 12 March 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The Christian History was a pro-revivalist magazine printed in Boston from 1743-1745 during what is known as the Great Awakening. It contained accounts of revivalism written by pro-revivalist ministers from throughout the American colonies, England and Scotland. These ministers believed that the Holy Spirit was being poured out upon the land in a shower of grace, causing unprecedented numbers of people to convert to Christ. In The Christian History, pro-revivalist ministers expressed their support for the revivals and shared their experiences. Thus the magazine has typically been viewed as religious propaganda advocating a single, polemical viewpoint. However, in spite of its pro-revival stance, The Christian History contains a spectrum of ideas pertaining to theology, religious history and the controversial issues that surfaced during the Awakening. For instance, although revival supporters sought to defend the Awakening as an authentic outpouring of God's grace, they did not all agree on how to handle the revivals. When it came to the "errors of doctrine" and "disorders of practice" that surfaced during the Awakening -- things like Antinomianism, bodily manifestations and itinerancy -- Christian History ministers responded differently. Though they sought to form a more uniform policy regarding these issues and others in a pro-revival ministerial meeting, in the end their opinions and reactions were shaped by their personal experiences with the revivals. In spite of their differing views regarding errors and disorders, Christian History ministers evaluated and contextualized the revivals similarly. In their revival narratives they frequently drew upon the Bible to explain and support their pro-revival stance. Some also used historical precedents as tropes for demonstrating that aspects of revivalism were perhaps unusual, but not thoroughly new. Most, however, sought to legitimize the revivals by describing their positive social qualities. For example, they wrote how tavern-going and neighborly contentions decreased, whereas occasions for religious worship multiplied. These "good fruits" of revivalism, asserted Christian History contributors, showed that the Awakening had changed the "face" of society for the better and was therefore an authentic outpouring of God's grace.

Translating Gender and Sexuality in The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Zhang, Xiaobo 01 September 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis project is comprised of a partial Chinese translation of The Awakening, a translator’s introduction in Chinese for Chinese readers, and an accompanying critical analysis for my translation. My Chinese translation is guided by feminist translation theory. Its central ideas are that translations should expose and redress gender-based prejudices, challenge and subvert male-dominated linguistic and cultural systems, and promote gender equality in cross-cultural communications. The Awakening is a pioneering feminist novel written by the American author Kate Chopin and published in 1899. It centers on protagonist Edna Pontellier’s gradual departure from her socially conventional roles as a mother and wife and her unfolding awakening to her individuality and sexuality in the late Victorian era. My partial Chinese translation focuses on the gender and sexuality-related excerpts in the novel, which include the depictions of the female body, the Victorian patriarchy, the inner emotions of the protagonist, and the intimacy and sexuality displayed between the protagonist and the male characters in the novel. The translator’s introduction aims to introduce Chinese readers to Kate Chopin and her works and explain the translation interventions I have made in my translation. The accompanying critical analysis discusses my translation approaches and the decision-making process to foreground the feminist themes and convey them to the Chinese readership while preserving the language texture of an English novel from the 19th century in its Chinese rendition.

The provincial world of the Urals in the prose of A. S. Pogorelov (Sigova)

В., Sapsa, Y. V. January 2023 (has links)
The work is devoted to the study of the life and work of the Ural writer of the turn of the XIX–XX centuries A. S. Pogorelov (Sigov). Pogorelov is among the little-studied authors who reveal the post-reform Ural reality in their work, among them: P. I. Zayakin-Uralsky, A. G. Turkin, I. F. Kolotovkin, et al. Within the framework of this work, the writer's life path is reconstructed, a holistic portrait of the context of the literary process of the Urals, the socio-historical development of the region in the XIX–early XX century, the development of the Russian province is created. The work involved archival sources used for the first time when writing a master's thesis. The author analyzes Pogorelov's work: the typology of the author's characters is presented for the first time, a comparative analysis of a number of works by Pogorelov and Mamin-Sibiryak is carried out, works of other Russian classics were involved.

Negative affect mediates the relationship between the Cortisol Awakening Response and Conduct Problems in boys

Walsh, Anthony 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis begins with two chapters which discuss conduct problems and stress regulation, with a focus on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Subsequently, the literature is reviewed and we see that with regards to the relationship between conduct problems and HPA axis activity, the findings are inconsistent. It is possible that methodological considerations underlie the inconsistency found in the literature and the following chapter is concerned with methodology. This is followed by the featured study presented in this thesis which examines the link between the cortisol awakening response (CAR), which is considered a good indicator of HPA axis functioning, and conduct problems in children. Further, negative affect has been linked to both conduct problems and the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR). Thus it was hypothesized that negative affect acts as a mediator in the cortisol-conduct problems relationship. The featured study found that a reduced CAR was associated with both negative affect and conduct problems, however only in boys and not in girls. Further, the mediation hypothesis was supported in boys. The last chapter in this thesis discusses the implications of this mediation finding for theories of conduct problems as well as proposing some psychobiological mechanisms to explain the sex differences found.

Alteração do funcionamento do eixo HHA na depressão pós-parto e correlações com polimorfismos do gene do CRHR1 e com a neuroquímica do giro do cíngulo anterior / Altered functioning of the HPA axis in depressed postpartum women and correlations with polymorphisms in the CRHR1 gene and with the neurochemistry of the anterior cingulate gyrus

Rezende, Marcos Gonçalves de 15 April 2016 (has links)
No geral, estes resultados sugerem que as alterações do eixo HHA de puérperas deprimidas no puerpério tardio estão associadas com fatores genéticos e com a neuroquímica funcional do GCA / Postpartum depression (PPD) has been associated with changes in the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but little is known about the involvement of brain structures, or other mechanisms underlying these changes. A key assumption is that stress inherent to the puerperal period, individual vulnerability, and especially the hormonal changes resulting from the end of pregnancy play an important causal role in the alterations of the HPA axis and in the incidence of PPD. Studies on major depressive disorder show that functional changes in brain areas, such as the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG), are related to depressed mood, and other researchers investigated the relation between the neurochemistry of the ACG and the activity of the HPA axis. Research on the HPA axis genes of interest have also reported associations between polymorphisms in these genes and changes in cortisol levels. The present study tested the hypothesis that depressed women in the remote postpartum period would show attenuation in the functioning of the HPA axis, measured by cortisol levels 30 minutes after awakening (cortisol awakening response, CAR) and by diurnal variation (DV) throughout the day; and also that polymorphisms in a gene of the HPA axis, the promoter gene of the corticotropin releasing hormone receptor type 1 (CRH-R1), would present association with depressive symptoms in the postpartum period to predict the levels of cortisol; and finally that the changes in the functioning of the HPA axis of postpartum depressed women have a relationship with the neurochemistry of the ACG. Results indicated that (1) around the sixth month after delivery, CAR and DV were attenuated in depressed postpartum women compared with euthymic postpartum women and with non-postpartum healthy control women; (2) metabolites present in the ACG showed correlation with measures of the HPA axis in depressed postpartum women; and (3) the presence of depressive symptoms in association with CRHR1 polymorphisms predicted changes in cortisol levels. Overall, these results suggest that changes in the functioning of the HPA axis of depressed postpartum women in the remote postpartum period are associated with genetic factors and with the functional neurochemistry of the ACG

In Search of Eros and Freedom : Four Portraits of Women by Kate Chopin / På spaning efter lust och frihet : Fyra kvinnoporträtt av Kate Chopin

Bate Holmberg, Elizabet January 2009 (has links)

In this essay, Kate Chopin's portraits of women in three short stories, 'The Story of an Hour', 'A Respectable Woman', Athénaïse and the novel The Awakening are studied. It is argued that the outcomes depicted can be seen as increasingly provocative and extreme and that the main conflict and ending of The Awakening is a development and combination of the conflicts and resolutions in the three short stories.
/
I uppsatsen studeras Kate Chopins kvinnoporträtt i tre noveller, 'The Story of an Hour', 'A Respectable Woman', Athénaïse och i romanen The Awakening.
