The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature of the North-Atlantic Ocean that extends from Iceland to the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone. Located between the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea, the Reykjanes Ridge strongly influences the subpolar gyre circulation and is a gate toward the deep convection areas. However, the circulation and distribution across the Reykjanes Ridge has never been directly quantified such that the characterization of the connection between the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea is still incomplete. As part of the Reykjanes Ridge Experiment project, we were able to analyze the circulation around, above and across the Reykjanes Ridge. Mainly based on hydrographic sections along and perpendicular to the ridge axis, the aim of this PhD thesis was thus to characterize the 3-D circulation and properties of the flow along and across the Reykjanes Ridge. We started by accurately quantifying geostrophic transports across the sections, which led to improvements in the treatment of S-ADCP data. Across the Reykjanes Ridge, the intensity of the wesward branch of the subpolar gyre was estimated at21.9 + 2.5 Sv in June – July 2015 with intensifications at the Bight Fracture Zone (BFZ) and at 59 – 62°N. At the BFZ, overflow waters are influenced by the bathymetry such as their hydrological properties evolve as they cross the Reykjanes Ridge. Finally, both the bathymetry and the cyclonic horizontal circulation of the Iceland Basin regulate the evoluton of the along-ridge flows by blocking water masses, and thus shaping the water mass distribution over the Reykjanes Ridge. In addition to waters from the crossridge flow, the Irminger Current incorporates waters from the center of the Irminger Sea.

Bathymetry, substratum and emergent vegetation distributions during an extreme flood event in Delta Marsh, ManitobaGeard, Nola 25 September 2015 (has links)
In 2011 Manitoba experienced an extreme flood. The operation of the Assiniboine River Diversion resulted in the addition of approximately 1.72 million cubic decameters of water to Lake Manitoba and an increase in water levels to 1.5 m above normal. Although this event resulted damage to farmland and many local homes, it also provided me the unique opportunity to utilize previously impractical methods of bathymetric and substrata distribution analysis in the adjoining Delta Marsh. Combined with satellite imagery taken in 2011 I was able to classify the vegetation classes within the study area and explore the relationship between vegetation distributions and water depth as well as those between water depth and substrata distribution. A seed bank study was carried out to explore the diversity of viable seeds in the area. In addition, satellite imagery taken in 2009 was used to evaluate the effects of the flood event experienced in 2011. / October 2015

Resolving relationships between deep-sea benthic diversity and multi-scale topographic heterogeneityDu Preez, Cherisse 02 January 2015 (has links)
Resolving diversity patterns and their underlying drivers has application for both ecological theory and ocean management. Because seafloor characteristics are often used to assess bottom habitat, I examined the relationship between deep-sea benthic (bottom-living) diversity and multi-scale topographic heterogeneity. Most work occurred on the Canadian Pacific continental shelf at Learmonth Bank with additional sites in Strait of Georgia (BC) and Gulf of Maine (Atlantic shelf). High-resolution species distribution and seafloor data were annotated from remotely operated vehicle benthic imagery surveys while large-scale seafloor data were derived from multibeam sonar.
New method development to address problems of current methods and to facilitate comparison among ecosystems is a major outcome. My new MiLS method (microtopographic laser scanning) can profile the deep seafloor at a resolution of ~1-2 cm with high accuracy and precision. I also developed a new ACR (arc-chord ratio) rugosity index as a measure of 3-D topographic heterogeneity that is simple, accurate and highly versatile.
Model systems and scales vary among my studies but results consistently yield a positive relationship between diversity and topographic heterogeneity and identify bottom hydrodynamics as an important underlying driver. Rockfish Sebastes spp. associate with higher seafloor rugosity non-randomly and select for deep-sea corals and sponges over inert substrata alone. Data indicate that degradation of biogenic structures is a long-term detriment to rockfish species. Gorgonian coral- and sponge-dominant biotopes strongly associate with a single substratum type. These relationships were used to map coral and sponge distributions. This work, which collectively adds new information on the ecological relevance and distribution of corals and sponges, is pertinent to the conservation and management of fish stocks and vulnerable marine ecosystems. Epibenthic community variables abundance, richness, and Shannon diversity positively correlated with both the local microtopographic heterogeneity on a scale of 10 m2 and with the surrounding regional large-scale topographic heterogeneity on scales of 25 to 250,000 m2. Relationships were strongest between epibenthic community variables and the largest scale rugosity and were used to generate and test predictive diversity models. Where management strategies rely on surrogate measures in data-poor areas, mapping benthic diversity using ACR rugosity will provide good indicators.
Although bottom hydrodynamics is consistently identified as an underlying driver of epibenthic patterns related to topographic heterogeneity, data suggest the nature of the relationship varies across spatial scales. At small scales, high topographic heterogeneity likely increases diversity by increasing the number of available niches (including hydrodynamic gradients; e.g., the abrupt vertical rugosity created by tall corals and sponges provides rockfish refuge from currents) while at large scales, high topographic heterogeneity increases local diversity less directly through distant hydraulic events that alter bottom flow hydrodynamics. / Graduate / 0329 / 0416 / 0799 / cdupreez@uvic.ca

The impact of permafrost degradation on the pelagic water chemistry and biota of small tundra lakesThompson, Megan Shera 27 August 2009 (has links)
Up to 59 small tundra lakes were sampled in the uplands east of the Mackenzie Delta, NWT, Canada, in order to assess the impact of permafrost thaw on pelagic nutrient concentrations and biota. Permafrost thaw did not affect the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus or organic carbon in the water column of the study lakes. Instead, nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations were positively related to relative catchment size, and phosphorus concentrations were negatively related to maximum lake depth. Lakes affected by permafrost thaw did have lower water colour. In lakes not affected by thaw, where plankton production could have been light limited due to high water colour, the TP-chlorophyll a relationship was weaker than in lakes affected by thaw, where light limitation was probably weaker. A model selection analysis for chlorophyll a concentration indicated water colour as the best predictor variable in unaffected lakes, but nitrogen and phosphorus as the best predictors in thaw-affected lakes. This result, in particular, suggested a significant shift in the processes governing productivity in thaw-affected lakes.
In a smaller subset of lakes, chlorophyll a concentrations were lower in lakes affected by actively degrading permafrost than in lakes affected by stabilized thaw scars or in unaffected lakes. In contrast, zooplankton abundance was lowest in lakes with stabilized thaw scars. Bacterioplankton abundance was not different across the gradient of permafrost thaw. The differences in phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance between active and stable thaw scar lakes did not display a gradient of response that mirrored the degree of permafrost thaw activity. Because sampling did not include higher trophic levels, including macroinvertebrates and fish, it was difficult to determine how these biomass patterns arose. However, detectable differences existed in the morphometry of the lakes that might have affected habitat conditions for several species. Deep, near-shore lake-bottom pits occurred in lakes affected by permafrost thaw, while unaffected lakes were generally deepest at their centre. The pits increased the effective depth of the thaw-affected lakes, and allowed for thermal stratification where it might not have otherwise occurred. Future research should explore the habitat-related impacts of permafrost thaw on adjacent and higher trophic levels in order to better understand the fundamental shifts in trophic structures that appear in lakes affected by permafrost thaw.

Data from satellite altimetry and gravity were used to the morphostructural analysis in the Pelotas Basin-RS region. The EGM2008 geopotential model through the Bouguer anomalies was used in the gravimetric approach and the DTU10BAT global model was used in the bathymetric approach. Through the Bouguer anomalies maps and the gravimetric profiles that were generated, it was observed that Bouguer anomalies increase positively from coast towards to the major ocean depths, what characterizes a progressive crustal thinning associated with the continental drift. The behavior of the Bouguer anomalies obtained from satellite data showed the presence of a rupture, known as Charneira Albo-Aptiana, on the continental shelf. The incidence of significant positive anomalies values on the Baixo de Mostardas region suggests the presence of a higher-density mass in this region. Because of the resolution of the gravimetric data used in this research was not enough, it was not possible to show the presence of paleochannels in the region, requiring a greater spatial resolution data, associated with other methods of investigation. The use of satellite altimetric data (model DTU10BAT) allowed the bathymetric analysis of the continental shelf and the research of morphological configuration of the region, which was divided into three areas: Torres- Solidão Lighthouse, Solidão Lighthouse-Conceição Lighthouse and Conceição Lighthouse-Sarita Lighthouse. A theoretical model was generated and it was compared with the DTU10BAT model in the generation of the bathymetric anomalies map. The axes of negative bathymetric anomalies identified are often associated with the direction of paleochannels, as well as the positive anomalies are related to lines of sea level paleostabilizations or structural highs. It was defined a sequence of discontinuities at the Conceição Lighthouse proximities which presented a significant coincidence with paleochannels that were delineated in the same region through other studies. The data were processed and integrated in a geographic information system. Gravimetric and bathymetric data from satellite missions are an important tool in regional studies for areas that involve geological and oceanographic applications.

Previous issue date: 2011-02-28 / Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte / This work focuses the geomorphological characterization and spatial data
modeling in the shallow continental shelf within the Folha Touros limits (SB-25-CV-II),
based on bathymetric data analysis and remote sensing products interpretation. The Rio
Grande do Norte state is located in northeastern Brazil and the work area is located at the
transition region between the eastern and northern portions of their coast. The
bathymetric surveys were conduced between march and may 2009, using a 10 meters
long vessel and 0.70 meters draught, equipped with global positioning system and echo
sounder (dual beam, 200KHz , 14?). The fieldwork resulted in 44 bathymetric profiles
espaced 1.5 km and 30 km average length. The bathymetric data amount were 111,200
points and were navigated 1395.7 km within na area about 1,850 km2. The bathymetric
data were corrected for the tide level, vessel draught and were subsequently entered into a
geographic information system for further processing. Analysis of remote sensing
products was carried out using Landsat 7/ETM + band 1, from november 1999. The
image was used for visualization and mapping submerged features. The results showed
the presence of geomorphological features within the study area. Were observed, from
the analysis of local bathymetry and satellite image, seven types of geomorphological
features. The channels, with two longitudinals channels (e. g. San Roque and Cioba
channels) and other perpendicular to the coast (e. g. Touros, Pititinga and Barretas).
Coastal reef formations (Maracaja?, Rio do Fogo and Cioba). Longitudinal waves,
described in the literature as longitudinal dunes. The occurrence of a transverse dune
field. Another feature observed was the oceanic reefs, an rock alignment parallel to the
coast. Were identified four riscas , from north to south: risca do Liso, Gameleira,
Zumbi, Pititinga (the latter being described for the first time). Finally, an oceanic terrace
was observed in the deepest area of study. Image interpretation corroborated with the in
situ results, enabling visualization and description for all features in the region. The
results were analysed in an integrating method (using the diferent methodologies applied
in this work) and it was essential to describe all features in the area. This method allowed
us to evaluate which methods generated better results to describe certain features. From
these results was possible to prove the existence of submerged features in the eastern
shallow continental shelf of Rio Grande do Norte. In this way, the conclusions was (1)
this study contributed to the provision of new information about the area in question,
particularly with regard to data collection in situ depths, (2) the method of data collection
and interpretation proves to be effective because, through this, it was possible to visualize
and interpret the features present in the study area and (3) the interpretation and
discussion of results in an integrated method, using different methodologies, can provide
O Estado do Rio Grande do Norte est? localizado
outros perpendiculares a costa (e. g. Touros, Pititinga e Barretas).
amplamente discutidas e possibilitou avaliar quais m?todos geraram melhores resultados
Grande do Norte.

Stabilization ponds compose systems of wastewater treatment citizens to the variation of efficiency decurrent, amongst other factors, of the climatic variations. The variation of efficiency and stratification in stabilization ponds, located in subtropical environment, at different seasons, was the main objective. For this purpose, the efficiency of two stabilization ponds systems located in the Vale do Ribeira de Iguape (SP) - in cities as Jacupiranga and Pariquera-Açu - was determined, in sazonal period (four seasons) and weekly (three days consecutive), as well as temperature, electric condutivity, pH and dissolved oxygen profiles and environment aspects had been measured (air temperature, solar radiation, direction and speed of the wind and precipitation). Moreover, operational aspects, such as, volume of sludge, volume of water, outflow and theoretical detention times had been measured in order to characterize only the facultative ponds. Alterations in sazonal behavior of these variables and standards of similarity between efficiency and thermal stratification had been analyzed through the tool statistics análise do componente principal (PCA). It was observed, mainly, that the sazonal variation of efficiency was important, so, in July/06 the quality of the affluent and effluent was different to the other seasons, in other words, it was observed sazonal variation of physical and chemical variable. Daily variation happened in January/06, time of more precipitations and thermal homogeneity. In other analysis with PCA, the thermal stratification was significant and it was related with other variable. The outflow and detention times, in the facultative ponds, had been similar others facultatives ponds and the volume of sludge did not exceed 3% of the volume of water in the ponds.
