Earthing common worship : an ecotheological critique of the Common Worship texts of the Church of EnglandClines, Jeremy Mark Sebastian January 2011 (has links)
This thesis undertakes an interdisciplinary analysis of new Church of England liturgies (Common Worship) from an ecotheological point of view: making use of reader response theory, literary analysis, a social scientific survey, liberation theology, environmental and political ethics and liturgical theology. Chapter 1 considers the theological, political and sociological influences on liturgical reform, which include, inculturation, the expression of ethics in the prayer of the Church, liberation theologies, technology, and agrarianism. Chapter 2 considers methods of liturgical change and the scope for making creation visible in liturgy. Chapter 3 finds justification in reader response theory for determining ecotheological priorities for critiquing liturgy. Analysis of Common Worship texts occurs: in Chapter 4, using literary analysis; in Chapter 5 via social scientific survey of clergy using Common Worship; Chapter 6 looks in details at Collects and Post Communions and undertakes an ecotheological rewriting of 9 sample texts. Chapter 7 identifies lessons for liturgical revision in general and for eco-liturgical reform in particular, paying particular attention to the dissonant creation theologies unearthed in Common Worship, the necessity for future revisions, and the importance and implication of technological change for liturgical writers and commentators.

Community of singularities : the possibility of being-with in the work of Heidegger, Lévinas and DerridaPopescu, Maria Alexandra January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to attempt a re-conceptualisation of ethics and politics away from the well-rehearsed structure of singularity versus community, particularity or individuality versus universality, as well as from the inadequate dyadic positioning of these sets of terms. Dominant scholarship on Lévinas's and Derrida's work has generally been divided into those who see Derrida's work as continuing the Lévinasian legacy, and thus having little to offer to the political, and those who would like to divorce the trajectory of deconstruction from the Lévinasian heritage, and thus reveal it as being inherently political. The above split in opinion is largely based on a divergence in the interpretation of Lévinas's own writings as essentially about ethics, and therefore as either having little to offer to our thinking of the political, or as undergoing something like a ‘split', with the focus coming to rest more clearly on politics through the figure of the third, in later writings. My contribution to this impasse is to foreground a recent, though much overlooked notion within Jacques Derrida's work as an alternative to thinking being-with: that of community of singularities. I also suggest the notions of alteronomy and fiendship as alternatives to thinking being-with, which take into account the way in which the other-within-the-self restructures the concepts of freedom and autonomy and takes them beyond a humanist context. I will be arguing from two overarching points: a) that Lévinas's own work can convincingly be interpreted as not only concerned with the political from his earliest writings, but as setting up the political as the interruptive force within the ethical, thus providing a shift in perspective for what is essentially a mutually-interruptive relation between ethics and politics, and b) that Derrida's own writing need not be ‘divorced' from Lévinas's trajectory of thought, in order to be considered as having something to offer to our re-thinking of the relation between ethics and politics.

The Question Of Freedom In Political Philosophies Of Thomas Hobbes And Jean-jacques RousseauYigit, Pervin 01 October 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to examine the question of freedom in its relation to political authority in social contract theories of Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778). In order to do that, discussions on human nature, evolution into political association and the foundations of legitimate governments are focused on. As the social contract theories of Hobbes and Rousseau mainly seek for rational justification of political obligation, the primary aim of this thesis is to analyze the nature of political obligation in order to discuss the relation between subject and sovereign in the framework of freedom.

A Survey Of The Distinction Between Ethics And Politics With An Aristotelian AppraisalCelik, Sinan Kadir 01 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
A SURVEY OF THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN ETHICS AND POLITICS
WITH AN ARISTOTELIAN APPRAISAL

In the history of philosophy, ethics and politics have either been considered as
two unrelated, irreducible realms or as identical to each other. In the thesis the
historical transformation of the problematic relation between ethics and politics
is critically evaluated. It is argued that from the emergence of the conflict in
Ancient Greece following the &ldquo / Socratic ideal&rdquo / to the modern attempt for its
resolution by the &ldquo / Machiavellian revolution,&rdquo / the prominent theories developed
for dealing with the problem have defined politics as an amoral practice, as a
science, a technique or an art. An alternative Aristotelian approach is tried to be
developed so as to elucidate the nature of the distinction between ethics and
politics. According to this view, ethics and politics can neither be strictly
separated from each other nor be reduced into one another. The Aristotelian
conception of politike as &ldquo / philosophy of human affairs&rdquo / has ethical, practical and
technical dimensions. The thesis tries to clarify at which point ethics and politics
should be conceived as two different practices and at which point they cannot be
treated as independent from each other. Hence, the present study aims to
determine the peculiarities and the strong sides of Aristotelian practical
philosophy in order to offer an alternative to resolve the problem under
consideration.

An Inquiry On Justice: Bases, Bearers And PrinciplesKibar, Sibel 01 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
One of the prevalent notions in the late twentieth century&lsquo / s political philosophy, justice lies at the heart of ethics, politics and jurisprudence. In this study, while I insist on the dominion of politics and the economic mode of production over morality and law, I consider the ethical realm to be also very important in justifying political movements and transformations. Defining the concept of justice plays a role more or less in the realization of justice on the Earth. I try to reveal the bases of justice in the second chapter. My attitude can be defined as foundationalism and realism molded with historical materialism. Subsequently, I attempt to deal with the bearers of justice / i.e., individuals, institutions, or structures. The contemporary political theories on justice pay attention to the notion of the individual and the faculty of rationality. Although I admit the role ofindividuals in ensuring justice, social structures are the main bearers of justice. In the fourth chapter, I cover the main principles or pillars of justice, namely, equality, freedom, and rights. Equality can be classified as legal, political, social, economic and moral. I claim that economic equality is the principal one among others since economic inequality usually generates other inequalities. Economic equality can be satisfied through just production in which alienation and exploitation do not take place. Absence of exploitation is also required for realization of freedoms and human rights. Thus, I propose the principle of absence of exploitation as a primary justice principle, which is necessary but not sufficient to eradicate injustices in the world.

The Experience Of The Ethical And Its Political Consequences In Later Heidegger And DerridaCamci, Cihan 01 August 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In my doctorate thesis, I have discussed the notion of the experience of the ethical and
its political consequences. In this context, I have pointed to the central strategy of
Kantian ethics that is called transcendental strategy. Transcendental strategy relies on a
concept of causality, which unlike the causality that governs the laws of nature, arises
from freedom in its cosmological meaning. I have discussed Heideggerian challenge to
this concept of causality from an ontological point of view that gives rise to totalitarian
political consequences. In relation to Heideggerian challenge, I have argued that
Derrida&rsquo / s critique of Heidegger gives rise to democratic political consequences that
reconcile the origin of ethics with fiction through utilization of the transcendence of
transcendentality. Thereby, I have argued that experience of the ethical for Derrida
induces to similar political consequences with holistic pragmatism.

Environmental Ethics Approach In The World And In TurkeyYucel (karakoc), A. Gamze 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyzes the environmental knowledge, attitudes and environmentally significant behaviors of the environmental professionals such as academicians and higher level of bureaucrats in Turkey. Additionally socio-demographic characteristics of target groups were measured to examine if environmental professionals having environmental knowledge and defending ecocentric or at least homocentric approaches do really reflect their attitudes and knowledge into actual behaviors or a paradox arises when actual behaviors are compared with expressed beliefs and attitudes. It was found that, socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, age and education were not show statistically significant difference at the respondents&rsquo / behavior. There only exist a positive relationship between education and environmental knowledge. Additionally, the data herein supports the theoretical assumption that, distinct professional groups have different environmental ethical approaches and different levels of environmental knowledge. Academicians have the highest consciousness level of environmental knowledge. Finally the most striking result is / although respondents have at least moderate level of environmental knowledge / there exist a statistically significant negative correlation between respondents&rsquo / environmental knowledge and their behavior.

Disclosing new worlds? : strategic management, styles and meaningHancocks, Matthew A. January 2017 (has links)
The philosopher Martin Heidegger argued that the truthful life was at risk of being lost in Western technological culture in the name of increasing control, efficiency, and agility. As the risk is actualised, so the human essence as truth maker is obscured and life itself feels poorer. This thesis draws on Heideggerian philosophy to demonstrate the loss in two dominant styles of contemporary strategic management: the world-picturing and, more recent, agile style. It builds a theory of post-agile strategic practice, which I call adaptive, to address this loss. Consistent with Heideggerian philosophy, I utilise a transformative disclosure methodology and a literary, paradigmatic case reading method to address the questions: Why is agile strategic management so unsatisfying? How do Heideggerian scholars shed light on this dissatisfaction? How do Heideggerians understand the emerging style and what strategic management practices can I propose for the future? After introducing agile strategic management and the impoverishment of life that it fosters, I set out how Heidegger’s philosophy of truth, thinking, and the sacred both sheds light on the problem and suggests a remedy for it. I closely read paradigmatic texts of the world-picturing and agile strategic management styles to demonstrate how business strategy theorisation lines up with extraordinary closeness to Heidegger’s philosophical assessment. I then analyse three Heideggerian prototypes for an adaptive style of strategy practice, concentrating on one paradigmatic text to identify their principal weakness: the omission of the sacred. I illustrate and contrast paradigmatic cases of both the agile and adaptive styles drawn from the beer industry and draw on the adaptive case to construct a theory of adaptive strategy practice, which addresses the problem of the loss of truth, suggesting pedagogical and strategic management practices. I conclude by summarising its findings and contributions, noting some limitations and connections to other studies and suggesting further lines of research.

Previous issue date: 2018-05-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The Bj-PRO-7a, a heptapeptide isolated and identified from Bothrops jararaca (Bj) venom, evoke
potent therapeutic effects, as antihypertensive effect, natriuretic and diuretic effects, promotion of
angiogenisis and vasodilatation. The effects of heptapeptide are independent of Angiotensin
Converting Inhibitor (ACE), possibly dependent of Muscarinic Receptors subtype 1 (M1R)
activation and oxido nitric pathways. Also, the Bj-PRO-7a actions upon central nervous system
still need to be evaluated. Thus, the aims of this study were: i) to assess the effects of acute
administration of Bj-PRO-7a upon behavior; ii) to reveal mechanisms involved in the effects of Bj-
PRO-7a upon locomotion/exploration, anxiety and depression-like behaviors. For this purpose,
adult male Wistar (WT) and Spontaneous Hypertensive Rats (SHRs) (300-380 g) received i.p.
injections of Vehicle (NaCl 0.9%), Diazepam (2 mg/kg), Imipramine (15 mg/kg), Bj-PRO-7a (71,
213 or 426 nmol/kg), Pirenzepine (852 nmol/kg), α-metil-DL-tirosina (200 mg/kg) or
Chlorpromazine (2 mg/kg) and were placed in the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM), Open Field (OF)
and Forced Swimming (FS) tests. The heptapeptide promoted anxiolytic and antidepressantlike
effects and increased the locomotion/exploration. These effects of Bj-PRO-7a seem to be strongly
dependent on activation of M1R, catecholaminergic paths and dopaminergic receptors.
machos adultos Wistar (WT) e Espontaneamente Hipertensos (SHR) (300-380 g) receberam
injeções i.p. de Veículo (NaCl 0,9%), Diazepam (2 mg/kg), Imipramina (15 mg/kg), Bj-PRO-7a
(71, 213 ou 426 nmol/kg), Pirenzepina (852 nmol/kg), α-metil-DL-tirosina (200 mg/kg) ou
Clorpromazina (2 mg/kg) e foram colocados nos testes de Labirinto em Cruz Elevado (LCE);
Campo Aberto (CA) e Nado Forçado (NF). O heptapeptídeo promoveu efeito tipo-ansiolítico e
antidepressivo e aumentou a locomoção/exploração. Esses efeitos parecem ser fortemente
dependentes da ativação dos M1Rs, vias catecolaminérgicas e receptores dopaminérgicos.
