The Good Cut: The Barbershop in the African American Literary Tradition

Bozeman, Terry Sinclair 28 May 2009 (has links)
Few African American males do not have at least one memory of a barbershop. The barbershop is a space that finds a home in virtually every community in which you find Black males. To some degree, virtually all genres and periods of African American literary expression have situated the barbershop as a mediating space in the formulation of a Black masculine identity. The barbershop as mediating space allows Black males the opportunity to view themselves and also critique the ways in which they are gazed upon by the literary imagination. African American authors, through the use of the barbershop, bring to the center the construction of this space in Black masculinity identity formation. ¬ Although a common presence in African American literature, the barbershop has not received any serious, i.e. book length examinations in literary analysis. I argue that the historical portrayal of the barbershop as mediating space problematizes the intersections of ancestor, culture, history, memory and literary imagination to reveal the intricate relationship between Black males and the space. I seek to address the gap in coverage of the literary treatment of the African American barbershop as mediating structure in the formulation of a black masculine identity. My research will show that we cannot fully understand the literary formation of Black masculine identity unless we attend to the barbershop as a formative mediating space.

Etnografando as barbearias da cidade : um estudo antropológico sobre o trabalho e memória no mundo urbano de Porto Alegre (RS) / Ethnographying the barber shops in town: An anthropolical study of work and memory in the town of Porto Alegre (RS)

Soares, Pedro Paulo de Miranda Araújo January 2012 (has links)
This work is an anthropological study of the memory of an urban professial class, the barbers of Porto Alegre. Here I intend to discuss aspects of knowledge and pratice of the profession including the process of learning the craft and the social networks of entering the profession. Also, I dedicate myself to the analysis of forms of sociability that take place in these barber shops, which helps in understanding how the interlocutors of this research live their wokspace, as well as consider relevant to the ethnographic process the narratives that professional barbers build to create a sense of belonging to the urban landscape.

J.-C. : l'archive des Gallābu / Study of an archive of a nobility familyfrom the city of Ur from the 4th to the 6th century BC : the Gallabu archive

Popova, Olga 28 June 2018 (has links)
This work presents the first complete and annotated edition of the texts from the Gallabu family archive, from the city of Ur in southern Babylonia. It is a family of prebendaries-barbers that left the longest known private archive in the first century BC. Documents of the archive cover over 260 years and include Neo-Babylonian, Achaemenid, and Hellenistic periods. The thesis provides an insight into the nature of the Gallabu archive and examines the history of the family and its heritage. The family of Gallabu is considered within a political and socio-economic context in order to study different aspects of the socio-economic life of the urban elite of the city of Ur in the first millennium BC, the second most important city in southern Babylonia at the time.

O ofício de barbeiro : memória, tradições e modernidades

Teles, Eduardo Lopes 20 November 2012 (has links)
The Thesis s theme is part of the artificers barbers history that act in the Center District, in Aracaju. The analysis, which covers the period between the 1940 s and the present days, aims to show how is the transition from male order and crafts (represented by barbers) to unisex order and the professions (represented by hairdressers). Through the field observation and the interviews recorded in Oral History, considerations are made about the meaning of the discourse of crisis in the work and the idealization of the past by the barbers, related by him to the theme of the city s modernization. The crisis of the barbers is motivated by the Masculine Symbolic Domination crisis, as it is called by Pierre Bourdieu (1999), and the current situation of the world of work characterized by job insecurity and labor relations and unemployment (CASTEL, 1998; AUED, 1999; SENNETT, 2009).
