The gender of belief: Women and Christianity in T. S. Eliot and Djuna Barnes / Women and Christianity in T. S. Eliot and Djuna BarnesPollard, Jacqueline Anne 09 1900 (has links)

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation considers the formal and thematic camaraderie between T. S. Eliot and Djuna Barnes. The Waste Land 's poet, whom critics often cite as exemplary of reactionary high modernism, appears an improbable companion to Nightwood 's novelist, who critics, such as Shari Benstock, characterize as epitomizing "Sapphic modernism." However, Eliot and Barnes prove complementary rather than antithetical figures in their approaches to the collapse of historical and religious authority. Through close readings, supplemented by historical and literary sources, I demonstrate how Eliot, in his criticism and poems such as "Gerontion," and Barnes, in her trans-generic novel Nightwood , recognize the instability of history as defined by man and suggest the necessity of mythmaking to establish, or confirm, personal identity. Such mythmaking incorporates, rather than rejects, traditional Christian signs. I examine how, in Eliot's poems of the 1920s and in Barnes's novel, these writers drew on Christian symbols to evoke a nurturing, intercessory female parallel to the Virgin Mary to investigate the hope for redemption in a secular world. Yet Eliot and Barnes arrive at contrary conclusions. Eliot's poems increasingly relate femininity to Christian transcendence; this corresponds with a desire to recapture a unified sensibility, which, Eliot argued, dissolved in the post-Reformation era. In contrast, Barnes's Jewish and homosexual characters find transcendence unattainable. As embodied in her novel's characters, the Christian feminine ideal fails because the idealization itself extends from exclusionary dogma; any aid it promises proves ineffectual, and the novel's characters, including Dr. Matthew O'Connor and Nora Flood, remain locked in temporal anguish. Current trends in modernist studies consider the role of myth in understanding individuals' creation of self or worldview; this perspective applies also in analyzing religion's role insofar as it aids the individual's search for identity and a place in history. Consequently, this dissertation helps to reinvigorate the discussion of religion's significance in a literary movement allegedly defined by its secularism. Moreover, in presenting Eliot and Barnes together, I reveal a kinship suggested by their deployment of literary history, formal innovation, and questions about religion's value. This thesis posits post-humanism as a philosophy that engages directly with the problem of anthropocentrism and is concerned primarily with the metaphysics of subjectivity. It studies five literary texts (James Joyce's Ulysses, Virginia Woolf's Flush, Djuna Barnes' Nightwood, Brigid Brophy's Hackenfeller's Ape and J.M. Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello: Eight Lessons) that challenge the humanistic or classical subject through critical engagement with what this subject traditionally saw as its antithesis - the animal. These texts contest various fixed assumptions about animality and disrupt the status-quo of the human. Breaking with the tradition that treats animals exclusively as a metaphor for the human, they attempt to see and understand animality outside the framework of anthropocentric suppositions. This project aims to describe the strategies these texts employ to conceptualize animality as well as the methods they apply to delineate its subversive potential and to disrupt the human- animal binary. Its theoretical framework combines the work of thinkers belonging to the new but thriving field of Animal Studies with the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The Gendering of Death Personifications in Literary Modernism: The Femme Fatale Symbol from Baudelaire to BarnesMcNally, Amanda 01 December 2019 (has links)
The time of modernity, defined here as 1850-1940, contributed to massive changes in the representation of the feminine in literature. Societal paradigm shifts due to industrialism, advances in science, psychology, and a newfound push for gender equality brought transformation to the Western World. As a result of this, male frustrations revived the ancient trope of the femme fatale, but the modern woman—already hungry for agency, tired of maligned representation in heinous portrayals of skeletons, sirens, and beasts—saw a symbol begging for redemption rather than the intended insult. Women of the nineteenth century infused texture to a two-dimensional accusation that argued the only good female sexuality was one that could be contained. The redemption of the femme fatale is traced in this thesis through Charles Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil (1857), Gabrielle D’Annunzio’s The Triumph of Death (1901), and Djuna Barnes’s Nightwood (1936).

The main topic of this thesis is the implementation and subsequent optimization of high performance applications on a cluster of Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. Using two approaches to solve the N-Body problem, the possibilities of the program execution on a cluster of processors, coprocessors or both device types have been demonstrated. Two particular versions of the N-Body problem have been chosen - the naive and Barnes-hut. Both problems have been implemented and optimized. For better comparison of the achieved results, we only considered achieved acceleration against single node runs using processors only. In the case of the naive version a 15-fold increase has been achieved when using combination of processors and coprocessors on 8 computational nodes. The performance in this case was 9 TFLOP/s. Based on the obtained results we concluded the advantages and disadvantages of the program execution in the distributed environments using processors, coprocessors or both.

In der Z-Boson-Resonanzphysik sind mehrere Präzisionsobservablen in einem perfekten Zustand, bei dem die theoretische Unsicherheit niedriger ist als die gegenwärtige experimentelle Unsicherheit.
Das Konzept für den zukünftigen Teilchenbeschleuniger Future Circular Collider (FCC), will eine Verbesserung der Messungen für die Präzisionsobservablen um ein bis zwei signifikante Stellen erreichen.
Damit werden die Vorhersagen des elektroschwachen Standardmodells in eine Situation versetzt, in der vollständige Zweischleifenkorrekturen zusammen mit den führenden Dreischleifenkorrekturen obligatorisch werden.
2016 wurden die vollständigen Zweischleifenkorrekturen für den effektiven schwachen Mischungswinkel für die bottom Quarks sin^2/theta/^b_eff berechnet, indem die fehlenden bosonischen Zweischleifenkorrekturen bereitgestellt wurden.
Dabei liegt die Schwierigkeit in der Berechnung der entsprechenden Zwei-Schleifen Vertex-Feynman-Integrale, die mehrere massive Teilchen einschließen.
Gegenwärtig ist die analytische Rechnung der meisten dieser Integrale schwierig und deswegen werden rein numerische Techniken, mittels Sektorzerlegungsansatz und der Integralansatz nach Mellin-Barnes, angewandt.
Es war bis vor kurzem nicht bekannt, wie Mellin-Barnes-Integraldarstellungen in den minkowskischen Integrationsgebieten numerisch behandelt werden können.
Um dieses Problem anzugehen, stellen wir eine Vielzahl von ein- und mehrdimensionaler Techniken vor, die ein Teil des neuen Programms MBnumerics.m sind, welches in dieser Dissertation entwickelt wurde.
Der Sektorzerlegungsansatz und der Integralansatz nach Mellin-Barnes sind zusammen ausreichend, um elektroschwache Zweischleifenkorrekturen für die Präzisionsobservablen der Annihilation von e^+e^- in zwei Fermionen in der Z-Bosonresonanz auszurechnen.
Aktuell führt dies zu der genauesten Vorhersage für den effektiven elektroschwachen Mischungswinkel für bottom Quarks sin^2/theta/^b_eff = 0.232312. / In the Z-boson resonance physics several precision observables are in a perfect state, where the theory uncertainty is lower than the present experimental uncertainty.
The ambitious concepts for the future collider, Future Circular Collider (FCC), aim for an improvement of measurements for the precision observables by one to two significant digits.
This will put the Electroweak Standard Model predictions in a situation where complete two-loop corrections together with the leading three-loop corrections will become mandatory.
The complete two-loop corrections for effective weak mixing angle for bottom quarks sin^2/theta/^b_eff were reported recently, by providing the missing bosonic two-loop corrections.
The difficult task in this computation is the calculation of the corresponding two-loop vertex Feynman integrals which include several massive particles.
At present the analytic evaluation for most of these integrals is out of reach and purely numerical techniques were applied.
Only two methods, sector decomposition approach and the Mellin-Barnes integral approach, are known to extract infrared and ultraviolet singularities in a systematic way for a general Feynman integral with fully automatized algorithms.
It was not known until recently how to treat Mellin-Barnes integral representations in Minkowskian regions numerically. To address this problem we introduce and discuss in detail a variety of one- and multi-dimensional techniques, which are part of a new program MBnumerics.m developed in this thesis work.
Two techniques, sector decomposition and Mellin-Barnes integral approach, are together sufficient to treat electroweak two-loop corrections to the precision observables for the e^+e^- annihilation into two fermions at the Z-boson resonance.
This leads to the most precise prediction at present for the effective weak mixing angle for bottom quarks: sin^2/theta/^b_eff=0.232312.

Comme beaucoup d’autres romans historiques postmodernes, Une histoire du monde en 10 chapitres et ½ de Julian Barnes et Cartographie des nuages de David Mitchell misent en fiction une vision personnelle sur l’histoire et examinent la relation entre les narrations historiques et les fictions. Outre ces projets metahistoriques et metafictionnels, les deux romans proposent un récit historique original de la vie humaine sur la terre. Les narrations de Barnes et de Mitchell s’étendent sur des milliers d’années et sont caractérisées, à tour de role, par la continuité et par la discontinuité. Celle-ci est déterminées par une série de catastrophes, soit naturelles soit liées aux activités humaines, qui donnent aux diverses histoires constituant les romans une puissante note dystopique. Apart from these metahistorical and metafictional projects, the two novels put forward an original historical account of human life on earth. Barnes’s and Mitchell’s narratives span millennia and are marked by the interplay of continuity and discontinuity. The latter is shaped by a series of natural and man-made catastrophes, which account for the dystopian character of the various stories that make up the two novels. Barnes and Mitchell have a very practical reason for choosing the dystopian mode: a world in crisis, and especially a world near its end or near its beginning, is a phenomenon that can be more readily analyzed as both a fragment of history and a small-scale version of history as a whole. A histopia is a piece of fiction that uses various moments of crisis, fictional or fictionalized, as episodes of a fragmentary history of the world.
