This work explains how basketry´s confection is related to cosmogonic myths and the spiritual world. We investigate the meaning of these objects in cosmology, in the feminine ritual of initiation and how its meaning changed for paumari people. Our hypothesis is the basketry express deep symbols of mythology and imaginary . We use diferents techniques of research, as interviews, participant comment and myth analysis. Eliade (1963), Godelier (2001), Ribeiro (1995) and Ricoeur (2007) are authors who inspire the writing of this work. This thesis also presents a significant sample of patterns of paumari basketry and analyses on mythology, imaginary and the artistic production of this people / O objeto da pesquisa é a cestaria do povo indígena Paumari, que vive na região do Rio Purus, no Amazonas, Brasil.
O trabalho explica como a cestaria, cuja confecção está relacionada aos mitos cosmogônicos e ao mundo espiritual, é significada nas comunidades.
Investigamos o sentido dos objetos de palha na cosmologia, no ritual de iniciação feminino e a significação atribuída a eles, pelos paumari que se converteram à religião evangélica.
Nossa hipótese é de que a cestaria expressa símbolos profundos relacionados à mitologia e ao imaginário.
Realizamos estudo de caso, técnicas de pesquisa como entrevistas, observação participante e análise de mitos. Eliade (1963), Godelier (2001), Ribeiro (1995) e Ricoeur (2007) são autores que inspiraram a escritura deste trabalho.
Esta tese apresenta uma amostra significativa de grafismos paumari e também análises sobre a mitologia, o imaginário e a produção artística deste povo

Because of a demonstrable need, there should be a course for the study of Appalachian art in the high school curriculum. This study is a proposal for the study of traditional Appalachian art and its importance to the promotion and preservation of the arts and crafts in the Appalachian region.
This course consists of background information on selected traditional Appalachian art, contact and interaction with local artists and craftspeople, and student hands-on experience in the art forms considered. Detailed unit and lesson plans are included in the following areas: Spinning and Weaving, Dyeing, Basketry, Quilting, Pottery, Woodcarving, Blacksmithing, Vernacular Architecture, and Handmade Instruments of Country Music.
This course has been taught by the writer at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee, and was enthusiastically received by both students and members of the community.

Navajo Baskets and the American Indian Voice: Searching for the Contemporary Native American in the Trading Post, the Natural History Museum, and the Fine Art MuseumHowe, Laura Paulsen 18 July 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines the display of Navajo baskets and examines some of the possible meanings Navajo baskets can reveal. Acknowledging that the meaning of a work of art changes when it is placed in different environments, the thesis explores what meanings are revealed and what meanings are concealed in basket displays in three venues: the trading post, the natural history museum, and the fine art museum. The study concludes that the fine art museum has the most potential to foster a dialogue about the contemporary Navajo, whose identity is a product of continuity and change. Chapter one discusses the basket's connotation as one of continuity and change, a meaning essential to understanding the contemporary Navajo. It becomes clear that when looking for the meaning of tradition and adaptation, the institutional utterance of an exhibition venue must be one that allows a complex modern Navajo identity to emerge. Chapter two examines the institutional utterance of the trading post. In such a setting, meanings of a mythical past emerge from the basket. The environment of the trading post reveals a romantic view of the Old West that hides the meaning of the contemporary Navajo from patrons and viewers. Chapter three focuses on the natural history museum and the effects of its institutional utterance on the Navajo basket's significance. In this learning environment, the Navajo basket acts as an artifact and meanings emerge about Navajo ritual and history. However, natural history museums often educate audiences through means like curiosity cabinets and living history displays that distance the contemporary Navajo. It is the fine art museum that has the most potential to reveal the adaptive, contemporary Navajo, discussed in chapter four. Art museums validate baskets as art objects when they exhibit them with Western painting and sculpture. Such displays can hide the contemporary Navajo in a discussion of formal elements. However, when an art museum exhibits a basket as a meaningful object, it allows the basket to reveal the Dine's desire for cultural continuity and the long Navajo history of adapting to changing environments.

La vannerie en Bretagne n’avait pas à ce jour fait l’objet d’un travail d’ensemble. Elle y présente des singularités techniques et une grande diversité de types. Toutes les familles de vannerie sont présentes sur la zone d’étude. Les types définis « en matériaux élastiques » (bourdaine, osier, châtaignier) sont pour la première fois décrits dans leur ensemble et mis en perspective. Lors de la recherche, un corpus de plus d’une centaine d’objets, vanneries et outils, a été réuni. Le travail met en évidence l’existence de vanneries natives dont le périmètre géographique et des hypothèses quant à leur dynamique de diffusion ont été définis. Dans le cadre de cette étude, il a été élaboré un modèle classificatoire à vocation universelle prenant en compte la relation qu’entretient le fabricant avec le matériau. Le mode d’expertise s’est appuyé sur les doubles compétences techniques et universitaires de l’auteur. Des prolégomènes permettent de faire un point épistémologique et précisent les différentes traditions classificatoires de ce domaine technique. Par ailleurs, dans une démarche interdisciplinaire, les cartographies produites peuvent contribuer à la connaissance et la délimitation d’aires culturelles. Une présentation des matériaux utilisés dans cette région est détaillée en annexe. Elle met en exergue l’importance de la bourdaine dont l’usage régresse au profit de l’osier. / Basketry in Brittany has never been the prior subject of comprehensive study. Breton basketry exhibits both unique techniques and a great diversity of forms. Every family of basketry technique is represented within the study area. The types defined as “made of flexible materials” (buckthorn, wicker, chestnut) are for the first time here described in their entirety and put into perspective. In the course of research, a corpus of more than 100 objects, baskets and tools, was assembled. This study records the existence of native basket weaving traditions, for which the geographical boundaries are described, and hypotheses about the dynamics for their diffusion are defined. In the course of this study, a classification model has been developed for universal application, taking into account the relation of the basket weaver to the material. The author of this thesis draws on his double expertise as a craftsman and an academic researcher. The prolegomena permit epistemological synthesis and specify the different classification schools in this technical domain. Additionally, in interdisciplinary inquiry, the maps contribute to the recognition and the boundary definition of cultural exchange areas. A presentation of materials used in basketry in this region is detailed in the annex. It highlights the importance of the use of buckthorn, which has regressed, while the use of wicker has proportionally risen.

Previous issue date: 2012-12-07 / FAPEAM - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / The source for this study was the practice of the Ticuna artisans women while making the pacará baskets. The ethnography presented here was produced by the Ticuna artisans women from two distinct regions in the state of Amazonas: one by the upper Solimões river, in three communities that make up the Santo Antonio Indigenous community and in the Barro Vermelho community, and, in Manaus, by some Ticuna artisans women who live in the capital. It is a record of the Ticuna women’s practice, made by monitoring the baskets making process, since the moments prior to the weaving activity (harvesting, drying, dyeing), until the connections that such activity establish in social life and in their cultural prescriptions. Along the way, I identified counting processes, forms of material selection, methods used to measure, among other features observed in the making of baskets and that are in the categories of understanding. It shows how much artisans' practice is representative and how much it highlights the place of women in their society, either because of their prestige in the way today's communities closest to the cities are organized, or due to their authority as having the knowledge of the Ticuna ritual practices. The drawings in the pacará baskets were identified and classified as a sign, and its meanings attributed by the Ticunas, considering the combination of the different manifestations that these representations appear in ritual practices and artifacts. Finally, we make an overview of the communities surveyed and the network that revolves around the practice of women, implying aspects of culture, social life and interaction with the surrounding society. / O fio condutor do presente estudo foi a prática das artesãs Ticuna na construção dos cestos pacará. A etnografia aqui apresentada foi produzida junto a mulheres artesãs Ticuna de duas regiões distintas do Amazonas: a do Alto Solimões, nas três comunidades que compõem a Terra Indígena Santo Antônio e na comunidade Barro Vermelho, e em Manaus, com algumas artesãs Ticuna residentes na capital. Trata-se de
um registro da prática das mulheres, feito a partir do acompanhamento do processo de confecção dos cestos, desde os momentos que antecedem a atividade de tecer (colher, secar, tingir), até as conexões que, a partir dessa atividade, estabelecem-se na vida social e nas prescrições da cultura. Nesse percurso, identifiquei processos de contagem, formas de seleção do material, modos utilizados para medir, dentre outros aspectos observados na construção dos cestos e que são relativos às categorias de entendimento.
Demonstra-se como a prática das artesãs é representativa na sua sociedade e destaca o lugar da mulher, seja por seu prestígio nas formas como hoje se organizam nas comunidades mais próximas das cidades, seja por sua autoridade como detentora de um conhecimento das práticas rituais dos Ticuna. Procedeu-se à identificação e classificação dos grafismos constituintes do cesto pacará, na sua condição de signo, verificando suas conexões com os significados atribuídos pelos Ticuna, considerando a combinação das diferentes manifestações em que essas representações aparecem, nas práticas rituais e nos artefatos. Por fim, tecemos um panorama das comunidades pesquisadas e da rede que se estende em torno da prática das mulheres, implicando aspectos da cultura, da vida social e do convívio com a sociedade envolvente.

The thesis focuses on basket weaving in art education in an environmental context. In the theoretical part, the diploma thesis deals with nature and its origins for art education. It clarifies the concepts of environment, ecology and contemporary art in relation to traditional crafts. It also deals with the relationship between craft and applied art. The goal of the theoretical part is to deeply understand these concepts and contexts. It also represents the artwork of contemporary artists and free-form artists who deal with the theme of nature. The theoretical basis is based on authors own artwork, capturing the observation of nature and the growth of willow rods with as little human intervention as possible. The result of the author's work is the Willow Diary, which records this observation of the willow rods in nature. Authors own artwork is inspired by existing artwork in nature with natural materials. The didactic part of the thesis contains art tasks based on the theoretical part of the thesis. Tasks are focused on environmental education, spatial creation, contact with nature and natural materials. The aim of the artistic tasks is to raise pupils' interest for nature and to familiarize them with the techniques of basket weaving while introducing them to the themes of environmental education....
