Barcelos, Mariana Müller January 2016 (has links)
Attracting users to public transport and maintaining the ones that already use it is essential to fostering more sustainable cities. Therefore, improving the quality of bus transit systems and considering the users’ vision becomes relevant. Benchmarking is a recognized quality management tool that allows comparing systems, identifying references to good practices and promoting exchanges of experience. Aligning benchmarking process and users’ satisfaction of public transport have great potential to become the management more focused and effective to the needs and desires of the users. However, comparing the perception of users of different systems results in several challenges due the lack of standardization of data collection, subjectivity and socio cultural biases. This study proposes the application of three methods aiming to overcome these challenges and to allow benchmarking analysis with users’ satisfaction data of different cities. The first analysis consists in normalizing satisfaction scores to reduce social and cultural biases. The second one applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to identify efficient transport systems in users’ view. The third one consists in using clusters analysis to identify relations between users’ profiles and their respective satisfaction in different cities. The methods are adequate for comparing systems, allowing goals identification, priorities, benchmarks and understanding of different audiences’ particularities. The analyses present different degrees of application complexity and data collection. Each method provides a distinct view from available data, which allows defining benchmarks and assist in improvements guidelines.

Mariane Perin da Silva Comerlatto 02 March 2016 (has links)
The clinical benchmarks of development allow professionals become acquainted with following the development of hearing and language abilities and signaled for the family when there is some standard deviation expected for the child\'s development. The aim of this research was to determine the clinical benchmarks of development of auditory and spoken language abilities, from the analysis of the first five years of CI used by children implanted before 36 months; and investigate the influence age of implantation in the development of the aforementioned abilities. METHODS: Retrospective longitudinal study accomplished in Section Cochlear Implants - Center for Audiological Research (CPA-HRAC / USP). Were part of the sample 230 children, which, for comparative analysis, were divided into three groups: implanted before 18 months, between 19 and 24 months, between 25 and 36 months of age. The procedures analyzed were: Infant-Toddler: Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS), the Meaningful Use of Speech Scale (MUSS) and Categories of Auditory and Language. The collected data were analyzed by means of descriptive and inductive statistics. RESULTS: During the first five years of CI use, were analyzed nine returns of children to the Center. From the median analysis, up to the 30 ± 3 months of using the electronic device most part of the sample reached 100% in IT-MAIS, when the attentions abilities and allotment of meanings to sounds have already been overcome. Until the 68 ± 6 months most of children reached the highest percentage in the MUSS and the maximum score in the Auditory and Language Categories, in other words, children showed the usage of spontaneous speech and communication strategies in their routine, as well as exposed the auditory recognition abilities in open set and the oral language fluency, respectively. When comparing the groups\' performances in the auditory assessments there wasn\'t a standard of statistical significance and in the speech assessments the results were significantly better for the children implanted after 18 months in the early returns. There were strong correlations between the results of Scales and Categories. CONCLUSIONS: Children of the sample developed progressively auditory and spoken language abilities over the first five years of CI use. It was possible to determine the clinical benchmark of development for Scales and Categories studied. From them, the professionals who monitoring the child in the auditory habilitation process, can steer the family, as well as other professionals that work with the child, as to the results expected in the IT-MAIS, the MUSS and in the Auditory and Language Categories. In addition, it was possible to identify that, even if there is a restriction as the possible variables that could interfere in the determination of clinical benchmarks, there were patients with deviant results, implying the importance of defining the benchmarks for, along with the family, the professional discuss and find other variables that may influence on the poor performance of children. The implantation within the sensitive period of development may explain the auditory behavior of the groups compared. Now, when analyzing the spoken language, it is believed that there was the influence of other variables in the auditory habilitation process and not just the implantation during the critical period

Energy-efficient Benchmarking for Energy-efficient Software

Pukhkaiev, Dmytro 14 January 2016 (has links)
With respect to the continuous growth of computing systems, the energy-efficiency requirement of their processes becomes even more important. Different configurations, implying different energy-efficiency of the system, could be used to perform the process. A configuration denotes the choice among different hard- and software settings (e.g., CPU frequency, number of threads, the concrete algorithm, etc.). The identification of the most energy-efficient configuration demands to benchmark all configurations. However, this benchmarking is time- and energy-consuming, too. This thesis explores (a) the effect of dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) in combination with dynamic concurrency throttling (DCT) on the energy consumption of (de)compression, DBMS query executions, encryption/decryption and sorting; and (b) a generic approach to reduce the benchmarking efforts to determine the optimal configuration. Our findings show that the utilization of optimal configurations can save wavg. 15.14% of energy compared to the default configuration. Moreover, we propose a generic heuristic (fractional factorial design) that utilizes data mining (adaptive instance selection) together with machine learning techniques (multiple linear regression) to decrease benchmarking effort by building a regression model based on the smallest feasible subset of the benchmarked configurations. Our approach reduces the energy consumption required for benchmarking by 63.9% whilst impairing the energy-efficiency of performing the computational process by only 1.88 pp, due to not using the optimal but a near-optimal configuration.

Performance Analysis of Complex Shared Memory Systems

Molka, Daniel 10 March 2017 (has links)
Systems for high performance computing are getting increasingly complex. On the one hand, the number of processors is increasing. On the other hand, the individual processors are getting more and more powerful. In recent years, the latter is to a large extent achieved by increasing the number of cores per processor. Unfortunately, scientific applications often fail to fully utilize the available computational performance. Therefore, performance analysis tools that help to localize and fix performance problems are indispensable. Large scale systems for high performance computing typically consist of multiple compute nodes that are connected via network. Performance analysis tools that analyze performance problems that arise from using multiple nodes are readily available. However, the increasing number of cores per processor that can be observed within the last decade represents a major change in the node architecture. Therefore, this work concentrates on the analysis of the node performance. The goal of this thesis is to improve the understanding of the achieved application performance on existing hardware. It can be observed that the scaling of parallel applications on multi-core processors differs significantly from the scaling on multiple processors. Therefore, the properties of shared resources in contemporary multi-core processors as well as remote accesses in multi-processor systems are investigated and their respective impact on the application performance is analyzed. As a first step, a comprehensive suite of highly optimized micro-benchmarks is developed. These benchmarks are able to determine the performance of memory accesses depending on the location and coherence state of the data. They are used to perform an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of memory accesses in contemporary multi-processor systems, which identifies potential bottlenecks. However, in order to localize performance problems, it also has to be determined to which extend the application performance is limited by certain resources. Therefore, a methodology to derive metrics for the utilization of individual components in the memory hierarchy as well as waiting times caused by memory accesses is developed in the second step. The approach is based on hardware performance counters, which record the number of certain hardware events. The developed micro-benchmarks are used to selectively stress individual components, which can be used to identify the events that provide a reasonable assessment for the utilization of the respective component and the amount of time that is spent waiting for memory accesses to complete. Finally, the knowledge gained from this process is used to implement a visualization of memory related performance issues in existing performance analysis tools. The results of the micro-benchmarks reveal that the increasing number of cores per processor and the usage of multiple processors per node leads to complex systems with vastly different performance characteristics of memory accesses depending on the location of the accessed data. Furthermore, it can be observed that the aggregated throughput of shared resources in multi-core processors does not necessarily scale linearly with the number of cores that access them concurrently, which limits the scalability of parallel applications. It is shown that the proposed methodology for the identification of meaningful hardware performance counters yields useful metrics for the localization of memory related performance limitations.
