The Ghosts of Horseshoe Bend: Myth, Memory, and the Making of a National Battlefield

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This research explores the various and often conflicting interpretations of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, an event seemingly lost in the public mind of twenty-first century America. The conflict, which pitted United States forces under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson against a militant offshoot of the Creek Confederacy, known as the Redsticks, ranks as the single most staggering loss of life in annals of American Indian warfare. Today, exactly 200 years after the conflict, the legacy of Horseshoe Bend stands as an obscure and often unheard of event. Drawing upon over two centuries of unpublished archival data, newspapers, and political propaganda this research argues that the dominate narrative of Northern history, the shadowy details of the War of 1812, and the erasure of shameful events from the legacy of westward expansion have all contributed to transform what once was a battle of epic proportions, described by Jackson himself as an "extermination," into a seemingly forgotten affair. Ultimately, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend's elusiveness has allowed for the production of various historical myths and political messages, critiques and hyperboles, facts and theories. Hailed as a triumph during the War of 1812, and a high-water mark by the proponents of Manifest Destiny, Jackson's victory has also experienced its fair share of American derision and disregard. Whereas some have criticized the battle as a "cold blooded massacre," others have glorified it as a touchstone of American masculinity, and excused it as a natural event in the unfolding of human evolution. Despite the battle's controversial nature, on 3 August 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a strong supporter of the National Park Service, approved act HR 11766 establishing Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, the very first national park in the state of Alabama. Hailed and forgotten, silenced and celebrated, exploited and yet largely unknown. This research explores what happened after the smoke cleared at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. It is a story about the production of history, the power of the past, and the malleability of the American mind. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.A. History 2014

Avaliação das propriedades mecânicas de ossos de coelhas submetidas à administração de glicocorticóides / Evaluation of mechanical properties of the bone´s of rabbits induced glucocorticoid administration

Célio Anderson da Silva Junior 26 August 2003 (has links)
Corticoteroids are used in many clinical conditions because they present strong anti-inflammatory and imunessupressor activities. But, at the same time, they can cause many metabolic alterations and side effects mainly when there is prolonged. In the present research we studied the possible alterations caused by steroids on the mechanical properties of lamellar and trabecular bone of rabbits. The mechanical properties were assessed by bending tests performed on intact femurs and tibial as well as in samples of cortical bone. Compression tests were performed in L5 vertebral. Thirty-seven female rabbits were randomly distributes in one experimental group (EG-animals) and control (CG animals). Such groups were divided into four subgroups: two experimentals and two controls. The experimental animals received 2mg/kg/day of methylprednisolone (Solumedron ® ) during three weeks. The control animals received the same volume of intramuscular injections of saline, once a day, during three weeks. From the load x deformation curves the load and deflexion were obtained at the yielding point. The ultimate load as well as resilience were also obtained for the intact bones. When the specimens were analysed the ultimate tension was determined. The statisitical analyses did not show any difference between treated and untreated animals for the mechanical properties. But the treated animals showed a significant loose of body weight. We ful that such results require a deepening in the investigation.

In this case, they are called morning glory, and consists of an inlet followed by a shaft which joins a tunnel through a bend. The bend is a critical point in spillway sizing, therefore the flow deflects in this region and causes high pressures in the convex part of the bend and negative pressures in the concavous part. This paper cares for the experimental study to define a better geometry for the shaft spillway vertical bend. An experimental study has been carried out, using the spillway model of Paraitinga dam, which scale was 1:51,02, using new bend geometries, to evaluate pressures flow and air entrainment. The influence of the bend geometry has been noticed, and the new curves resulted in a more regular flow, that followed the trace of the curve, with smaller pressures in the convex part, besides a higher flow to submerge the spillway. Equations have been proposed to calculate air entrainment flow as a function of the average concentration of air. Through the experimental study to compare the different curves, one suggest the use of use clotóide curve, as a bend shaft / Doutorado / Recursos Hidricos / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

Variation in groundwater geochemistry and microbial communities in the High Plains aquifer system, south-central Kansas

Alexandria, Richard January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Geology / Matthew Kirk / Groundwater from the High Plains aquifer is vital for food production and a growing human population in the Great Plains region of the United States. Understanding how groundwater quality is changing in response to anthropogenic and natural processes is critical to effectively managing this resource. Our study considers variation in groundwater geochemistry in the Great Bend Prairie aquifer, a portion of the High Plains aquifer in southcentral Kansas. We collected samples during summer 2016 from 24 monitoring wells and compared our results to data collected previously from the same wells from 1979 to 1987. We sampled 13 wells screened in the upper portion of the aquifer (avg. depth 72 ft), 10 wells screened near the aquifer base (avg. depth 141 ft), and one well screened in underlying bedrock. Compared to initial samples, samples we collected tended to have higher total dissolved solids (TDS) and nitrate content, particularly those we collected from the upper aquifer. Compared to initial samples, TDS was 78 mg/L higher in samples we collected from the upper aquifer and 373 mg/L lower in samples we collected from the aquifer base on average. Nitrate exceeded the U.S. standard for public supplies of drinking water (10 mg/L as N) in seven of the samples we collected, compared to only two samples collected previously. Compared to previous samples, nitrate concentrations were 9.5 and 3.9 mg/L as N higher on average in samples collected from the upper aquifer and aquifer base, respectively. Based on a mixing analysis, variation in the salinity of our samples primarily reflects the dilution of natural Permian brines by freshwater recharge throughout the area. However, salinity decreases observed in four samples reflects flushing of initial oil brine contamination over time, salinity increases in two samples may be due to evapotranspiration, and salinity increases in two samples may reflect migration of oil-brine contamination towards the site. Stable nitrogen (15N/14N) and oxygen (18O/16O) isotope ratios in our samples primarily fall within the range typical of nitrification of ammonium-based fertilizers with potential contributions from manure or sewage. In our analysis of the microbial community, we observed groups capable of denitrification, including genera within Nitrospirae, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria. Despite their presence, our results demonstrate that water quality in the aquifer has degraded over the past 30 to 40 years due to nitrate accumulation.

Indian Diasporic Films as Quantum (Third) Spaces: A Curriculum of Cultural Translation

Ausman, Tasha January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines narrative articulations in the films Bend It Like Beckham, Bhaji on the Beach, and American Chai as a complicated conversation in relation to bicultural-identity construction in the Indian diaspora. Unpacking the way desi identities are managed in/as a quantum (third) space – one that is continuously shifting and deferred – the films exemplify how "desi" is a heterogeneous cultural "group" without a homeland from which to speak or to return. The narratives of these films are considered cultural translations that expose inter-generational culture-clashes in the spaces between Indian and Western cultures. Screenplay pedagogy was used as a methodology to (re)read analysis of the films, revealing the ways that different movies employ and reinscribe themes of the multicultural pastoral, the carnivalesque, and melodrama, respectively. This thesis concludes by opening up some of the places from which individuals enunciate their desi identities, including the possibilities for (self)reflection.

Zkušební zařízení pro zkoušení automobilových klimatizací / Test bend for vehicle air-conditioning testing

Andrýs, Jan January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this work was to design test bend for vehicle air-conditioning. This test bend should simulate interior of the car and the engine compartment. Electric motor is used to drive compressor in test bend. Air supplied to test bend is modified to extreme conditions and the volume of supplied air is the same as the car drove at 50 km/h. Main frame of test bend is made from aluminium profiles manufactured by Bosch Rexroth, which provides great modularity. Walls are made from insulated panels by ELCOM System, they have very good insulation and are strong so additional equipment can be installed inside. Construction design was made is SolidWorks with 3D models of test bend as output. Air-conditong parts which were used as samples are originally from Skoda Octavia II. For this vehicle were made calculations of heat loads. In conclusion is simple testing example for this test bend and although there are some examples for future measuring.

Effects of Infiltration Temperature, Time, and Gas Flow Rate on Material Properties of Carbon Infiltration Carbon Nanotubes

Sypherd, Shane Dirk 01 September 2019 (has links)
This work characterizes the material properties of carbon infiltrated carbon nanotube (CI- CNT) structures. The impacts of temperature, time, and hydrogen flow rates on the material prop- erties of modulus of elasticity and strength are examined and compared. Carbon infiltration levels are assessed through the use of SEM images to determine which parameters give the highest level of infiltration. Through the use of SEM, carbon capping is observed on samples infiltrated for longer times at 900 and 950◦ C, suggesting that the samples are not being infiltrated during the entire desired infiltration period at these temperatures. The highest material properties of modulus and strength were reached when infiltrating the carbon nanotube forests for 150 mins at 850◦ C with hydrogen flowing at 311 sccm (0.0115 m/s). With these parameters, a modulus of 20.4 GPa and strength of 289.8 MPa were attained. The poorest results were seen when the samples were infiltrated at 800◦ C, and is therefore not recommended as an infiltration temperature if high mod- ulus and strength are desired. Density is correlated to strength and modulus and it is seen that there is a strong correlation between higher strength and modulus with higher density.
