Making a place on earth : participation in creation and redemption through placemaking and the arts

Craft, Jennifer Allen January 2013 (has links)
This thesis will explore a theology of place and placemaking that is focused on the participatory role of humans in both creation and redemption, while suggesting the central and paradigmatic role of artistry in our construction of and identification with place. Building on the most recent theological and philosophical engagement with place, this thesis will argue for a theology of place that takes seriously the doctrines of creation and incarnation, focusing on a particularly redemptive understanding of placemaking in the material world. In its study of scripture and theology, it will focus on God's blessing of people to participate in the making of places, along with the role this human making has in relationship to divine presence and the divine plan for creation and redemption. After developing a theology of place and placemaking more generally, the second half of this thesis will consider the practical, constructive, and transformative capabilities of placemaking as witnessed through the arts. Relying on theological engagement with the arts, it will argue that artistic making of all kinds and attention to place go hand in hand. Exploring a selection of artistic genres, including the photography of Marlene Creates, the quilts of Gee's Bend, and the literature of Wendell Berry, this thesis will suggest that imaginative and “artistic” placemaking practices can give us a deeper understanding of the creative, redemptive, and transformative work of Christ in Creation, while also elucidating our calling to participate in it.

Structural analysis of bend stiffeners supported by finite elements.

Lima, Bruno Pereira 08 November 2018 (has links)
The present work does a static structural analysis of bend stiffeners - which consist of auxiliary structural components used in flexible lines in their connections with floating units in offshore oil production systems. The configuration of these fittings should give the installation a gradual variation of the flexural stiffness near the point of attachment of the flexible line to the floating unit, reducing its curvature and smoothing the field of stresses, thus avoiding that the line exceeds the maximum curvature established in design, in addition to guaranteeing a fatigue life equal to or greater than in other parts of the system. Initially a brief bibliographical review of several authors is presented, later the technology of rigging is presented along with the design methods. A summary of the materials used as well as their properties are described for a better understanding of the problem. The understanding of the mechanical response has become increasingly important considering the increasing number of bend stiffeners in the field and the failures that some have presented. In order to do so, this work develops models by the finite element method with different levels of hierarchy that represent the flexible line-bend stiffener system for a better perception of the mechanical behavior of the bend stiffeners.

3-D structural and seismic stratigraphic interpretation of the Guasare-Misoa Interval, VLE 196 Area, Block V, Lamar Field, Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela

Arzuman, Sadun 30 September 2004 (has links)
In this study, the structure, depositional system, and the seismic stratigraphy of the VLE 196 area, Block V in Lamar Field were interpreted using 3-D seismic data and well logs to characterize structural and depositional settings of the Guasare-Misoa interval. To demonstrate structural settings of the study area 3-D seismic data were interpreted. Three main seismic reflectors, which are the Late Eocene unconformity, Guasare, and La Luna formations, were picked. The most dominant structure in the area is the VLE 400 Fault which was interpreted as a left-lateral strike-slip reverse fault due to its behaviors as a reverse fault in cross sections and as a strike-slip fault in strike sections. The VLE 400 Fault subdivides the VLE 196 area into two main structural blocks, a downthrown block in the western part and the upthrown block in the eastern part of the field where the hydrocarbons were trapped. Several en echelon normal and reverse faults were located along the both sides of the area. The main importance of these faults are that they fractured the La Luna source rock and created migration pathways through the reservoir layers of the Misoa Formation. To interpret depositional system of the Guasare-Misoa interval, tops of the C4 and C5 intervals and associated C4 layers were picked based on well logs and lithofacies maps were prepared. The results of this part of the study show that the sandstones of the Misoa Formation are delta front and fluvial/distributary channel facies of delta system. The net sand thickness map of the C4 interval also exhibits southeast northwest contour patterns reflecting depositional axes in the area. Shaly units of the C4 interval interpreted as potential seals and are of variable thickness and extend. Seismic stratigraphic interpretation of the area shows that the four main seismic facies are dominant which mainly represent the recent sediments, "C" sands of the Misoa Formation, underlying Colon and Mito Juan shales, and basement respectively. Some distributary eroded channel fill structures were also observed within the Misoa Formation, but they were not continuous through the area because of the intensive faulting.

L'Influence des propriétés physiques et chimiques du biodiesel, Diesel et de leur mélange sur l’injection et le spray / The influence of physical properties of biodiesel, Diesel and their blended fuels on injection and spray

Tinprabath, Padipan 23 April 2015 (has links)
Biodiesel is a very interesting fuel because it is renewable, thus increasing energy security, it is environmentally friendly, and it has a higher cetane number and a lower sulfur and aromatic content than pure Diesel. The main disadvantages of biodiesel are its higher viscosity, lower energy content, higher cloud point and pour point, higher nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, lower power and high cost. However, many countries can produce their own biodiesel and blends with diesel fuel of 2–20%. The new Euro VI standards involve problems related to cold-start. To further our understanding of these mixtures, it is necessary to test a larger range of fuels with a biodiesel fraction of 10 to 50%, and under cold temperatures, no information is available in the literature, however, on the injection rate and spray penetration of Diesel–Biodiesel blends in cold conditions. The present thesis focuses on an experimental study of the Influence of physical and chemical properties of biodiesel, Diesel and their blended fuels on injection and spray for Diesel engine application. The originality of the approach concerns the definition of a fuel matrix (a total of 9 fuels) for which properties are varied by varying the percentage of biodiesel and the temperature. Moreover all the stages of Diesel injection are considered. Experiments were conducted in dedicated temperature-controlled vessels. The analysis focuses mainly on the quasi-stationary phase of the injection event and experimental results are scaled to physics-based models and new empirical correlations are proposed.

Pedagogy of yoga due to population heath and targeted to extension positions and their effectivness to physiotherapy.

Kozáková, Kristýna January 2018 (has links)
Title: Pedagogy of yoga due to population heath and targeted to extension positions and their effectivness to physiotherapy Objectives: The aim of the thesis is to clarify and collect sufficient information in the theoretical part about the anatomical, kinesiological and biomechanical aspects of the bending positions. After that, I will try to elaborate the theoretical background of yoga, its history, philosophy and a detailed description of selected bending positions (Usthrasana, Bhudjangasana, Urdhva mukha shvanasana), which are based on yoga. Grounded on the research questions in the practical part, I will assess whether there are discrepancies between the theoretical basis of the positions and the way they are taught in the classes today. I will evaluate how are the lessons currently taught in open yoga classes, whether they include those positions or not. I will also point out the use of compensatory aids and the degree education plays in this field. An integral piece of the practical part will be a summary of whether yoga classes take into an account the health of the clients. Methods: This is the theoretical-empirical character of the work. The research method is the observation and form of interview with yoga instructors on publicly accessible yoga lessons. Results: It has been confirmed...

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertação - Washington Luiz Pinto Filho.pdf: 8211076 bytes, checksum: 5b0146ee71fe71f4ffea30a9fca0f822 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-11-29 / Não informada / The city of Manaus has the highest average growth rates of the fleet, according to the DENATRAN. Over the past 10 years, the fleet of cars rose from 124,840 (2003) to 297,473 cars (2013) and 3,179 buses (2003) to 7,398 buses (2013). This equates to a 138% increase. Moreover, although, according to DENATRAN in 2003, Manaus was 220,816 vehicles. In 2013, Manaus already has 551,455 registered vehicles in its municipal fleet, which equates to an increase of almost 150%. As a result of this growth, the city roads are presented with its ability to flow and dead, visually, with their decks completely deformed. In this sense, we tried to carry this research, a structural evaluation of pavements of the main streets of the town (Av. Constantino Nery, Avenida Djalma Batista, Recife Av, Av and Av Efigênio Sales Paraíba), employing the technique FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) in the diagnosis of the pavement structures of these pathways. The results showed that the structures of those decks still have the condition to withstand the demands of traffic load applied to them, since their structural quality obtained by the mentioned technique, presented in good condition, according to the floors they presented deflections smaller than the allowed maximum, and radii of curvature much greater than 100 m. In addition, analysis was performed of the safety of the coating with respect to tire-pavement grip, which presented values for microtexture and macrotexture well outside the ranges recommended by the standards.

The mechanical properties of lattice truss tructures with loadbearing shells made of selectively laser melted Hastelloy X (TM)

Saarimäki, Jonas January 2011 (has links)
This thesis discusses how to test the mechanical properties of openlattice truss structures and hybrids being a tube containing a latticetruss structure. By properties we mean strength, stiffness, thermalconductivity and so forth.Mechanical testing was done on two different structures to betterunderstand how the load-bearing properties change when these structuresare subjected to tensile, compressive and bending forces. The structuresinvestigated were Diamond and Octagon built at 45° and 90°. Acousticemission was also used to evaluate and analyze the different behaviour ofthe structures. The test results were used to produce design criteria forproperties in different cell structures manufactured of Hastelloy X™. Amap with design criteria containing stiffness and weight per cubiccentimetre was produced for parts that would be subjected to compressiveforces.
