Unreliable Narration and the Portrayal of Bertha Mason in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre

Melkner Moser, Linda January 2012 (has links)
This essay investigates the narration in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre by applying narratologist Great Olson’s model of unreliable narration to Jane, the novel’s narrator. Further, the novel discusses how Jane’s reliability affects the portrayal of the character Bertha Mason. The essay argues that the narrator’s characterization of Bertha Mason is deliberately misleading.

From White City to Green Acres: Bertha Palmer and the Gendering of Space in the Gilded Age

Smith, Barbara Peters 16 September 2015 (has links)
Throughout an adult life that witnessed drastic cultural upheaval between the Civil War and World War I, Bertha Honoré Palmer (1849-1918) was continually called on to deploy her Victorian values in response to modern events. Being a woman only complicated this negotiation. But being a child of the American frontier granted her a latitude and mobility that were rare for women of her class and era – allowing her to challenge gender boundaries and occupy more than one cultural space at a time. Most of what has been written about Bertha Palmer’s life has been exceptionalist in approach and tone, ascribing her outsized social and political successes to her physical beauty and perfection of temperament. I believe Bertha Palmer’s importance as a crucial transitional bridge between True Woman and New Woman has been underestimated in this discourse. Near the end of her life, a move to Florida offered her the potential to resolve the inside/outside, domestic/public, feminine/masculine dialectics that lay at the heart of her restless movements. These contradictions and dichotomies that Bertha Palmer embodied on a grand scale do more to make her knowable to us today than the record of her words and actions can accomplish. Both her Victorian reticence and her modernistic construction of a seamless public façade have a way of hindering our best efforts to understand her motivations – especially the choice to move to Florida – despite a wealth of biographical material, including her correspondence housed in Chicago and Sarasota history centers, and contemporary news accounts. In the end, the cultural history of the Gilded Age gives us the only reliable lens for penetrating the veneer of Bertha Palmer.

Geografia política e geopolítica no Brasil (1982-2012) / Political Geography and Geopolitics in Brazil (1982-2012)

Karol, Eduardo 31 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis discusses Political Geography and Geopolitics produced by geographers between 1982 and 2012, looking to identify which topics were the most discussed, the places where they were produced and the existence of specialists linked to the formulation of territorial policies of the Brazilian State. Thus, this thesis debates a new moment in Brazilian Geography, showing that the negligence of the geographers towards an analysis of the State did not go off the education and research institutions. Among the results achieved, this thesis also exposes the concentration of production in the hands of few geographers, an observed situation throughout the whole 20th century, the location of the production based on large universities in the biggest urban centers of the country, and the bond of geographers with State policies of territorial organization. It concludes that, during the period observed, the works of Bertha K. Becker are widely spread in the Political Geography and Geopolitc, and that the renew, which intended to make geographers not to produce studies about the State has failed, an in fact, the number of studies about territorial policies of the State has grown.

In this way, we verify the subjective processes and the narrative techniques of presentation of the conscience, as well as the affiliation of the author in the slope of the novel of introspection in Brazil, situating her inside the Brazilian literature through this kind. We intend to put them in correlation with another novels of introspection, which reverberated in Brazil the ruptures with the Realism, and the dialogue among the Brazilian writers with the esthetics of the ending of the 19th century, especially the simbolic, in which the meaning of the space in the narratives and its relations with the subjectives processes and which procedures of language will be retaken by others Brazilians writers in the narratives of subjective exploration. Also, this work intends to help in this way to the elaboration of a history of the novel of introspection in Brazil.

This dissertation discusses the participation of women in sciences with the objective of understand which conditions, factors and strategies had influenced the feminine access to Brazilian¿s scientific institutions at the beginning of 20th century. To elaborate this study we analyzed the trajectory of the scientist and feminist, Bertha Maria Júlia Lutz (18941976), contemplating mainly its performance as representative of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro in the ¿Brazilian Inspection Council on Artistic and Scientific Expeditions¿, between the years of 1939 and 1951. Bertha Lutz was one of the first Brazilian women civil servant, after being approved in a public competition for the position of ¿secretary¿ of the National Museum, in 1919. In this same year, she created a feminist association entitled ¿League for the Intellectual Emancipation of Woman¿ and, since then, dedicated herself intensely to practice sciences and to the feminist movement. A few years later, she left the position of ¿secretary¿ to assume the position of naturalist, and consolidated a steady and well-succeeded career in natural sciences. As member of Inspection Council, she took part in the process of formulating national scientific policies, process that was just starting in Brazil. Based on the recurrent idea present in the bibliography on gender and sciences and women¿s history that the feminine participation in sciences was more important than we imagine, but there are few registers and a small number of analyses about this experiences, we consider that to rescue and to analyze trajectories of women that had worked as scientists, relating these experiences with its specific contexts, are an important contribution and can help the understanding of the different ways in which the gender influenced and it continues to influence the construction of sciences, and to reflect about the social, economical and political influences, that affects the scientific activity / Mestrado / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica
