We consider the problem of minimizing costs in the generation unit commitment problem, a cornerstone in electric power system operations, while enforcing an -- reliability criterion. This reliability criterion is a generalization of the well-known - criterion and dictates that at least fraction of the total system demand (for ) must be met following the failure of or fewer system components. We refer to this problem as the contingency-constrained unit commitment problem, or CCUC. We present a mixed-integer programming formulation of the CCUC that accounts for both transmission and generation element failures. We propose novel cutting plane algorithms that avoid the need to explicitly consider an exponential number of contingencies. Computational studies are performed on several IEEE test systems and a simplified model of the Western US interconnection network. These studies demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods relative to current state-of-the-art.

This research is concerned with inheritance as used in object-oriented database. More specifically, partial bi-directional inheritance among classes is examined. In partial inheritance, a class can inherit a proper subset of instance variables from another class. Two subclasses of the same superclass do not need to inherit the same proper subset of instance variables from their superclass. Bi-directional partial inheritance allows a class to inherit instance variables from its subclass. The prototype of an object-oriented database that supports both full and partial bi-directional inheritance among classes was developed on top of an existing relational database management system. The prototype was tested with two database applications. One database application needs full and partial inheritance. The second database application required bi-directional inheritance. The result of this testing suggests both advantages and disadvantages of partial bi-directional inheritance. Future areas of research are also suggested.

Additive manufacturing (AM) offers a way to manufacture highly complex designs with potentially enhanced performance as it is free from many of the constraints associated with traditional manufacturing. However, current design and optimisation tools, which were developed much earlier than AM, do not allow efficient exploration of AM's design space. Among these tools are a set of numerical methods/algorithms often used in the field of structural optimisation called topology optimisation (TO). These powerful techniques emerged in the 1980s and have since been used to achieve structural solutions with superior performance to those of other types of structural optimisation. However, such solutions are often constrained during optimisation to minimise structural complexities, thereby, ensuring that solutions can be manufactured via traditional manufacturing methods. With the advent of AM, it is necessary to restructure these techniques to maximise AM's capabilities. Such restructuring should involve identification and relaxation of the optimisation constraints within the TO algorithms that restrict design for AM. These constraints include the initial design, optimisation parameters and mesh characteristics of the optimisation problem being solved. A typical TO with certain mesh characteristics would involve the movement of an assumed initial design to another with improved structural performance. It was anticipated that the complexity and performance of a solution would be affected by the optimisation constraints. This work restructured a TO algorithm called the bidirectional evolutionary structural optimisation (BESO) for AM. MATLAB and MSC Nastran were coupled to study and investigate BESO for both two and three dimensional problems. It was observed that certain parametric values promote the realization of complex structures and this could be further enhanced by including an adaptive meshing strategy (AMS) in the TO. Such a strategy reduced the degrees of freedom initially required for this solution quality without the AMS.

We construct a co-analytic filter on the set of finite sequences of natural numbers, which allows us to obtain a strongly affine function of arbitrary Borel class from compact convex subset of locally convex space through single limit process (by this filter) applied to countable system of affine continuous functions. Conversely we show that function obtainted as result of such process is necessarily Borel and strongly affine. Further we generalize this method using metrizable reduction approach for Baire functions on non-metrizable spaces. Last chapter covers similar result for bi-analytic functions on separable metrizable spaces.

L'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé définit l'infertilité comme une maladie et un échec de l'appareil reproducteur à parvenir à une grossesse après 12 mois ou plus de rapports sexuels réguliers non protégés. De nos jours, l'infertilité est devenue un phénomène commun affectant 1 couple en âge de procréer sur 5. Une origine idiopathique est le plus souvent associée à un système immunitaire actif qui pourrait produire des niveaux élevés d'anticorps anti-liquide séminal ou anti-sperme. L'auto-immunisation, aussi bien que l'iso-immunisation, joue un rôle significatif dans jusqu'à 30% des cas signalés. Le liquide séminal, qui est défini comme un fluide complexe contenant le sperme, les vésicules cellulaires et autres cellules et composantes, pourraient immuniser l'appareil génital féminin. Cette thèse est liée à l'infertilité féminine immune, en particulier à l'iso-immunisation féminine. Une meilleure compréhension de cette manifestation physiopathologique consiste en (1) la détermination des isotypes d'anticorps jouant un rôle significatif dans cette maladie, puis en (2) la caractérisation et l'identification des antigènes de liquide séminal ou de sperme reconnus par ces anticorps, (3) la proposition de marqueurs diagnostiques potentiels afin d'adapter des thérapies spécifiques, et, en outre, la conception d'un outil de diagnostic miniaturisé basé sur les marqueurs sélectionnés, (4) la suggestion d'une éventuelle immuno-intervention. En se fondant sur la distribution des isotypes d'anticorps spécifiques au liquide séminal/sperme, nous suggérons que les immunoglobulines E, M, A1,2, et G3 ne sont pas impliquées dans la sensibilisation physiopathologique chez les femmes. Les IgG4, semblent constituer la sous classe majeure interagissant avec les protéines de sperme. A l’inverse, les IgG1 semblent être principalement impliquées dans la réactivité vis-à-vis des protéines séminales. Nous avons également élargi le groupe déjà existant d’IgGs liés aux protéines de sperme à d’autres protéines, parmi lesquelles la protéine de choc thermique 70 1A/1B, la protéine apparentée aux protéines de choc thermique 71kDa et l’alpha-énolase ont été reconnues, pour la première fois, être liés à l’iso-immunisation féminine. Nous avons mis en évidence le rôle des protéines séminales dans l’iso-immunisation et pas seulement dans l’hypersensibilité au sperme par l’intermédiaire d’IgE. En particulier, l’antigène spécifique de la prostate, la phosphatase acide prostatique et la protéine à doigt de zinc 778 ont été décrites comme immuno-dominants parmi les protéines séminales reconnues par des IgGs liés aux protéines de sperme. La détermination des sous classes d’IgG de sérum féminin, spécifiques au liquide séminal/sperme, pourrait rendre le diagnostic des patients plus complet. Les IgG1 et IgG4 anti-liquide séminal/sperme pourraient présenter un intérêt pour l’immunothérapie. Par ailleurs, les protéines décrites, dans notre étude, pourraient se révéler être des bio marqueurs utiles pour de telles pathologies. Le dispositif miniaturisé pourrait être de type LFIA (Lateral Flow Immuno Assay), se basant sur la détection immuno-chimique d’anticorps spécifiques. L’immuno-intervention envisagée pourrait reposer sur l’effet d’immunoglobulines intraveineuses. / The World health Organization reports infertility as a disease and a failure of reproductive tract to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Nowadays, infertility has become a common life phenomenon affecting 1 out of 5 couples at reproductive age. Idiopathic cause is mostly associated with active immune system which may produce high levels of anti-seminal and/or anti-sperm antibodies. Auto-immunization as well as iso-immunization has a significant role in up to 30% of reported cases of infertility. Semen that is defined as a complex fluid containing sperm, cellular vesicles and other cells and components, could immunize the female genital tract. This thesis is related to female immune infertility, in particular to female iso-immunization. The better understanding of this pathophysiological event consists of (1) the determination of antibody isotype playing a significant role in this disease, then (2) the characterization and identification of semen antibody-binding proteins, seminal and/or sperm, (3) the proposal of potential diagnostic markers to adapt specific therapy and, in addition, the design of miniaturized diagnostic tool based on the selected markers, (4) the suggestion of potential immuno-intervention. Based on the distribution of seminal/sperm-specific antibody isotypes, we suggest that immunoglobulins E, M, A1,2, G3 are not involved in the primary pathophysiological female sensitization. IgG4 appears to be the major subclass interacting with sperm proteins. On a contrary, IgG1 seems to be the one mainly involved in the reactivity towards seminal proteins. We have also extended the existing group of IgG-binding sperm proteins, among which heat shock protein 70 1A/1B, heat shock cognate protein 71 kDa and alpha-enolase have been shown, for the first time, to be related to female iso-immunization. We have put the emphasis on the role of seminal proteins in iso-immunization and not only in the IgE-mediated semen hypersensitivity as known so far. In particular, prostate-specific antigen, prostatic acid phosphatase and zinc finger protein 778 have been determined as immunodominant among IgG-binding seminal proteins. The determination of female serum seminal/sperm-specific IgG subclasses could make the patient diagnoses more comprehensive. Anti-seminal/sperm IgG1,4 might be of interest for immunotherapy. Furthermore, the herein described proteins could be useful biomarkers of such pathology. The miniaturized chip could be a lateral flow immunoassay-based device acting on the immunochemical detection of specific antibodies. The intended immuno-intervention could consist of the effect of intravenous immunoglobulins.

Stocker de grandes quantités de données complexifie les interactions avec les systèmes de Business Intelligence (BI). Les systèmes de recommandation semblent un choix logique pour aider les utilisateurs dans leur analyse. Ils extraient des comportements de données historiques et suggèrent des actions personnalisées, potentiellement redondantes, via des scores de similarité. La diversité est essentielle pour améliorer la satisfaction des utilisateurs, d’où l’intérêt particulier accordé aux recommandations complémentaires. Nous avons étudié deux problèmes concrets d’exploration de données en BI et proposons de découvrir et exploiter les intentions utilisateur pour fournir deux recommandeurs de requête. Le premier, un recommandeur collaboratif réactif original basé sur l’intention, recommande des séquences de requêtes à l’utilisateur pour poursuivre son analyse. Le second propose proactivement un ensemble de requêtes pour compléter un rapport BI, en fonction di contexte utilisateur. / The storage of big amounts of data may lead to a series of long questions towards the expected solution which complicates user interactions with Business Intelligence (BI) systems. Recommender systems appear as a natural solution to help the users complete their analysis. They try to discover user behaviors from the past logs and to suggest personalized actions by predicting lists of likeness scores, which may lead to redundant recommendations. Nowadays, diversity is becoming essential to improve users’ satisfaction, thus, a special interest is dedicated to complementary recommendation. We studied two concrete data exploration problems in BI and we propose to discover and leverage the user intents to provide two query recommenders. The first, an original reactive collaborative Intent-based Recommender, recommends sequences of queries for the user to pursue her analysis. The second one proactively proposes a bundle of queries to complete user BI report, based on the user intents.

Business Intelligence (BI) syftar till att förädla data för att förbättra det organisatoriska beslutsfattandet. Bristande datakvalité orsakar många misslyckade BI-projekt och studier belyser att säkerställande av data av hög kvalité är grundläggande för att lyckas inom BI. Uppsatsens syfte var därför att skapa en förståelse av praktiska tillvägagångssätt för en sådan säkerställning. Begreppet datakvalité kan brytas ner i dimensioner för att göra det mer hanterbart, och denna studie bygger på vad som tidigare tagits fram som nyckeldimensioner. Intervjuer genomfördes med fyra konsulter med expertis och lång erfarenhet inom BI. Utöver en effektiv ETL-process och kontroller i BI-systemet, genomsyras resultatet av ett behov av förarbete inför lagring i källsystemen samt kontinuerliga avstämningsrutiner. Detta för att möjliggöra säkerställandet av data av hög kvalité i större utsträckning. Indikationer ges även på att tillvägagångssätt för att säkerställa data av hög kvalité styrs av de krav som ställs på datat för att det ska vara användbart för dess avsedda syfte.

Caracterização microestrutural e eletroquímica de revestimentos ambientalmente amigáveis aplicados sobre a liga de Al 2024-T3. / Microestructural and electrochemical characterization of environmentally friendly coatings applied on Al alloy 2024-T3.Morales Palomino, Luis Enrique 14 November 2007 (has links)
A crescente preocupação com o desenvolvimento sustentável, aliada com uma maior conscientização com relação à preservação do meio ambiente, tem incentivado pesquisas com a finalidade de encontrar substitutos ambientalmente amigáveis para os eficientes sistemas à base de cromo hexavalente (Cr6+), que são empregados como pré-tratamento em ligas de alumínio de alta resistência utilizadas na indústria aeronáutica. Neste trabalho, o desempenho do silano BTSE (Bis-1,2-(trietoxisilil) etano) como método de proteção contra a corrosão da liga de alumínio 2024-T3 foi investigado utilizando técnicas de caracterização eletroquímicas, microestruturais e químicas. Para melhorar as propriedades anticorrosivas do sistema, a camada de silano foi modificada pela introdução de aditivos, tendo sido estudados também sistemas em bi-camada. Efeitos das condições de cura (tempo e temperatura) do BTSE e da quantidade de modificantes sobre as propriedades dos substratos revestidos também foram avaliados. Para os estudos eletroquímicos, realizados em solução de NaCl 0,1 M, foram empregadas a espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica (EIS) e curvas de polarização potenciodinâmica anódica e catódica. As técnicas de caracterização morfológica e microestrutural foram microscopia de força atômica (AFM), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (SEM) e medidas de ângulo de contato. A caracterização da composição e do estado químico da camada foi realizada usando as espectroscopias por energia dispersiva de Raios-X (EDS), de infravermelho (IR) e de fotoelétrons excitados (XPS). Os resultados dos ensaios de corrosão mostraram que a adição dos modificantes à camada de BTSE melhora o desempenho anticorrosivo do sistema, o qual também teve seu comportamento melhorado quando utilizado em forma de bi-camada. Verificou-se que um excesso de aditivos tende a deteriorar as propriedades protetoras do silano, e que o aumento do tempo e da temperatura de cura é benéfico para as propriedades anticorrosivas dos diferentes sistemas. Os resultados dos ensaios de caracterização química e microestrutural também detectaram que os modificantes contribuem para uma melhor cobertura do substrato pela camada de silano, assim como para uma maior reticulação da mesma, sem, no entanto, modificar sua estrutura química e física. / The increasing concern with sustainable development, allied with a stronger awareness with environmental preservation, has stimulated researches in order to find environmentally friendly substitutes to replace the efficient hexavalent chromium-based pre-treatment systems (Cr6+) used to protect high-strength aluminium alloys employed in the aircraft industry. In this work, the performance of BTSE (bis-1, 2-(triethoxysilyl) ethane) as a protection method against corrosion of aluminium alloy 2024-T3 was investigated using electrochemical, microstructural and chemical characterization techniques. In order to improve the system anticorrosion properties, modifiers were added to the silane layer, and bi-layers systems were also tested. The effects of the silane curing conditions (time and temperature) and of the modifiers amounts on the properties of the layers were also evaluated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and anodic and cathodic potentiodynamic polarization curves were employed for the electrochemical studies, which were performed in 0.1 M NaCl solution. For microstructural and morphological characterization, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurements were used. The chemical state and the composition of the different layers were evaluated using X-ray photoelectrons (XPS), infrared (IR) and X-ray dispersive energy (EDS) spectroscopy. The results of the corrosion studies have shown that the addition of modifiers to the BTSE layer improves its anticorrosion performance, which was also improved in the bi-layers systems. It was also verified that addition of modifiers excess hinders the performance of the layers, as well as that increasing curing time and temperature are beneficial to the anticorrosion properties of the systems. The results of the different chemical and microstructural analyses showed that the modifiers contribute to better substrate coverage by the silane layer, as well as to a more complete reticulation. However, this does not imply in modifications of the chemical and physical structure of the layer.

Algoritmos e técnicas de validação em agrupamento de dados multi-representados, agrupamento possibilístico e bi-agrupamento / Algorithms and validation techniques in multi-represented data clustering, possibilistic clustering and bi-clusteringHorta, Danilo 25 November 2013 (has links)
Existem bases para as quais os dados são naturalmente representados por mais de uma visão. Por exemplo, imagens podem ser descritas por atributos de cores, textura e forma. Proteínas podem ser caracterizadas pela sequência de aminoácidos e pela representação tridimensional. A unificação das diferentes visões de uma base de dados pode ser problemática porque elas podem não ser comparáveis entre si ou podem apresentar diferentes graus de importância. Esses graus de importância podem, inclusive, se manifestar de maneira local, de acordo com a subestrutura dos dados em questão. Isso motivou o surgimento de algoritmos de agrupamento de dados capazes de lidar com bases multi-representadas (i.e., que possuem mais de uma visão dos dados), como o algoritmo SCAD. Esse algoritmo se mostrou promissor em experimentos relatados na literatura, mas possui problemas críticos identificados neste trabalho que o impedem de funcionar em determinados cenários. Tais problemas foram solucionados por meio da proposição de uma nova versão do algoritmo, denominada ASCAD, fundamentada em provas formais sobre a sua convergência. Foram desenvolvidas versões relacionais do algoritmo ASCAD, capazes de lidar com bases descritas apenas por relações de proximidade entre os objetos. Foi desenvolvido também um índice de validação interna e relativa de agrupamento voltado para dados multi-representados. A avaliação de agrupamento possibilístico e de bi-agrupamento por meio da comparação entre solução encontrada e solução de referência (validação externa) também foi explorada. Algoritmos de bi-agrupamento têm ganhado um interesse crescente da comunidade de análise de expressão gênica. No entanto, pouco se conhece do comportamento e das propriedades das medidas voltadas para validação externa de bi-agrupamento, o que motivou uma análise teórica e empírica dessas medidas. Essa análise mostrou que a maioria das medidas de biagrupamento possui problemas críticos e destacou duas delas como sendo as mais promissoras. Foram inclusas nessa análise três medidas de agrupamento particional não exclusivo, cujo uso na comparação de bi-agrupamentos é possível por meio de uma nova abordagem de avaliação de bi-agrupamento proposta nesta tese. Agrupamento particional não exclusivo faz parte de um domínio mais geral de soluções, i.e., o domínio dos agrupamentos possibilísticos. Observou-se algumas falhas conceituais importantes das medidas de agrupamento possibilístico, o que motivou o desenvolvimento de novas medidas e de uma análise empírica e conceitual envolvendo 34 medidas. Uma das medidas propostas se destacou como sendo a única que apresentou avaliações imparciais com relação ao número de grupos, o valor máximo de similaridade ao comparar a solução ideal encontrada com a solução de referência e avaliações sensíveis às diferenças das soluções em todos os cenários considerados / There are data sets for which the instances are naturally represented by more than one view. For example, images can be described by attributes of color, texture, and shape. Proteins can be characterized by the amino acid sequence and by their three-dimensional description. The unification of different views of a data set can be problematic because they may not be comparable or may have different degrees of importance. These degrees of importance may even manifest itself locally, according to the data substructures. This prompted the emergence of clustering algorithms capable of handling multi-represented data sets (i.e., data sets having more than one view) as the SCAD algorithm. This algorithm has shown promising results in experiments reported in the literature, but it has critical problems identified in this work that hinder its application in certain scenarios. These problems were solved here by proposing a new version of the algorithm, called ASCAD, based on formal proofs about its correctness. We developed relational versions for ASCAD, capable of handling data sets described only by the proximities between the instances. We also developed an index for internal and relative validation of multi-represented data clusterings. The evaluation of possibilistic clustering and bi-clustering by comparing the found and reference solutions (external validation) was also explored. Bi-clustering algorithms have gained increasing interest from the community of gene expression analysis. However, little is known of the behavior and properties of the measures aimed at external validation of bi-clustering, which motivated a theoretical and empirical analysis of these measures in this work. This analysis showed that most bi-clustering measures has critical issues and highlighted two of the measures as being the most promising. We included in this analysis three measures of non-exclusive partitional clustering, whose use in comparing bi-clusterings is possible through a new approach proposed in this thesis. Non-exclusive partitional clustering belong to a more general domain of solutions, i.e., the domain of possibilistic clusterings. There are some important conceptual flaws in the measures of possibilistic clustering, which motivated us to develop new measures and to conceptually and empirically analyse 34 measures. One of the proposed measures stood out as being the one who presented unbiased evaluations regarding the number of clusters, the maximum similarity when comparing the optimal solution with the reference one, and evaluations sensitive to solution differences in all scenarios considered
