'n Funksionalistiese benadering tot BybelvertalingBasson, Catherina Susanna January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (M Phil)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The functional approach to translation is investigated in the context of Bible
translation. For some practising translators, functionalism has application only in the
production of instrumental translations, and for them this approach will inevitably lead to the
dethroning of the source text.
In Bible translation the status of the source text is very important. With the functional
equivalence approach this status is disregarded in an effort to produce a Bible translation
that can be used as a missionary instrument. Within functionalism, however, a documentaryexoticising
translation can retain the status of the source text and can have the skopos to
bridge the cultural gap between Biblical times and the modern world by adding cultural
information.
This was the skopos of a functional translation of the New Testament in German.
Examples from this translation, as well as examples from the NAV (1983), were examined
qualitatively to see how additional cultural information could assist the target reader in
understanding the otherness of the ancient Biblical text.
An empirical investigation was done. Text fragments from the NAV (1983), with
cultural information added, were presented to people who study the Bible regularly. The
response to the additional cultural information was very positive.
The focus in the literature study was on the functional approach to translation, also
known as skopos theory. This was compared with the functional equivalence approach as
well as the newer relevance theory approach as described by Gutt. Attention was also given
to the importance of culture in translation.
In the functional approach other skopoi and other target groups can be identified. In a
further study, the application of this approach to the translation of the Old Testament can be
investigated. The functional approach might also be used in the translation of other ancient
religious texts such as the Koran and the Torah.
The benefits of co-operation between experts in the field of the Biblical languages
and culture and practising translators are shown. The skopos of the translation will give such
a team the framework within which they can produce a translation with a specific aim for a
specific target group.
The functional approach can be applied broadly to include both instrumental and
documentary translations. In the case of Bible translation the documentary-exoticising
translation provides the framework wherein the source text of the Bible can be accounted for
in a responsible way. The application of functionalism is, however, wide enough to include all
types of translation, provided that a clear skopos is identified and formulated for each
translation.
Nuwe Testament in Duits.

Thesis (MPhil (Dept. of Ancient Studies) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / Mention is yet again made of a new translation of the Bible into Afrikaans. The question
is: Which translation approach must be followed in order to ensure effective
communication of this age-old message?
In 2002 and 2003, a project was launched in Stellenbosch during which translation teams
prepared four different draft translations of parts of the Bible from the original languages.
A new translation model was used, namely Gutt's direct and indirect translation
strategies, which were applied within Nord's functionalistic approach as framework.
After the review of some of the most important Bible translations through the ages, main
features of Nida's translation model are explained. It is indicated that the basis of his
translation approach, the code model of communication, is regarded as insufficient for
describing translation as a phenomenon. New developments in linguistics, namely
Sperber and Wilson's exposition of Relevance Theory, and Translation Studies, namely
Ernst-August Gutt's application of Relevance Theory to translation and Christiane Nord's
version of the Skopos Theory, are discussed. The conclusion is made that these
developments have been taken into account in the translation model of the Stellenbosch
translation project and that the model is indeed theoretically well founded.
Based on the annotations of the translation products, it was found that this abstract
theoretical model can indeed be applied successfully in practice. The results of the
empirical study indicate that the average reader does not always prefer the same type of
translation on a specific kind of occasion, but has a need for an informal as well as a
formal Bible translation.
Following the findings of this study, proposals are made that can be applied during a
possible new translation of the Bible into Afrikaans.

Bibelubersetzung als schnittstelle zwischen exegese und kultur : eine untersuchung anhand neun neutestamentlicher konzepte / The importance of exegesis and culture for bible translation : an examination based on nine different concepts of new testamentFrank, Andrea, 1981- 06 1900 (has links)
New Testament / M. Th. (New Testament)

Die vertaling van metafore in ’n brontaalgeoriënteerde Bybel in AfrikaansHendriks, Elisabet 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / In this study the problems surrounding the source language orientated translation of metaphors in general, and more specifically the source language orientated translation of Biblical metaphors, is investigated.
A new Afrikaans translation of the Bible will soon be undertaken. This translation is meant to be source language orientated. The translators responsible for the translation are in need of guidelines to ensure the effective source language orientated translation of metaphors.
In the literature study a general overview of the phenomenon called ‘metaphor’ is given, in order to equip translators with the required theoretical knowledge to successfully identify, analyse and describe metaphors. It is followed by an overview of metaphor translation in general. The theoretical approach to metaphor translation of Dagut, Stienstra and Schäffner relies heavily on the difference between conceptual and linguistic metaphors. This approach is identified as useful for source language orientated metaphor translation.
The background and translation principles of the Ou Afrikaanse Vertaling (OAV) and the Nuwe Afrikaanse Vertaling (NAV) are investigated after the literature study. The distinctive approaches of these two Bible translations are criticised by virtue of the knowledge gained from the literature study in the previous chapters. Furthermore, a working hypothesis regarding the source language orientated translation of metaphors is formulated. This hypothesis is tested during the empirical study by means of nine metaphors from the Psalms. The nine metaphors are translated using a model which analyses the metaphors and translates them in a source language orientated way.
On the basis of the literature and empirical study, a series of conclusions are made. These are applicable to metaphor translation in general, as well as specifically source language orientated metaphor translation. Suggestions that apply specifically to the new Afrikaans translation of the Bible are also made.

Vertaalteoretiese benaderings by KinderbybelvertalingBrink, Theodora Petronella 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis the importance of knowledge about translation theories during the
preparatory phase of a translation project is examined. Theorists agree that translated
children’s literature in general and children’s Bibles in particular are transmitters of
cultural and ideological norms, and that source texts are therefore to a greater or lesser
degree manipulated when they are translated. This thesis is an attempt to ascertain in
which ways insight into various translation theories regarding translation as
manipulation as well as theories about Bible translation empowers a translator to
deliver a functional target text in which she can motivate and defend her translation
choices and strategies.
For this reason manipulation theories, Venuti’s insights about domestication and
foreignisation and the theories of Nida, Nord and Gutt about Bible translation are
described. A particular translation project is then analysed by comparing the source
text, the Read and Learn Bible by Eva Moore, with the target text, the Lees-en-Leer
Bybel, to discover in which ways insight into the various translation theories can lead to
a functional translation.

Bible translation and relevance theory : the translation of TitusSmith, Kevin Gary 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (D.Litt.)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Relevance theory has seriously challenged the theoretical soundness of formal and
functional equivalence as Bible translation methods. In Translation and relevance: Cognition
and context, Gutt (1991) argued that relevance theory provides translators with the best
available framework for understanding and practicing translation. In his effort to provide a
comprehensive account of translation, he proposed two new approaches to translation: direct
translation and indirect translation. He did not, however, develop direct and indirect
translation into well-defined approaches to translation.
This study explores the viability of direct and indirect translation as approaches to Bible
translation. First, by applying insights drawn from relevance theory, it spells out the
theoretical and practical implications of these approaches in an attempt to develop them into
well-defined translation methods. The explication of the two new approaches shows how and
why relevance theoretic approaches to translation differ from formal and functional
equivalence. In addition to describing the general approach of direct and indirect translation, it
also demonstrates how each approach handles specific translation issues such as figurative
language, implicit information, ambiguity, and gender-biased language.
Then, by using them to translate the epistle to Titus, the study tests the practical
effectiveness of each new approach. This lengthy application yields many examples of how
relevance theory provides translators with valuable guidance for making difficult translation
decisions. It emphasises the need for translators to take measures to bridge the contextual gap
between the source context and the receptor context, illustrating how this can be done by
providing footnotes in a direct translation or by explicating implicit information in an indirect
translation.
The study closes with a brief assessment of the two new approaches and some
suggestions for further research. The conclusions show both the value and the limitations of
the results of this study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Relevansieteorie bevraagteken ernstig die teoretiese basis van formele en funksionele
ekwivalensie as metodes van Bybelvertaling. Gutt (1991) het in Translation and relevance:
elke benadering spesifieke aangeleenthede soos beeldspraak, implisiete inligting,
