Grade 12 life science: a factor in the academic achievement in biological and natural science in basic nursingNdwambi, Onica Mankebe 11 1900 (has links)
The funding regimens of Higher education institutions (HEIs) present a challenge to every institution. It is expected that students who are selected to register for degrees or diplomas must be successful and obtain their qualifications in the minimum time required to ensure optimum subsidy for the institution. The throughput rates in higher education institutions remains of serious concern and emphasis on the selection criteria or prerequisites to enter a specific programme might be a possible factor in the throughput rates of students.
The aim of this study was to identify and describe whether basic nursing students who passed Grade 12 Biology, currently referred to as Life Science, with at least 50% was a factor in the successful completion of the Biological and Natural Science module (BNS 100) in their first year.
A quantitative research study was conducted in one government nursing college, Gauteng province in Tshwane region in South Africa. A checklist was used to collect data from the 2014 first-year student records and a questionnaire was used to collect data from the 2015 second-year students. No sampling was done since all the 2014 first-year students’ admission records were accessed for data collection and all the available second-year students of 2015 were invited to participate.
The findings revealed that background knowledge of Grade 12 Life Science and English language proficiency could be associated with the academic performance in the BNS100 module of the basic nursing students. The findings might be used to make recommendations for possible prerequisites for entry into a nursing programme as well as to support students’ education and training to ensure a reduction in student attrition rates and improve the shortage of nurses.
The findings motivated the researcher to recommend that the college under study, and other HIEs with similar concerns and student profiles should revise the selection and recruitment criteria for students to enter the basic nursing programme. This might contribute to selecting the correct prospective candidates who would have a better chance of completing their basic training in the four-year time as the expected period to complete the programme. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Acompanha: Entrando no ensino médio: caderno de avaliação diagnóstica de conteúdos em biologia / O presente estudo diz respeito a uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa. Tem origem na experiência docente de sua autora em Ciências e Biologia, diante da recorrente problemática acerca da defasagem dos conteúdos biológicos pelos alunos na passagem do Ensino Fundamental para o Ensino Médio. Existe aí um hiato contraproducente à aprendizagem. Os alunos mostram dificuldades em acompanhar conteúdos dentro da disciplina de Biologia, os quais já teriam sido estudados durante o Ensino Fundamental, mesmo que em menor grau de profundidade e complexidade, na disciplina de Ciências. Assim, a questão de pesquisa que orientou este estudo consistiu em identificar qual é o repertório de conhecimentos em Biologia que estão presentes entre alunos iniciantes da 1ª série do Ensino Médio, para identificar uma possível defasagem e recolher dados que possam nortear ações que reduzam as deficiências de aprendizagem. Para isso, elaborou-se um Produto Educacional, o “Entrando no Ensino Médio: Caderno de Avaliação Diagnóstica de Conteúdos em Biologia”, que contemplou 10 questões de conhecimentos estudados em Ciências no Ensino Fundamental e que serão aprofundados em Biologia na 1ª série do Ensino Médio. Cada questão disposta em tal material agregou justificativas fundamentadas em autores da área de ensino de Ciências do exterior e do Brasil, além de justificativas emanadas da experiência docente da própria prática da autora/mestranda. O Caderno foi implementado em março de 2015 com três turmas de 1ª série do Ensino Médio de uma escola pública de Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil. A escolha das três questões para análise decorreu da ponderação sobre o número de acertos/erros e sobre considerações importantes nas respostas efetuadas. A metodologia utilizada foi a Grounded Theory (Metodologia Fundamentada nos Dados), em razão de ser uma abordagem que nasce da prática da pesquisa, permitindo que o problema proposto fosse aproveitado como fonte de informações, e as análises dos dados qualitativos pudessem ser enraizadas (grounded) nos dados coletados. A pesquisa abrangeu 116 alunos e os resultados indicam a existência de uma fragmentação de conhecimentos biológicos na interface Ensino Fundamental-Ensino Médio, que deriva de vários aspectos, dentre eles político, social e burocrático, mas também pedagógico, no qual os professores podem agir. A utilização do Caderno permitiu obter informações que se configuraram subsídios às estratégias de avaliação e ações futuras. Uma avaliação diagnóstica mostrou-se útil para que o(a) professor(a) possa analisar os conhecimentos trazidos por seus alunos, para então direcionar suas aulas, procurando adequar metodologias e conteúdos às necessidades mais relevantes da turma, buscar a articulação curricular, além de conceder a necessária atenção para o processo de avaliação, dentre outros, de modo que os discentes possam de fato compreender e participar das aulas. Afinal, se o professor não pode interferir nas condições de entrada do aluno, pode (e deve) interferir em suas condições de saída. / The present study concerns a qualitative study. It originates from the teaching experience of its author in Science and Biology before the problem recurring on the lag of biological content by students in the transition from Elementary School to High School. Then there is a gap counterproductive to learning. Students show difficulties in following content within the Biology discipline, which have been studied during the Elementary School, even to a lesser degree of depth and complexity, in the discipline of Science. So the research question that guided this study was to identify what is the repertoire of knowledge in Biology that are present among beginning students of the 1st grade of High School, to identify a possible discrepancy and collect data that can guide actions to reduce the deficiencies of learning. For this, it was elaborated an Educational Product, the "Entering the High School: Notebook Diagnostic Contents Evaluation in Biology", which included 10 questions of knowledge studied in Science in Elementary School and will be deepened in Biology in 1st grade of High School. Each issue arranged in such material added justifications based on authors of the Sciences teaching area the outside and Brazil, as well as justifications issued by the teaching experience of the practice of the author/master student. The Notebook was implemented in March 2015 with three classes of 1st High School grade of a public school in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The choice of the three issues for analysis was the result of consideration of the number of hits/errors and on important considerations in made answers. The methodology used was Grounded Theory (Based Methodology in Data), in reason of to be a methodological approach that is born from the practice of research, allowing the proposed problem was tapped as a source of information, and analysis of qualitative data could be rooted (grounded) on the data collected. The survey covered 116 students and the results indicate the existence of a fragmentation of biological knowledge in Elementary-High School education interface, derived from various aspects, including political, social and bureaucratic, but also pedagogical, in which teachers can act. Using the Notebook provided information that configured subsidies assessment strategies and future actions. A diagnostic evaluation was useful for the teacher to analyze the knowledge brought by his students, and then direct their classes, looking fit methodologies and content to the most relevant needs of the class, seek curricular articulation, besides to grant the necessary attention to the evaluation process, among others, so that the students can indeed understand and participate in class. After all, if the teacher cannot interfere with the student's entry, can (and should) interfere with their output conditions.

Acompanha: Guia de construção do insetário virtual / Esta dissertação apresenta uma pesquisa qualitativa investigando como os métodos observacionais de Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) podem contribuir para o ensino de Biologia, mais especificamente, de um grupo de organismos fundamentais para a manutenção do equilíbrio biológico: os insetos, através da mediação dos smartphones e Instagram. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa-ação, desenvolvida em espiral reflexiva, com os estudantes de uma escola pública, situada na região metropolitana de Curitiba, PR. O principal objetivo da pesquisa foi investigar as contribuições dos métodos de estudo de Maria Sibylla Merian, artista e cientista renascentista, para o ensino-aprendizagem dos insetos, com a construção coletiva de um insetário virtual, mediado pelas TIC. No percurso da pesquisa, investigou-se a história e a filosofia dos trabalhos de Merian no estudo dos insetos e com os smartphones e Instagram, desenvolveu-se, com os estudantes da Escola Básica, uma experiência tecnológica capaz de potencializar a mediação das TIC. Foi realizado, nessa pesquisa, as seguintes etapas: desenvolvimento do “Guia de Construção do Insetário Virtual” com os estudantes do segundo ano do Ensino Médio, a gravação das aulas em áudio, anotações das aulas em diário de campo e questionário final. Após os resultados e tratando-se de uma pesquisa-ação com característicase metodologias próprias, discutimos o processo realizado conforme sugere a espiral auto reflexiva. A história e a filosofia dos trabalhos de Maria Sibylla Merian embasaram o planejamento das sequências didáticas com o intuito de construir coletivamente o insetário virtual. Essas sequências foram elaboradas seguindo os momento pedagógicos propostos por Demétrio Delizoicov, José André Angotti e Marta Maria Pernambuco: problematização, organização do conhecimento e aplicação do conhecimento, em uma metodologia problematizadora e dialógica proposta por Paulo Freire e, fundamentada na complexidade e racionalidade dos saberes de Edgar Morin, Jean Ladriere, Jacques Ardoino, além de Neil Postman e C. P. Snow como referencial de TIC. Os dados foram categorizados segundo a matriz investigativa. Os resultados mostraram que a obra de Maria Sibylla Merian, transposta para a relação de ensino-aprendizagem dos insetos contribui significativamente para a apropriação dos conhecimentos desses seres vivos pelos estudantes, permite a eles um olhar da ciência e da arte e, ainda, problematiza o papel das TIC na escola básica.Concluímos que o “Guia de Construção do Insetário Virtual”, produto dessa dissertação de mestrado proporciona um trabalho diferenciado nas aulas de Biologia e que outros trabalhos unindo a arte, a ciência e as TIC são possíveis em sala de aula, em uma relação dialógica, problematizadora e de iniciação à complexidade dos saberes. / This thesis presents a qualitative research exploring as the way observed by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647 – 1717) that can contribute to the learning of Biology, more especifically of a fundamental grupo of mobster for a maintance ofan equilibrium: the insects by the mediation of smartphones and Instagram. It was about an action research developed information in reflexive spiral with students of a public school, located in Curitiba - PR metropolitan zone. The main objective of the research was investigate the study methods contributions of Maria Sibylla Merian, renaissence artist and scientist, to the teaching and learning the insects with a collective built of a virtual insectarium mediated by TIC. In the way of the research,it was investigate the history and the philosophy about Merian’s works in study of insects and with smartphones and Instagram, it developed with students of basic school a technology experience able of empower the mediation of the TIC. It was made in the research the following stages: development of a built of a “ guide insectarium “ with the second grade of high school students, the recording classes in audio, classes annotation in a field diary and a final questionnaire. After the results, as if it is an action research with own methodology characteristics, we discussed the process realized according to suggest the reflective self-spiral. The history and the philosophy about Maria Sibylla Merianfound the planning of the didactic sequences with intention of the collectively built a virtual insectarium. These sequences were elaborated following the pedagogics moments offered by Demétrio Delizoicov, José André Angotti and Marta Maria Pernambuco: questioning, learning organization and learning aplication in a questioning methodology and a proposal dialogic by Paulo Freire and found in a complexity and rationality of the Knowledge of the Edgar Morin, Jean Ladriere, Jacques Ardoino beyond of Neil Postman and C. P. Snow as referencial of the TIC. The dates were categorized according with the investigate head office. The results present that the works Maria Sibylla Merian takes to a relation of the teaching and learning insects, contribute significantly to the appropriation of the learning these living being by students, allowing them a look at the science and art and even discuss the role of TIC in basic school. We concluded that the “construction of a virtual guide of an insectarium”, it provides differential work in Biology classes and that offered enjoyable art and science works and the TIC are possible in classes, in a dialogics relationchip, problematization and the complexity of Knowledges.

As inovações tecnológicas mudaram o mundo, as formas de interação e o acesso à informação e ao conhecimento, reivindicando mudanças também na educação. Documentos brasileiros como os Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN), suas complementações (PCN+) e as Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais passaram a propor um ensino mais contextualizado e condizente com os novos anseios da sociedade. A formação de cidadãos críticos e o “educar para a vida” tornaram-se temas recorrentes nos documentos, textos sobre educação e nas coordenações dos colégios. No entanto, o objetivo de muitos alunos do ensino médio e de seus familiares continuou sendo a aprovação no vestibular e a obtenção de um bom escore no Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio. Mediante o atual contexto escolar, com o propósito de divulgar a ciência brasileira e produzir ferramentas que facilitem o processo de ensino-aprendizagem foi proposto esse trabalho. Através da interação com o Laboratório de Biologia Básica de Células-tronco (LABCET) do Instituto Carlos Chagas/FioCruz, as células-tronco foram utilizadas como tema gerador para a produção de um objeto educacional que visa desmitificar a ideia que a biologia prioriza a descrição e a memorização, trazendo três sequências didáticas desenvolvidas acerca dos conteúdos de embriologia, biotecnologia e bioética e expressão gênica. Estruturado a partir da metodologia dos Momentos Pedagógicos estas sequências didáticas partem de problematizações, passam pela organização do conhecimento e terminam na aplicação deste. Estas atividades foram disponibilizadas num portal também desenvolvido neste trabalho, intitulado “O que a Ciência sabe”, que conta com materiais complementares destinados a alunos do Ensino Médio e professores de Biologia. / Technological innovations changed the world, ways of interaction and access to information and knowledge, requiring changes in education also. Brazilian documents such as Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (PCN), its complements (PCN+) and Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais have been proposing a more contextualized teaching and consistent with the new desires of society. A critic citizen formation and “teaching for life” have become recurrent themes in documents, publications about education and schools’ pedagogical staff. However, the objective of many high school students and their families continued to be college acceptance and achievement of a good Exame Nacional de Ensino Médio score. By the current educational context, this study was proposed with the purpose of divulging Brazilian science e producing tools that facilitate the teaching-learning process. Through interaction with the Laboratório de Biologia Básica de Células-tronco (LABCET) of Carlos Chagas Institute/FioCruz, stem cells were utilized as generator theme for the production of an educational object that aims for demystification of the idea that biology prioritize description and memorization, bringing three didactic sequences developed on the subjects of biotechnology and bioethics, embryology and genic expression. Structured according to Pedagogical Moments methodology, these didactic sequences initiate by problematizations, pass through knowledge organization and end at its application. These activities were made available in a portal also developed in this study, entitled “O que a Ciência sabe” (”What Science knows”), that is equipped with complementary materials destined for high school students e Biology teachers.

Só em filmes: possibilidades de contaminação na aprendizagem significativa / Essa pesquisa surgiu da busca por uma metodologia de ensino que valorizasse o conhecimento científico com o uso de um recurso pedagógico atrativo - filmes comerciais -, que motivasse a aprendizagem significativa. Para tanto, apresenta uma análise de como os estudantes estabelecem relações do conhecimento científico com as imagens fílmicas e as possibilidades de contextualização acerca do tema “epidemia”. A metodologia de pesquisa envolve uma abordagem qualitativa, com alguns dados quantitativos das impressões dos estudantes em relação aos filmes de modo geral e sobre eles e a aprendizagem. Na pesquisa qualitativa, utilizou-se a categorização segundo Bardin (2011), para organizar as unidades contextuais produzidas pelos estudantes nas atividades educativas, e fazer a análise com base nos pressupostos da Teoria de Ausubel (2003) e Ausubel, Novak e Hanesian (1980). A partir da exibição do filme intitulado “Contágio”, utilizado como organizador prévio, buscou-se, nas dúvidas apresentadas pelos estudantes, identificar os conhecimentos prévios sobre o assunto. Por meio dessas dúvidas emergiram os subtemas, que foram categorizados em: epidemia, agente causador, incubação, transmissão, sintomas, prevenção e imunidade. Essas categorias serviram de elementos para a análise de indícios de aprendizagem levando a concluir que as narrativas fílmicas ajudam na formação de pontes cognitivas colaborando com a aprendizagem subordinada derivativa e correlativa, diferenciação progressiva e reconciliação integrativa, promovendo a assimilação e a retenção dos conhecimentos científicos. No referencial teórico utilizado para investigar os filmes como recurso pedagógicos é apresentado as considerações dos autores Rosália Duarte , Milton Almeida, Maria da Graça Setton, Marcos Napolitano, José Manuel Moran, entre outros. Como produto dessa pesquisa, elaborou-se um guia com outras propostas pedagógicas possíveis de trabalhar o tema “epidemia” utilizando filmes comerciais como organizadores prévios e para contextualização. To this end, it provides an analysis of how students establish relations of scientific knowledge with movie images, and the possibilities of contextualization on the topic of “epidemics”. The research methodology comprehends a qualitative approach, including some quantitative data of the students’ impressions regarding movies in general, and about the movies and learning. The categorization according to Bardin (2011) was used in the qualitative research to organize the contextual units produced by the students in the educational activities, and to conduct an analysis based on the assumptions of Ausubel’s Theory (2003) and Ausubel, Novak and Hanesian’s Theory (1980). From the showing of the movie entitled “Contagion”, used as an advance organizer, we tried to identify prior knowledge on the subject through questions raised by the students. Those same questions brought up the subtopics, categorized as epidemics, causative agent, incubation, transmission, symptoms, prevention and immunity. These categories served as elements for the analysis of learning evidence, leading to the conclusion that movie narratives help in the creation of cognitive bridges while contributing to derivative and correlative subordinate learning, progressive differentiation and integrative reconciliation, as well as promoting assimilation and retention of scientific knowledge. This study, using qualitative exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design, explored and described student nurses’ perspectives of the high failure rate in biological sciences. The study was conducted at one of the campuses of the school of nursing in the Free State province of South Africa. A purposively selected sample of 1st and 2nd year student nurses registered for the programme of education and training leading to registration as a nurse (general, psychiatric and community) and Midwife (R425, 1985; paragraph (iii) as amended) at the selected campus of the School of Nursing in the Free State was used. World café was utilized for data collection. Thematic analysis of data done using Braun and Clarke (2006) and for world café participants’ created documents, Blakeman, Samuelson and McEvoy (2012) method of document analysis was applied.
The findings identified the internal and external causes of high failure rate in biological. Internal causes included students-related factors, which included difficulty in understanding the content and lack of motivation. The external causes involved content overload, inadequate utilisation of available limited resources, ineffective teaching methods and unfair assessment practices. Suggestions that were made by the students to improve the success rate in biological sciences were based on the perceived causes. Recommendations made included in-service education on interactive, evidence-based teaching learning methods in anatomy and physiology, provision of support for students with no background knowledge of biological sciences. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)

Acompanha: Articulação de tecnologias de informação e comunicação, TIC, no ensino de biologia para estudo interdisciplinar de uma área urbana: ilha dos Valadares-PR / As transformações sociais e tecnológicas contemporâneas fizeram emergir a necessidade por mudanças significativas no sistema educacional, citam-se: a análise do perfil dos sujeitos, estrutura e enfoque curricular, expectativas de aprendizagem, formação inicial e continuada dos docentes, inserção de Tecnologiasde Informação e Comunicação - TIC no planejamento e na prática pedagógica, abordagens metodológicas ativas, interdisciplinares e contextualizadas. A partir desse contexto, a pesquisa desenvolvida propôs a análise do potencial interdisciplinar e contextualizador das TIC, representadas pela Internet e pelo software Google Earth® no ensino de Biologia com ênfase ao estudo multitemático de uma área urbana. Contemplou uma amostra de 11 estudantes cursistas do 3o ano do Ensino Médio de uma instituição da rede privada de ensino do município de Paranaguá-PR, na qual a pesquisadora é regente. A área de estudo foi a Ilha dos Valadares, localizada no mesmo município e sua seleção ocorreu porque a mesma apresenta aspectos propícios ao desenvolvimento da proposta, tais como: localização, peculiaridades do processo de ocupação antrópica, densidade demográfica, pressão sobre ecossistemas vulneráveis e especificidades do contexto social, ambiental e cultural. O referencial teórico que subsidiou essa dissertação está vinculado à interdisciplinaridade e contextualização sócio-histórica, aliando-os a adequações metodológicas com o uso de TIC, através da análise do software Google Earth® e do site Laifi segundo critérios pedagógicos e ergonômicos.A estratégia de metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi o estudo de caso, por ter um objeto de pesquisa definido, e a pesquisa-ação, uma vez que lança aos estudantes o desafio de usar as tecnologias já referidas para traçar um perfil abrangente da área estudada. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados aplicados foram: questionários diagnóstico e avaliativo, construção de um arquivo de registro para os trabalhos dos estudantes com o software, observação participante e focus group que permearam os eventos de aprendizagem ofertados durante o trabalho: seminário sobre sensoriamento remoto, apresentação inicial da área de estudo, oficina com o software Google Earth®, saída de campo pela baía de Paranaguá, pesquisa bibliográfica e socialização dos resultados em uma rede social denominada Laifi e um mural para atender a comunidade escolar.Observou-se que a maioria dos estudantes não possuía conhecimentos a respeito da área, mas seu interesse foi crescente durante o desenvolvimento dos trabalhos, trazendo sugestões para discussão e explorando outras áreas do conhecimento, demonstrando o potencial interdisciplinar e contextualizador das TIC utilizadas. Também foi possível identificar o desenvolvimento de competências e habilidades dos estudantes durante o trabalho. São produtos da pesquisa: uma sequência didática, postagem no Laifi na categoria educação e cultura e um tutorial para o uso do software que pode ser adaptado pelos professores de acordo com área pretendida. / Contemporary social and technological changes have made emerge the need for significant changes in the education system, we can mention the analysis of the personal characteristics, structure and curriculum focus, learning expectations, initial and continuing training of teachers, Information Technologies and insertion Communication - ICT in planning and teaching practice, active methodological approaches, interdisciplinary and contextualized. From this context, the research developed proposed the analysis of the interdisciplinary potential and contextualizing of ICT, represented by the Internet and Google Earth® software in teaching biology with emphasis on multi-theme study of an urban area. Included a sample of 11 course participants of the 3rd year students of the High School of an institution of private schools in the city of Paranaguá, in which the researcher is regent. The study area was that of Valadares Island, located in the same municipality and their selection was because it presents favorable aspects to the development of the proposal, such as location, peculiarities of human occupation process, population density, pressure on vulnerable ecosystems and specificities the social, environmental and cultural context. The theoretical framework that supported this thesis is linked to interdisciplinary and socio-historical context, combining them to methodological adjustments with the use of ICT by analyzing Google Earth® software and site Laifi second pedagogical and ergonomic criteria. The methodology strategy used was the case study, to have a defined research object, and action research, once it launches to students the challenge of using the technologies mentioned above to chart a comprehensive profile of the studied area. The applied data collection instruments were: diagnosis and evaluation questionnaires, building a log file to the work of the students with the software, participant observation and focus group that permeated the learning events offered at work: seminar on remote sensing, initial presentation of the study area, workshop with Google Earth® software, field trip across the bay of Paranaguá, literature and socialization of results in a social network called Laifi and a wall to meet the school community. It was observed that most students had no knowledge about the area, but his interest was increasing during the development of the work, bringing suggestions for discussion and exploring other areas of knowledge, demonstrating the interdisciplinary potential and contextualizing of ICT used. It was also possible to identify the development of skills and abilities of students at work. Are research products: a didactic sequence, posting Laifi in the category education and culture and a tutorial for using the software that can be adapted by teachers according to desired area.

Exploring the practice of quality control in the onscreen marking of ordinary level Biology in ZimbabweMasiri, Ebba 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the practice of quality control in the onscreen marking (OSM) environment of Biology (5008) examinations between 2013 and 2017. Examination marking is gradually being migrating from paper-based marking (PBM) to OSM in a bid to improve the efficiency and quality of marking. The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) introduced OSM for some O Level subjects in June 2012, in a context characterised by a persistent economic crisis, patchy internet coverage, erratic power supplies and low digital literacy, among other challenges. The Council encountered some difficulties related to quality control, which triggered this qualitative instrumental single case study that was informed by the ontology, epistemology, methods and axiology of the constructivist philosophy. Data were collected through face-to-face and focus group interviews on the WhatsApp platform with 4 subject managers, 11 senior markers and 18 normal markers, and through document review. The findings of the study suggest that the quality of marking was influenced by the context in which the examinations were marked. The socio-political climate that prevailed in Zimbabwe impacted on the technological infrastructure for the OSM and the digital literacy of the examination personnel. The capacity of the examiners to work in the OSM environment was influenced by knowledge and skills transfer from training and standardisation to the live marking. The quality of marking was monitored by the seeds approach to script moderation, automatically generated reports and audit trails, and escalation of problem scripts. It was also influenced by the structure of the question papers, cognitive demands of the questions and mark schemes on the examiners, spaces provided for candidates’ responses and mark scheme features such as language and marks to marking points ratio. The assessment framework provided by the syllabus guided the design and marking of Biology examinations. From these findings, a framework that could guide the practice of quality control in the OSM environment was formulated. OSM technology could enhance the quality of marking Biology examinations, thereby eliminating challenges associated with PBM. Some of the opportunities were, however, reduced by the challenges encountered during the OSM of the examinations. It is recommended that ZIMSEC put in place policies and procedures that could guide specific quality control activities in the OSM environment and establish computer centres in the provincial capital towns.
