A contextual interpretation of Archbishop Janani Luwum's model of non-violence resistance and church-state relations in contemporary Uganda.January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is aimed at making a contextual interpretation of Luwum’s model of non-violent resistance and church-state relations in contemporary Uganda. The thesis reconstructs Archbishop Luwum’s life and explores the roots and the formative factors that shaped his thoughts and actions. It notes that the influence of the Acholi culture, early school life, the early Ugandan martyrs, Balokole theology, his theological studies, his ecclesiastical position, his parents and the writings and works of Martin Luther King Jr. shaped and refined his worldview. All of these factors provided grounding for his political and theological articulations of non-violent resistance and church-state relations. The thesis argues the principles of non-violent resistance are in harmony with the Christian understanding of shalom. Thus the church which upholds the principle of justice, love, truth and suffering will find non-violent resistance models an important tool for fighting injustices. With regard to injustice in the Ugandan context the thesis identifies and examined Amin’s ghosts such as the politics of dominance, corruption; a militaristic tradition and a culture of guns, religious conflicts and other problems which have continued to haunt the current Uganda. All of these can be confronted by the church using non-violence resistance model. The study argues that if this is going to be effective, the Anglican Church needs to embrace a pastoral hermeneutic based on non-violence resistance which can enable the church to be involved in social transformation without being co-opted by the state. In view of this, the study finds that through the principles of the non-violence resistance model the church can advocate for reconciliation and for the formation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to facilitate healing, confessing the past atrocities, identifying of victims and model of non-violence. To make recommendations for possible reparation, and processing the application for amnesty and indemnity so as to prevent the future human rights violations. This will be the beginning of fostering reconciliation in Uganda and establishing justice using non-violent means. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2008.

The construction of episcopal identity : the meaning and function of episcopal depictions within Latin saints' lives of the long twelfth centuryMesley, Matthew Michael January 2009 (has links)
My PhD offers a reassessment of the representation of English bishops within episcopal vitae composed between 1093 and 1214. It argues that the depiction of episcopal sanctity was shaped by the expectations of the community for which these texts were written and the hagiographer’s specific causa scribendi (reasons for writing). Through an investigation of four distinct Latin episcopal saints’ lives, I investigate the relationship between hagiographical function, episcopal identity and patronage by setting each text within its specific institutional and historical context. The vitae I have selected are: Faricius of Arezzo’s life of Aldhelm (c.1093-1099), William Wycombe’s life of Robert Bethune (c.1148-1150) and Gerald of Wales’s lives of Remigius (c.1198-1199) and Hugh of Avalon (c.1210-1214).

Padres conciliares brasileiros no Vaticano II: participação e prosopografia - 1959-1965.Beozzo, José Oscar 16 April 2001 (has links)
The thesis studies the participation of the Brazilian episcopate in the Second Vatican Council, convoked and inaugurated by Pope John XXIII (1959-1963), continued and concluded by Paul VI (1963-1965): the pre-preparatory phase (1959-1960), with the replies (vota) of the bishops and prelates to the Roman consultation; the preparatory phase, with the work done in the preparatory commissions (1960-1962) and the conciliar phase, with its four periods, and with the interventions in the Plenary Sessions of the Council or submitted in writing (1962-1965). The thesis also analyses other aspects of the life and activities of the Brazilian episcopate in Rome: where the bishops stayed, where they found support; how they were linked into the various net-works that were formed before and during the Council; the promoting of the events that went under the title of the Domus Mariae Conferences, of the Messages to the Brazilian People; the elaboration of the Emergency Plan for the Church in Brazil (PE 1962) and the steps taken to ensure the reception of the Council, with the Joint Pastoral Plan (PPC 1965). It finishes with a prosopography of all the Brazilian bishops and prelates who had the right, not always exercised, of participating in the various stages of the Council; a bibliography and iconography.

Poder e palavra: discursos, contendas e direito de padroado em Mariana (1748-1764) / Power and word: speeches, strife and law of patronate in Mariana (1748-1764)Santos, Patricia Ferreira dos 06 December 2007 (has links)
After the publication of the Council of Trento, made between 1545 and 1563, the Catholic Church made an effort to demonstrate, in the pastoral practices, the council answers to the heretical and protestant theories. Paradoxically, in the Portugal domains, the endorsement of the catholic and tridentino worship, which guided the evangelization work controlled by the Kingdom of Portugal, was very affected by the political atmosphere of that time and by the effects of the Royal Patronate. These contradictions are analyzed by studying the pastoral letters emitted by Bishop Dom Frei Manoel da Cruz, as well as the administrative correspondence of royal authorities. They show that in the 1700\'s Minas Gerais, contentions and inflamed discourses marked the pastoral action with the conflict sign.
