In this thesis the structure of the nominal group in Black South African English (BSAfE)
is investigated by means of a comparison of data from the Tswana Learner English
Corpus (TLEC) and the Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS). Both
corpora consist of student essays and are sub-corpora of the International Corpus of
Learner English (ICLE). The TLEC represents a non-native variety of English, namely
BSAfE, while LOCNESS represents native English from the United States and the
United Kingdom.
In the existing literature there are observations about and examples of (non-standard)
characterizing features of BSAfE pertaining to nouns, determiners and quantifiers (e.g.
Gough 1996), but until now, no in-depth study of the grammar of the nominal group in
BSAfE has been undertaken. This study is an attempt to fill that gap. I present a
description of the grammatical features of BSAfE observed in the corpus data in terms
of linguistic functions and without assuming that they are errors or evidence of
deficiencies. Though the approach is comparative (in the sense that a control corpus is
used), it is primarily descriptive and non-normative, and as such, function-based. This
study is conducted within the theoretical framework of functional linguistics, drawing on
systemic functional linguistics as well as other functional and cognitive approaches to
language.
The specifying functions that the nominal group and its elements may fulfill form the
basis of the descriptive framework. These functions are (1) the type-specifying function
of the noun, (2) the (referent-)specifying function of the determiner, (3) quantification
and (4) quality specification by modifiers and complements. The type-specifying
function of the noun is particularly relevant in Chapter 4, which deals with the
grammatical patterns of the noun people, although it also informs analyses in Chapters
5 and 6 which deal with determiners and quantification respectively. Quality
specification is especially relevant in the description of the grammatical patterns of the
noun people.
The noun people is the most frequent noun in each of the corpora, but is at the same
time a positive keyword in the TLEC, which means that it occurs much more frequently
in the TLEC than in LOCNESS. Analysis of the full corpus concordances of this noun
provides much evidence of anti-deletion in BSAfE (as first postulated by Mesthrie, 2006) and also sheds some light on left dislocation patterns involving the noun people
(cf. Mesthrie, 1997). This analysis also reveals unique uses of the definite article and
certain quantifying constructions in the TLEC data, which are investigated in the next
two analysis chapters.
A comparison of concordance samples of the articles indicates that the
definite/indefinite distinction is made in both corpora and that there is not enough
corpus evidence to postulate that there is a different system underlying the choice of
article in BSAfE, such as a system based principally on the specific/non-specific
distinction, as postulated by Platt, Weber and Ho (1984) for New Englishes in general.
Analysis of the concordances of demonstrative and possessive determiners indicate
that these determiners are used proportionally more frequently in the TLEC than in
LOCNESS. Concordances of the words that are normally classified as quantifiers
indicate that there are many more partitive-of quantifying constructions in the TLEC
than in LOCNESS. The words some and most are positive keywords in the TLEC.
After analyses of their concordances, it is concluded that their relative frequency can
be attributed to the fact that some is often used merely as an indefinite marker and that
most is often used as a synonym for many.
The study shows that BSAfE largely shares its general grammar of the nominal group
with other (including native) varieties of English, but at a finer level of analysis, some
characteristic constructions and uses are detected. The corpus data indicate that the
unique constructions in the TLEC data are mostly functionally motivated. These
constructions represent conventionalized innovations in the sense used by Van Rooy

Iron status, anthropometric status and cognitive performance of black African school children aged 6–11 years in the Klerksdorp area / Taljaard CTaljaard, Christine January 1900 (has links)
AIM
Poor iron status and under–nutrition among children are of concern not only in South Africa but worldwide. Both independent and combined associations between poor iron status, under–nutrition and cognitive development and function have been investigated. This mini–dissertation investigated possible associations between iron status indicators, anthropometric nutritional status and cognitive performance in the Beverage Fortified with Micronutrients (BeForMi) study population (black South African children aged 6–11 years in the North–West province of South Africa).
METHODS
The study was cross–sectional and based on the BeForMi study baseline data. Primary school children (n = 414) with the highest serum transferrin receptor (STR) and zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP) levels were included. Anthropometric z–scores - BMI–for–age (BAZ), height–for–age (HAZ), and weight–for–age (WAZ) - and iron status indicators - haemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin (SF), STR and ZnPP - were determined. The Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children, Second edition (KABC–II) was used to generate cognitive scores.
RESULTS
Fourteen percent of children were underweight (WAZ <= 2 SDs), 12.8% stunted (HAZ <= 2 SDs) and 8.4% wasted (BAZ <= 2 SDs). Of the children, 7.1% were anaemic (Hb < 11.5 g/dL), 13% iron depleted (Hb < 11.5 g/dL and SF < 12 ug/L) and 2.7% had iron deficiency anaemia (Hb < 11.5 g/dL and SF < 12 ug/L). Low iron stores (SF < 12 ug/L) were observed in 15.7% of the children. Positive correlations were found between SF and WAZ (r = 0.1, p = 0.047), Hb and HAZ (r = 0.13, p = 0.007) and WAZ (r = 0.13, p = 0.009). Positive correlations with small effect sizes were observed between some cognitive scores and z–scores (p < 0.05, r–value range 0.10 – 0.24). Negative correlations with small effect sizes were observed for the subtests Triangles and Rover (both subtests on simultaneous processing) with Hb (p = 0.008, r = –0.13) and SF (p = 0.04, r = –0.1) respectively. Higher HAZ, WAZ and education level of the head of household were all significantly associated with the likelihood that a child would fall within the upper quartile of Hb values in our study group (p = 0.036, p = 0.032 and p = 0.036 respectively).
CONCLUSION
The results suggested that under–nutrition was positively associated with poor iron status and lower cognitive scores in this study population. Further research, investigating specific effects of poor iron status at different stages of growth and the relationship with cognitive function later in life may help explain the negative correlations observed between current iron status indicators and cognitive scores. / Thesis (M.Sc (Dietetics))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Factors determining the composition of a public cord blood stem cell bank including HLA diversityMellet, Juanita January 2013 (has links)
The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is the most polymorphic region in the human genome and accounts for more than 10% of human diversity. This region plays an important role in matching donors and recipients for transplantation. The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) does not reflect the demographics of the South African population. The large number of polymorphisms resulting from HLA diversity in the Black South African population and their limited representation in the SABMR reduce the chances of finding adequate matches between donors and recipients in this group. Umbilical cord blood is an alternative to bone marrow for the treatment of fatal diseases. Less strict HLA matching is required due to the naive nature of the T cells in cord blood. A public umbilical cord blood bank is a necessity in trying to cater for the diverse population in South Africa. However, the ethnic diversity of the South African population poses a great challenge in constituting a public umbilical cord blood bank that is representative of the entire population. The Roche designed next generation sequencing (NGS) high resolution (HR) HLA typing kit enables sequencing of additional HLA exons and could improve the degree of matching between individuals to ultimately decrease adverse reactions. An extensive study of the literature was performed to establish the demographics, linguistics, and HLA diversity of the South African population to determine how a public cord blood bank should be constituted. In addition, HLA genotyping was performed by 454 NGS on 20 samples that had previously been HLA typed by conventional methods. The 454 NGS technique made use of a Roche designed medium and high resolution HLA typing kit to genotype the samples. It was possible to assign accurate genotypes to 95.5% of the loci of interest for the total number of 20 samples using the MR kit, compared with 98.5% using the HR kit. In conclusion, the present study indicates the extreme HLA diversity in the South African population, and therefore, recommends constituting the first public umbilical cord blood bank in Gauteng on the basis of race or major ethnic groupings. A minimum number of 10 000 cord blood units is needed to initiate the bank. Furthermore, the 454 NGS platform together with the HR HLA typing kit display potential as an alternative method to be used in a public cord blood bank, as well as routine clinical and diagnostic laboratories, to ultimately improve HLA matching between donors and recipients. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Immunology / unrestricted

Nasal aperture shape and its application for estimating ancestry in modern South AfricansMcDowell, Jennifer Leigh 08 July 2012 (has links)
With both a heterogeneous population and a large number of unidentified persons in South Africa, an accurate method to estimate ancestry is needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate variation in nasal aperture shape in black, white and coloured South Africans, using linear measures and geometric morphometrics (GM), the latter which includes both procrustes analysis (GPA) and elliptical fourier analysis (EFA). To test statistical significance among groups, discriminant function analysis (DFA) and principal component analysis (PCA) was used. A total of 310 (164 male, 145 female) crania of black, white and coloured South Africans were used. Thirteen standard landmarks, namely, glabella, nasion, nasale superior, dacryon, nasale inferius, alare, most inferior nasal border and subspinale, were digitised with a MicroScribe G2™ (Immersion: San Jose, CA). Five linear measures, nasion-dacryon angle (NDA), nasal breadth (NLB), nasal height (NLH), inter-orbital breadth (DKB) and nasion-dacryon subtense (NDS), were calculated. For EFA, photographs were taken in a frontal plane of skulls that had been positioned in the Frankfort horizontal plane on a craniophore. All classification accuracies for all groups were better than chance. Using linear measures and GPA, black South Africans classified 55-71% correctly, coloured classified 53-61% correctly and whites classified 85-95% correctly. Black and coloured South Africans demonstrated bell-shaped nasal apertures with nasal spines superior to the inferior nasal border. White South Africans had pear-shaped nasal apertures with a nasal spine inferior of the inferior nasal border. Using EFA black South Africans classified 62% correctly. While coloured South Africans only classified 39% correctly, which demonstrates high within group variability. Due to their unique historical development, large variation (heterogeneity) within the coloured group was expected. White South Africans had the highest correct classification accuracy of 85%. For all methods, misclassification rarely occurred between white and non-white (black and coloured) groups and most difficulties arose in distinguishing non-white groups from each other. High rates of misclassification was also noted between sex designations within a group, which suggests less or an absence of sexual dimorphism for these variables The distinct separation of white South Africans may reflect the mid-to late 20th century political and social separation of white and non-white groups in South Africa. Nasal aperture shape, alone, is less useful for separating groups such that all groups have relatively intermediate nasal aperture shapes; however the pinched nasal bone structure of white South Africans clearly separates them from the other groups. When using nasal bone and aperture landmarks, linear measures are as accurate as the modern geometric techniques in distinguishing groups. All methods are feasible to use in the estimation of ancestry on modern South Africans, with craniometry a sensible solution as the data can be rapidly collected, accurately analysed and compared to current reference samples. Phonological awareness skills of a group of Grade 4 learners in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual education context with English as Language of Learning and Teaching (ELoLT)Vermaak, Coralie Elizabeth 30 October 2007 (has links)
Rationale: The importance of well developed phonological awareness and the effect of poor phonological awareness skills on reading and spelling have long been recognised. However, a dearth of research exists regarding populations in multi-cultural, multi-lingual contexts both nationally and internationally. This issue is of particular importance in the South African context where many Black learners in the school setting have no other choice than English as the Language of Learning and Teaching (ELoLT). Aim: The purpose of the study was to explore the effect of a multi-cultural, multi-lingual context on the English phonological awareness skills of a group of Black Grade 4 learners in a primary school setting in South Africa. Method: An exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design was implemented, which incorporated both quantitative and qualitative paradigms. An assessment battery consisting of formal and informal assessments was used to determine levels of development. The researcher endeavoured to find statistical correlations between the participants' phonological awareness skills on the one hand, and their phonological abilities, their expressive and receptive language abilities, and their reading and spelling abilities in ELoLT on the other. Participants: Fifteen Black Grade 4 learners, each with a Black language as mother tongue, who attended a mainstream school where English was the language of learning and teaching (ELoLT), participated in the study. The participants' ages ranged between 9 years 11 months, and 10 years 11 months. Results: The participants’ phonological abilities in English as LoLT showed that 47% of the participants produced the target consonants with a consonant approximation, and vowel approximations were produced by all of the participants in single words. All fifteen the participants’ expressive and receptive language abilities in English as their LoLT, were on a below-average level and their expressive language abilities were more advanced than their receptive language abilities. All the participants evidenced problems in terms of their phonological awareness skills. Based on the results obtained for reading decoding abilities, only one third of the participants could be considered to be readers of an average standard. The reading comprehension abilities of all the participants were on a lower level than those of first language speakers of Standard South African English. Furthermore, the participants’ spelling abilities in English as LoLT were not age-appropriate. Even though no significant correlation could be determined between the participants’ reading comprehension and phonological awareness skills (due to the fact that memory probably played a role in their reading comprehension), it was statistically determined that their poor phonological awareness skills could be associated with their below-average phonological, receptive and expressive language, reading decoding, and spelling abilities. Conclusions: The results of this research have implications for the role of speech-language therapists in terms of collaboration, prevention, assessment, and intervention where the development of these learners' phonological awareness skills is concerned. Clinical implications focus on the dissemination of information, therapy planning, and EAL learner support. INTRODUCTION AND AIM - Cardiovascular disease is globally a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality. It is caused by various factors, one of which is an abnormal haemostatic process. Fibrinogen is a haemostatic factor that is considered to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Elevated fibrinogen can be caused by environmental and genetic factors which increase the risk of the occurrence of thrombosis. The fibrinogen y' chain, which is one of the three chains of fibrinogen, has two different variants, the yA and y’. The presence of the fibrinogen y’ chain has been associated with thrombotic disorders. Many studies have investigated the fibrinogen variables in Caucasian individuals, but only a few such studies have been conducted on non-Caucasian individuals. The genetic diversity of ethnic groups differs and could cause differences in the fibrinogen variables between these groups. Fibrinogen is known to increase with age; therefore to explain changes over time in fibrinogen concentrations it was also important to investigate whether genetic determinants and possible gene–environment interactions influenced fibrinogen over time. In this study the main aim was to determine the change in the fibrinogen variables over a five-year period within a black South African cohort subdivided according to genotypes associated with fibrinogen variables, and to determine whether the observed changes were modulated by environmental factors.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS - Data [baseline (n=2010) and follow-up (n=1288)] were collected in the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study during 2005 and 2010 from apparently healthy black men and women aged between 35 and 65 years and residing in rural or urban settlements. Experimental methods included analysis of fibrinogen and fibrinogen y’ concentrations, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and determination of environmental factors associated with the fibrinogen variables. RESULTS - The fibrinogen variables increased significantly from 2005 to 2010 in both the rural and urban participants, as well as in both men and women. The major environmental factors that affected the fibrinogen variables were C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), body mass index (BMI), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), age, blood lipids, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tobacco use. Fibrinogen increased consistently from 2005 to 2010 in the respective genotypes of all SNPs analysed, except in the FGG 9340 T>C homozygous mutant carriers. Fibrinogen y’ also increased in general in most genotypes from 2005 to 2010, except in the FGG 10034 C>T mutant allele carriers, where a decrease was observed. It was determined that CRP was the only environmental factor that influenced the change in fibrinogen over time and that FGG 10034 C>T was the only SNP that influenced the change in fibrinogen y’ over the five years. Four gene–environment interactions also influenced fibrinogen on a cross-sectional level, i.e. FGA 2224 G>A with age, FGB Arg448Lys with HIV status, FGB 1643 C>T with urbanisation and FGB 1038 G>A with HbA1c. Only the FGG 9340 T>C with HbA1c interaction was found to predict change in fibrinogen concentrations over the five years.

The high value of good health in Africa and the serious threat to life posed by diseases that plague the African continent including South Africa, are highlighted in this thesis. The question whether the church in South Africa as a stakeholder in human development in Africa, contributes meaningfully to the continental and national vision of "a better life for all" or "good health for all" is posed and an attempt made to answer it. Operating from the Western world-view, the Hervormde Kerk in Suidelike Afrika (HKSA) is found not to be contributing meaningfully to the realisation of the African vision of "good health for all".
Resistance to cure and healing by means of Western medicine and pastoral care and counselling as well as a lack of spiritual and numerical growth in the HKSA are identified as consequences of the imposition of exclusively Western Christian theological formulations on the African church.
The assumption underlying this thesis is that ministry to the sick in the African mainline churches should recognise the role played by supernatural forces in the belief systems of Africans regarding health and illness. This assumption is based on the fact that theological formulations are socially influenced and constructed.
Following Zerfass' methodological model, this research examines the principles underlying the ministry to the sick in the HKSA and the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (NHKA); highlights the core African beliefs with regard to the health and illness discourse and practice; points out the shortcomings of the current ministry to the sick in the HKSA.
The findings of the investigation into the theological tradition and the results of the exploration of the literature on the African context are brought into the critical dialogue. On the strength of findings of the critical dialogue between the church's traditional theological theory and the results of the exploration of the literature on the African context, the church's healing ministry is recommended as a necessary part of the church's official task in a black South African context. / Practical Theology / D.Th. ‘A critical review of language errors in the writing of distance education students’ examines linguistic competence and investigates the language errors made by a heterogeneous group of 100 entry-level distance education university students with a view to improving their academic writing skills. The research follows a process of error identification and statistical analysis, and reviews intervention strategies based on the findings. Despite the continuing debates on the value of error correction, especially in relation to ‘World Englishes’, language accuracy remains a key factor in determining academic success. This is of particular concern in the South African multi-lingual context and in the light of the under-performance of South African students as evidenced in international comparative studies.
