A névoa do tempo: o pensamento utópico na trilogia crítico-religiosa de José Saramago / The times haze: the utopic thinking upon José Saramagos critical religious trilogyPaulo Victor de Souza Rocha 31 March 2014 (has links)
On José Saramagos critical religious trilogy, formed by the novels Memorial of the Convent, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Cain, the constant presence of an utopic way of thinking is perceptible. Thus it does not reveal itself primarily as an idealistic perception of an immutable reality. It is only when aiming at Ernst Blochs philosophical mindset that it appears as an acute awareness on both historical process and libertary practice. Through the dynamic constitution of this conscience, it is possible to outline the interactive encounter of times: a contemporary and rebuilt past, a present time full of ideological activism and most important of all, the conscience of an open, concrete and possible future. On those novels, this possibility enables a human craving for radical changes on the effective order feasible. This encounter of times, from an esthetic literary point of view, takes shape essentially through parody: the constant criticizing of icons and themes coming from the Judeo-Christian universe. Either on the heated images presented, on the mocked conceptual framework, or even on the hybrid constitution of the novel, which destroys the totalitarian tenor of a traditional narrative, José Saramago seems to draw out of religious archetypes a seditious intensity where, on the fictional weaving elaborated, he teases and questions the metaphysical construction supported by centuries of Jewish and Christian models. On a contemporary context of the novels, this revisited past reading process points out not only the impossibility of an all-absorving worldview existing on the occidental religion model but also to a modern world existential rebuilding process, considering that, through frustrated dreams from that past, an enabling of utopic desires trapped into collective memory would be possible. Therefore, the utopic thinking, on Saramagos trilogy, turns into mist: on the multiple and complex field of novel, a past- present- future dialectic is revealed, which through its dynamic constitution manages and keeps the novum, the not yet

do meio.
A partir
induzida (EIT).

A solução analítica

Spectroscopy of artificial atoms and moleculesTuorila, J. (Jani) 25 May 2010 (has links)
Abstract
Elementary experiments of atomic physics and quantum optics can be reproduced on a circuit board using elements built of superconducting materials. Such systems can show discrete energy levels similar to those of atoms. With respect to their natural cousins, the enhanced controllability of these ‘artificial atoms’ allows the testing of the laws of physics in a novel range of parameters. Also, the study of such systems is important for their proposed use as the quantum bits (qubits) of the foreseen quantum computer.
In this thesis, we have studied an artificial atom coupled with a harmonic oscillator formed by an LC-resonator. At the quantum limit, the interaction between the two can be shown to mimic that of ordinary matter and light. The properties of the system were studied by measuring the reflected signal in a capacitively coupled transmission line. In atomic physics, this has an analogy with the absorption spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. To simulate such measurements, we have derived the corresponding equations of motion using the quantum network theory and the semi-classical approximation. The calculated absorption spectrum shows a good agreement with the experimental data. By extracting the power consumption in different parts of the circuit, we have calculated the energy flow between the atom and the oscillator. It shows that, in a certain parameter range, the absorption spectrum obeys the Franck-Condon principle, and can be interpreted in terms of vibronic transitions of a diatomic molecule.
A coupling with a radiation field shifts the spectral lines of an atom. In our system, the interaction between the atom and the field is nonlinear, and we have shown that a strong monochromatic driving results in energy shifts unforeseen in natural or, even, other artificial atoms. We have used the Floquet method to calculate the quasienergies of the coupled system of atom and field. The oscillator was treated as a small perturbation probing the quasienergies, and the resulting absorption spectrum agrees with the reflection measurement.

Alfred Hitchcock : the master of adaptationBass, Thomas William January 2015 (has links)
My research explores Alfred Hitchcock’s use of adaptation and the impact that this has on his status as an ‘auteur’. The aim, through looking at a cross section of his work, is to produce the basis for an adaptation model that could be used to examine his entire body of work, accounting for all influences, extratextual references, intertextualities, sequels, remakes and most importantly, other authors. By exploring Hitchcock’s use of the theatrical (a subject that is often ignored) and his lesser earlier films, we can begin to form the foundations for this model. By looking at his adaptation of a particular author and the textual evolution of one of his most iconic films, we are able to put this model to the test. Chapter one is the introduction, which looks at Hitchcock’s status within cinematic history, while also examining the current state of Hitchcock scholarship, auteur theory and adaptations studies. Chapter two examines the theatrical adaptations of Hitchcock’s British period, specifically shining light upon texts that are often ignored or maligned by theoretical study. Chapter three discusses the American theatrical adaptations, specifically looking at the role of the ‘meta-text’ and Hitchcock’s fascination with recreating the theatrical. Chapter four explores Hitchcock’s relationship with Daphne du Maurier, examining his adaptation of her work, overall themes, characters and ideologies. This chapter also presents an original reading of The Birds, which examines how Hitchcock’s film is more indebted to Du Maurier’s novels than her shot story of avian horror. Chapter five examines the evolution of Psycho. Hitchcock’s adaptation of, amongst others, Robert Bloch and Henri-Georges Clouzot will be discussed, as will the multiple sequels, remakes and exploitations that, in turn, adapt his own film. It will be argued that these texts are in fact adapting Psycho’s influences and origins as much as the film itself. Chapter six is the conclusion where the findings are analysed and the model of adaptation, which positions Hitchcock at the centre as a collector of texts is discussed. In occupying this position the notion of him as an ‘auteur’ is erased and instead he becomes the ‘Master of Adaptation’.

Non-Equilibrium Many-Body Influence on Mode-Locked Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting LasersKilen, Isak Ragnvald, Kilen, Isak Ragnvald January 2017 (has links)
Vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers are ideal testbeds for studying the influence of the non-equilibrium many-body dynamics on mode locking. As we will show in this thesis, ultra short pulse generation involves a marked departure from Fermi carrier distributions assumed in prior theoretical studies. A quantitative model of the mode locking dynamics is presented, where the semiconductor Bloch equations with Maxwell’s equation are coupled, in order to study the influences of quantum well carrier scattering on mode locking dynamics. This is the first work where the full model is solved without adiabatically eliminating the microscopic polarizations. In many instances we find that higher order correlation contributions (e.g. polarization dephasing, carrier scattering, and screening) can be represented by rate models, with the effective rates extracted at the level of second Born-Markov approximations. In other circumstances, such as continuous wave multi-wavelength lasing, we are forced to fully include these higher correlation terms. In this thesis we identify the key contributors that control mode locking dynamics, the stability of single pulse mode-locking, and the influence of higher order correlation in sustaining multi-wavelength continuous wave operation.

Tell Sir Thomas More We've Got Another Failed Attempt: Utopia and the Burning Man ProjectKovacik, Gracen Lila 01 January 2015 (has links)
Burning Man, a weeklong experience in Black Rock Desert, Nevada, has become an oasis for those looking to escape the corporatized grasp of modern culture. Burning Man serves as a reprieve from judgment and allows participants to embrace and perform their inner identities. The intensions of Burning Man have been widely debated, from scholars concentrating on the rejection of consumerism to analyzing sacred space and religious connectivity for festivalgoers. What deserves further analysis, however, is the utopian nature of the event. I will explore previous utopian attempts--literary, political, etc.--and define what characteristics from those societies were present during the inception and following early years of Burning Man. Using the work of Ernst Bloch I will establish Burning Man as a not-yet-conscious utopia, a product of Larry Harvey's vision, and define the increasingly imminent threats to the event's utopianism. The segregation of ideas at Burning Man, between veteran Burners and newcomers, is attributed to the perpetual struggle to balance and create meaning within a society designed to provide autonomy for its citizens. I will look at how changes in popularity and population have transformed the once utopian retreat into an amalgam of conflicting ethos. I argue that this once thriving counterculture is facing an extreme shift away from the original structure of the event in terms of meaning, experience, and understanding.

Contribution to peroidic homogenization of a spectral problem and of the wave equation / Contribution à l'homogénéisation périodique d'un problème spectral et de l'équation d'ondeNguyen, Thi trang 03 December 2014 (has links)
In this dissertation, we present the periodic homogenization of a spectral problem and the waveequation with periodic rapidly varying coefficients in a bounded domain. The asymptotic behavioris addressed based on a method of Bloch wave homogenization. It allows modeling both the lowand high frequency waves. The low frequency part is well-known and it is not a new point here.In the opposite, the high frequency part of the model, which represents oscillations occurringat the microscopic and macroscopic scales, was not well understood. Especially, the boundaryconditions of the high-frequency macroscopic equation established in [36] were not known prior to thecommencement of thesis. The latter brings three main contributions. The first two contributions, areabout the asymptotic behavior of the periodic homogenization of the spectral problem and waveequation in one-dimension. The third contribution consists in an extension of the model for thespectral problem to a thin two-dimensional bounded strip Ω = (0; _) _ (0; ") _ R2. The homogenizationresult includes boundary layer effects occurring in the boundary conditions of the high-frequencymacroscopic equation.
