This study deals with the ethnopolitical mobilization among the Sami in Sweden during the first half of the 20th century. The investigation focus on why this mobilization took place, the demands the Sami made, and the strategies used to achieve these goals. Opposition towards the Swedish Sami policy was the most important reason for the political mobilization among the Sami. Both the formation of the Sami policy at the central administrative level, and the implementation of the policy at the regional and local level by the Lapp administration were criticised. During the first half of the period of investigation the Sami protests focused on policy decisions at central government level. During the later half of the period, it was the actions of the Lapp administration that triggered Sami activity. The central demands brought forward by the Sami movement concerned the position of the Sami in Swedish society. At the beginning of the period the Swedish Sami policy was based on the so called "Lapp shall remain Lapp" ideology. The Sami were looked upon as a reindeer herders by nature, who were weak and could not protect themselves against civilization, which was viewed as a threat to the cultural survival of the Sami. Therefore, they were to be protected by being segregated from the surrounding society. Only the reindeer herding Sami, however, were considered to be Sami which meant that a majority of the Sami population was not included in the Swedish Sami policy. A cultural boundary was drawn, which separated the Sami population into two large segments. Because of this, the main demands of the Sami movement were that the Sami should be granted an equal position in the Swedish society and that the Sami policy should include more aspects than just reindeer herding.Two main strategies were adopted by the Sami leaders to achieve the goals of the Sami movement. The first was to try to create a network of local Sami societies within a national Sami organization. As in Swedish society group interests were represented by a number of different organizations, Sami organizations were a precondition if the Sami were to be able to hold a dialogue with the Swedish authorities. However, during the period of investigation the Sami movement failed in its attempts to form a national Sami organization, which weakened the movement. The second strategy was directed at achieving more limited gains through goal-oriented actions, where the Sami were mobilized for shorter periods behind different demands. This second strategy was more successful during the period of investigation. However, ultimately the creation of a national Sami organization, was found to be a requirement if the Sami movement was to be able to influence the Swedish Sami policy. The formation of Svenska Samernas Riksförbund (National Union of the Swedish Sami) in 1950 was therefore an important step for the Sami movement.

Coping with boundaries - A study on the interaction between work and non-work life in home-based telework

The increase of women’s labor force participation, the diversity of family constellations, many men’s increased participation in childcare, and the development of flexible working arrangements have stimulated research on the relationship between work and non-work. In this thesis, the interaction between work and non-work is examined in the case of home-based telework, an example of flexible working arrangement. Because of the disappearance or blurring of the traditional boundaries in time and space, the consequences of these working conditions for individuals need to be analyzed. The overall aim of this thesis is to study the interaction between work and non-work in home-based telework and to analyze the following issues: - conflict versus facilitation as related to the segmentation and integration of work/non-work domains - the nature and role of boundaries - the physical and mental aspects of work activities within the domains The thesis is based on quantitative as well as qualitative data. In general, the results show that the domains of work and non-work do interact with each other in various ways and dimensions. The employees reported some degree of overlap spatially, temporally, and mentally, and limited overlap was preferred by the majority. The results show the importance of boundaries, as they are needed in order to bring structure and legitimacy to the work (carried out in the home/private domain) and to detach from work. The teleworking women reported less effective restoration than the non-teleworking women, while the teleworking men reported slightly more effective restoration than the non-teleworking men. Generally, the results showed that work tended to intrude more on family and non-work than vice versa. Individuals who experienced conflict between the domains of work and non-work also reported a lower degree of life satisfaction. Significant associations were found between facilitation (positive spillover) and life satisfaction and recovery.

This dissertation is a study of the changing living conditions for the Sami in Swedish Såpmi (Samiland) throughout the twentieth century with an analysis based on a gender and ethnic perspective. At the turn of the century, the Sami lived as nomadic reindeer herders and were primarily self- sufficient. This changed as the reindeer herders shifted from a self-sufficient lifestyle to a money economy tor a variety of reasons. Over time they became more integrated in the dominant Swedish society and even more dependent on it. Reindeer herding has become increasingly mechanized since the I960's with rationalizations as a result. Even in to the 1990's the industry was the object of streamlining ettorts. A process of masculinization has also occurred and today's reindeer herding is a distinctly male coded profession. Women do not regularly participate in the daily work of reindeer breeding and their ability to have any direct influence on the herding districts (sameby) is limited. This is also largely true in terms of the Sami Parliament, the Sami popularly elected body. The Sami population has experienced unfavorable special legislation and regulation from the State. The population was divided into several different categories with different rights. Sami women were marginalized two-fold and subordinated, partly because of their ethnic affiliation (as Sami) and partly because of their sex (as women). This continues to be true today. The analysis of gender division of labor shows that a married couple had their own autonomous areas of power within the household. The wife was however still subordinate to her husband in his role as master of the family. The older reindeer herding society was not noted for its equality. There was a distinct hierarchy based on sex, age, and social status. Division of labor in modern reindeer breeding is in principle based on the same normative system as the older nomadic society. The study of the ethnic processes in Såpmi shows among other things that from a Sami perspective, a person is Sami who is related to other Sami and whose actions are based on a Sami identity. It is also clear today that there are many different Sami identities, that an individual person draws from a number of such identities and that it is the context that determines which of these are active in any given situation. The Sami identity is sex-based, i.e. there is a difference between a "male Sami" and a "female Sami." Sami women, unlike Sami men, cannot be politically active while also being active based on their sexual identity. Were they to do so, they would be excluded by definition from their ethnic group. Sami women must therefore subordinate themselves as women to be "genuine" Sami. They thereby contribute to their own marginalization and help maintain their own subordinated position in the Sami society. / digitalisering@umu

The principle of coordinate invariance states that all physical laws must be formulated in a mathematical form that is independent of the geometrical properties of any particular coordinate system. Embracing this principle is the key to understand how to systematically incorporate curved material interfaces into a numerical solution of Maxwell’s equations. This dissertation describes how to generate a coordinate invariant representation of Maxwell’s equations in differential form, and it demonstrates why employing such representation is crucial to the development of robust finite-difference discretisations with consistent global error properties. As part of this process, two original contributions are presented that address the issue of constructing finite-difference approximations at the locations of material interfaces. The first contribution is a domain-decomposition procedure to enforce the tangential field continuity conditions with a second-order local truncation error that can be applied in 2-D or 3-D. The second contribution is a similar domain-decomposition procedure that enforces the tangential field continuity conditions with a local truncation of order 2L—where L is an integer greater or equal to one—but that can only be applied in 1-D. To conclude, the dissertation also describes the interesting connection that exists between the use of a coordinate invariant representation of Maxwell’s equations to design artificial materials and the use of the same representation to model curved material interfaces in a finite-difference discretisation.

The ecological effects of the cleared boundaries of Bruce Peninsula National Park

Bruce Peninsula National Park (BPNP) clears a 2 m swath of trees on the boundary in order to make it clear when one is entering the park from any neighbouring land; this in particular aims to protect the park and its inhabitants from illegal actions such as hunting and logging. This study looks at the ecological effects of this practice by measuring various microclimate variables and the abundance of eastern redback salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) on the boundary and comparing these measurements to parallel transects at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 m. Because it is a small linear development, it is then compared to other types of linear developments, such as roads, trails, and pipelines. The microclimate variables of air temperature, slug abundance, canopy cover, soil pH, total cover area, litter depth, and relative humidity were all significantly affected (p<0.05) up to 10 m into the adjacent forest, indicating that the cleared boundaries do change the surrounding microclimate. Soil pH, downed woody cover area, litter depth, and canopy cover were significantly affected (p<0.05) up to 5 m away from the boundary. Sixty hectares, or 0.4%, of the land area of BPNP is thus affected by the microclimate changes caused by the cleared boundary. These effects are similar to those found for other narrow, vegetated linear developments such as trails. Over double the number of salamanders were found on the boundary as compared to in the forest; this is due to higher cover area availability on the cleared boundary from the felled trees. Therefore, the boundary does not act as a barrier to eastern redback salamander movement, nor does it fragment the local population. Salamander abundance was best explained by the amount of cover area, snail abundance, and the dominant type of vegetation present along transects. It was also found in an additional study that salamander abundance tended to increase with increasing days since the last precipitation event, contrary to most woodland salamander monitoring protocols and methods. The boundaries were seen also to be used by hunters and recreationalists through incidental observations of human disturbance. This increased access to remote areas of the park through use of the cleared boundaries is an issue that requires further study, as the boundary itself may be leading to an increase in illegal activity. Recommendations to BPNP include leaving downed woody cover on the boundary, minimizing the boundary width, reducing lines of sight, decreasing accessibility, increasing landowner and park staff education, communicating with adjacent landowners, and securing funding to complete and maintain the boundary clearing.

Is Smart Growth Fair Growth: Do Urban Growth Boundaries Keep out Racial Minorities?

As many American metropolitan areas spread outward, urban sociologists are interested in the effects of sprawl and in efforts to limit suburban expansion. To rein in urban sprawl, land use measures known as “smart growth initiatives” are gaining popularity. Urban growth boundaries are the particular type of initiative examined in this research. An urban growth boundary delineates where development is encouraged and where it is discouraged or prohibited. My first research question is whether urban growth boundaries contribute to the exclusion of racial minorities. I also explore whether urban growth boundaries affect residential segregation. I study 86 places throughout the U.S.: 43 matched pairs of places (with each pair comprised of a place with an urban growth boundary and a place without a boundary but otherwise similar to its partner). I also consider Atlanta, with no constraints on growth, and Portland, Oregon, a smart growth leader. Census data and residential segregation indexes from 1990 and 2000 for whites, blacks, and Hispanics are analyzed. The analysis consists of comparing change in the number of blacks and Hispanics due to in-migration and population growth in places with and without urban growth boundaries, and examining levels of segregation in them. I find that urban growth boundaries do not reduce blacks’ or Hispanics’ in-migration or population size. Also, the preponderance of the results supports the view that urban growth boundaries are not a cause of racial residential segregation.

Atomistic Simulations of Dislocation Nucleation in Single Crystals and Grain Boundaries

The objective of this research is to use atomistic simulations to investigate dislocation nucleation from grain boundaries in face-centered cubic aluminum and copper. This research primarily focuses on asymmetric tilt grain boundaries and has three main components. First, this research uses molecular statics simulations of the structure and energy of these faceted, dissociated grain boundary structures to show that Σ3 asymmetric boundaries can be decomposed into the structural units of the Σ3 symmetric tilt grain boundaries, i.e., the coherent and incoherent twin boundaries. Moreover, the energy for all Σ3 asymmetric boundaries is predicted with only the energies of the Σ3 symmetric boundaries and the inclination angle. Understanding the structure of these boundaries provides insight into dislocation nucleation from these boundaries. Further work into the structure and energy of other low order Σ asymmetric boundaries and the spatial distribution of free volume within the grain boundaries also provides insight into dislocation nucleation mechanisms. Second, this research uses molecular dynamics deformation simulations with uniaxial tension applied perpendicular to these boundaries to show that the dislocation nucleation mechanisms in asymmetric boundaries are highly dependent on the faceted, dissociated structure. Grain boundary dislocation sources can act as perfect sources/sinks for dislocations or may violate this premise by increasing the dislocation content of the boundary during nucleation. Furthermore, simulations under uniaxial tension and uniaxial compression show that nucleation of the second partial dislocation in copper exhibits tension-compression asymmetry. Third, this research explores the development of models that incorporate the resolved stress components on the slip system of dislocation nucleation to predict the atomic stress required for dislocation nucleation from single crystals and grain boundaries. Single crystal simulations of homogeneous dislocation nucleation help define the role of lattice orientation on the nucleation stress for grain boundaries. The resolved stress normal to the slip plane on which the dislocation nucleates plays an integral role in the dislocation nucleation stress and related mechanisms. In summary, the synthesis of various aspects of this work has provided improved understanding of how the grain boundary character influences dislocation nucleation in bicrystals, with possible implications for nanocrystalline materials.

Modeling and Characterization of the Elastic Behavior of Interfaces in Nanostructured Materials: From an Atomistic Description to a Continuum Approach

In this dissertation, an innovative approach combining continuum mechanics and atomistic simulations is exposed to develop a nanomechanics theory for modeling and predicting the macroscopic behavior of nanomaterials. This nanomechanics theory exhibits the simplicity of the continuum formulation while taking into account the discrete atomic structure and interaction near surfaces/interfaces. There are four primary objectives to this dissertation. First, theory of interfaces is revisited to better understand its behavior and effects on the overall behavior of nanostructures. Second, atomistic tools are provided in order to efficiently determine the properties of free surfaces and interfaces. Interface properties are reported in this work, with comparison to both theoretical and experimental characterizations of interfaces. Specifically, we report surface elastic properties of groups 10 11 transition metals as well as properties for low-CSL grain boundaries in copper. Third, we propose a continuum framework that casts the atomic level information into continuum quantities that can be used to analyze, model and simulate macroscopic behavior of nanostructured materials. In particular, we study the effects of surface free energy on the effective modulus of nano-particles, nanowires and nano-films as well as nanostructured crystalline materials and propose a general framework valid for any shape of nanostructural elements / nano-inclusions (integral forms) that characterizes the size-dependency of the elastic properties. This approach bridges the gap between discrete systems (atomic level interactions) and continuum mechanics. Finally this continuum outline is used to understand the effects of surfaces on the overall behavior of nano-size structural elements (particles, films, fibers, etc.) and nanostructured materials. More specifically we will discuss the impact of surface relaxation, surface elasticity and non-linearity of the underlying bulk on the properties nanostructured materials.
