The growth of Brazilian Baptist churches in metropolitan São Paulo, 1981-1990

Price, Donald Edward 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This work endeavors to analyze the growth of Brazilian Baptists in metropolitan Sao Paulo between the last two official censes. Protestants have been accused of not adapting to Brazilian culture, of organizing "miniconvents," rather than life and society-transforming communities, of having their roots so deeply embedded in their rural past that they are maladjusted to Brazilian urban life. Is this so? Has the result of over one hundred years of missionary effort been the production of a carbuncle within the Brazilian social fabric, a foreign body that must be rejected - as it rejects its host? Chapter two traces the history of Brazil, and of the insertion of Missionary Protestantism into the Brazilian social fabric. Special emphasis is given to the growth and development of the Brazilian Baptist Convention, especially in the State of Sao Paulo. Finally, the growth of the Brazilian Baptist churches in metropolitan Sao Paulo between the last two censes, 1981-1990, is analyzed. Brazilian Baptists have grown at better than twice the rate of the general population, especially in the urban, residential, communities. It would appear that Brazilian Baptists are well adapted to their environment, inasmuch as they are growing within the Brazilian urban context. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. The media impact of the 2014 FIFA World CUP in selected key marketsτм

Muresherwa, Gift January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / The hosting of 2014 FIFA World CupTM was an ideal opportunity for Brazil to enhance its international image. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact on Brazil and on Rio de Janeiro (as a host city and major tourist destination) of mainstream media reporting on the hosting of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM. It provides a picture of how Brazil and Rio de Janeiro were reported in selected newspapers at different stages of the event: pre-, lead-up, during, and post- the 2014 World Cup. The study also seeks to ascertain whether the major objectives of the Brazil World Cup bid were met in the hosting of this mega-event. A media content analysis was conducted in four key tourism markets: Argentina, USA, Germany and Portugal. These countries were chosen because they represent Brazil’s main tourism markets and reported significant numbers of ticket sales for the event. The methodology used was qualitative analysis, including content sourcing, content identification and the use of Leximancer, an analytic tool for large amounts of textual data. The study examined online newspapers with the largest readership and circulation numbers in the selected markets. In total, 1961 online newspaper articles relevant to Brazil’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World CupTM were analysed. The findings revealed both positive and negative sentiments associated with Brazil’s hosting of the event. A key finding from the analysis was that for all markets, there was a shift from relatively positive sentiment in the pre-World Cup period, to more negative sentiment in the lead-up, followed by a return to positive sentiment during and after the World Cup. Having shifted to a more negative view leading up to and during the event, the USA market was dominated by media attention to social unrest and corruption. The period immediately prior to the tournament recorded an increase in both positive and negative media coverage in the US, German and Portuguese markets, but became more positive in the Argentinian market. Thus, the lead-up period was particularly significant in all markets. Safety and security concerns expressed in the lead-up period decreased significantly during the hosting and post- periods, and a positive image of the country was noticeable in the international media. Therefore, while the positive sentiments emerging during the event should be capitalised on, Brazil should also address the lurking concerns and negative perceptions that continue despite its successful hosting of the mega-event. By doing this the nation can consolidate its brand’s position in a sustained and positive way. As different reporting tones were noticed in the different markets across the time periods, it becomes important to consider these changes in the future event marketing and positioning of Rio de Janeiro as the leading tourism destination and events capital for Brazil, especially in relation to Rio de Janeiro’s hosting of future events.

Tracing feminism in Brazil: locating gender, race and global power relations in Revista Estudos Feministas

Unknown Date (has links)
Women's movements and feminisms in Brazil have taken various forms throughout the years, contributing significantly to socio-political actions that favor gender justice. However, Brazilian feminisms remain on the margins of American academic discourse. In the United States, conceptualizations of feminism are often complicated by epistemological practices that treat certain political actions as feminist while dismissing others. The invisibility of Brazilian feminisms within feminist scholarship in the United States, therefore, justifies the need for further research on the topic. My research focuses on feminist articles published by Revista Estudos Feministas, one of the oldest and most well known feminist journals in Brazil. Using postcolonial, postmodern, and critical race feminist theories as a framework of analysis, my thesis investigates the theories and works utilized by feminists in Brazil. I argue that Brazilian feminisms both challenge and emulate the social, economic, and geopolitical orders that divide the world into Global North and South. / by Renata Rodrigues Bozzetto. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Tradição e renovação: a arquitetura dos mosteiros beneditinos contemporâneos no Brasil / Tradition and renewal: the contemporary architecture of benedictine monasteries in Brazil

Arruda, Valdir 23 April 2007 (has links)
Study about architecture of main Benedictine monasteries built in Brazil during second half of XXth. Century, when the concurrency of evolutive habits and new commentaries of religious monastic rules, lead to new meanings of the monastic building. From this renovation process an heterogeneous production was resulted, introducing changes in the traditional architectonic program of the monasteries, and to know them requires an specific and deeper analysis, because they have a few systematic data available. By the analysis of six contemporary and emblematic works from that production, a couple by Hans Broos, this study aims identify the architectonical contributions in the projects for Benedictine monasteries and to investigate their adequacy to the devises of a consecrated communitarian life, linked with liturgy and fine arts, clarifying basic requirements to a knowing and critics of this kind of production. Most of all, the study aims to contribute to an analysis of the process of renovation of Brazilian religious architecture, a very few researched theme in the panorama of national architectonic history.

When democracy is not enough : political freedoms and democratic deepening in Brazil and India

Gupta, Madhvi. January 2006 (has links)
The objective of this study is to understand the logic of popular mobilization in Sao Paulo (Brazil) and New Delhi (India) and to explain why subaltern groups use their political freedoms to mobilize on some issues and not on others. More specifically, the study attempts to address a puzzle: Why do the popular sectors not mobilize to make claims for health when the vast majority of the urban poor experience severe health deficits? My contention is that the nature of public discourse determines both the emergence of popular movements and the issues on which they engage in claims-making. Competing ideas about what democracy is and what it ought to be, the meaning of social justice, and the relationship between democracy and social justice, constitute the 'raw materials' around which mobilization frames are created. The empirical evidence presented in this study supports my claim that the nature of public discourse is crucial for democratic deepening from below. / Based on extensive field research in low-income communities in Sao Paulo and New Delhi, my study explains the differences and similarities in the political actions of the urban poor. In India, the near-absence of a public discourse on health accounts for the lack of mobilization by subaltern groups to seek improvements in their health situation. In contrast, I find that there has been a tradition of public discourse on health in Brazil since the 1970s when "external actors" such as doctors and progressive Church officials became engaged in social causes and contributed to the emergence of health movements. However, since Brazil's transition to democracy, this public discourse has fractured, becoming more receptive to "new" health issues such as violence, even though "old" health problems continue to persist. While the popular sectors experience the dual burden of "old" and "new" health problems, they are perceived to be the cause of many "new" health hazards like violence rather than its victims. The disengagement of "external actors" from "old" health issues and the widespread perception that the popular sectors are themselves to blame for the "new" health problems has inhibited popular mobilization for health in democratic Brazil.

Inelegibilidade decorrente da rejeição de contas de gestores públicos e a nova interpretação da súmula n. 01 do Tribunal Superior Eleitoral / Ineligibility due to rejection of accounts of public officials and the new interpretation of the summary paragraph n.01 of the top electoral court

George Ventura Morais 01 December 2008 (has links)
The dissertation was about the ineligibility resulting from rejection of accounts of public representatives and the new interpretation of the Court Orientation n 01 of the Superior Electoral Court. Although this Court Orientation has not been revoked, it was tried to demonstrate that its most recent interpretation is in the direction of the mitigation of the presumption of innocence, in conformity with the principle of administrative morality, as well as with the fundamental right and fourth generation guarantee of having honest and truthful delegates. The study justified and understood the reasons that correctly made the Court substitute the imperative condition of a desconstitutive judicial demand, combined with the concession of an emergency law order, aiming to reverse the effects of the ineligibility, allowing the deputy, who had his accounts disapproved by uncontested decision of the competent judicial court based on incurable irregularities, to run for office. Through detailed analysis of opening line g of incise I of the first article of Complementary Law n 64/90, that legally substantiates the suspension of the subjective right of being voted, it was intended to explain controversial questions on the necessary basis for an appropriate handling of the proper judicial measure to impugnate the candidate registration, under the penalty of preclusion. This judicial instrument was approached so that from the pronouncement of the Electoral Court could be withdrawn the most effectiveness expected from it, especially to exclude from an election anyone who does not have the minimal ethical values to represent society, proving that the feeling of purification of the elections reflects straightly the coherent position adopted by the Specialized Court
