Vass personlighet : En omtolkning av depåfynd / Sharp personality : A reinterpretation of depositions

Manasieva, Julia January 2024 (has links)
Hoards and the reason behind their depositions have long been research questions. The term has been defined differently by various authors. Several researchers have developed criteria for what constitutes a hoard, as well as whether it has been deposited for a sacred or profane purpose. Common for a ritual interpretation is that the deposition place has natural properties that are extraordinary, something watery environments are believed to possess. With the area of Östra Ljungby in the parish of Trolle-Ljungby, Skåne as the research area, the essay will compare the finds against these criteria. The material found have been discovered in both solid ground and wetlands, and consists largely of various types of axes, tools and daggers that are typologically dated to time periods from the Mesolithic to the Early Bronze Age. Based on a hypothesis concerning the personhood of water, a possible connection between the wetland hoards and folklore is explored. Temporal similarities and differences are analysed and discussed in order to further understand the continuity of the deposition sites. It can be concluded that several sacral depositions have been made in Östra Ljungby, where some have been made in the same place over long periods of time. Thus, there are signs that point to the study area having a continuous depositional tradition. Furthermore, there is a connection to customs made in order to protect oneself against näcken. However, such a connection is difficult to establish due to the difficulties in reconstructing prehistoric rituals and ideologies.

I karernas fotspår : En numismatisk studie av mynten från Zeushelgedomen Labraunda på Uppsala universitets myntkabinett / In the footsteps of the carians : A numismatic study of the coins from theSanctuary of Zeus at Uppsala university's coin cabinet

Lindmark, Jonathan January 2024 (has links)
This essay examines 62 coins from the archaeological excavation at the Zeus sanctuary Labraunda at Uppsala University's coin cabinet. The purpose of the essay is to understand the contact patterns that existed between the Zeus sanctuary and the outside world. But also to document and digitize the coins. The purpose is achieved through a network analysis based ona quantitative coin survey and the establishment of a digital coin catalog of the examined material. From the network analysis, a strong connection can be established between the sanctuary of Zeus and the city of Mylasa. It was the shrine's function as a regional power baseand strong connection to the Hekatomnids that formed the basis of the relationship. The coin material also confirms the extensive role of the sanctuary of Zeus during the 2nd century BC. as 33 of the coins examined date to that time. This contradicts a common interpretation which is that the amount of activity decreased in the sanctuary during the Hellenistic period. With the supplementary inscriptions, it is clear that Labraunda had an important status in the turbulentage that followed the death of Alexander the Great. The coins used within the sanctuary were mostly common bronze coins such as No. 501051 from Mylasa and No. 501065 from Stratonikeia.

Effect of a Simulated Butterfly Valve on the Erosion-Corrosion Rate of Nickel Aluminum Bronze Alloys in Highly Turbulent Seawater

Taylor, Ryan Chandler 29 June 2018 (has links)
Nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) alloys are used in naval and maritime applications for their excellent corrosion resistance under the influence of seawater. One application involves the use of a NAB butterfly valve within a NAB fluid line to control fluid flow of seawater. Due to the chaotic environment, the corrosion rate of the NAB tubing downstream from the valve increases significantly. The disc angle at which the valve alters fluid flow causes an increase in the fluid velocity and an increase in the turbulence produced on the downstream side of the valve. These fluid conditions contribute to the increase in the corrosion rate of the NAB piping downstream from the valve. This thesis aims to characterize how the change in the disc angle of the butterfly valve causes a change in the erosion-corrosion rate of NAB downstream from the valve. A butterfly valve is simulated using orifice plates of varying diameters to mimic flow conditions at different disc angles. An orifice plate is a simple device with a hole in its center that is designed to restrict fluid flow across a fluid line. Under the same hydrodynamic conditions, the orifice produces nearly the exact same flow coefficients as the valve. At a volumetric flowrate of 0.00757 m^3/s a total of eight locations found along the liquid/metal interface produced pitting sites. The average passivation layer thickness is also measured. / Master of Science / Nickel aluminum bronze alloys are used within the naval and maritime industries for many different types of applications. The main use of this material as studied within this project entailed the use of this alloy within a piping structure downstream from a type of butterfly valve. When seawater flows through this piping structure, the valve distortions within the fluid are believed to cause degradation of the piping material. This project aimed to look at how the change in the disc angle of the butterfly valve caused disruptions in the fluid and thereby changes in how nickel aluminum bronze degrades over time. It was found that as the disc angle inside of the butterfly valve decreased towards being completely closed, the greater the amount of degradation was produced upon the alloys surface. Micrographs within this paper aimed to characterize the amount of degradation upon the alloy surface and also report the overall thickness of oxide deposited onto the metal surface during testing.

Catalytic valorization of natural gas and biomass-derived feedstocks by metal oxides

Delgado Muñoz, Daniel 11 June 2019 (has links)
[EN] The present doctoral thesis is set within the scope of the current energy transition, which considers the progressive substitution of non-renewable fossil sources by renewable feedstocks for the production of chemicals and fuels. In this context of gradual transition, and according to recent energy outlooks, fossil sources (especially natural gas) and biomass feedstocks will play a key role during the shift. A study on the use of metal oxides (based on tungsten bronzes or nickel oxides) as catalysts for different reactions has been conducted. Particularly, they have been studied as catalytic materials for: i) the transformation of biomass-derived feedstocks: glycerol transformation into acrolein/acrylic acid, and the transformation of short-chain oxygenates present in aqueous effluents (derived from extraction processes of pyrolysis bio-oils) into fuels; and ii) the valorization of natural gas components, i.e. the transformation of ethane into ethylene by oxidative dehydrogenation. The work is presented from a materials chemistry perspective, emphasizing the physicochemical characteristics of the different catalytic systems by using conventional and in situ characterization techniques and model reactions (gas phase methanol and ethanol transformation); with the aim of understanding the specific catalytic functionalities present in each case. For both gas phase glycerol transformation and the valorization of short-chain oxygenates aqueous mixtures, catalyst based on tungsten oxide bronzes have been used. The compositional and structural versatility of this structural types (with the subsequent control of their functional properties) will be highlighted. In this sense, the acid-redox properties of W-V-O catalysts can be modulated by controlling the crystalline phase composition in the materials (i.e. hexagonal and monoclinic polymorphs of tungsten oxide) at a fixed V concentration. This effect has been studied by using the gas-phase aerobic transformation of methanol as a surface test reaction. The concentration of the hexagonal and monoclinic polymorphs in the catalysts has also an important influence in the gas-phase transformation of glycerol into acrylic acid. Also, it is possible to control the Brönsted/Lewis acid nature of the surface by the isomorphic substitution of Nb for W in WO3-Nb2O5 system. On the one hand, catalysts showing a higher proportion of Brönsted acid sites are more effective in the glycerol dehydration to acrolein. On the other hand, materials with a higher concentration of Lewis acid sites display high yields to condensation products in the aqueous phase valorization of short chain oxygenates. Additionally, the differences between W-V-O and W-Nb-O catalysts prepared by both reflux and hydrothermal methods have been studied. Also the effect of adding a mesoporous KIT-6 silica as support on the catalytic performance in the gas phase transformation of ethanol and glycerol will be underlined. Considering the transformation of natural gas components, nickel oxide-based materials were chosen (either supported on different oxides and/or promoted with different metals) to perform the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethane. In this case the study has been focused on elucidating the effects of both promoters and supports on the nature and physicochemical features of nickel oxide, which lead to a drastic change in the catalytic behavior of these materials. This way, it has been observed that by the modification of the reducibility and the chemical nature of nickel oxide, it is possible to transform an apparently non-selective catalyst in the ODH of ethane (like NiO, showing a selectivity to ethylene of ca. 30 %) into one of the most selective catalysts reported in the literature (presenting a selectivity to ethylene of ca. 90 %). / Delgado Muñoz, D. Novel polar dielectrics with the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure

Rotaru, Andrei January 2013 (has links)
There is great interest in the development of new polar dielectric ceramics and multiferroic materials with new and improved properties. A family of tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) relaxors of composition Ba₆M³⁺Nb₉O₃₀ (M³⁺ = Ga³⁺, Sc³⁺ and In³⁺, and also their solid solutions) were studied in an attempt to understand their dielectric properties to enable design of novel polar TTB materials. A combination of electrical measurements (dielectric and impedance spectroscopy) and powder diffraction (X-ray and neutron) studies as a function of temperature was employed for characterising the dynamic dipole response in these materials. The effect of B-site doping on fundamental dipolar relaxation parameters were investigated by independently fitting the dielectric permittivity to the Vogel-Fulcher (VF) model, and the dielectric loss to Universal Dielectric Response (UDR) and Arrhenius models. These studies showed an increase in the characteristic dipole freezing temperature (T[subscript(f)]) with increase B-cation radius. Crystallographic data indicated a corresponding maximum in tetragonal strain at T[subscript(f)], consistent with the slowing and eventual freezing of dipoles. In addition, the B1 crystallographic site was shown to be most active in terms of the dipolar response. A more in-depth analysis of the relaxor behaviour of these materials revealed that, with the stepwise increase in the ionic radius of the M³⁺ cation on the B-site within the Sc-In solid solution series, the Vogel-Fulcher curves (lnf vs. T[subscript(m)]) are displaced to higher temperatures, while the degree of relaxor behaviour (frequency dependence) increases. Unfortunately, additional features appear in the dielectric spectroscopy data, dramatically affecting the Vogel-Fulcher fitting parameters. A parametric study of the reproducibility of acquisition and analysis of dielectric data was therefore carried out. The applicability of the Vogel-Fulcher expression to fit dielectric permittivity data was investigated, from the simple unrestricted (“free”) fit to a wider range of imposed values for the VF relaxation parameters that fit with high accuracy the experimental data. The reproducibility of the dielectric data and the relaxation parameters obtained by VF fitting were shown to be highly sensitive to the thermal history of samples and also the conditions during dielectric data acquisition (i.e., heating/cooling rate). In contrast, UDR analysis of the dielectric loss data provided far more reproducible results, and to an extent was able to partially deconvolute the additional relaxation processes present in these materials. The exact nature of these additional relaxations is not yet fully understood. It was concluded application of the Vogel-Fulcher model should be undertaken with great care. The UDR model may represent a feasible alternative to the evaluation of fundamental relaxation parameters, and a step forward towards the understanding of the dielectric processes in tetragonal tungsten bronzes.

Pêche-Quilichini, Kewin 19 December 2011 (has links)
The amount of information available on ceramic ware from the different phases of Corsican protohistory is as quantitatively important as little studied. An analysis of these sources (43 collections from 35 sites) using a methodology based on ratios of proportion, as well as a critical re-examination of publications and radiocarbon dates, brings about a new understanding of the chrono-cultural structure of island groups between the Late Bronze and the Early Iron Ages. After resolving a few of the issues which led to previous arbitrary and incomplete analyses, it has been possible to generate a schema based on clearly defined material elements using seriation and periodisation. The main results show a complex polygenic structure in the ceramic assemblages, a subtle game of balance between tradition, borrowing and innovation in relationship to periods and contexts that plainly integrates Corsica in Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean dynamics at the dawn of the first historic societies.

From Ugarit to Uppland : A study about contacts between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean world during the Scandinavian Bronze Age

Mehdi, Ibrahim January 2019 (has links)
This thesis studies the contacts between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean area during the Scandinavian Bronze Age. These contacts have been the topic of controversy for a long time as one side of the debate believes in direct contacts between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean area, and the other side believes that contacts between the two areas could only have been by down the line trading contacts. This thesis then aims to see what evidence there is that the contacts would have been direct or otherwise. This is done by studying the archaeological evidence as well as the pictographic depictions on rock art in Scandinavia and painted pottery from the Mediterranean area, as well as ships and ship technology to understand if Scandinavian ships would have been able to travel to the Mediterranean in the first place. Further, this thesis also studies the urn burials introduced to Scandinavia during the Bronze Age from northern Italy to see the spreading of ideas, as well as isotope analysis of bronze from Sweden and Denmark together with strontium analysis of Bronze Age individuals to form a complete picture about these contacts and how they took place.

J.-C.) / The footprints of Greek sculptures : an archaeological study of techniques used to fasten statues on their bases Aegean Greece from the Archaic period to the end of the Hellenistic period (7th-1st century BC)

Nouet, Rachel 02 December 2017 (has links)
The study examines the techniques used to attach statues to their bases in the Greek world from the end of the 7th c. BC to the end of the Hellenistic period. Starting from bases bearing inscriptions, it builds on a corpus of 387 monuments from Delphi, Delos and Athens, showing traces of attachment. Their description and analysis can be found in a separated catalogue. In the first part of the study, a chrono‐typology was elaborated, identifying and dating each technique according to the material, the size and the type of the figures. In the second part, the traces of attachment were interpreted as signs of the missing statue. First, we showed that these traces brought information on its material and its size but also its type and its position. Then we focused on signed bases and proceeded to a cross‐examination of the kind of technique used and the position revealed by the traces in order to identify artisanal traditions specific to regions or workshops. Finally, we considered the reasons for using marble or bronze for statues; we thus showed the importance of the setting context from the classical period onward, as exemplified by the come-back of marble sculpture in the 2nd c. BC. The study is thus intended as a contribution to research both on attachment techniques and sculpture in its context.

De la conception à l'utilisation des pierres à aiguiser, polissoirs et autres outils de l'abrasion dans le monde égéen à l'âge du Bronze / From design to use of sharpening, polishing stone implements and other abrasion stone tools in the Aegean Bronze Age

Thomas, Nathalie 14 December 2017 (has links)
This research aims at investigating the supplying strategies of raw materials selected for the implementation of lithic tools in the Aegean sea during the Bronze Age. Furthermore, it addresses the possible exchange networks responsible for the wider distribution of abrasive rocks. Particularly, all steps of the operational process (chaîne opératoire) were investigated from the extraction of raw materials to the use of the stone tools. These research objectives were addressed through an interdiscipinary approach, which combines the petrographic, morphological, and use-wear analysis of lithic tool implements based on both macroscopic and microscopic observations. The purpose of the use wear analysis was the identification of the different functions among these tools within their historical and archaeological context. Additionally, this study developed a precise terminology of manual movements and gestures associated with the use of these tools by combining ethnographical and experimental data with archaeological evidence.

However, the Temple as presented in the Hebrew Bible never existed, because no more than an annex king s palace; it s also not factual the myths circulating the kings David and Solomon, which were not as grand as the Hebrew Bible points. Nevertheless, on two occasions in the history of Judah, the Deuteronomist Revolution and the Return of the Captivity, the Temple had a centralizating function and required many founding myths to legitimize it. With such myths, the people who were near the Temple felt more part of the House of Yahweh for believing participate of a plan established by the Creator of the Universe and all the stories invented and developed by the Deuteronomist and the Priestly gave them greatest joy and hope. What happened in fact was the king s power legitimacy in the context of Deuteronomist Reform and the priest s power in the return of the Captivity in the early Persian period. As for the post-exile, for being a more recent period, is greater amount of elements that characterize the stimulation of popular imaginary regarding the First Temple than in the period of the Deuteronomist Reform, despite the latter being period of prosperity for the Kingdom of Judah / A presente tese de doutorado visa apresentar o que veio a ser construído através do imaginário sobre o Primeiro Templo de Salomão, o qual muitas pessoas ainda acreditam nos dias de hoje que seja factual.
