Automated climate calculations and 3D value-based visualizations : An Integration of BIM and LCALeon Perlasca, José Arturo January 2019 (has links)
The Swedish Government has set a goal to reach net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2045, which together with the commissioning to the Swedish Housing Agency to prepare requirements for a climate declaration that shall reduce the climate impact from buildings, has enforce the AEC industry to provide solutions that help reach these targets. The introduction of the integration of BIM technologies, together with the LCA methodology has been suggested as a key solution to solve this problem. To achieve the results for this study, two main objectives were stablished. The first objective was to develop a BIM model in SMC able to produce automated climate calculations. The second objective was to perform interviews with relevant actors about this tool. The integration of those objectives helped to answer the research questions of this study. This study provides a way of performing automated climate calculations for construction projects using classification of materials in SMC and calculations in Excel. It also has the ability to perform data visualization of the carbon footprints of the complements in the 3D models of the project using the GWP of the chosen materials. It can be said that it is a great tool to introduce to decision-makers an easy way to identify the hotspots of carbon emissions and choose more sustainable alternatives.

Buildings in the Digital Era : An Explorative Study of Digital Twins in the Built EnvironmentKästel, Siw Kristine, Wallén, Joanna January 2024 (has links)
In recent years, digital twins (DT) have gained traction in enhancing operation and maintenance procedures across various industrial sectors, such as manufacturing, energy, and aerospace. Yet their utilization remains more limited in the built environment. The aim of this paper is to investigate the current conceptualizations of DTs within the context of the Swedish built environment, shedding light on the maturity of DTs for built assets and the key value drivers influencing their adoption. The study reveals that DTs for built assets are in early developmental stages, lacking the maturity required to encompass the full spectrum of attributes inherent in a conventional DT. Despite stakeholders labeling these initiatives as DTs, our findings indicate a closer alignment with the concept of BIM-based digital models. This observation resonates with existing literature, highlighting the absence of a universally accepted definition for DTs. Within the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) phase, we have identified the following four primary value drivers shaping the adoption of BIM-based DTs: 1) commercial transparency and trusted transactions, 2) efficiency and cost reduction in routine operations, 3) operational continuity, and 4) added services. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the convergence of BIM and DTs, offering insights into the practical implications and value propositions that drive the integration of these technologies within the built environment.

The Impact of Implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) During Construction / Påverkan av BIM på arbetsmiljö och säkerhet i byggproduktionenMatthei, Jonathan January 2021 (has links)
Health and safety during construction remains a worldwide challenge that the construction industry is facing. The German construction industry recorded an average of 110,000 accidents per year in the period of 2010 to 2019. A discernible trend toward a decrease in occupational accidents is not visible. In this context, traditional safety planning does not seem to be able to guarantee sufficient health and safety during construction. In line with the BIM Roadmap published by the German Ministry of Transport in 2015, it can be recognized that Building Information Modeling (BIM) is supposed to be increasingly used in upcoming years. This paper aims to identify how BIM could positively impact Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) during construction. Therefore, a thesis procedure, combining quantitative and qualitative research with an in depth literature review is introduced. This study reveals a high added value of using BIM for (1) safety rule checking and design validation and (2) safety education, training and communication. BIM as a decision supporting tool has the potential to reduce the underestimation of safety hazards and improve safety reporting, which have been identified as current vulnerabilities in the construction industry. Furthermore, an added benefit to sustainability following the concept of Construction Hazard Prevention through Design (CHPtD) is illustrated. In practice, however, BIM for OSH remains unused, while those working with BIM are not familiar with safety planning. This study indicates that in order to fully utilize the potential of BIM, intuitiveness and standardization is required, while those implementing BIM and those using BIM need to be aware of and willing to exploit the potential of new technologies. The challenge now is to recognize the potential of BIM in relation to OHS and to actively use BIM for health and safety purposes.

BIM for Steel Buillding Projects BIM-DFEAvendaño Bernal, Jose Ignacio 15 January 2024 (has links)
Aquests beneficis operatius poden donar lloc a
[EN] Steel is an essential material for the construction industry; as a result, its consumption and
production per capita have grown considerably, owing to population growth and increasing
demands for industrialization in developing countries, among other factors. Steel offers
certain advantages over other construction materials, such as low weight, adequate structural
behaviors, a high degree of prefabrication, and increased construction speed. However, the
use of steel as a construction material has increased the complexity of projects, particularly
in terms of information management, because it is imperative to ensure quality and timely
information for the different actors involved in the workflow. The inefficient use of
information results in fragmentation during construction, to cope with such fragmentation,
it is necessary to include building information modeling (BIM) that facilitate collaboration
between the different actors involved in the building life cycle. BIM has been associated
with improved productivity and cooperation among teams. However, the benefits of using
BIM in the steel building process have not been explored comprehensively, even more when
BIM does not exhibit continuity throughout the phases of a steel construction project; as a
result, its benefits are curtailed. Therefore, there is a need to investigate, develop, and
propose BIM integration that generate continuous communication, coordination and
management between steel building phases, in order to ensure deliverables that conclude
with a building that meets the initially established project requirements.
The present PhD thesis proposes a BIM integration model called BIM for design, fabrication
and erection in steel buildings (BIM-DFE) to improve communication, integration,
comprehensible procurement processes, and production processes defined by critical
stakeholders in the steel industry. These operating benefits can result in benefits for steelbuilding projects. Although this research is oriented to steel-building projects, the proposed
BIM-DFE model can be extrapolated to different materials with similar processes such as
concrete, wood or any prefabricated material for the construction industry / Avendaño Bernal, JI. (2023). BIM for Steel Buillding Projects BIM-DFE [Tesis doctoral]. Universitat Politècnica de València. https://doi.org/10.4995/Thesis/10251/202062 / Compendio

Funkční díly v ocenění stavebního objektu / Functional parts valuation of the buildingŠevčík, Jaroslav January 2016 (has links)
Diploma thesis deals with comparing of current awards by Classification of building structures and works and awards by Functional parts. It is possible to calculate Building life cycle costs by Functional parts. This is definately the advantage of the system because the calculation cannot be done by Classification of building structures and works. A new law on public procurement deals with Building life cycle costs as an evaluation criterion. So it is recommended to use Functional parts awards. The other goal of the thesis is to find bridges between Functional parts and the issue of BIM. BIM is a trend of global construction industry.
