A New Paradigm Integrating Business Process Modeling and Use Case Modeling

The goal of this research is to develop a new paradigm integrating the practices of business process modeling and use case modeling. These two modeling approaches describe the behavior of organizations and systems, and their interactions, but rest on different paradigms and serve different needs. The base of knowledge and information required for each approach is largely common, however, so an integrated approach has advantages in efficiency, consistency and completeness of the overall behavioral model. Both modeling methods are familiar and widely used. Business process modeling is often employed as a precursor to the development of a system to be used in a business organization. Business process modeling teams and stakeholders may spend months or years developing detailed business process models, expecting that these models will provide a useful base of information for system designers. Unfortunately, as the business process model is analyzed by the system designers, it is found that information needed to specify the functionality of the system does not exist in the business process model. System designers may then employ use case modeling to specify the needed system functionality, again spending significant time with stakeholders to gather the needed input. Stakeholders find this two-pass process redundant and wasteful of time and money since the input they provide to both modeling teams is largely identical, with each team capturing only the aspects relevant to their form of modeling. Developing a new paradigm and modeling approach that achieves the objectives of both business process modeling and use case modeling in an integrated form, in one analysis pass, results in time savings, increased accuracy and improved communication among all participants in the systems development process. Analysis of several case studies will show that inefficiency, wasted time and overuse of stakeholder resource time results from the separate application of business process modeling and use case modeling. A review of existing literature on the subject shows that while the problem of modeling both business process and use case information in a coordinated fashion has been recognized before, there are few if any approaches that have been proposed to reconcile and integrate the two methods. Based on both literature review and good modeling practices, a list of goals for the new paradigm and modeling approach forms the basis for the paradigm to be created. A grounded theory study is then conducted to analyze existing modeling approaches for both business processes and use cases and to provide an underlying theory on which to base the new paradigm. The two main innovations developed for the new paradigm are the usage process and the timebox. Usage processes allow system usages (use cases) to be identified as the business process model is developed, and the two to be shown in a combined process flow. Timeboxes allow processes to be positioned in time-relation to each other without the need to combine processes into higher level processes using causal relations that may not exist. The combination of usage processes and timeboxes allows any level of complex behavior to be modeled in one pass, without the redundancy and waste of separate business process and use case modeling work. Several pilot projects are conducted to test the new modeling paradigm in differing modeling situations with participants and subject matter experts asked to compare the traditional models with the new paradigm formulations.

Цель работы – разработка программного модуля «Онлайн-запись» по методологии «Scrum» как инструмента повышения уровня лояльности клиентской базы студии AlisaMakeUp. Для достижения поставленной цели необходимо решить следующие задачи: - анализ существующих решений повышения лояльности и обоснование необходимости разработки и внедрения модуля; - обзор методологии, выявление преимуществ; - формирование требования к модулю; - разработка технического задания; - разработка рабочей документации на модуль и ее части; - описание проекта; - подготовка модуля к вводу в действие; - описание процесса разработки; - верификация гипотезы о влиянии программного модуля на лояльность. Для решения поставленных задач были проанализированы различные источники литературы, построены модели бизнес-процессов в приложении BPwin, произведены временные и ресурсные расчеты с использованием Microsoft Office Project 2010. Получены следующие результаты – выполнен обзор существующих решений, сформулирована и верифицирована гипотеза о влиянии программного модуля на лояльность клиентской базы, описана методология и проект разработки, рассмотрена деятельность студии AlisaMakeUp, разработан и внедрен программный модуль «Онлайн-запись» и модель лояльности. / Work purpose – development of software module "Online record" on "Scrum" methodology as instrument of increase in level of loyalty of a client basis of "AlisaMakeUp" studio. For achievement of a goal it is necessary to solve the following problems: - analysis of the existing solutions of increase in loyalty and reasons for need of development and deployment of module; - review of methodology, detection of advantages; - formation of requirement to the module; - development of the specification; - development of working documentation on the module and its parts; - project description; - preparation of the module for commissioning; - development process description; - verification of a hypothesis of influence of software module on loyalty. For solution of objectives different sources of literature were analyzed, business process models in "BPwin" application are constructed, temporal and resource calculations with use of "Microsoft Office Project 2010" are made. Following results are received – review of the existing decisions is executed, the hypothesis of influence of software module on loyalty of a client basis is formulated and verified, methodology and project of development are described, activities of "AlisaMakeUp" studio are considered, software module "Online record" and model of loyalty is developed and implemented.

The Effects of Business Process Management Cognitive Resources and User Cognitive Differences on Outcomes of User Comprehension

There is a growing need to study factors that affect user comprehension of Business Process Management (BPM) information portrayed by graphical process models (GPMs). For example, deployment of BPM Systems, unique types of enterprise-level information systems, has dramatically increased in recent years. This increase is primarily because BPM Systems give a variety of managers across an enterprise the ability to directly design, configure, enact, monitor, diagnose, and control business processes that other types of enterprise systems do not. This is possible because BPM Systems uniquely rely on GPMs derived from formal graph theory. Besides controlling the business processes, these GPMs, such as metagraphs and Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, portray business process information (BPI) and prompt BPM managers to apply their training and expertise to deal with BPM situations. As a result, GPMs are the primary information artifacts for decision-making and communication among different, often geographically dispersed stakeholders. Therefore, user comprehension of these unique GPMs is critical to the efficient and effective development, deployment, and utilization of BPM Systems. User comprehension outcomes are jointly affected by the (1) BPM cognitive resources available to each manager (including the type of GPM, BPI, and user educational training and experience), and (2) cognitive differences between individual BPM managers (such as their mental workload, cognitive styles and cognitive abilities). Although research has studied GPMs in various contexts, there is apparently no empirical research investigating GPM user comprehension in the context of BPM Systems. This research makes an important contribution by addressing this gap in the literature. Statement of the Objective: The purpose of this research is to empirically study how BPM cognitive resources and cognitive differences between individuals affect outcomes of GPM user comprehension. This research centered on the following objectives: A. Investigate whether more positive user comprehension outcomes are produced by novice users if a single GPM technique is used to portray different types of BPI (e.g., as with metagraphs) or if different GPM techniques are used to portray different types of BPI (e.g., as with UML diagrams). B. Investigate whether one type of BPI is more easily comprehended and interpreted by novice users irrespective of the type of GPM or the type of educational training of the user. C. Investigate whether users with a specific type of user educational training can more easily comprehend and interpret BPM information irrespective of the type of GPM or the type of BPI. D. Evaluate influences of individual cognitive differences (i.e., mental workload, cognitive styles, and cognitive abilities) on outcomes of user comprehension. In order to accomplish these objectives, this study: (a) defined a theoretical framework conceptualizing user comprehension outcomes in terms of the interaction between cognitive resources external to the user and individual differences affecting how users cognitively process BPI, (b) empirically tested an operational research model of GPM user comprehension that is based on the theoretical framework, and (c) interpreted the experimental results in the context of related literatures. Description of Research Methods: This study empirically tested relationships between several variables representing BPM cognitive resources and individual cognitive differences hypothesized as influencing the outcomes of user comprehension. A laboratory experiment, involving 87 upper-level undergraduate students from two universities, analyzed relationships between participant comprehension of two types of GPMs (i.e., metagraphs and UML diagrams) used to portray three types of BPI (i.e., task-centric, resource-centric, and information-centric BPI) by novice GPM users possessing different educational training (i.e., industrial engineering, business management, and computer science training). Dependent variables included assessments of task accuracy, task timeliness, subjective mental workload, and self-efficacy. Covariate effects were also analyzed for two types of participant cognitive abilities (i.e., general cognitive ability (GCA) and attentional abilities) and two types of participant cognitive styles (extroversion-introversion and sensing-intuitive). Multivariate analysis techniques were used to analyze and interpret the data. Discussion of Results: The type of GPM and participants' GCA produced significant effects on the dependent variables in this study. For example, metagraph users produced significantly more desirable results than UML users across all dependent variables, contrary to what was hypothesized. However, if only the BPM cognitive resources (i.e., GPM Type, BPM Type, and the Type of Participant Education) were studied in relation to user comprehension outcomes, spurious conclusions would have been reached. When individual cognitive differences were included in the research model and analyses, results showed participants with higher GCA produced significantly more positive user comprehension outcomes compared to participants with lower GCAs. Also, many of the impacts of differences in the types of BPI and the types of UET were moderated by the differences in participants' GCA and attentional abilities. In addition, the relationship between subjective mental workload and task performance (i.e., accuracy and timeliness) suggest a possible GPM cognitive "profile" for user comprehension tasks in a BPM Systems context. These results have important implications for future research and practice in several bodies of knowledge, including GPM user comprehension in management systems engineering, BPM modeling, BPM Systems, HCI, and cognitive ergonomics literature. / Ph. Standardy modelování a řízení podnikových procesů / Business Process Modeling Standards

Business process modeling plays an important role for the documentation and analysis of organizational processes and for the specification of requirements for information systems. Currently, there are many standards for process modeling, and each represents a different approach to modeling and provides different opportunities for creating models. Thus, same models created in different modeling languages differ in terms of their expressiveness, according to each standard. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of selected business process modeling standards. The effectiveness of standards will be evaluated on two levels. First, in terms of their semantics and second, in terms of their syntax. Evaluation of standards in terms of their semantics will be based on the comparison of standards with a business process metamodel created within the project Opensoul. This model defines a set of basic elements and their associations at a basic level of process modeling. Evaluation of standards in terms of their syntax will be based on the comparison of standards with a framework proposed by Moody and Hillegersberg. The results of this comparison should show which standard best supports defined criteria. The evaluation framework will be applied on the following process modeling standards: BPMN, EPC and IDEF3. Based on the results obtained their strength and weaknesses will be discussed. The main contribution of this thesis can be seen both in the analysis of the element set of selected process modeling standards and further in the comparison of standards according to the evaluation framework.

A method for measuring Internal Fraud Risk (IFR) of business organisations with ERP systems

ERP system has shaped the way modern organisations design, control, and execute business processes. It has not only paved the way for efficient use of organisational resources but also offered the opportunity to utilise data logged in the system for ensuring internal control. The key contribution of this research is that it has resulted in a method which can practically be employed by internal auditors for measuring internal fraud risk of business organisations with ERP systems, by utilising process mining technique and evidential reasoning in the form of Bayesian theorem, in a much more effective way compared to conventional frequentist method. The other significant contribution is that it has paved the way for combining process mining technique and evidential reasoning in addressing problems prevalent within organisational contexts. This research has contributed in developing IS theories for design and action especially in the area of soft systems methodology as it has relied on business process modelling in addressing the issue of internal fraud risk. The chosen method has contributed in facilitating incorporation of design science method in problem solving. Researchers have focused on applying data mining techniques within organisational contexts for extracting valuable information. Process mining is a comparatively new technique which allows business processes to be analysed based on event logs. Analysis of business processes can be useful for organisations not only for attaining greater efficiency but also for ensuring internal control inside the organisation. Large organisations have various measures in place for ensuring internal control. Measuring the risk of fraud within a business process is an important practice for preventing fraud as accurate measurement of fraud risk provides business experts with the opportunity to comprehend the extent of the problem. Business experts, such as internal auditors, still heavily rely upon conventional methods for measuring internal fraud risk way by of random check of process compliance. Organisations with ERP systems in place can avail themselves of the opportunity to use event logs for extending the scope of assessing process conformance. This has not been put into practice as there is a lack of well researched methods which can allow event logs to be utilised for enhancing internal control. This research can be proved to be useful for practitioners as it has developed a method for measuring internal fraud risk within organisations. This research aimed to utilise process mining technique that allows business experts to exert greater control over business process execution by allowing the internal fraud risk to be measured effectively. A method has been developed for measuring internal fraud risk of business originations with ERP systems by using process mining and Bayesian theorem. In this method, rate of process deviation is calculated by conducting process mining on relevant logs of events and then that process deviation rate is applied in Bayesian theorem along with historic internal fraud risk rate and process deviation rate calculated manually for arriving at a revised internal fraud risk rate. Bayesian theorem has been relied upon for the purpose of developing this new method as it allows evidential reasoning to be incorporated. The method has been developed as a Design Science Research Method (DSRM) artefact by conducting three case-studies. Data has been collected from three case companies, operating in readymade garments manufacturing industry, pharmaceuticals industry, and aviation industry, regarding their procurement process for conducting process mining. The revised internal fraud risk rates were then evaluated by considering the feedback received from respective business experts of each of the case company. The proposed method is beneficial as it has paved the way for practitioners to utilise process mining using a soft system methodology. The developed method is of immense significance as it has contributed in the field of business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) and the big data analytics which have become significantly important to both academics and practitioners over the past couple of decades.

Analizuojamos modeliavimo notacijų galimybės ir pajėgumas, pritaikomumas bei efektyvumas projektuojant veiklos procesus. Apžvelgiami veiklos žodyno reikalingumo ir naudingumo aspektai. Analizuojami esami veiklos procesų ir veiklos žodynų sinchronizacijos sprendimai. Atlikus išsamią standartų bei esamų spendimų analize buvo nustatyta jog nėra daugiafunkcinio algoritmo kuris vykdytų šiuos veiksmus: veiklos procesų diagramos formavimas remiantis turimu veiklos žodynu, veiklos žodyno sudarymas remiantis veiklos procesų diagrama bei veiklos procesų diagramos ir veiklos žodyno sinchronizacija tarpusavyje remiantis veiklos žodynu. A construção de um produto de software envolve algumas etapas, e a mais complexa saber precisamente o que construir. A precisão nesta etapa do projeto é essencial, pois se houver falha na especificação, haverá maior prejuíz ao final doprojeto do sistema de software. A principal razão para as falhas de projeto de software é o gerenciamento inadequado dos requisitos do sistema, gerando custos elevados para serem corrigidos nas fases seguintes ao levantamento de requisitos e insatisfac~ao para todos os envolvidos. Deste modo, produzir software com qualidade é uma tarefa complexa, que demanda entender, planejar e atender, provendo soluc~oes necessárias. Este trabalho tem como objetivo, apresentar uma metodologia para o desenvolvimento de especifícação de requisitos, com uma abordagem orientada ao alinhamento entre TI e Negócio, por meio de um processo de engenharia de requisitos, [integrando diagramas de Caso de Uso como Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). Alem disso, este trabalho de pesquisa encontra-se em funcionamento na empresa citada,otimizando recursos e atingindo melhores resultados para a organização. / Requirement Engineering Methods and Processes have become a focus point for scientic research, in which quality, cost estimates and time frames are elaborated as good practices in development. Building a software product includes several phases, and the most complex is to know exactly what to build. Precision is essential during this phase of the project, because if the specication fails, there will be greater loss at the end of the software system project. The main reason for software project failures is inept management of system requirements, generating high costs that have to be corrected in the phases following requirement survey, and creating dissatisfaction for all those involved. Thus, producing quality software is a complex task, which demands understanding, planning, and compliance to provide the necessary solutions. This paper presents a methodology for developing requirement specifications, with an approach directed towards aligning IT and Business through a requirement engineering process integrating Use Case with Business Process Modeling Notation. Through case studies presented and applied at a private health care insurance company, the methodology proved to be eective, by reducing exceeding the agreed-upon budget by 69.68%. Additionally, this study is still on-going at the abovementioned company, optimizing resources and reaching better results for the organization.

Business process configuration with NFRs and contextavareness

Business process models are an important source of information for the development of information systems. However, changes in the environment can a ect the way business processes are performed. In order to obtain models that re ect the changes it is necessary to continuously check between model and reality. Good business processes need to be up-to-date and automated to represent the organizational environment. Thus, it is of paramount importance to represent adequately variability in Business Process Models. Representing and con guring business processes variability for a speci c organization allows the proper execution of processes. In addition, dynamic environment calls for exible con guration processes that can meet stakeholders' goals. However, selecting a con guration for business process is a challenging activity. Even though current approaches allow the representation of variability of business process models, the selection of business variants in a given context remains a challenging issue. In this proposal, we advocate the use of Non-Functional Requirements (NFR) and context-awareness information to drive the con guration of process models at run-time. We propose a model-driven business process con- guration approach called Business process Variability Con guration with Contexts and NFRs (BVCCoN), approach that keeps the variability representation, con guration knowledge and contextual information separated from the business process models. Design and Evaluation of a Wiki-based Collaborative Process Modeling Environment

The area of business process management in general and and especially business process design has only recently discovered potential applications of social software to facilitate and support collaboration [Scheer and Klueckmann, 2009]. This development is also fueled by the practical insight that organizations have experienced top-down approaches in the design and implementation of business processes to be not effective. In fact, many process management initiatives failed due to a lack of acceptance of chosen methods and tools. As a consequence in many organizations so called [Klückmann and Scheer, 2009] "Guerilla approaches" have been followed where individual organizational units introduced their own business process management philosophy and as well techniques and tools that fit their specific needs. However, Klückmann and Scheer [2009] stress the fact that although distributed business process management initiatives should generally not be hindered, it is important to channel and integrate these initiatives towards a more consistent and efficient process management in the large. Business process modeling in this context serves several purposes in the process management cycle. One purpose is the analysis of business processes to uncover potential performance weaknesses and provide a basis for improvements. Another purpose is the unambiguous documentation of business processes as a resource for knowledge transfer, organizational learning and governance. An increasingly important purpose is the use of process models to support the design and engineering of respective enterprise information systems [Davies et al., 2006]. Hence, the complex and abstract nature of process models and the closedness of process modeling environments has prevented them to be broadly accepted and used by non-experts [Nolte et al., 2011] viz the process community in a wider sense. Consequently, process documentation and models in organizations frequently is outdated, incomplete and inconsistent. This model-reality divide in turn leads to even more reluctance towards the adoption of process modeling environments and use of process models. Bridging this model-reality divide by fostering open and fluent col- laboration through adequate features inspired by social software has gained growing attention by academia and industry [Mathiesen et al., 2012]. Although both industry and academia have addressed the need for collaboration support in process modeling only limited insight exists regarding the specific requirements for software-support in collaborative process modeling. This work refers to existing research (e.g. [Mendling et al., 2012; Riemer et al., 2011]) on requirements for software-support in collaborative process modeling and wiki-based process modeling (e.g. [Ghidini et al., 2010; Dengler and Vrandecic, 2011]). and pursues the following goals: (1) gain an understanding of the nature and requirements of collaborative process modeling in practice, (2) investigate how these requirements can be addressed through the design of a wiki-based collaborative process modeling environment, and (3) gain insight how a wiki-based collaborative process modeling environment supports process design activities in practice. To address these goals a design science approach has been followed. Through a systematic literature review and qualitative expert interviews a preliminary understanding of the problem domain and specification of requirements has been achieved. Through the extension and adaption of a well-proven collaboration platform (a wiki engine) for process modeling support several of the previously identified design issues have been addressed. In particular, issues regarding the flexible integration of a visual process modeling interface component into a collaboration environment and issues regarding concurrent scenarios in process modeling have been discussed in detail and realized partly on a technical level. Two major software components have been developed for the support of collaborative process modeling. First, a light-weight and easily integratable user-interface component for process model creation has been developed and integrated into the collaboration environment (a wiki engine). Second, the identification and handling of concurrent situations when multiple modelers access and modify a process model page has been implemented on an element level which allows for the interactive resolution and semi-automatic merging of conflicting revisions of a process model. Case-studies in an industrial and an academic setting provided valuable insights in the practice of collaborative process modeling and gave feedback on the applicability of a wiki-based approach. The first case-study of a process re-design in the recruiting department of an office supply manufacturing company in Hungary describes the insights gained during a long-term collaboration within a small group. Findings were especially valuable for further enhancements of the software and an understanding of practical requirements in iterative model creation and validation. The second case-study in the context of two bachelor and master courses in information system design has lead to insights regarding the requirements in highly dynamic collaboration scenarios in small groups and large groups but as well regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of wiki-based process modeling in collaborative learning processes. This diploma thesis deals with the modeling and evaluation tools that are used for process modeling. The aim is to provide a method of selecting the most appropriate tool for selected requirements. This goal is achieved by using several subgoals, which include tools analysis for process modeling, design criteria for the selection of tools, their weights calculation, design and construction method for selecting tools in Excel and create case studies that will demonstrate the principles of selection tools. At the beginning of the thesis is characterized by the area of process management, its history, actual trends and definitions related thereto. Another chapter is a description of notations that are used for modeling processes. The largest part of the chapter is devoted to the characteristics Notation Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), which together with their graphic design described all the elements of notation. The remaining part of the chapter describes the notation event-driven process chain (EPC) and the Unified Modeling Language (UML). A description of tools for process modeling is dedicated to the fifth chapter includes a detailed characterization of each instrument. Based on the individual tools and literary sources, the next chapter in the proposed criteria by which the tools will be evaluated. For calculating the weights of the proposed criteria is used Fuller method. The chapter concludes with evaluation tools previously described and a description of how to select the creation tools in Excel. The work ends with case studies which serve to illustrate the procedure for selecting tools.
