Re-visioning Ireland: A Gothic Reading of Patrick McCabe¡¦s The Butcher Boy

Wu, Yen-chi 14 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis, drawing from the Gothic paradigm, attempts to complicate and supplement the revisionist reading of Patrick McCabe¡¦s The Butcher Boy (1992). The novel tells the murder story of Francie Brady, a troubled Irish boy who slaughters his Anglicized neighbor like a pig. Critics have aligned the novel with the revisionist attempt to debunk nationalist meta-narrative. They have also associated the sensational plotline and grotesque imageries in the novel with the Gothic tradition. Revisionism and Gothicism, therefore, are two established reading strategies to The Butcher Boy. Both ideas, however, are used by critics with certain unease, for both terms are under much critical debate. Moreover, in the end of the novel, McCabe astutely eschews moral judgment on Francie¡¦s horrific deed. Francie¡¦s first-person narrative also allows the reader to sympathize with the young murderer. In this regard, McCabe keeps a sympathetic undertone in the murder story, which a simplistic revisionist reading cannot fully account for. This thesis, bringing the two critical paradigms together, argues that McCabe¡¦s use of Gothicism is crucial to understanding his complicated re-visioning of Ireland in the 1960s. Through historicizing the Gothic fiction, the thesis underlines the idea of ¡§antiquarianism¡¨ to explicate the historical background of the novel¡XIreland at the turn of the 1960s when the Republic underwent a transformation of national ethos, from conservative nationalism to modernization. I contend that while the novel is critical of the waning nationalism, it is also suspicious of Ireland¡¦s relentless modernizing project. From a cultural dimension of the Gothic, the thesis foregrounds the relation between Gothic imagination and racial discourse. In this light, I intend to demonstrate that the recurrent image of ¡§pig¡¨ in the novel is a Gothicized racial stereotype of the Irish people. Through Francie¡¦s struggle with the pig image, the thesis examines Irish people¡¦s negotiation with their often derogatory racial stereotype. Finally, resorting to the Gothic device of ¡§double bind,¡¨ I attempt to expound McCabe¡¦s underlying sympathy for the homicidal and suicidal boy, who is depicted as both victim and murderer, both pig and butcher.

REIMAGINING THE BUTCHER BLOCK: HOW THE BUTCHERS OF SOUTH NINTH STREET CREATED THE ITALIAN MARKET

Goodall, Ruby January 2012 (has links)
This paper explores the development of authentic place through the story of Philadelphia's South Ninth Street Market butchers, and how they consciously highlighted their Italian immigrant heritage to respond to the changing postwar environment. Excellent sociological and historical studies of authenticity as a marketing tool have been written in the past decade, but have primarily focused on city development, corporate business models, and the consumer's search for authenticity. In this thesis, the main players are small businessmen - local butcher shop owners - and we look at their use of the history and heritage of their shops and neighborhood to strengthen their businesses and preserve their curb market. Between 1945 and 1975 these men transformed their businesses from routine neighborhood butcher shops into embodiments of a culinary community heritage. Focusing on these butcher shops illuminates the role that taste and food - and in this case, particularly meat - plays in linking the present with the past. Looking at newspaper articles featuring detailed descriptions and interviews of the mid-century market, and from the physical presence of the shops, this paper asks, what has changed? How did the market go from a grimy, everyday curb market to a tourist destination in just a few decades? And how have the butchers turn themselves into the historic heart of South Philadelphia? By answering these questions, we will be able to understand how the market's butchers championed their own authenticity and in doing so, remade the identity of the market. / History

"Twenty or Thirty or Forty Years Ago": Time, Posthistory, and the Hyper-Present in Patrick McCabe's The Butcher Boy

Killgore, Benjamin Moroni 01 September 2016 (has links)
This thesis is a commentary on Patrick McCabe's novel, The Butcher Boy, which was published in 1992. The novel is told through the perspective of the main character, Francie Brady, who through the majority of the narration is depicted as a young boy. Francie's life is riddled with tragedy with his moving from the loss of one important person in his life to another until the pain of these losses triggers a violent paranoid outburst resulting in the murder of the fixation of an obsession of his, Mrs. Nugent. This thesis looks at the events of the novel through the perspective and insight provided by Ursula K. Heise's theories of "posthistory" and the "hyper-present," as well as Paul Grainge's concepts of the "Mood" and the "Mode" of nostalgia.

Suing their way into the newsroom how women at the detroit news changed journalism

Palmeira, Amanda 01 May 2012 (has links)
The women's liberation movement in the 1970s and 1980s utilized various means for activism and demonstrations, but women also used the judicial system to fight for equality in the workplace. This study focuses specifically on the field of journalism and how female reporters used the courts to fight the gender discrimination that was widespread and unbridled before the creation of legislation that outlawed it. The lawsuit filed by Mary Lou Butcher and approximately 90 other women against The Detroit News is one such case that exemplifies the process of filing a gender discrimination lawsuit, as well as the events that led to the suits and the impact that it and similar lawsuits had on the field of journalism and the women's liberation movement as a whole. Using textual analysis to examine the coverage of these lawsuits by industry literature and by the publications challenged by the lawsuits demonstrates what the field of newspapers and magazines was like during the time of the cases. Comparing the same media during the times of the lawsuits and post-settlement reveal how they contributed to an adjusted view of female journalists and aided women's acceptance in American newsrooms.
