Understanding the sense of calling in the work context

Lee, Yun-Ping 02 September 2011 (has links)
The sense of calling has emerged as a burgeoning research interest for the past decade due to its tight connection to the meaning of work. However, the mechanism of the sense of calling, especially how it works in the work context remains unclear. This study aims at enhancing the understanding and knowledge of what the concept of calling is and how to apply it into organizations. Therefore, a cross-level model was proposed and the antecedents and consequences of calling along with the influence of organizational factors were examined. Data were collected from 24 organizations consisted of 186 employees, and hierarchical linear modeling techniques were applied to test the hypotheses. As a result, it is found that with certain personality traits (i.e., Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Openness), one¡¦s sense of calling is more easily to be discovered. On the other hand, it is also likely to foster or develop one¡¦s sense of calling through organization¡¦s manipulation (i.e., the emphasis of CSR and the supportive climate). More importantly, the positive impact of sense of calling on an individual¡¦s performance has been demonstrated. Consequently, by considering both organizational-level and individual-level factors into the mechanism of calling, a valuable insight and application of an individual¡¦s sense of calling in the work context have been established.

Digital arroyos and imaginary fences : assessing the impact of public policy, communication technologies, and commercial investment on Internet access in rural Texas

Nicholas, Kyle Hallett 11 February 2015 (has links)
One of the key complications in connecting citizens to the Internet is "remoteness," or distance from a community to the nearest metropolis. Rural areas often have higher communication and transportation costs, and have difficulty attracting investment and services in areas with insufficient telecommunication infrastructure. The communication perspective distinguishes communication from information transport, and asserts communication as the principal function of both technology and policy. The study utilizes a political economy approach to examine the interaction of specific Internet technologies, Universal Service and Texas Expanded Local Calling (ELC) policies, and commercial investment patterns with Internet access in rural Texas. A statistical analysis of 208 rural telephone exchanges was conducted to determine the relationship between Internet access, demographic characteristics and the presence of ELC policy. A concentrated case study of seven rural Texas counties, including interviews with Internet Service Providers, determined the quality and bandwidth of rural connections and the viability of state policy in addressing access issues for remote citizens. Remote communities were far less likely to have Internet access. However, those communities with ELC were much more likely to be connected than their counterparts. ELC policy favors those communities closer to metropolitan areas and served by major telephone carriers. The specific rules of ELC policy eliminate the neediest communities from regulatory relief. Rural citizens also are more likely to have Internet access in areas served by major carriers, with relatively low Hispanic populations and relatively high incomes. There are fewer ISPs in remote regions and those few are rarely prosperous. Bandwidth is generally lower, prices can be higher, and fewer services are offered. This study indicates the importance of the "last mile" of telecommunications infrastructure in connecting citizens to the Internet and highlights the need to examine a complex array of factors that condition the discursive and expressive potential of citizens in our communication age. / text

The experience of organisational commitment, work engagement and meaning of work of nursing staff in hospitals / Ilka Beukes

Beukes, Ilka January 2011 (has links)
Nursing as a profession presents an interesting context for studying meaning of work, as it centres on the care of patients; the motivation behind choosing such a profession. Furthermore, taking into consideration the current economic situation and the shortage of nurses in the country, it is important to investigate the kind of impact that the meaning they receive from their work may have on their commitment to the hospital and their level of engagement in their work. What nurses do and how well they do it relates directly to the quality of care the patient receives. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between meaning of work, organisational commitment and work engagement among nurses of various hospitals in the Vaal Triangle. Also investigated were biographical factors such as gender, race, age, citizenship, qualification, years of service, job level and employment status. A survey design was used on a sample of nurses (N = 199) in hospitals. A biographical questionnaire, the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and Work-Life Questionnaire were administered. The statistical analyses were carried out by means of SPSS (2009). Factor analyses were conducted to determine construct validity and Cronbach’s alphas and inter-item correlation coefficients assessed the internal consistency of the instruments. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from 0,94 to 0,62 were obtained for the above-mentioned questionnaires. Results showed that the majority of nurses viewed their work as either a job or a calling. More African nurses viewed their work as a calling than did any other race group. Younger workers, specifically those with a Grade 12 qualification, viewed their work as a career, while the more experienced nurses and those on management level viewed their work as either a career or a calling. Furthermore, nurses viewing their work as a calling are more committed to the organisation and more engaged in their work, whereas nurses viewing their work as a job are less committed and engaged. Lastly, a positive relationship exists between organisational commitment and work engagement. Therefore, the more strongly nurses view their work as a calling, the more committed they will be to the hospital and the more engaged they will be in their work. Based on the above findings, recommendations were made for the hospitals and future research. / MCom, Industrial Psychology, North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2011

This work is an anthropological analysis of the diocesan seminarians and the phenomenon of Catholic priestly vocation. In order to examine this particular ethnographic context, the analysis of issues on the mechanisms that influence the seminarians to choose the priestly life, as relations with the institution and the religious community are established. And also examine the ruptures and continuities of institutional formation of Catholic seminaries and seminarians in the Brazilian context. To this end, it was necessary to also present some arguments on the context in which it is the Brazilian Catholicism. Based on a qualitative methodology, interviews and questionnaires applications with the actors involved in the study were performed. Besides pointing to the socio-economic-cultural profile of Catholic seminarians, this paper proposes a concentric model analysis of Catholic vocation, enabling a new interpretive bias for the vocation phenomenon.

Určování genetických variant z masivně paralelních sekvenačních dat pomocí lokálních reassembly / Variant calling using local reference-helped assemblies

Dráb, Martin January 2017 (has links)
Despite active development during past years, the task of sequencing a genome still remains a challenge. Our current technologies are not able to read the whole genome in one piece. Instead, we shatter the target genome into a large amounts of small pieces that are then sequenced separately. The process of assembling these small pieces together, in order to obtain sequence of the whole genome, is painful and rsource-consuming. Multiple algorithms to solve the assembly problem were developed. This thesis presents yet another assembly algorithm, based on the usage of de Bruijn graphs, and focusing on sequencing short genome regions. The algorithm is compared to well-known solutions in the field. 1

’n Teologies-empiriese ondersoek na die rol wat gemeentebou in die beplanning en oprigting van kerkkomplekse binne die Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk Van Afrika die afgelope tien jaar gespeel het (Afrikaans)

Truter, Jan Hendrik Lodewyk 23 May 2006 (has links)
This thesis includes a literary, as well as an empirical study examining the degree to which congregations within the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika took church growth into consideration in the planning and erection of church centres during the past ten years. The methodology of practical theology is reflected by means of three concepts, namely: understanding, explanation and change. This study focuses mainly on the first two concepts - expressed as the hermeneutical understanding and the empirical reality. The third concept could be examined in a further study, in conjunction with research already done in this study. The hermeneutical understanding or theory was researched with two focal points in mind, namely: the theological perspective - in which the emphasis was firstly on the identity of the Church in Christ and secondly on the calling of the Church, expressed in the missio Dei and discipleship. The other focal point was the Biblical ideal, as it appears in the Word and is interpreted by theological traditions. The second action in this methodology was the empirical measurement in order to verify whether this hermeneutical understanding in reality, was negotiated within the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika. Apart from a few exceptions, the conclusion reached is that the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika did not consider church growth in the planning and erection of its church centres. It also became clear that the Church’s calling is aimed internally and not externally and the Church does not fulfil its mission- and discipleship calling. / Dissertation (MA (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Exploring Calling Work Orientation: Construct Clarity and Organizational Implications

Newness, Kerry A 15 October 2013 (has links)
Employees maintain a personal view toward their work, which can be referred to as their work orientation. Some employees view their work as their life’s purpose (i.e., calling work orientation) and they tend to be 1) prosocially motivated, 2) derive meaning from work, and 3) feel that their purpose is from beyond the self. The purpose of the current dissertation was to differentiate calling work orientation from other similar workplace constructs, to investigate the most common covariates of calling work orientation, and to empirically test two possible moderators of the relationship between calling work orientation and work-related outcomes of job satisfaction, job performance, and work engagement. Two independent samples were collected for the purpose of testing hypotheses: data were collected from 520 working students and from 520 non-student employees. Participants from the student sample were recruited at Florida International University, and participants from the employee sample were recruited via the Amazon Mechanical Turk website. Participants from the student sample answered demographic questions and responded to self-report measures of job satisfaction, job performance, work engagement, spirituality, meaningful work, prosocial motivation, and work orientation. The procedure was similar for the employee sample, but their survey also included measures of counterproductive work behaviors, organizational citizenship behaviors, conscientiousness, and numerical ability. Additionally, employees were asked whether they would be willing to have a direct supervisor, peer, co-worker, client, or subordinate rate their job performance. Hierarchical regression findings suggest calling work orientation was predictive of overall job performance above and beyond two common predictors of performance, conscientiousness and numerical ability. The results for the covariate analyses provided evidence that prosocial motivation, meaningful work, and spirituality do play a significant role in the development of an employees’ work orientation. Perceived career opportunities moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and job performance for the employee sample. Core self-evaluations moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and job performance, and core self-evaluations moderated the relationship between calling work orientation and work engagement. Collectively, findings from the current study highlight the benefits of examining work orientation in the prediction of workplace outcomes.
