Identity of African American Characters in Newbery Medal and Newbery Honor Award Winning Books: a Critical Content Analysis of Books From 1991 to 2011

Morton, Tami Butler 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to conduct a critical content analysis of the African American characters found in Newbery Medal award winning books recognized between the years of 1991 and 2011. The John Newbery Medal is a highly regarded award in the United States for children's literature and esteemed worldwide. Children's and adolescents' books receive this coveted award for the quality of their writing. Though these books are recognized for their quality writing, there is no guideline in the award criteria that evaluated the race and identity of the characters. Hence, there are two overarching research questions that guided this study. The first question asked: To what extent are the African American characters in each award winning book represented? Foci in answering this question were the frequency of African American characters and the development of their ethnic identities. The second question asked: How are the African American characters' intergroup attitudes and interactions represented? Foci in answering this question examined the frequency of intergroup interactions and the characters' attitudes within the context of each book. The theoretical framework that undergirded this study is critical literacy, which encourages adults and youth to examine issues of diversity and social justice through their reading. Eighteen books met the criteria for the study, which provided 98 African American characters for investigation through content analysis. The qualitative methodology used frequency counts, anecdotal notes and questionnaires to analyze the characters. Findings revealed two key themes: the characterization of ethnic identity as a reflection of society and African American characters as models of agency. Further themes became evident in this study as well: the evolution of cultural authenticity, strong African American female characters, importance of the African American family and the acknowledgement of African American involvement in history. These findings are significant because they provided evidence of the potential of these Newbery award winning books to be the catalyst for critical classroom conversations on identity and agency. Findings also provided increasingly strong examples of ethnic role models within these notable titles.

Biosystematic Study of a Desmodium Complex

Williams, John G., 1949- 12 1900 (has links)
An examination of the Desmodium canescens complex (D. canescens; D. tweedyi; D. illinoense) has resulted in the delimitation of a previously unreported alliance between D. canescens and D. tweedyi. The following points support this view: (a) morphological data taken from herbarium and garden specimens indicate that for many characters, the mean values of D. canescens and D. tweedy are not significantly different (b) breeding experiments have shown that artificial interspecific hybridization is possible between D. canescens and D. tweedyi (c) cytological studies have shown that D. canescens and D. tweedyi have a base number of x = 11, while D. illinoense has a base number of x = 10. A new combination is suggested: Desmodium canescens var. tweedyi (Britt.) Williams.

The Beneficent Characters in William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha Novels

Bryant, Deborah N. 05 1900 (has links)
In William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha novels, a group of characters exists who possess three common characteristics--a closeness to mankind, a realization of the tragedy in life, and a positive response to this tragedy. The term beneficent is used to describe the twenty individuals who possess these traits. The characters are divided into two broad categories. The first includes the white and black primitives who innately possess beneficent qualities. The term primitive describes the individual who exhibits three additional traits--simplicity, nonintellectualism, and closeness to nature. The second group includes characters who must learn the attributes of beneficence in the course of the novel. All the beneficent characters serve as embodiments of the optimism found in Faulkner's fiction.

Dětští hrdinové v tvorbě Miguela Delibese / The children heroes in the production of Miguel Delibes

Rejmontová, Karolína January 2011 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to analyze children's characters in the novels of El Camino, Mi idolatrado hijo Sisí and El príncipe destronado. After a brief summary of children characters within Delibes novels, we focus on analyzing common aspects of children heroes, on feelings of anxiety and fear, the importance of background, in which the child grows up, we concentrate on teenagers problems and children's evolution, we focus on the way how children speak and on the analysis of hilarious moments, which are originated from the children's innocence of the world. This thesis intends to take into account all these aspects. In the second part we dedicate to composition of the novel that Delibes completely conformed to the novels intention. The children characters are explored in the context of other characters, taking into account the point of the social background and related problems. In the final chapter we compare the novels to the film production.

Postava dítěte u Adalberta Stiftera / The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter

Petrusová, Kateřina January 2011 (has links)
Petrusová, Kateřina (2011): The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter. Prague: Institute of Germanic Studies, Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. This thesis deals with the role of children at the work of Adalbert Stifter, an Austrian author of the first half of the 19th century, born in Horni Plana (Oberplan) in Southern Bohemia. Adalbert Stifter was not just a writer and a painter but also a pedagogue (he worked as a supervisor of elementary schools for Upper Austria). All these activities, in association with his life experience and personal problems, were reflected in his literary work. I mainly focus on his three works: collections Studies (Studien), Colored Stones (Bunte Steine) and the novel (Bildungsroman) Indian Summer (Der Nachsommer). Childhood already appears in his early work, considered as a period of human development (Menschenwerdung). In Stifter's later stories, for example in his collection Bunte Steine, the characters of children are at the forefront: they are always confronted with the adult world and especially with the powerful laws of nature. This relationship is formulated in the foreword to this collection in the form of Stifter's gentle law (das sanfte Gesetz). The whole concept of the child is completed in the novel Der Nachsommer, where a...

Úloha postav v japonské vizuální kultuře / The Role of Characters in Japanese Visual Culture

Flesch, David January 2013 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis is the analysis of fictional characters, their role in Japanese visual culture and society in general. For a better understanding of the argumentation that follows in chapters 2 to 4, I first introduce the reader to the world of postwar Japanese visual culture, its most iconic works and characters. In the following chapter I observe fictional characters from a psychological and sociological standpoint, and highlight their significance for contemporary society. Chapters 3 and 4 are dedicated to some of the most significant subcultures in postwar Japan - the shojo and otaku. In each of these chapters I first offer a synopsis of their respective histories and proceed to analyze some of the main trends associated with these subcultures; trends that have subsequently led to a major shift in consumer culture and a significant popularization of characters, the character business and its products. I argue that the most significant phenomenon associated with shojo culture is kawaii, the aesthetic of cuteness. Kawaii is arguably one of the defining aesthetic categories of contemporary Japan and is closely linked to postwar visual culture and the character goods industry. In the case of otaku, passionate consumers and fans of visual culture and modern media, I have focused on...

As formas dramáticas do cômico e do trágico em La Celestina / The dramatic forms of comic and tragic in La Celestina

Santos, Eleni Nogueira dos 19 June 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examines four characters of the work Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea or La Celestina attributed to Fernando de Rojas. The analysis shows, from critical and theoretical readings, elements of comicality and tragic in the path of the characters Calisto, Centurio, Celestina and Melibea. The text consists of an introduction, three chapters and final considerations. In the Introduction, a brief history of the main comments attributed to the work is presented, primarily related to its literary genre. In the first chapter, we point out some of the various forms of humor which provide laughter in the behavior of the characters Calisto and Centurio; in the second chapter, we present the elements belonging to the theories of tragedy in its classical and modern sense, which are present or are related to the actions of Melibea; similarly, in the third and final chapter, we indicated the possible tragic elements in the behavior of Celestina. And finally, the closing comments, in which, after the analysis, we believe the male characters, Calisto and Centurio, play a comic role in the piece, while the two women, Celestina and Melibea, are responsible for most of the tragic aspects of the work.
