Modal Shift Forecasting Models for Transit Service PlanningIdris, Ahmed 09 January 2014 (has links)
This research aims at developing a better understanding of commuters preferences and mode switching behaviour towards local transit for work trips. The proposed methodological approach incorporates three main stages. The first introduces a conceptual framework for modal shift maximized transit route design model that extends the use of demand models beyond forecasting transit ridership to the operational extent of transit route design. The second deals with designing and implementing a socio-psychometric COmmuting Survey for MOde Shift (COSMOS). Finally, the third stage focuses on developing econometric choice models of mode switching behaviour towards public transit.
Advanced mode shift models are developed using state-of-the-art methodology of combining Revealed Preference (RP) and Stated Preference (SP) information. The results enriched our understanding of mode switching behaviour and revealed some interesting findings. Some socio-psychological variables have shown to have strong influence on mode shift and improved the models in terms of fitness and statistical significance. In an indication of the superiority of the car among other travel options, strong car use habit formation was realized for car drivers, making it hard to persuade them to switch to public transit. Further, unlike conventional choice models, the developed mode shift models showed that travel cost and in-vehicle travel time are of lower importance compared to other transit Level of Service (LOS) attributes such as waiting time, service reliability, number of transfers, transit technology, and crowding level. The results also showed that passengers are more likely to shift to rail-based modes (e.g. LRT and subway) than rubber-tyred modes (e.g. BRT). On the other hand, the availability of park-and-ride facilities as well as both schedule and real-time information provision did not appear to be significant for mode switching to public transit for work trips.
This research provides evidence that mode shift is a complex process which involves socio-psychological variables beside common socio-demographic and modal attributes. The developed mode switching models present a new methodologically sound tool for evaluating the impacts of alternative transit service designs on travel behaviour. Such tool is more desirable for transit service planning than the traditional ones and can aid in precisely estimating transit ridership.

Unknown Date (has links)

Représentations du monde et symbolique élémentaire / Representations of the world and elementary symbolismDéglise-Coste, Béatrice 21 June 2013 (has links)
Confronting different philosophical, religious and literary pieces of work, this thesis studies the concept of representation through the use of the four elements: Air, Earth, Water and Fire. Through the similar notions of participation, analogy, fold or flesh which bring up the question of relationship between body and soul, we realize that the representation, or staging, is an obvious way to understand this relationship, and is also, paradoxically, a way for the subject to put a distance between himself and the world. How can we understand this "presence-absence" ambivalence? In order to do it we have to question the relationship between objectivity and subjectivity and furthermore the one between intimacy and otherness. We want to demonstrate that these four elements, these raw materials also known as "hormones of the imagination" in Gaston Bachelard's work, are, in practical terms, a link between our senses and our mind. Using the medium "image" they help us to understand how we perceive different symbolisms. Therefore, they are metaphors of a representation process open upon the thinking and the creative worlds. Beyond studying the connection between feelings and thoughts, we are interested in the senses themselves: how do they affect our perception of the world? How does literature use the symbolic nature of the elements in order to express a subjectivity and to share a common spirituality? Why do human beings need to dramatize life and add a sacred dimension to it?

O Cosmos no Corpus : Vitrúvio e as estruturas do universo no tratado da arquiteturaMafra, Adriano Vilela January 2017 (has links)
Orientadora: Profª. Drª. Anastasia Guidi Itokazu / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia, São Bernardo do Campo, 2017. / A pesquisa investiga a arquitetura do universo tal como proposta por Vitrúvio no
século I a.C.
The present research investigates the architecture of the universe as proposed by
Vitruvius in the first century BC. The arts and disciplines of architecture related to the
practices of gnomonics and the context surrounding the architect in Antiquity are
presented, as well as some political and religious aspects that end up integrating the
discourse about the structures of the universe as described in the Treatise on
Architecture. The book is hereby presented as an object translated and transformed
over thousands of years and some reflections on the drawings and paintings are
proposed. Comments and developments regarding the cosmology required for the
elaborations of maps and illustrations are also examined in the text provided by the
architect. Finally, some of the the theories of authors that precede the period of the
work and who provided the teachings for Vitruvius' graftings were investigated, as
well the applications tof terms that are presented as constitutive definitions of the
architecture, the book being taken as a product of this art.

Duše a kosmos v Platónově Tímaiu / Soul and Cosmos in Plato's TimaeusStránský, Jiří January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the problem of soul in Plato's Timaeus while paying due respect to its close connection with the topics of cosmology and cosmogony. The inquiry proceeds from the highest level of the cosmos itself to the lowest level of the souls of mortal beings. In the first chapter, an important question, whether the cosmos singularly came into being or not is being examined. In this context, two traditional approaches are distinguished and it is argued that a proper answer to this question has to contain some elements of them both. The second chapter examines the nature of Plato's maker of this world, the demiurge. It is argued that he is a primordial deity who should not be identified with any aspect of the created cosmos or the intelligible being and who not only creates the bodily world and its soul but serves as a sort of paradigm for the soul in respect to its capacities as well. The topics of soul and cosmos blend equally in the third chapter which is devoted to the world-soul. It concentrates on three main topics which are relevant also for the souls occupying a lower position in the hierarchy. These are the blending of the soul that explains its basic properties, the structuring of the soul and attributing it a particular motion and finally the problem of cognition...

Gandhi and the Romans: On the Interrelationships of Cosmos, Memory, Founding Violence, and Freedom in the Pax Gandhiana/RomanaAllen, Michael 31 March 2020 (has links)
Rather than separating moral and political virtue through reason of state, the Pax Romana presents a sophisticated moral-political vision of the interrelationships between cosmology, memory, founding, violence, and freedom. Nevertheless, its complex integrative vision is also perilous to humanity, demanding a morality of forbearing the adverse consequences of endless cycles of political violence. Pax Gandhiana presents an alternative integrative vision engaging many of the same concerns as the Romans, such as cosmos, ubiquitous violence, and freedom. By contrast, however, its political vision demands forbearing the adverse consequences of repudiating as opposed to embracing the ubiquity of violence in the cosmos. Hence, Pax Romana and Pax Gandhiana rest on closely related but ultimately very different political visions. Consistent with Gandhi, my objective in this article is to show how the Romans provide us with an object lesson in why we should repudiate such violence, as guaranteeing our downfall into misery, chaos, and even madness.

Accumulation of Divine ServiceAtwood, Blaine Lee 01 March 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Accumulation of Divine Service is a ceramic installation referencing the sublime attribute of service, and how it relates to our temporal existence. Many aspects of the sublime are implemented into the contemporary art world today. The sublime can refer to ideas from terror to joy, and all across the spectrum of human emotions. The unifying element that seems to tie them together is a quality of awe-inspiring greatness, or the metaphysically divine. These attributescan inspire the mind and often lead one to dwell on the existence of a Supreme Being or Deity, what His purposes are, and how we as mortals work with or for that purpose. This installation encompasses some of my thoughts on the divinity that I believe dwells within all mankind. I do this by incorporating into the installation two repeated elements, the finial and the mug. The finial is an architectural element that is implemented at the apex of most religious meetinghouses. It is used for this purpose because it points toward the heavens and lifts the mind upward toward God. The mug, on the other hand, is one of the most humble and universal ceramic service vessels. It is used around the world as a drinking container whose sole purpose is service, or to give life-sustaining nourishment to mankind. The combination of these two visual elements seeks to encompass my personal art practice, my research, and the element of the sublime that we all possess.
