Bey, Anissa 14 November 2008 (has links)
Precise measurements of Fermi superallowed 0+? 0+ ß decays provide a powerful tool to study the weak interaction properties in the framework of the Standard Model (SM). Collectively, the comparative half-lives (ƒt) of these transitions allow a sensitive probe of the CVC hypothesis and contribute to the most demanding test of the unitarity of the quarks-mixing CKM matrix top-row, by providing, so far, the most accurate determination of its dominant element (Vud). Until recently, an apparent departure from unity enhanced a doubt on the validity of the minimal SM and thus stimulated a considerable effort in order to extend the study to other Fermi emitters available. The 62Ga and 38Ca are among key nuclei to achieve these precision tests and verify the reliability of the corrections applied to the experimental ƒt-values. The 62Ga ß-decay was investigated at the IGISOL separator in Jyväskylä, with an experimental setup composed of 3 EUROBALL Clovers for ?-ray detection. Very weak intensity (<1‰) ?-rays were identified, via ß-? and ß-?-? correlations, and allowed a partial decay scheme reconstruction in 62Zn. The newly established analog branching-ratio (B.R.A = 99.893(24) %) was used to compute the universal Ft-value (62Ga). The latter turned out to be in good agreement with the 12 well-known cases. Compatibility between the upper limit set here on the term (d1IM) and the theoretical prediction suggests that the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction is indeed large for the heavy (A = 62) ß-emitters. The study of the 38a decay was performed at the CERN- ISOLDE facility. Injection of fluorine into the ion source, in order to chemically select the isotopes of interest, assisted by the REXTRAP Penning trap facility and a TOF analysis, enabled us to eliminate efficiently the troublesome 38mK. For the first time, the 38Ca half-life is measured with a highly purified radioactive sample. The preliminary result obtained, T1/2(38Ca) = 445.8(10) ms, improves the precision on the half-life as determined from previous measurements by a factor close to 10.

Corporate-Startup integration: Understanding the types of startups manufacturing corporates are interested in and how to achieve a successful integration / Corporate-Startup integrering: Förståelse för vilka typer av startups som stora tillverkande företag är intresserade av och hur de ska nå en framgångsrik integration

Cederhage, Ludvig, Backman, Ebba January 2023 (has links)
KPMG has recognized that large manufacturing corporates in Sweden are experiencing impaired growth possibilities and have therefore started to turn to startups to help with innovation. Corporates have traditionally focused on growth through product improvement or market expansion but have recently started to shift their focus to acquisitions and partnerships with high potential startups. However, since there are many differences between corporates and startups the collaboration can be difficult to handle, especially when it comes to integration. This study aims to investigate what types of startups large corporates are currently looking to collaborate with and to create a practical framework that can act as a guide to increase the chance of successfully integrating a startup into a corporate's operations. This study is a qualitative study that examines several Swedish manufacturing companies by delving into their specific cases. A thematic analysis, document and literature review is presented, and the results indicate that Swedish manufacturing corporates want startups with technologies that boost digital transformation (AI, IoT, digital twins) to increase predictability, traceability, and optimization. They also want to increase sustainability initiatives in terms of both technologies and materials. This is followed by a framework for how a successful corporate-startupintegration should be done. The results from the study contribute to the work of improving collaboration between startups and corporates and the results from this study can help create economic benefits, promote social sustainability, and address environmental challenges more effectively.

Mécanismes de croissance des nanotubes de carbone étudiés par spectroscopie Raman in situ et ex situ / Study of growth of SWNT by in situ and ex situ Raman spectroscopy

Navas, Hugo 01 March 2013 (has links)
This experimental work deals with the influence of CVD growth parameters on carbon nanotube structural properties. The study is based on in situ and ex situ Raman spectroscopy on samples synthesized under various conditions of growth. A work on oxidized cobalt films showed that the threshold pressure for nanotube growth depends on the thickness of the cobalt film. We assign this pressure to a threshold pressure of reduction. A study of the D-band and G'-band allowed to assign low-frequency components to SWNT and high-frequency components to carbonaceous co-products of synthesis. This new approach allowed a fine study of defects which led to a model for defect creation in SWNT grown by CVD. A systematic study of RBM showed the processes leading to the preferential growth of small- or medium-diameter SWNT. Thus, control of catalyst thickness, of carbonaceous precursor nature and partial pressure or of synthesis temperature allows to control the diameter distribution of SWNT.

Caracterização do comportamento alimentar de Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) em citros e suas implicações na transmissão de Xylella fastidosa / Characterization of feeding behavior of Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in citrus and its implications for transmission of Xylella fastidiosa

Miranda, Marcelo Pedreira de 24 March 2008 (has links)
Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-limited bacterium transmitted mainly by leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in the subfamily Cicadellinae. In Brazil, it is the causal agent of Citrus variegated chlorosis, a disease that affects sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck]. The goal of this research was to characterize the feeding behavior of the cicadeline vector Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg) in citrus and correlate its feeding activities with transmission of X. fastidiosa. Initially, choice tests and honeydew excretion analyses were carried out to determine preferred feeding sites and periods on citrus nursery trees. B. xanthophis preferred the stems of young shoots, in the upper part of the plant. This species ingested sap from the xylem vessels and showed larger excretion volume and higher proportion of excreting individuals during the day. Thus, vector stylet penetration was studied on the stem of citrus shoots in the photophase, by using the Electrical Penetration Graph (EPG, DC system) technique. The main EPG waveforms were correlated with histological and honeydew excretion analyses to determine the precise stylet position in the plant tissue and feeding activities. Six waveforms and proposed activities are described: (S) secretion of salivary sheath and intracellular pathway; (R) stylets inserted into the plant, without any apparent activity; (X) contact of stylets with xylem vessels; (Xi) active xylem ingestion; (I) interruption between X and Xi; and (W) stylet withdrawal from the plant. During a probe, the most likely sequence of events is stylet pathway (S) through epidermal and parenchymal cells (all individuals), followed by contact with xylem (X) (67.6% of all individuals) and then active ingestion (Xi) (88.3% of those that exhibit waveform X). The xylem was reached after an average of 2.2 probes. The mean time to contact the xylem (X) and initiate ingestion (Xi) after onset of the first probe was 27.8 and 34.2 min, respectively. However, sustained xylem ingestion (Xi > 5 min) was established only after 39.8 min, on average. In a second study, the waveforms S, X and Xi were correlated with X. fastidiosa acquisition and inoculation in citrus. Acquisition of X. fastidiosa from infected plants occurred only after onset of the pathogen to 7.7% of test plants. In healthy plants, inoculation took place during waveform Xi (xylem ingestion); but with just 1 h in Xi, B. xanthophis subsequently transmitted waveforms S (salivary sheath formation and stylet pathway), S+X (X= first xylem contact by stylets) and S+X+X1, with efficiencies of 3.5, 7.1 and 7.4%, respectively. Although higher transmission rates were recorded after the first contact with xylem (S+X and S+X+Xi), it is intriguing the fact that inoculation of this xylem-limited bacterium also occurred before that (during S). Finally, the effect of X. fastidiosa infection on the feeding behavior of B. xanthophis was studied by comparing stylet penetration on: a) healthy citrus; b) symptomless infected citrus; c) infected citrus with CVC symptoms. Based on the analysis of 26 EPG parameters, no significant differences were found in stylet penetration on healthy versus asymptomatic infected citrus. Symptomatic infection did not affect the ability of B. xanthophis to locate xylem vessels, but reduced the time spend by this vector ingesting xylem sap. These results suggest that X. fastidiosa acquisition may be more efficient on symptomless infected plants than on citrus with severe CVC symptoms. Information on vector feeding behavior is basic for future studies on transmission mechanisms of X. fastidiosa and to establish control strategies aimed to interfere with this process.

Linn, Öman Olsson, Mikaela, Neuendorf January 2019 (has links)
Background: Prior to treatment, patients with haematological disease receives a tunnelled central venous catheter in local anesthesia. It is common for patients who are awake during surgery to experience anxiety. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe how patients suffering from hematological diseases experience tunelled central venous cathetrization in local anesthesia and how their experience could be improved. Design: Semistructured interviews using an interview guide with open-ended questions where performed with 10 patients. Data were analysed with systematic text condensation according to Malterud. Result: The included patients had an overall positive experience from recieving a tunelled central venous catheter. The patients described how continuous information and good care improved their experience of recieving a tunelled central venous catheter. Four themes were identified in the result; 1- having mental a strenght made the patients feel relieved and prepared, 2- being exposed to an environment where pain and discomfort were present, 3- being taken care of by experienced professionals contributed to a calm atmosphere, 4- previous experiences and information reduced anxiety and promoted an increased feeling of safety Conclusion: The present study shows the potential to make patients experiences better by simple means, for example by giving more distinct information, raising the temperature in the operating room and by the nurse anesthetist acting more supportive when patients feel anxiety. The information and nursing care need to be more personalized and professionals need to practice in order to improve.

High-Precision Branching Ratio Measurement for the Superallowed β+ Emitter 74Rb

Dunlop, Ryan 24 April 2012 (has links)
Precision measurements of superallowed Fermi β-decay allow for stringent tests of the magnitude of isospin-symmetry-breaking effects in nuclei, the validity of the conserved vector current hypothesis, and the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix. A high-precision measurement of the branching ratio for the superallowed β+ decay of 74Rb has been performed at the Isotope Separator and ACcelerator (ISAC) facility at TRIUMF. The 8π spectrometer, an array of 20 HPGe detectors, was used to detect γ-rays emitted following the Gamow-Teller and non-analogue Fermi β-decays of 74Rb. PACES, an array of 5 Si(Li) detectors, was used to detect emitted conversion electrons, while half of SCEPTAR, a close-packed array of 10 plastic scintillators, was used to detect emitted β particles. In this experiment, 23 excited states were identified in 74Kr which were populated following the β-decay of 74Rb. A total of 58 γ-rays were identified following the 8.241(4)x108 detected β-particles. An observed non-superallowed branching ratio of 0.396(7)% was determined from the intensity of the identified γ-rays, while the unobserved non-superallowed intensity was calculated to be 0.05(5)%, leading to a superallowed branching ratio of 99.55(5)%. The superallowed branching ratio is now the most precise experimental quantity in the determination of the superallowed ft-value of 74Rb. Combining the half-life and Q-value with the superallowed branching ratio measured in this work leads to a superallowed ft-value of 3082.6(66) s. Finally, comparisons between the superallowed ft-value, the world average Ft-value, and the non-analogue Fermi branching ratio are made to provide future guidance in the refinement of the theoretical models required to describe the crucial isospin-symmetry-breaking term in superallowed β-decay.

Nygren, Cecilia, Nyåkers, Erika January 2018 (has links)
Introduction: Healthcare-related infections are a major problem in today's healthcare and one of the most common care related infections in the intensive care unit is catheter related. A central venous catheter (CVC) is a vascular access commonly found in intensive care units, and the maintenance is commonly performed by the nurses. The preventive work is therefore important in reducing the incidence of CVC-related infections and by that increasing the patient safety.   Aim: The aim of the study was to describe what part of maintenance regarding the CVC performed by nurses in adult patients in the intensive care unit that reduces the risk of healthcare-related infections. Method: A structured literature study was conducted and studies with a quantitative design were compiled. The results were analyzed with an inductive content analysis. The number of articles included in the results were 18. Main results: The main results of the study were based on five themes which were preventive measures. The results were mechanical cleaning with disinfectants of needleless connectors and three-way stop cork, daily evaluation of the patients need for a CVC, chlorhexidine dressing, daily chlorhexidine baths and education of staff. These areas were seen to reduce the risk and incidence of CVC-related infections. Conclusion: It is important that there is a consensus of the guidelines regarding the preventions of CVC-related infections both locally and nationally. The guidelines should be based on the best available evidence to reduce CVC-related infections in the intensive care unit. The purpose is to perform equal care and to promote patient safety.

An Examination of the Effects of Using Systematic and Engaging Early Literacy to Teach Tier 3 Students to Read Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) Words

Marshall, Esther 13 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
A single-subject-multiple-baseline-across-behaviors design was used to examine the effects of using Systematic and Engaging Early Literacy (SEEL) instruction to help Tier 3 kindergarten students learn to read CVC words. Four students designated as Tier 3 by their teachers participated in the study. They were grouped into two dyads and received SEEL instruction focusing on specific word reading targets for approximately 20 minutes four days per week over a seven-week time period. The instruction included meaningful, interactive activities and incorporated high levels of play, multiple exposures to the target, explicit instruction, and student-teacher conversational exchanges. Baseline assessment data were collected prior to the application of the intervention for each of the targets and assessment data continued to be collected after each intervention session. All students learned to read the target words and three of the students generalized their learning to other targets. A moderate to large effect size of 0.54 was obtained using Cohen's r value. The need for adequate exposure to targets and time to practice was highlighted, along with the value of revisiting targets and addressing individual student's needs when working in small groups.

Att förebygga CVK-relaterade infektioner i blodbanan : En litteraturstudie om sjuksköterskans förebyggande vård / To prevent CVC-related bloodstream infections : A literature review of the nurse’s preventive care

Barsk, Linnea January 2016 (has links)
Background: CVC-related bloodstream infections often lead to prolonged hospitalization, increased mortality, higher economical cost and more suffering for the patient. The usage of central venous catheters increases and therefore the risk of infection is also higher. When it comes to prevention of these infections there is a lack of knowledge amongst nurses and compliance with the guidelines. Aim: Describe how the nurse can prevent CVC-related bloodstream infections. Method: General literature review of quantitative studies. Results: A combination of education, hands-on initiatives such as management, hygieneroutines and checklists as well as feedback turned out to reduce CVC-related bloodstream infections. Conclusions: Education, different hands-on initiatives and feedback decreases the number of CVC-related bloodstream infection and is essential for the nurse’s preventive care. Most of the results correlate with the guidelines for the prevention of CVC-related bloodsteam infections, nevertheless education and feedback should be prioritized in higher extent. It is known that adherence to guidelines among nurses would facilitate the execution of evidence-based nursing. Therefore more focus should be on having nurses follow the guidelines. Clinical importance: This study would contribute with increased knowledge amongst nurses regarding prevention of CVC-related bloodstream infections which would give better care, diminish the suffering of the patient, decrease mortality and lead to economical benefits.
