Identity, politics and piety : the intellectual remaking of Catholicism in the Archdiocese of Glasgow 1918-1965

Williamson, Clifford January 2000 (has links)
Traditionally, the historical study of the Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Glasgow has centred on the building of the Catholic community and the implications of its ethnic background. Little or no attention has been made to the intellectual contribution of Catholics to the questions of identity, Catholic politics and devotional trends. Similarly, the previous study of Catholicism in Scotland has been based on local issues with little or no reference to the place of Scottish Catholicism in the mainstream of European developments in the Roman Catholic Church. This work seeks to redress the balance through a comprehensive examination of four themes. Firstly, the impact of Catholic social teaching on the senior Catholic lay organisation, the Catholic Union of the Archdiocese of Glasgow. Secondly, an examination of the distinctive contribution of Catholics in the Archdiocese to piety and devotion, focussing on the Lourdes Grotto at Carfm and the Legion of Mary. The third theme i s an assessment of the role played by the Glasgow Circle of the Newman Association, in the post Second World War years, in the mobilisation of the Catholic intelligentsia, through the development of a devolved Scottish Council of the Newman Association and the promotion of reform within the Catholic Church leading up to the Second Vatican Council in 1962. The fourth theme is a discussion of the writing of Scottish history and the contributions made by Catholic scholars to a revision of the orthodoxies on the role of Catholicism in Scotland. Through the examination of these themes, this work argues that there was a coherent attempt to remake the image and character of Catholicism in the Archdiocese of Glasgow, which had implications for the overall standing of Catholicism in Scotland. It is argued that, far from being divorced from trends in Catholicism in continental Europe, developments in Scottish Catholicism, though distinctive, must be seen in the light of changes in Catholic thinking in Europe.

Guzikauskas, Alvydas 31 January 2013 (has links)
Temos aktualumas ir problematika. Remiantis Bažnyčios mokymu galima pažymėti, kad suaugusiųjų ugdymas(is) turi būti didžiausias šiuolaikinės Bažnyčios rūpestis. Tyrimo klausimas. Kokie svarbiausi suaugusiųjų tikinčiųjų bendruomeninio gyvenimo Katalikų Bažnyčioje ugdymo(si) ypatumai ir kaip jie reiškiasi X parapijoje. Tyrimo objektas. Suaugusių tikinčiųjų bendruomeninio gyvenimo ugdymas(is). Darbo tikslas. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The relevance and topic of the theme. According to the Church's teaching adult (self) education should be the main concern of the modern Church. It is necessary to mobilize believers in open and lively communities in which the Word of God would be proclaimed, the Eucharist would be celebrated and the neighbor’s love actions would be fulfilled. The Second Vatican Council emphasized that by the (self) education of adult believers’ communal life the faith would become lively, aware and active. However, the resolutions of the Second Vatican Council is still in their initial stages in Lithuania and the (self) education and manifestation of adult believers‘ communal life in believers’ communities are insufficiently disclosed. Its general objective was to analyze the multiple determinations that have influenced the conceptions of extension in Catholic Universities that, since the approval of Federal Law 12.881, on November 12th in 2013, are now part of a specific group in the scope of higher education: Community Institutions of Higher Education - ICES. The following questions guided the investigation: what determines the conceptions of extension of the Catholic Community Universities? In what way has university extension contributed, over time, for the ICES to maintain their differentiated identity before the State? The studies revealed that: i) there is not only a conception of extension in force in Brazilian universities. Such conceptions are forged in the conceptions of a disputed university in society and are, in one way or another, also referred to the forms of understanding that one has of the relation of exteriority between university and society; ii) the ICES have a complex identity, marked by ambiguities insofar as they converge, in addition to the elements that make up their logos and ethos as a social institution and the particularities of the university in Brazil, the fact that they are nonprofit, mostly philanthropic, therefore in interface with the National Policy of Social Assistance. In addition, their recognition by the State as community IES because of their differentiated work, including through extension, have consolidated them as non-state public institutions - a field that is interposed between public IES and private IES in the strict sense; iii) in the case of Catholic ICES, the orientations emanating from the Catholic Church are added to this identity. From the studies carried out, it is understood that the conceptions of the extension of these Universities determine the tensions between elements of Science, Faith, State and, gradually, the Market, and these elements also conform the identity of these institutions. This calls into question the paradoxes, dilemmas and contradictions that historically demarcate it, and also make it a field of dispute for university conceptions and, at the most, society. As a methodological course, documentary analysis was used in a broad sense, mainly through bibliographical research, analysis of dissertations and theses, and the elaboration of an inventory based on information from the worldwide computer network to characterize ICES and, especially, Of Community Catholic Universities in Brazil and in the World. With the purpose of apprehending conceptions of extension in a Catholic community university, aspects of the extension of the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás were taken by reference for analysis.

This reality becomes even more marked with the strenghtening of the multiple changes elapsed from the globalization process, with the fluidization of the political, social, economic and religious borders. It's in these lines of thoughts that this work is inserted, having the purpose of understanding the impacts of the installation of the Catholic Community Canção Nova in this economic and social reality in the city of Cachoeira Paulista - São Paulo, Brazil. Im this way, it's asked: What are the real impacts caused by the implantation of the New Song headquarters in Cachoeira Paulista city? How is this impact made in the city economy or infrastructure? How does the community deal with this impact? What are the solutions to this? To answer these research questions it was adopted a methodology centered in the case study, through a bibliographic review and document analysis, investigated by the models of regional development suggested by Marshall (1920), Myrdal (1968; 1957) and Hischman (1958; 1961), etcetera, just as well by the assumptions of the interaction models man-environment. With this analysis, the hypothesis that the "initial chaos" generated by the installation of the mentioned religious community in the studied city promoted the economic and social development of the locality, was corroborated / A busca pelo desenvolvimento econômico e regional é uma característica marcante de todas as sociedades, atravessando tempos e lugares.
