Les Arméniennes de l'Empire ottoman à l'école de la France (1840-1914) : stratégies missionnaires et mutations d'une société traditionnelle / The Armenians of the Ottoman Empire at the School of France (1840-1915) : missionary strategies and changes from a traditionel society

Coutant, Paulette 16 November 2017 (has links)
Throughout the study of the education of young Armenian girls, this piece of work allows light to be thrown on the cultural and social evolution of one of the minorities of the ottoman Empire, before its disappearance after the genocide of 1915. At the beginning of the 19th century, the American Protestant missionaries were pioneers in guidance of young women at the moment when the Armenian elite showed itself equally concerned about the nation's progress through education. The French Catholic Congregationallsts, present for centuries with the Eastern Christians, are trying to react to this vigorous competition. They made an appeal to nuns from the provinces of France who were capable of adapting themselves to precarious situations. To engage with the families, shape the young girl, a future mother, is to allow the implanting of catholic culture with the French tradition. The chronological framework, from 1840 to 1915, covers the whole period of presence of female missions whose actions were less studied than those of male orders. The research relies on the public archives (diplomatic and national) and above all religious from the relative orders (Ladies of Sion, Franciscaines of Lons-le-Saunier, Oblates of the Assumption, Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition, Sisters of St Joseph of Lyon, Capucines, Brothers of Christian schools, Jesuits at Vanves and in Rome, missionary Pontifical works at Lyon), the most frequently unexploited along with the press and witnesses of the time. Pillars of the French Catholic establishments in rural areas in western Anatolia but also those of large metropolitan areas, very many Armenian women acquired a dual Franco-Armenian culture, becoming in this way the vehicles for the absorption of French knowledge and culture in the establishment, and further into the society of the Ottoman Empire which was coming to the end. Some themes of a more general view are tackled : the strategies of monks and nuns to implant themselves and last in Muslin territory faced with the restrictions of Ottoman power, the blossoming of elite young girls open to modernity. In 1920, a page was turned with the disappearance of missionary schools in Anatolia at the same time as the disappearance of Christians in this place.

Muana Congo, Muana Nzambi Ampungu: poder e catolicismo no reino do Congo pós-restauração (1769-1795) / Muana Congo, Muana Nzambi Ampungu: Power and Catolicism in the Kingdom of Kongo post-restoration (1769-1795)

Thiago Clemêncio Sapede 24 August 2012 (has links)
The objective of this work is to discuss the importance of the Catholicism in 18th century Kingdom of Kongo political system. We avoid dealing with those elements through an idea of cultural imposition or simple incorporation, which would be a mistake when we deal with the complexity of the historical process in Kongo. We focus on the African agency on the historical process, mainly the political elites acting in central or provincial powers. The research analyzes three reports written by catholic missionaries who lived and worked in Kongo in the last four decades of the 18th century. Besides these (more consistent) sources, we analyze a few other documents: mainly letters exchanged by Congolese authorities, missionaries and Portuguese authorities in Luanda and Lisbon. In our historical research we note the central importance of the catholic elements (Africanized and incorporated to the Congolese context) to the functioning of the operating political system of the post-restoration period. Our proposition does not focus on the Catholicism in a context of the missions or the cultural contacts between Europeans and Africans. Beyond that discussion; we choose to look to the Catholic elements as insights to understand the political practices and the solidification of a Congolese political identity. In this context; the catholic rituals, sacraments, specialists and insignia are seen as important tools of re-memorization of the political tradition that connected Catholicism and political power in the Kingdom of Kongo.

L'art des missions catholiques au Japon : XVIe-XVIIe siècles / The art of Catholic missions in Japan : XVIth-XVIIth century

Boscato Morishita, Sylvie 27 September 2016 (has links)
Catholic missions in 16th century Japan developed within the context of lberian expansion in the Far East. The Japanese converts welcomed Western religious art. The present study draws up the list of the main works of art that have escaped destruction since 1614, describes their conservation and progressive discovery since the XIXth century, focuses on the role of the Jesuits in the introduction of Western art in Japan while presenting the artistic traces of the mendicants orders. The main works of art are set in their historical context. The Japanese mission is thus placed in the global networks of lberian expansion, which allowed artistic circulation between Europe, Japan and the New World.

L'administration des biens des Missions catholiques du Cameroun allemand (Kamerun) et du Cameroun français : vers une quête d'autonomie patrimoniale / The administration of German and French Catholic Missions property : on the quest for patrimonial autonomy ?

Noma Bikibili, Paul 12 October 2018 (has links)
This study examines the administration of the property of Catholic Missions in mission territory, from the perspective of the quest for patrimonial autonomy. It evaluates of the gradual implementation of the patrimonial autonomy of the future Churches to succeed the catholic Missions, through the analysis of sources since the erection on 1622 of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide in charge of catholic Missions. Its financing efforts announced insufficient. In the nineteenth century it prescribed an administration of property in connection with the quest for patrimonial autonomy. Such a requirement provided for the institution of a native clergy to find their own resources. It established the practice of sending apostolic vicars to mission territories to initiate the quest for patrimonial autonomy. The twenty-five years of administration of the property by the Pallottines ended in financial autonomy, a difficult challenge for the Spiritans.

Dialogues interreligieux, débats intellectuels et franc-maçonnerie dans la province ottomane de Syrie du milieu du XIXe siècle aux années 1920 / Interreligious dialogues, intellectual debates and Freemasonry in the Ottoman Province of Syria from the mid-nineteenth Century to the 1920s

Chaaya, Saïd 20 May 2015 (has links)
Freemasonry appears to be in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, an essential part of the cultural development of Bilâd al-Shâm. Its members were involved in the intellectual movement revival "Nahda", which itself has been able to take advantage of the new political era of the Ottoman Empire opened by the Tanzimat. Religious conflicts continued to wave a confessional society. The Freemasons led it in the path of progress, modernity and secularism. In the 1st part of the thesis, we present Freemasonry in its concrete reality in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, through two lodges, Palestine and Le Liban, but also in its spiritual dimension. The integration and the Arabization process is emphasized by Freemasonry through the use of the ritual, and in the role that Freemasons played in the constitution of the Syrian Scientific Society in Beirut. A personality of rare diplomacy and knowledge, Emir Muhammad Arslan, Freemason and reformer, is presented as an example of an Arab intellectual. The 2nd part shows the fruitless dialogue between the Freemasons and the Jesuits in Ottoman Syria. The case of the Wandering Jew is an emblematic episode in the struggle for secularism led by Freemasons. Also we present the 1st manuscript written in Arabic in the Ottoman Empire by a Muslim scholar. The thesis uses various published testimonies of contemporaries, but is also based on manuscripts kept in public and private archives. Some of them, which have never been used so far, such as the oldest Masonic ritual in Arabic, provide a new light on the beginning of Freemasonry in Beirut and on its impact in the history of Ottoman Syria. The research concludes how Freemasonry at the heart of debates, was able to propose a new model of society that seems more meta-religious than non-religious or anti-religious. This is the new society, in which every human being is able to yearn for freedom and aspire to progress and modernity.
