Can Problematic Cellphone Usage Be Considered Addictive Behavior?

This paper aims to explore and discuss the points found in published research articles addressing cellphone usage and addiction. The articles vary in their emphasis, methods, and conclusions, but all focus in one way or another on how the advent of cellphone usage has caused addiction in many cellphone and smartphone users. Many of these studies involve looking at college students and teenagers to see how addiction and cellphone usage has affected younger generations. The articles at hand include studies from many different parts of the world. Some of the studies focus on which smartphone activities are the most addictive, while some of the articles focus on addiction as a whole and its impact on the users. Many of the works done on this subject focus on how addiction to these devices compares to a traditional substance abuse. While cellphones and smartphones have had many positive impacts, these improvements do not come without psychosocial hazards and addiction potential. Society places a premium on the ability to better communicate and utilize cellphone technology, but do they truly know what costs these benefits come with?

Factors Affecting People¡¦s Willingness to Use Mobile Barcode E-Invoice

Mobile barcode e-invoicing (MBEI) is a novel system that not only reduces companies¡¦ cost on invoice delivery and storage but also enables the government to save money on printing the invoices. Although this is an important policy, no study has examined it from the general public¡¦s perspective. Therefore, this study surveyed a convenience sample of 250 people to investigate factors that may affect the public¡¦s willingness to use MBEI. Based on Rogers¡¦s (1995) diffusion of innovation theory, this study explored the impacts of relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, observability, and habits of using relevant technology on willingness to use MBEI. The results suggest that while relative advantage, compatibility, and complexity are associated with people¡¦s willingness, observability is not. As for the habits of using relevant technology, people with i-bon experience were more willing to use MBEI than those who had never heard about i-bon. But respondents¡¦ usage of membership cards for shopping, the carrying of these membership cards, and the habit of using touch-control mobile devices had no impact on their willingness to adopt MBEI. These results suggest that the government should not only promote its e-invoicing policy more aggressively, but also be alert to the problems that different age groups may encountered when trying to use MBEI.

M-Commerce : Standard Bank's cellphone banking adoption by customers.

Mobile commerce is a product of the convergence of the two fastest growing technologies of the modern era: cellular phones and the Internet (Attwood and Duncan, 2000). It delivers electronic commerce capabilities into a consumer's hand via wireless technology, that is an ability to perform a transaction using a mobile device (cell phone, laptop, PDA), such as the cellphone banking service. The cellphone banking service allows banking customers to perform banking transactions directly on their cellphone, using either WAP or WIG technology. Four big banks in South Africa provide the cell phone banking offering to customers. Nedcor first launch the cell phone banking service and other banks followed. Standard Bank launched the service in 2001 and thus far only 28 000 customers have registered for the cell phone banking service. The level of service adoption is very low, considering that there are 15million cellphone subscribers in South Africa. Banks projected that the take-up would be much higher than it currently is. For the purpose of this research study, the Standard Bank's cell phone banking offering will be evaluated. The problem area is that while Standard Bank launched the cellphone banking service in 2001, the consumer take up has been far lower than expected. Thus far, only 28 000 customers have registered for the service. No analysis has been conducted at Standard Bank to understand the reasons behind the slow rate of adoption by customers. The objectives of the study are to: o identify the factors that contribute to the non-adoption of the cell phone banking service by customers o identify factors that can increase the rate of service adoption and therefore assist the banks in promoting the service to critical mass o Establish the future of m-commerce in the banking industry. - v - A literature review has been conducted, where studies conducted internationally in mobile banking space have been discussed. These are studies conducted in Europe and the United States. The cell phone banking adoption framework model has also been derived. In terms of the research methodology, qualitative and quantitative research methods were both employed to gather the required data. For the qualitative methodology, interviews were conducted with the Standard Bank management team and a questionnaire was administered. For the quantitative methodology a questionnaire was designed and was used to gather the information from Standard Bank customers. The research results reveal that cellphone banking has not been widely adopted, despite the rapid diffusion of cell phones in South Africa and the popularity of cell phone functionality such as SMS. Factors likely to influence adoption include trialability, relative advantage, and the customer need for banking services from a cellphone and lower perceptions of technology risk. / Thesis (MBA)-University of Kwazulu-Natal, 2004.

Generic framework for development of location-aware applications

<p>Today, several tourist attractions use handheld devices that act as tour guides to give the customers an improved experience and better knowledge of the attraction. A graphical user interface on the devices provides the users with information through sound, pictures and video. In order to improve the information delivered to the users, some of these guides are location-aware. However, location-aware tour guides are expensive to develop. They have to be developed tailored for each attraction, which is a time consuming job.</p><p>By having a framework for the development of location-aware tour guides, the tour guides will be both easier and less expensive to develop. In addition, it will be easy to make changes to the guides if necessary.</p><p>This project resulted in the development of a prototype for a framework for location-aware tour guides. The framework consists of three main tools; a Creator Tool, a Statistical Tool and a Runtime System. The Creator Tool is used to create and configure new tour guides. The Statistical Tool is used by the staff of the attraction. It generates statistics based on information stored in a log. The Runtime System is the system that provides the mobile devices information, adjusted to their location during a guided tour. To demonstrate the use of the framework, we have developed two client applications, one for PDAs and the other for cellphones. Both applications are electronically location-aware tour guides made for the Nidaros Cathedral.</p><p>The cellphone application is an innovative application that may result in a tremendous evolvement in the development of cellphone applications. It shows great potentials in the area of location-aware cellphone applications with high accuracy, and can be used not only in tour attractions, but also in several other fields. Thus, the project has gained a great deal of publicity, both from newspapers and television.</p>

In Sweden there is a long ongoing discussion about computer and cellphone usage during lectures in school. The discussion has mainly covered elementary school up to college students, but this topic is at least as relevant for university students. Today cellphones are so advanced; you can do everything with one that you previously only could do with a computer, the difference is that everyone is carrying one with them all the time. This study shows how concentration during lectures is affected by the cellphone accessibility and usage. With this study we want to find out how university students perceive cellphone usage affects their own concentration during lectures. Our goal with this paper is to enlighten both teachers and students about cellphone usage, and give them suggestions on how lectures possibly can be improved. The research question in this study is: In what way do university students believe their cellphone usage affects their concentration capabilities during lectures? The data we have collected is compiled from three surveys from three different universities in Stockholm. We have also interviewed students in a group interview and one individual interview. The results show that the students are affected negatively to some degree by their cellphone usage during lectures. But the level of concentration is also affected by the subject of the lecture, level of difficulty and the teacher’s way of lecturing.

The impact of the language of the cellphone on the development of Northern Sotho

Thesis (M. A. (African Languages)) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / The study focuses on the impact of the language of the cellphone on the development of Northern Sotho. The study argues that Northern Sotho lexicographers do not pay adequate attention to the cellphone language. This is why there are hardly any dictionaries that treat the cellphone language. The study shows that language of the cellphone should be treated like any other language. The study discovered that language of the cellphone assists in the development of African languages. In turn, this helps the cellphone users to close the gap between Northern Sotho and technological terms. Lastly, the study recommends that language of the cellphone should not be ignored as technology is developing every minute.

Cellphone banking adoption and its impact on the transactional behaviour of low income consumers

This aim of this study was to establish if individual characteristics have an impact on the adoption of cellphone banking amongst low-income (Mzansi) consumers. The second component of the study then set out to assess the impact that cellphone banking adoption has on the financial behaviour of these consumers. This data was obtained using the data mining technique. Data from one of the local banks was extracted and analysed. In addition to using descriptive statistics, the ANOVA was used. The ANOVA is an inferential statistical method. It establishes whether there is a relationship with the defined variable and the adoption of cellphone banking. Race, age, income, gender, number of bank products and channel of registration where the variables that were analysed. With the exception of age, no other variable had an impact on adoption for both Mzansi customers as well as the entire base. The subsequent post adoption behaviour analysis that was conducted identified some key behaviour changes. Consumers who adopted cellphone banking significantly increased (>300%) their demand of prepaid products. Secondly, the demand for cash amongst adopters was lower than the demand from non-adopters which could signal a shift towards cashless solutions. And finally, the cellphone banking adopters were found to perform more transactions prior to adoption when compared to non adopters thereby demonstrating a higher need for a mobile banking solution. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vad elever och lärare anser om att använda mobiltelefonen som hjälpmedel i skolan. Fungerar den bra som hjälpmedel eller väger nackdelar som konflikter med elever angående användningen och risken för kränkningar över till dess nackdel? Undersökningen genomfördes med enkäter samt uppföljande intervjuer med lärare och elever. Då liknande undersökningar tidigare har utförts bland äldre elever valde jag att göra undersökningen bland lärare och elever i mellanstadiet. Undersökningen visar att både elever och lärare är positiva till att mobiltelefonen används i skolan då den är lättillgänglig och snabb att använda. Nackdelar som kommit fram i undersökningen är att en del elever kan känna sig otrygga då de är oroliga för att filmas eller fotograferas mot sin vilja varpå detta material kan distribueras på internet. Några upplever också mobiltelefoner som störande på lektioner. Trots detta visar dock min undersökning att fördelarna överväger nackdelarna då man genom att tillåta mobiltelefoner i skolsammanhang också öppnar möjligheter att sätta upp regler för användandet av de samma. Större möjligheter att arbeta med förebyggande av mobbning och kränkningar är en annan konsekvens av att tillåta mobiltelefon i skolan. / The intention with this study is to analyse students ' and teachers ' opinions about the use of cellphones as a tool in the school. Do they work as a tools or do the conflicts regarding use and the risk of harassment means too big disadvantages? The study was carried out with surveys and additional interviews with teachers and students. Since similar studies have already been done on elder students, I chose to do this study on teachers and students in primary school. The study shows that both students and teachers are positive regarding the use of cellphones in school, since it is an accessible and quick-to-use tool. But there are disadvantages, such as some students fearing that they will be filmed or photographed against their will, and that this material may be distributed on the Internet. Some students also find the use of cellphones disturbing during lessons. Despite this, my study shows that the advantages outweighs the disadvantages, since when allowing cellphones in the school, you also open up for the possibility of setting rules for their use. Greater possibilities to prevent bullying and harassments is another consequence of allowing cellphones in the school.
