Implicit leadership theories, leader-member exchange and its workplace outcomes: a case of South African call centre agents

Jansen, Althea January 2015 (has links)
Thesis M.Com. (Human Resources Management))--University of the Witwatersrand, School of Economic and Business Sciences, 2014. / The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of implicit leadership theories (ILTs) in leader-member exchanges (LMX) and the association of these leadership variables on employee outcomes, customer service orientation and turnover intentions. The specific context for this study is call centres. The growth in the call centre industry has warranted an investigation into variables that lead to their success. With an increased focus on retaining satisfied customers, the need to understand the factors that lead to this is emphasised. The importance of leadership and its impact on the success of organisations is often accentuated in the literature This research aimed to gain a better understanding of the variables which affect the success of call centres from a leadership perspective. The effect of leadership and specifically leader- member exchange - on employee and organisational outcomes is studied. These outcomes include job satisfaction, commitment, psychological empowerment, turnover intentions and customer orientation. The effect of implicit leadership theories (ILTs) on LMX was also assessed. This research was conducted in the South African call centre context. The target population was defined as call centre agents in the Gauteng region. 192 call centre agents from various call centres formed part of the sample. Data was gathered using self-report questionnaires. The questionnaire was administered in two parts and once all the data was collected, the relationships were tested using structural equation modelling in the SAS 9.3 statistical program. Various other tests were conducted, including tests for reliability and validity. Cronbach alphas were calculated in order to confirm the reliability of the variables. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted in order to confirm validity. Furthermore, correlation analysis iv and path analysis was conducted to ascertain the significance of the relationships identified. LMX and psychological empowerment were found to be central in this research, having the greatest impact on the outcome variables studied; turnover intentions and customer orientation. Important recommendations for further research include the assessment of a more balance mix of in-bound and out-bound call centres since differences may exist and this research was predominantly comprised of in-bound call centres. With one of the most significant paths identified being psychological empowerment to employee customer orientation, the findings suggest that call centre managers may need to consider the long term effects of psychological empowerment on employee customer orientation and turnover intentions. The cost involved with employees leaving the organisation or losing dissatisfied customers may warrant an initiative to empower call centre agents. The use of self-managed teams may be one way to achieve this. Leaders were also found to play a central role in the outcomes studied in this research. In this regard, leaders should also go on extensive training programmes on how to deal with individual employees and on establishing good relationships with them. Managers could get peer reviews of leaders to understand where and if any problems exist. The use of team building exercises may also assist in developing good, high quality LMX relationships.

Urban Active Junction: connecting neighbourhoods with an NMT fitness centre

Downes, Brandon 30 October 2015 (has links)
This document is submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree: Master of Architecture [Professional] at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, in the year 2015. / This Thesis, Urban Active Junction: Connecting neighbourhoods with a NTM fitness centre, is about movement and physical exercise in an urban environment. In-between spaces are often underutilised, creating an opportunity for to connect and integrate adjacent spaces. With the help of human activity these space can become public environment with a social atmosphere, which can be enhanced through design details. I then introduce non-motorised transport and the significant need for an alternative mode of transport, due to increasing congestion in the city. This is done through an analysis cycling and what is required to develop cycling as an alternative mode of transport. The relationship between body and building, illustrate their intertwined and inseparable nature. Despite the wide range of movement that the body is capable of, architecture has the ability to enhance a user’s experience of a space by stimulating a sensory response to the building, while also manipulating the body into particular movement patterns. The programme of the building creates a dialogue between different the public space and the building. A with a non-motorised transport interchange and a gymnasium making up the bulk of the programme, serving to integrate the contrasting communities of Bellevue and Yeoville with Houghton. The site is located on the corner of Louis Botha Avenue and Cavendish Street on the border Bellevue, Yeoville and Houghton. Through a thorough urban analysis and site analysis the site is understood in greater detail, with precedent studies serving to give relevance to certain design decisions. The design of the building opens to the urban context on the ground floor, with movement routes informing positioning and functionality of space / GR 2017

Prescribing Patterns of Health Care Givers to Patients Attending a Health Center in an Informal Urban Settlement in Gauteng for the Period March 2003 to June 2003

Shingwenyana, Ntiyiso 01 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 8910202A - MPH research report - School of Public Health - Faculty of Health Sciences / An increasing number of people are migrating to South African urban centers (GJMC, 2000). There are various reasons that can be attributed to this migration; including the hope of finding employment and better living conditions. Recent urban migrants find themselves faced with the basic problem of lack of shelter and, depending on the migrant’s situation, they may choose to live in indoor shacks within the city center, backyard shacks in the black townships or join the growing number of informal settlement dwellers (GJMC, 2000). The number of informal settlements continues to grow at an alarming rate in Johannesburg (CEROI, 2000). This poses unique health care challenges as well as presenting the health care system with unusual disease conditions associated with general lack of infrastructure and services (CEROI, 2000). It has been established that the proportion of HIV infected patients is higher in people living in informal settlements when compared to people living in private houses (SAHR, 2000). Thus, it is expected that more people will be presenting with HIV and AIDS related illnesses in an informal settlement health center as compared to well-developed residential areas. This study aimed at exploring the prescribing patterns of health care givers for patients attending a health center in an informal settlement as well as to determine the major disease patterns prevalent in the area. The study was carried out in Davidsonville and OR Tambo clinics as well as Bophelong and Hikhensile clinics in Ivory Park. The study covered regions five, one and two respectively according to Gauteng metropolitan services area classification (GJMC, 2000). The findings of the study will help the appropriate policy makers improve the Essential Drug List and inform public health officials in formulating strategies that may lead to health status improvement for people living in informal settlements.

Perceptions about the effectiveness of programme monitoring and evaluation rendered to Development Centres by the Department of Social Development in the Gauteng North Region.

Henna, Thembinkosi Elliot 21 July 2014 (has links)
Eradicating poverty is one of the biggest challenges in South Africa. A Development Centre Model was developed by the Department of Social Development as a strategy to empower citizens of South Africa to become independent and self-reliant in an attempt to alleviate poverty. The Department fulfils the role of programme monitoring and evaluation of different programmes offered by the Development Centres. A Social Development Approach was used as a guide to the theoretical framework of the study. The primary aim of the study was to explore the perceptions about the effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation of incomegenerating projects rendered to the development centres by the Department of Social Development in the Gauteng North Region. A qualitative research strategy was followed and a multiple case study design was applied. Purposive sampling was used to initially select six beneficiaries, six centre managers, two service providers and two departmental officials involved in the development centres that are government-funded. However, the total number of the participants in the end came to thirteen; five beneficiaries; five centre managers; two evaluators and one departmental official. Data was collected via face-to-face interviews with participants and the interviews were tape recorded. To analyse data, thematic content analysis was applied. Some of the findings and the recommendations are, firstly, that the study contributes to the understanding of the effectiveness of programme monitoring and evaluation; secondly, that programme monitoring and evaluation is in fact effective; and thirdly, that beneficiaries should participate in monitoring and evaluation of their projects. Fourthly, the majority of the beneficiaries and the centre managers felt that the process has no impact on the actual programme or projects. These participants felt that there is no follow-up to solve problems that have been identified during this process of monitoring and evaluation. The participants recommended that the department do more visits thereby making sure that problems identified during monitoring and evaluation are immediately resolved through constant visits to the development centres.

Engineering of NV color centers in diamond for their applications in quantum information and magnetometry / Ingénierie de centres colorés NV du diamant pour l’information quantique et magnétométrie

Lesik, Margarita 03 March 2015 (has links)
The Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color center is a defect of diamond which behaves as an artificial atom hosted in a solid-state matrix. Due to its electron spin properties which can be read-out and manipulated as an elementary quantum system, the NV center has found a wide panel of applications as a qubit for quantum information and as a magnetic field sensor. However these applications require to control the properties of the NV centers and their localization. This doctoral thesis investigates methods allowing us to tailor the properties of NV centers by combining techniques for the implantation of nitrogen atoms and the plasma-assisted (CVD) synthesis of diamond. The manuscript is divided into six chapters. The first chapter summarizes the properties of the NV center which will set our objectives for the NV engineering. The second chapter will describe how arrays of NV centers can be created using Focused Ion Beam implantation. The results open a wide range of applications for the targeted creation of NV centers in diamond structures such as photonic crystals and tips. However the low kinetic energy which is required for achieving implantation within a spot of 10-nm diameter leads to shallow defects which properties are strongly affected by the sample surface. The third chapter investigates how the overgrowth of a diamond layer over implanted NV centers can remove the detrimental influence of the surface. The fourth and fifth chapters describe effective methods for NV center fabrication through the control of the CVD growth conditions of the hosting crystal. Thin layers with high NV doping can be grown and almost perfect control of the orientation of the NV axis can be achieved. With the goal to optimize the spin coherence properties, the sixth chapter investigates how the electron spin of the NV center can be protected from decoherence effects induced by magnetic noise due to the unpolarized spins in the diamond lattice.

O espaço livre público e a visão cotidiana da paisagem: o caso do centro histórico de Laranjeiras-SE / The public open space and the landscape quotidian vision: the case of the historical centre of Laranjeiras-SE

Lícia Cotrim Carneiro Leão 03 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the role of public open spaces in Laranjeiras, city of historical interest, as an attempt to contribute to the revaluation process of its urban landscape. This research understands that the dweller\'s individual perception of its environment is very important to understanding of these environmental values. By identifying the elements and most significant environmental aspects from the view of who experience the place and the expression of its values, is one of the important steps to orientate actions in a given environment based in its local population values. Intending to understand and appreciate the relations between the Laranjeira\'s dwellers and its landscape, first of all, we\'ve search for its history, since the formation process of its colonial core until today. Then, the focus turns to the research of landscape elements and public open spaces - the most significant aspects according to the historian\'s and landscape architect\'s specialized point of view. Then, was reavealed the necessity of verifying this specialized look and the views of ordinary people who experience Laranjeiras quotidian, outlining, finally, a set of elements that justify the allocation of value to the landscape of the city and constitute its possible landscape identity.

Learning Resource Centre (LRC) : en bibliotekstrend? / Learning Resource Centre (LRC) : a library trend?

Sundberg, Linda January 2008 (has links)
Learning Resource Centre, or LRC, is an international phenomenon and a response to the changing society that came with the development of information technology. The LRC concept spread internationally during the 1990s and began to influence Swedish collage libraries at the end of the decade. The main purpose of this study is to analyze if and how Swedish college libraries have incorporated the LRC concept. Is there a Swedish LRC model? Is the LRC concept still interesting or was it a trend that is now out of date? Interviews with eleven people from six college libraries aim to show how they define the concept LRC and how it has been integrated in to their organisations. In order to explain how these six collage libraries have related to and developed their own LRC concept an organisational theory with a mythical perspective has been used. This perspective is related to an institutional perspective and is presented by the Norwegian professors Tom Christensen, Per Lægreid, Paul G. Roness and Kjell Arne Røvik in Organisationsteori i offentlig sektor. This study concludes that there is no Swedish model, however there are some undeniably Swedish characteristics. The concept LRC is never or seldom used and the activities connected to LRC have become ordinary activities at college libraries. The substance of the LRC remains and has improved the chances for use of and collaboration within the organisation. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Maturation de sites métalliques de protéines par les protéines à radical S-Adénosyl-L-méthionine et la machinerie de fabrication des centres fer-soufre / Maturation of protein active sites containing metals by the radical S-Adenosyl-L-methionine proteins and the iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery.

Marinoni, Elodie 09 December 2011 (has links)
FeS clusters are widely used protein cofactors, found both in bacteria and eukaryotes. They play key roles such as electron transfer, substrate binding and activation, regulation of gene expression, sulfur donor etc. They are really various, ranging from the [2Fe-2S] cluster to the more complex MoFe7S9X (X = C, N or O) agregate of nitrogenase. Clusters assembly is carried out by protein machineries. We studied the ISC (Iron-Sulfur Cluster) in bacteria, who assembles [2Fe-2S] and [4Fe-4S] clusters. It is composed of IscS, IscU, IscA, HscA, HscB proteins and a ferredoxin. Two of these proteins: the cysteine desulfurase IscS, and the scaffold protein IscU, represent the core of the machinery as IscS provides sulfur protein on IscU, which, with iron obtained from another protein (not clearly identified to date), assemble the iron-sulfur center. The latter transfers it to an apoprotein. We isolated under anaerobic conditions a stable (IscS-D35A-IscU)2 complex containing a [2Fe-2S] cluster. Different forms of the complex were obtained and their structures were solved by molecular replacement. These structures allowed us to propose a mechanism for the assembly of the [2Fe-2S] clusters at the atomic and electronic levels. We have also studied the HmdB protein, which is proposed to maturate the [Fe]-hydrogenase. HmdB is a member of the radical SAM proteins superfamily. Crystals of the apoprotein were obtained and its structure was solved by molecular replacement. Although part of the structure is not visible due to the absence of the [4Fe-4S] cluster, this structure gives a first view of the active site of the protein.

The Swedish Model of Detention : A case study of Åstorp Detention Centre / The Swedish Model of Detention : A case study of Åstorp Detention Centre

Elin, Örtman January 2019 (has links)
Detention centres are a rather new phenomena in the Swedish institutional setup. However, due to the migration inflow of 2015 it is now rapidly expanding all over Sweden. So far, it has been only scarcely monitored and researched and mostly with a focus on the perspective of the detainee’s health or the employee’s experiences at the detention centres. Little is known about the role of the NGOs and how they collaborate with the Migration Agency to secure the rights for those who are detained. This study is a qualitative case study on one of the five detention centres in Sweden, namely Åstorp detention centre which is located in Skåne 20km from Helsingborg. Four interviews have been made with the Migration Agency and with the NGOs that are continuously visiting the detainees in Åstorp. By using data triangulation, the validity of the study has increased and principles from the rights-based approach have been used to highlight important aspects of the collaboration. One significant finding in this research is that the Migration Agency is willingly increasing the transparency by inviting an unlimited number of NGOs to monitor and secure the rights for the detainees, which in turn has led to Sweden's detention centres being referred to as a successful model for the rest of the world. This study has also showed a successful and mutual collaboration between the Migration Agency and the NGOs and even if their roles at the detention centres are different, all participants are working towards a common goal, to improve the conditions for those who are detained. Notwithstanding the relatively limited sample by including one out of five detention centres, this study contributes also, in a small way, to new insights of the situation in Sweden's detention centres and the importance of a successful collaboration between the Migration Agency and NGOs for the detainee’s rights.
