Having the images as a source of study allows some considerations on the practices and representations that human beings build from their perceptions and conceptions of the world and arts about the most diverse events in time and space. To understand the accident, we analyzed the historical process of atomic energy development and its implication in the nuclear technology industry in Brazil, the social behavior in the face of tragedies and disasters, and in the face of the relationship between arts, the artist and the society. In the construction of our interpretation of selected images that make up the Cesium 137 Series and its relation with the historical context of Goiás, we see the artist as a social subject that shows, in his works, his views of the world. We also consider the role of the producer of such symbolic assets as the main actor of his time and society, as well as his works, aesthetics and languages he employs, which allow us the contact with historical events, by seeing in arts a possibility of social engagement, beyond simple observation. Therefore, we discuss the use of works of art in the classroom, starting with its historical and social contextualization and a set of problems for the construction of historical knowledge. Artistic images, such as social, cultural and aesthetic constructs, human signs and vestiges in time, are historical documents and sources of endless possibilities of interpretation; they are narratives and places that hold memories of different human practices, of their insertion in time and space of the relations that are developed in and with them, and of the sensations and emotions that they produce and experience, like those related to the Cesium 137 Series, of which we selected some screens in an attempt to address the historical accident, based on the representations of space and its constituent elements and of the human figures that flow in such representations, with their traces and marks. / Esta dissertação, inserida no âmbito da História Cultural, objetiva atingir, em uma perspectiva interdisciplinar entre Arte e História, a compreensão histórica acerca do acidente, ou melhor, do desastre radioativo ocorrido em Goiânia, em 1987, por meio das representações imagéticas da Série Césio 137, de Siron Franco. Ter as imagens como fonte de pesquisa oportuniza refletir a respeito das representações e práticas que os seres humanos constroem a partir de suas percepções e concepções de mundo e de arte sobre os mais diversos acontecimentos no tempo e no espaço. Para compreender o acidente buscamos tratar do processo histórico de desenvolvimento da energia atômica e de sua implicação na indústria de tecnologia nuclear no Brasil; analisar o comportamento social diante das tragédias e desastres, assim como diante da relação entre a Arte, o Artista e a Sociedade. Na construção de nossa leitura e interpretação das imagens escolhidas que compõem a Serie Césio 137 e sua relação com o contexto histórico goiano, lançamos olhar para o artista como sujeito social que manifesta em suas produções posicionamentos ante o mundo. Atentamo-nos para a função do produtor de tais bens simbólicos como sujeito protagonista de seu tempo e sociedade, assim como para suas obras, sua estética e as linguagens que emprega, as quais nos permitem dialogar com os acontecimentos históricos, ao vislumbrar na Arte a possibilidade do engajamento social, para além de uma simples contemplação. Objetivamos, assim, refletir sobre o uso de obras de arte em sala de aula, partindo de sua contextualização histórica e social e de um conjunto de problemáticas, para a construção do conhecimento histórico. As imagens artísticas, como constructos sociais, culturais e estéticos, sinais e vestígios humanos no tempo, são documentos históricos e fontes de inesgotáveis possibilidades de interpretação; são narrativas e lugares que abrigam memórias das diversas práticas humanas, de sua inserção num tempo e espaço das relações que neles e com eles desenvolvem e das sensações e emoções que produzem e experimentam como aquelas relativas à Série Césio 137, da qual selecionamos algumas telas na busca de abordar o referido acontecimento a partir das representações do espaço e seus elementos constitutivos e das figuras humanas que nele circulam, com seus traços e marcas.
