The influence of conference championship games on competitive balance in college football

Sullivan, Elisha R. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Economics / Yang M. Chang / College football thrives on the ideas that each school has what it takes to be the best, rivalries are of major importance, and either team can win the game. Competitive balance is what keeps these thoughts alive, offering the last team in the conference the chance to beat their top-ranked opponent, or the mediocre middle-rank team the chance to win a post-season bowl game. Competitive balance provides the level of uncertainty of game outcome that keeps fans coming back every season. Previous research has examined many variables that have an effect on competitive balance. The purpose of this report is to step forward from where previous studies left off and examine the effect of the conference championship game on competitive balance. Five of the eleven NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conferences currently determine their conference champion by holding a championship game at the end of the season. Recent conference realignments bring about the possibility for two more conferences to establish championship games. Does hosting a conference championship game improve competitive balance within the league? This study examined several measures of competitive balance, including standard deviation measures, the competitive balance ratio, and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. Results suggest a slightly higher level of competitive balance for conferences hosting championship games versus those that do not. However, these results are not statistically significant, and this higher level of competitive balance could be explained by the larger membership of conferences hosting championship games.

Klonova, Anastasiia January 2012 (has links)
Successful presentation of a country as a brand and positioning its unique image on the global level can give significant opportunities for development and progress of the state in the different areas. This research applies theories on the country branding to estimate impact of mega sport events on the image of state. To accomplish these goal I used case study – formation of brand Ukraine before hosting European Football Championship 2012 (EURO 2012). To investigate  brand strategy of Ukraine and analyze implemented projects I conducted in-depth interviews with government officials and independent experts, who are involved in promo campaigns of Ukraine. The research concluded that Ukraine is in the process of  brand formation, but it is too early to to assume the existance of the comprehensive brand of the country. For Ukraine, EURO 2012 impulses change of negative perceptions of the country and  is a step towards complex strategy of brand creation. Future of this strategy therefore depends on conducting preliminary studies of each promo project and coordinated collaboration between all actors who take part in creation of brand Ukraine. Research also provides recommendations on how to make brand campaign more efficient.

Keclíková, Kateřina January 2013 (has links)
Titel: The relationship of chosen factors between the game performance and the length of an active action of women handball players Objectives: We have determined two purposes. The first goal was to detect the composition of players according to the career's lenght during the period 2000-2010, then we were interested in composition of players in teams which had regularly participated on every championships during the same period. The second one was to find out the influence of the cereer's lenght of regularly participating teams on chosen coefficinets of game performance. Methods: We used quantitative colection/summary which can be found on websides of each championship as a source. The lenght of career is defined by the repetitive number of starts. We used the corelation method to determine the influence of career's lenght on the chosen coefficinets of game performance. All the informations are prepared in Microsoft Excel and the results are transfered into graphs and numbers. Results: In our project we found out that women players are participating most often on 1 or 2 championships. The career's leght has only tiny influence on two coefficients of game performance. Specifically it was the number of catched balls and also the number of dropped balls. We found out little differences by analysing...
