Dysfunction as a function of authority : understanding the power and performance of international non-governmental organizations

Kleinman, Sarah Beth January 2013 (has links)
In this work, I present a conceptual framework for understanding how international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) become powerful international organizations (IOs), and how their pursuit of legitimacy leads to the formation of specific kinds of organizational cultural proclivities and dysfunctional tendencies that shape how these groups behave as international actors. Despite their increasing prominence in international affairs, INGOs remain largely understudied by International Relations (IR) scholars; my work provides a theoretically driven and empirically supported analysis of the power and performance of these actors, thus filling the existing gap in the IR literature. Relying on the basic tenets of sociological institutionalism, I argue that there is an indissoluble relationship between the ways in which an INGO becomes powerful and its ultimate performance outcomes.

PUC Campinas / This paper seeks for understanding how the Igreja Mundial do Poder de Deus (IMPD) differs from other post-pentecostal churches because of the extreme charismatic appeal of its leader-founder, Apostle Valdemiro Santiago, for the control of members-voters. It has understood, therefore, that this relationship of power is characterized, among other types of pure Weberian domination, by a preponderance of the ideal type of charismatic domination. In this way, the association of politics with religion (neofundamentalism) is the real motive reason behind such domination. In another words, the substantiation of the Christian faith values offers legitimacy of the use of charismatic domination in order to create political projects that collaborate with the notion of creating a Christian society (building the Kingdom of God in Brazil). Regarding the methodology of the research, we used the categories and the concept of comprehensive sociology of Max Weber, with the overall goal of understanding the ideal types of domination and the specificity of charismatic domination linked to the case of IMPD, and also with the intention of to make clear the reasons of IMPD entrance in politics and its main political and social projects by the actions of church representatives, here called ?IMPD Christ politicians?.

The objective in this work is to understand the action of the sacred in any miracle purpose, our goal is to analyze the concepts of miracle cure in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal presented by the faithful, from their narratives about how they its impacts on personal and social life of those who took part in the experience of the miraculous phenomena, that is, cancer cure. Charismatic Renewal, thus enabling an environment conducive to the pursuit of religious offering (occurrence of miracles) to the sacred, from feelings as belief and supernatural faith, but without leaving the conventional treatment. Reestablishing them physical, psychic and emotionally, giving them a purpose (nomia) to their existence. It will be developed through a field research, supported in the sociological discussion of religion that will enable us to identify each Catholic Charismatic Renewal, beyond the therapeutic function, element as convener (because of its paradoxical character), between Religion and Medicine, faith and science. In particular, it will be focused through this labor, to analyze and present the experience of the miracle with a group of 7 (seven) women Brazil. For this current analysis, it will be used, in our fieldwork, two investigative methods: participant observation and implementation of two research questionnaires (self-applicable). Therefore we realize that religion, mainly the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is a way to provide its followers to try religion or it may lead to the meeting cancer. In Catholic Charismatic Renewal, the miracle cure comes as a converging space between Religion and Medicine because these two realities in modern ages are prone to reconnect towards the solution of modern problems. This encounter provides changes in the psychological and social behavior, because they correspond, respectively, a change in the order of the conscious and unconscious and, hence a behavioral intrapersonal and interpersonal change. Investigação sobre a sociologia da dominação carismática e da cotidianização do carisma no mormonismo (1820-1847)" / Line upon line: Investigation on the sociology of charismatic domination and routinization of charisma in Mormonism. (1820-1847)

Neves, André Ruz 10 March 2006 (has links)
The research has aimed to accomplish a social-historical investigation of the process of routinization of charisma in Mormonism, seeking to perceive the change of the religious-prophetic charisma, and thus gathering elements which can enable to consolidate, considering a particular case, a more general theory of the occurrence of such social processes. The investigation sought to find, in the struggle for power and chances of prestige, the leading thread with which the process of change of a religious charismatic movement has developed, from highly emotional-pneumatic religiosity to a disenchanted, hierarchical and institutionalized religion. In order to achieve that, thorough documentation and historical interpretation has been applied, this way allowing a more detailed observation of the social phenomena investigated. The primarily theoretical instrument used in the research has been Max Weber theory of the charismatic domination, the theorization of the processes of charisma change and sociology of religion. The other essential theoretical reference can be found in the German sociologist Norbert Elias, including his concepts of psychogenesis and sociogenesis, figuration, monopolization process, balance of tension among others, which allow a privileged access to the long-term process which conformed and solidified the genuine charisma of the founder-prophet Joseph Smith in a ritualized religion and a hierarchic institution.

Communication Satisfaction of Charismatic Leaders in Virtual Teams

Chachere, Felicia Latrice 01 January 2015 (has links)
Over the last 2 decades of advances in technology, organizations have used virtual teams (VTs) as one way to expand globally. Strong leadership and communication skills with followers are essential qualities for successful VTs. It is important to conduct research related to charismatic leadership and communication satisfaction of team members as many organizations now use VTs. The purpose of the survey study was to examine the relationship of perceived charismatic leadership qualities in VT leaders and communication satisfaction in VT members. The research questions examined the association between charismatic leadership qualities and the subdimension of communication satisfaction. Charismatic leadership was the theoretical framework for the study, which posits that leadership and communication are contributing factors to successful VTs. Data were collected from property managers of a major student housing management company (n = 111) using convenience sampling. The Conger-Kanungo Charismatic Leadership Questionnaire and Communication Satisfaction Survey were e-mailed to the property managers through Survey Monkey. Multiple regression analysis showed that a number of charismatic leadership qualities were statistically associated with communication satisfaction. Inspiring strategic and organizational goals explained the most variance in conflict resolution (p < 0.001). The results may contribute to the body of knowledge on VTs, as the results suggest that a leadership-focused approach can transform VTs into highly communicative teams. Implications for positive social change are that management awareness of charismatic leadership qualities can have a positive effect on the enhancement of communication satisfaction and employee productivity.

Charismatic Leadership Perceptions from K-12 Administrators: Phenomena of Follower and Leader Interdependency

Martinez, Lucinda G 20 December 2017 (has links)
A greater understanding of the nature of leadership can be gained by empirical analyses, such as this quantitative study, addressing the influence executive administrators have on their message recipients, their followers. This study sampled 64 non-teaching K-12 school, district, and state administrators and measured their perceptions of their immediate supervisors’ leadership behaviors by completing the ©Conger-Kanungo Charismatic Leadership Scale (Conger, Kanungo, Menon, & Mathur, 1997) and the ©Perceived Leadership Behavior Measures Inventory (Conger, Kanungo, & Menon, 2000). Analyses of variables measuring perceived leadership behaviors and those effects on the attitudes and perceptions of their followers may contribute to a better understanding of the phenomena of non-teaching administrator follower and leader interdependency in K-12 organizations. Leaders can develop more refined leadership skill characteristics that might enhance ones’ abilities in communicating exemplary characteristics and charismatic behaviors. In turn, these refined abilities can contribute to an organization’s effectiveness by lowering leader and teacher attrition, promoting team building and bonding, and contribute to K-12 administrative leadership development program effectiveness. A General Linear Model with multivariate tests analyses were used to examine correlations between the charismatic leadership behavioral components and the followers’ perceptions of their own motivation, trust, and satisfaction. A significant correlation existed (p =p =

Selecting a new leader : Identifying and recruiting leaders with the ability to lead others to lead themselves

Ericsson, Camilla, Nydén, Ellinor January 2010 (has links)
The meaning of the word leadership is changing over time, and so is the role of the leader. Organisational labour is today required to be more self-governing as organisational tasks are moving towards a more flexible and independent nature. This requires a leadership able to inspire and motivate independent performance by acting as an inspirational mentor or coach (Bass and Riggio (2005). Those leaders and that style of leadership have many names, but in our research they are titled as Transformational and Charismatic leaders, as well as Super Leaders. Perhaps they are best described by using Vardiman et al (2006:97) own words: “the most effective leaders teach others to be effective leaders of themselves and others." Identifying, selecting and recruiting the right leader are a competitive advantage and an important success factor (Fernández-Aráoz et al, 2009). The objective of this thesis is therefore to gain knowledge in the manners present when charismatic and inspirational leaders with the ability to lead others to lead themselves are identified, recruited and selected. We judge gaining understanding in how to identify, attract, select, recruit and keep leaders with this special leadership style as a vital knowledge in today’s highly competitive business world. This thesis approaches leader recruitment from both an external and internal perspective by conveying dialogues with recruitment consultants as well as with a HR-manager. The thesis further raises the question whether the inspirational and charismatic leadership style is appropriate in all type of organisations and here focus on organisational culture as a key determinant when recruiting leaders.

Daniel Ndoundou : Väckelseledare i den Evangeliska Kyrkan i Kongo / Daniel Ndoundou : Revival Leader in the Evangelical Church of Congo

Åhman, Bertil January 2014 (has links)
Daniel Ndoundou (1911 – 1986) was born in the southern part of French Equatorial Africa, close to the border of the Belgian Congo. At an early age he joined the Swe-dish protestant mission. As a young man he began to work as an evangelist and in 1946 he was ordained pastor. The following year a spiritual revival started and soon Daniel Ndou¬ndou became its leader, a position he held for the rest of his life. The aim of this thesis was to describe and analyse how Daniel Ndoundou carried out his ministry as a revival leader in the intersection between traditional beliefs and the new religion introduced by the protestant missionaries. He experienced the pro-cess of his country gaining its independence and the founding of the autonomous Evangelical Church of Congo. As a well-known counsellor and healer he received many pilgrims at his home. During revival meetings he sometimes preached to thou-sands of people. He had to take a stand on different movements of political and religious character that emerged especially during the colonial era. The thesis shows that the doctrines adopted by Daniel Ndoundou were close to those of the missionaries. However, he sometimes accepted and applied practices that were seen as controversial by his Church leaders. This was particularly evident when he invited people to the “Pool of Siloam” where he organized ritual baths for healing. The thesis also describes the legacy left by Daniel Ndoundou namely how the Evangelical Church of Congo manages the revival almost 30 years after his death. Many charismatic Christians play an important role and for the local pastor they are sometimes difficult to handle. The void left by Daniel Ndoundou is strongly felt by many church members since he was seen as the authority in matters relating to spiritual gifts.
