The logical structure underlying temporal references in natural language

Bruce, Bertram C. 03 March 2011 (has links)
Temporal references in natural language include tenses and other time relations, references to specific times, and a variety of phrases such as "present", "later", "when", "how often", and "never". Their high frequency of occurrence reflects the importance of time to the users of natural language. Although the structure underlying temporal references may appear complicated, it is a working assumption of this thesis that a sound logical explanation of its characteristics can be made. The frequent use of temporal references makes a correct exhibition of their underlying structure vital to a full understanding of natural language. Such an understanding is important in teaching and translating, indeed in all uses of natural language. In addition, understanding language better should aid in the design of computer programs which process natural languages. Chapter 2 of this thesis surveys some relevant work on temporal references, both to show what has been done and to show the scope of the problem. Despite the divergence in terminology and viewpoint, a unified theory can be derived which relates and extends the previous work. The new theory is presented in Chapter 3. It is a formal system which models the intuitive meaning of tenses, time relations, and other references to the time of events. The system precisely defines and shows the interrelationships of concepts which are often only vaguely defined. By its generality and its logical foundation, the system is able to serve as a skeleton for further studies of time in language. To illustrate some of the features of the system a question answering computer program, called Chronos, was written which accepts information in the form of tensed sentences and answers questions about the time of events. This program is discussed in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 discusses a problem which arises when we consider assigning truth values to statements about events occurring at times other than the present. The problem is to define a logic for unknown outcomes which retains the two valued tautologies. A logic is presented which has two kinds of implication: a material implication for which all the classical tautologies hold, and a strict implication defined in terms of logical necessity. The strict implication fragment of this logic is shown to be slightly stronger than the Lewis (1959) system S5, although it avoids many of the so-called paradoxes of material implication. The logic of Chapter 5 is a useful extension of the system for tenses (Chapter 3) to situations in which future (and perhaps past) events may have the truth value "unknown". Chapter 6 is a discussion section which evaluates the tense system, the logic for unknown outcomes, and the program Chronos. Several possibilities for extending the thesis are discussed. / text

As a result of this scene, in order to belong to a society in which this idea prevails, individuals resort to keep their body as an inclusion strategy, mainly respect to wrinkle s convergence in their his face. It refers to something previously designed by the group, which in turn construct clear consequences on physiological territory and marketing areas. So, to identify the effects and the persistence of wrinkles in a face, both physiological as well in marketing spheres belonging to the refered context, the objectives for this research were postulated for literature and also in a case study, belonging to three stages of discussion: the recognition of concepts including those proposed by the Semiotics of Culture, foccusing confluence of time and memory; giving an special importance to psychological features, as for instance narcisism, and finally the consideration on biological and anthropological role of wrinkles of a face, into some special and cultural universe; from another perspective we think about a characterization of how demand is configured to follow its consequent performance ,taking on procedures of the cosmetical industry, as it is presented in a previous context. In developing our aims, it highlights some authors like Giorgio Agamben, Iuri Lotman, Didier Anzieu, Andre Green and Philip Kotler, whose thoughts can explain and help to understand the complexity of wrinkles in a face, which is presented as an object, capable to give a certain and special trend to this research / Este trabalho pressupõe que no contexto cultural contemporâneo se intensifica toda uma luta pelo controle do tempo.

The cello has a prominent place in the music of Roberto Victorio, due to the fact the composer is a cellist and knows the idiomatic and technical aspects of the instrument. This article analyzes the skills and knowledge necessary to the performance of the works Aztlan and Chronos III for solo cello. As methodological procedure the work was built in three stages: at first a study on notation in the works of Victorio was develeped and how the concepts of desperception, timbre, time and space influence his writing. In a second moment the author made an interview with the composer and finally held performances and recordings of works using the concepts researched in the first two steps.

Entre cronos e kairós: a auto-percepção da idade na velhice

Bertamoni, Hélia Fraga Gomes 29 May 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-27T18:47:33Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Helia Fraga Gomes Bertamoni.pdf: 871925 bytes, checksum: 42947a0bc2277cfb93586c618808151d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-29 / Temporality is lived by men through both chronological and existential terms. Such paired experience of temporality frequently unfolds on what we can name as the hiatus between the real and the conceived age. In most cases, the selfperception of age leads to subtraction of years of life, being rare the cases which self-attributed age matches and even increases the real age. That is the topic of this dissertation which has gone not only into authors whose works are molded by diverse philosophies and scientific traditions but also into aesthetics through poets and composers. The main objective was to investigate the proximity and the distance between the chronological and conceived ages among individuals in Health Care. Alongside and according to the individuals, we have also come up with conceptions of aging and old age. From a methodological point of view the option was for the qualitative approach. For being an approach that allows exploration of conceptions and wishes, normally odd to the oriented quantitative approaches, our option provided attributed meanings given by the individuals so as chronos (chronological) and kairos (existential) temporalities could be unveiled / A temporalidade é vivida, pelos homens, quer em termos cronológicos, quer em termos existenciais.

The need for teaching the escatological gospel of both coming of Jesus Christ in the twenty - first century especially if we see the day of his Parousia approaching

Hebert, David K. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is designed to outline the systematic-theological and theological-historical basis for the Eschatological Gospel of Both Comings of Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha Mashiach). This cohesively combines Jesus‘ First Coming (for redemption, reconciliation and restoration) with His Second Coming (for the Rapture/Resurrection of the Church/Body of Christ and judgment at the Day of the Lord/Yahweh) into the complete salvation of the Church. The historical writings of the Patristic, Ante- and Post-Nicene Fathers are examined to ensure the continuity of this Eschatological Gospel message being communicated through their writings to the Early Church. The remainder of Church history is examined to ensure the Eschatological Gospel continued to be communicated by the Church as a part of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20. Then, in keeping with the eschatological prophetic intent of the Parable of the Wheat and Tares (Weeds) in Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, of both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan coexisting and growing until ―the end of the age,‖ the antithesis of the Eschatological Gospel is examined—Satan‘s plan of lies, deception and heresy throughout history, culminating with the explosion of activity since 1948. This satanic plan is described as being not only insidiously deceptive by recruiting converts to the kingdom of darkness in rebellion and opposition to the kingdom of God, but also as preparing the way for the End-time/Last Days‘ ten-nation confederacy to be led by the antichrist. Biblical chronology is used to trace the history of both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness to the present day. Finally, the ―Signs of the Times‖ in modern history are examined, thereby showing the need for the Eschatological Gospel to be taught in the twenty-first century, especially as the day of the Lord Jesus Christ‘s Parousia rapidly approaches. / Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics / D.Th. Les mythes dans l'oeuvre romanesque de Manuel De Lope / A mythocritical analysis of the novels of Manuel de Lope.

Chandanson, Muriel 20 March 2014 (has links)
Cette thèse présente une étude mythocritique de la production romanesque de Manuel de Lope [1949] postérieure à son retour en Espagne en 1993 et jusqu’à aujourd’hui : El libro de piel de tiburón (Alfaguara,1995); Bella en las tinieblas (Alfaguara,1997), (Suma de Letras, 2000), (RBA, 2010) ; Las perlas peregrinas (Espasa-Calpe,1998), (RBA, 2007) ;
 La sangre ajena (Editorial Debate, 2000); Otras islas (RBA, 2008). En effet, un séjour de vingt-cinq ans hors d’Espagne lui a permis d’exercer un regard extérieur et fécond sur son propre pays où désormais, il vit et écrit. Son œuvre romanesque recourt aux mythes antiques pour développer les thématiques essentielles dans l’Espagne de ce début de XXI ème siècle que sont la mémoire et l’oubli face à l’Histoire, la quête identitaire à travers les mythes du labyrinthe, du caïnisme, de Dionysos, de Saturne et de Chronos. Tous ces mythes s’organisent autour d’un mythe dominant, celui de Chronos, grâce à une image phare qui éclaire l’identité collective espagnole, image déjà présente dans l’ œuvre goyesque : celle de Saturne dévorant ses fils. / This thesis presents a mythocritical analysis of the novels written by Manuel de Lope (born in 1949) from 1993, when he returned home to Spain, until nowadays: El libro de piel de tiburón (Alfaguara,1995); Bella en las tinieblas (Alfaguara,1997), (Suma de Letras, 2000), (RBA, 2010) ; Las perlas peregrinas (Espasa-Calpe,1998), (RBA, 2007) ;
 La sangre ajena (Editorial Debate, 2000); Otras islas (RBA, 2008). As he had stayed away from Spain for twenty-five years, he was able to look with an external and creative perspective at his own country where he is now living and writing. In his fiction he resorts to ancient myths in order to develop the themes which are essential in the Spain of the early 21st century: memory and obliviousness as regards history as well as the search for identity through the myths of the Labyrinth, cainism, Dionysus, Saturn and Chronos. In Manuel de Lope's work, all these myths are structured around a dominant myth - that of Chronos- thanks to a highly influential image which sheds light on Spanish cultural identity, an image which was already present in Goya's work: Saturn devouring his sons.

Zrcadlo reality v obrazech snů 19. a 20.století. Tvůrčí individualita versus chaos doby / The Mirror of Reality in the Imagery of Dreams of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Creative Individuality versus the Chaos of the Time

Šmejkalová, Adriana January 2018 (has links)
ANNOTATION: The work The Mirror of Reality in the Imagery of Dreams of the 19th and 20th Centuries - Creative Individuality versus the Chaos of the Time is based on the assumption that dreams are inseparably linked to the concept of existence in human life (Michel Foucault). The study touches on the ways in which dreams are depicted in visual culture that does not coincide with chronologically organized historical events, but is an expression of a free alliance between artists in the European space and centuries of common experience. These works are generally socially critical, exposed to unimaginable pressure from public censorship. The artist must pretend it is only an innocent game, a crazy idea, a whim. At the same time, these paintings are not an expression of boundless imagination, but they are subject to the firm rules of spatial construction of the painting. This is due to the traditional delimitation of dark depths - the underworld of Virgil's Saturn myth of pre-Roman culture, alternating with the vertically felt open heavens as variants of the original Plato's The Myth of Er, which in the 20th century paintings is replaced by the idea of an open landscape with illumination on the low horizon. The work deals with the work of Albrecht Dürer, his copperplate Melancholia I (1514) and his so-called...
