A Comparison of Circle and J Hook Performance within the Grenadian Pelagic Longline FisheryBurns, Anthony G 25 April 2019 (has links)
The development and adaptation of gear technologies to local fisheries has been a management-oriented research strategy commonly used to mitigate the ecological effects of pelagic longline (PLL) gear on bycatch species. Grenada’s PLL fishery primarily targets yellowfin tuna, however while minimal, their bycatch of blue marlin and white marlin exceeds the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) allowed by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). A switch to circle hooks may benefit these nontargeted, bycatch species by reducing catch rates and haulback mortality, as well as increasing post-release survival. To determine differences in performance, assessments of 16/0 circle hooks and 9/0 J hooks were alternated over 26 sets between January and June 2018. Catch, mortality, hook location, length and grade of fish were compared between hook types. No differences in haulback mortality rate for all species, or yellowfin tuna grade were found between hook types. However, significantly fewer billfish collectively (t= 2.36, p= 0.028), and sailfish specifically (t= 3.04, p=0.005), were caught on circle hooks. Additionally, tuna caught with circle hooks had a 69% greater chance of external hooking compared to J hooks (X2 = 4.38 p=0.036). All other species analyzed had statistically similar catch rates regardless of hook type (p < 0.05), including, yellowfin tuna. The results of this study indicate the Grenadian PLL can reduce its impact on billfish bycatch by using 16/0 circle hooks without incurring negative effects on their tuna catch rate or grade. This research provides further evidence that circle hooks should be the recommended gear type when using a bycatch mitigation approach to manage PLL fisheries.

On Random Polynomials Spanned by OPUCAljubran, Hanan 12 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / We consider the behavior of zeros of random polynomials of the from
\begin{equation*}
P_{n,m}(z) := \eta_0\varphi_m^{(m)}(z) + \eta_1 \varphi_{m+1}^{(m)}(z) + \cdots + \eta_n \varphi_{n+m}^{(m)}(z)
\end{equation*}
as \( n\to\infty \), where \( m \) is a non-negative integer (most of the work deal with the case \( m =0 \) ), \( \{\eta_n\}_{n=0}^\infty \) is a sequence of i.i.d. Gaussian random variables, and \( \{\varphi_n(z)\}_{n=0}^\infty \) is a sequence of orthonormal polynomials on the unit circle \( \mathbb T \) for some Borel measure \( \mu \) on \( \mathbb T \) with infinitely many points in its support. Most of the work is done by manipulating the density function for the expected number of zeros of a random polynomial, which we call the intensity function.

IN LARGE SCALE : the art of knitting a small shell in large scale / STORSKALIGT : konsten att sticka en liten snäcka stortJerhov, Carolina January 2021 (has links)
This work places itself in the field of knitted textile design and the context of body and interior. The primary motive is to investigate the tactile and visual properties of oysters and pearls, inspired by Botticelli’s painting Venus. The aim is to explore free-flowing and texture through knitted three-dimensional textile surfaces. Material and colour choices have been made based on the source of inspiration, the oyster, and investigated on industrial circle knit and flat knit machines. The circle knit’s expression has been explored from a hand knitting perspective, using the manual elements to push the machine’s technique to design new expressions. The result of the project is a collection that has four suggestions for a knitted, three-dimensional surface, each inspired and developed from one specific part of the oyster; the shell, the nacre, the flesh, and the pearl. This work investigates the potential of using circle knit machines, commonly used in fast fashion for bulk production, as a tool for handicraft and higher art forms. The final collection pushes the conversation regarding the future uses of the knitting machines and investigates how rigid objects can be expressed through the flexible structure.

El uso del ciclo de enseñanza y aprendizaje de LE : Un análisis sobre los métodos usados en ELE en el desarrollo de la expresión escrita / The use of the circle model in foreign language : An analysis of the methods used in (ELE) in the development of the written expressionCakir, Sacha January 2020 (has links)
In this qualitative study we are going to use semi-structured interview, we have investigated four teachers who teach the subject of Spanish as a foreign language- in different parts of Sweden. The purpose is to investigate different methods of the process of writing used by teachers and if they use de circle model as a method or not (Gibbons, 2018). It also aims to evoke if there is any advantage and disadvantage with the methods used by the teachers. The results show that all the teachers use different methods that have both advantages and disadvantages. None of the teachers use the circle model. On the other hand, all the teachers use parts of the circle model.

Intergenerational Continuity and Change:Exploring Succession Patterns, Decision-Making Factors, and Emerging Themes in Family Business TransitionsSöderström, Hampus, Kock, Daniel January 2023 (has links)
Background: Family businesses contribute significantly to global economies but face unique challenges, notably in succession planning and generational transitions. These challenges are amplified due to the interplay of personal relationships, emotions, and family dynamics. Existing research offers quantitative insights into this field; however, the nuances of human experiences and perceptions in different cultural contexts remain underexplored. This study seeks to bridge this gap through qualitative exploration of family businesses' experiences and perceptions in Sweden and Canada, focusing on succession planning and generational transitions. The research aims to provide a more nuanced understanding, thus contributing to more effective, culturally sensitive, and practitioner-oriented strategies for managing intergenerational transfers. Purpose: This study delves into the complex process of succession in family businesses in Sweden and Canada. By emphasizing practitioners' lived experiences, it aims to identify prevalent patterns, contribute to the current literature, and potentially inform enhanced succession practices. Method: Applying an abductive research approach, the research combined hermeneutic and phenomenological methods, employing semi-structured interviews with nine family businesses six in Sweden and three in Canada as the primary data collection method. This approach allowed for a rich understanding of the phenomena. Conclusion: The research underscores the complexities of succession planning in family businesses, emphasizing the importance of open communication, trust, personal ties, and effective succession planning. Our findings diverge from a one-size-fits-all approach, revealing a multifaceted reality that requires a more adaptable, context-specific approach to succession planning. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of succession processes in family businesses, presenting valuable insights for future research, policy decisions, and practical business strategies.
