Danza, Juan Manuel 18 June 2019 (has links)
Notwithstanding Contra Symmachum’ s epic nature is not made explicit in the poem (in fact, some of its particularities –like title, structure, meter and theme– make difficult to unequivocally establish its genre), the hypothesis here proposed is to present its epic nature as a result of a double strategic goal. We sustain Prudentius aims to exalt the victory of Christian faith over ancient pagan cults, and at the same time, that he also wants his poem to achive a poetic dignity similar to the one of classical epic poetry. Our conclusions will show that Contra Symmachum belong to that literary genre because it is written in hexameters, it addresses a historical topic, and has a didactic purpose; but also –and particularly– as a result of different transformations, assimilations and conversions considered imperative by Prudentius in order to revitalize the relationship between epic genre and epideictic rhetoric, to polemicize with ancient pagan poetry and, in turn, to establish Christianity’ supremacy over Quintus Aurelius Symmachus’s oratory skills and his words.

La prose moderniste péruvienne et la vision de la modernité chez Manuel González Prada, Clemente Palma et Ventura García Calderón / Peruvian modernista prose and the vision of modernity in Manuel González Prada, Clemente Palma and Ventura García Calderón

Sumalavia, Ricardo 08 July 2014 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes a corpus of texts from Peru written in the period of Modernism (1880-1920). This research examined the prose of authors Manuel González Prada (1844-1918), Clemente Palma (1872-1946), and Ventura García Calderón (1886-1959). It investigates the modalities particular to literary Modernism and how they adapted their vision to the shorter prose genres - the short story, the essay, and literary crónica - highly diffused through the Peruvian press. In this way, the first section of this work explores the necessity (appropriateness) of a modern discourse in this period and its relation to Peruvian modernista literature. Thus, this study will present the diversity of topics and the range of forms inherent to modernista prose, as well as bring into question the role of Peruvian literary criticism who tended to derogate it as aestheticizing and superficial. The second section is focused on the characteristics of the brief narratives: short stories, essays, and literary chronicle, as essential genres in the development of the Latin American press within a society preoccupied with incorporating the models of modernity arriving from Europe. The third and final section is dedicated to the analysis of works from González Prada, Palma, and García Calderón. It highlights the various leitmotifs employed, primarily in the short story, including disease, urban life and its modernization, and the femme fatale as an allegory for a modernity ripe with paradox and dissatisfaction.

Garnica Brocos, Helen Flor 19 November 2019 (has links)
Tesis

The lawyer of the Church : Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía and the ecclesiastical response to the liberal revolution in Mexico (1810-1868)

Mijangos, Pablo 2009 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the Catholic Church’s response to the mid-nineteenth century Mexican liberal Reforma through a study of the life and work of Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía (1810-1868), one of the most influential yet least-known ecclesiastical intellectuals of the period. A lawyer by profession, Clemente Munguía was first professor and then rector of the Morelia diocesan seminary, where he undertook a major reform of the school’s curriculum and also composed several textbooks on a variety of subjects, including grammar, literature, rhetoric, philosophy, theology, and law. Appointed Bishop of Michoacán in October 1850, Munguía distinguished himself for his staunch opposition to the state’s encroachment on the Church, as well as for his insistence on the need for religious intolerance in what he imagined as an “exclusively Catholic” nation. His protests against the 1857 Constitution and the liberal legislation enacted by President Ignacio Comonfort were a key factor in the outbreak of the Civil War of the Reform (1858-1860) and the subsequent French intervention (1862-1867), which resulted in the separation of Church and state and the collapse of Mexican conservatism. Unlike previous studies, this dissertation argues that Bishop Munguía’s opposition to the Reforma derived not from a blind “reactionary” intransigence, but instead from his desire to emancipate the Church from the subordinate status it had under the colonial ancien régime. Far from the stereotype of a backward and parochial intellectual, Munguía was a sophisticated scholar who sought to reconcile Catholicism with the larger currents of thought of the Atlantic Republic of letters. Indeed, he believed that the liberal revolution should be countered “with its own weapons,” a conviction which first led him to frame the defense of ecclesiastical prerogatives in the language of modern natural law, and then to claim for the Church the very power of constitutional interpretation. Although Munguía’s ideal of a “Catholic republic” became unfeasible after the liberals’ final victory in 1867, his efforts at consolidating ecclesiastical independence paved the way for both the Romanization and the social activism that characterized the Mexican Church during the latter half of the nineteenth century. / text

Tonet, Charles 14 December 2017 (has links)
Submitted by cmquadros@ucs.br (cmquadros@ucs.br) on 2018-04-03T12:46:13Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Charle Tonet.pdf: 757594 bytes, checksum: fd81c3623870a0882735f6a6a1393c24 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-04-03T12:46:13Z (GMT). Based on the analysis of the regional economic historiography and on its major business symbol, Abramo Eberle, the purpose is to identify the connections between this historical narrative and the fictional one in the Gardone family’s entrepreneurial trail, present in the immigration trilogy: A Cocanha, O Quatrilho and A Babilônia, by José Clemente Pozenato. Therefore, this project aims to discuss the entrepreneurship as a regionality manifestation, which examines the mythical speech based on Mircea Eliade’s concepts and to identify how the characters’ logic and its range of moral values represent the traditional principals of the entrepreneurial model.

José Clemente Pereira e o debate jurídico do Império 1830-1850 / José Clemente Pereira and the empire law debats 1830-1850

Macario, Mariana Pedron 05 September 2011 (has links)
This paper aims at discussing some aspects of the legal debate that took place during the first half of the XIXth Century. Said aspects are assessed from the moment Justice and Politician José Clemente Pereira appears in the public scenario. It is the moment when strengths are gathered to create a national legislation, then mandatory due to the rupture of bonds with Portugal. Born in Portugal in 1787, graduate at the University of Coimbra, Clemente Pereira immigrated to Brazil in 1815. He rapidly gained importance as a businessman and as a politician, taking part in the discussions that lead to the Independence and becoming quite influential in the Court due to his business and his work as an attorney for major traders. He was a judge, congressman, a ministry of the Empire, of War and Navy, a Senator, a State Counselor, and the Chairman of the first Board of Trade of Brazil. After occupying the afore mentioned positions, he acted as an influential player in several debates about legal and political matters, among which we chose three: the creation of the act of liability for ministries of State of 1827; the debates on the Criminal Code of the Empire, created in 1830, and of the Commercial Code of 1850. The debates show the challenges that were set for the establishment of the Brazilian State and Nation, in a context of transformation of the Law represented by the modern set of codification ideas and changes in politics, with the growing centralization of monarchical power, but also with its limitation, starting with the onset of constitutionalism.
